Do giant fleshy monsters count as giant robots? Everyone has an answer, but few seem to know. Link to the Discord: / discord Link to Patreon: www.patreon.com/user?u=312627...
Attack on Titan is NOT Mecha and that is granting that Evangelion is even though they have organic components... Attack on Titan is a magical girl transformation anime.
Biomecha isn't new Neon genesis evangelion is Biomecha. What's the meaning of "Biomecha"? • Biological = relating to biology or living organisms. • Mecha = is a genre of Japanese manga and anime that heavily features or focuses on mechanical innovation. Robots, cyborgs, androids, and space stations, for example, all fall under the wide umbrella of mecha; however, robots are usually the primary focus. So the term "biomecha" means cyborg a mech made of half-steel and half-flesh. Example: EVA units Titans are not mech because they're composed of flesh alone, titans are kaiju. What is kaiju? • Kaiju = a giant monster of a type featured in Japanese fantasy and science fiction movies and television programs. Just like the definition said titans are giant humanoid monsters that preys on humans so they're 100% kaiju not a mech suit.
Smooth brain = Titan is not a Mech! Genius brain = Titan is an organic Mech like Eva! Galaxy Brain = Titan is Sailor Moon reboot. Only special people part of the Holy Royal Family can TRANSFORM into champions of truth and justice. Singularity Brain = Titan is the spiritual sequel to Pokémon. Discuss.
If I remember right, the mangaka behind AOT is a big muv-luv fan and said that it was a big inspiration for AOT. I remember in the manga there was a drawing he did of a TSF (mecha from ML) fighting a titan. So even the creator of AOT admits that mecha played a part in how he crafted the story.
The Isayama and original creator of the Muv Luv Franchise, which is primarily a visual novel franchise, seem to be friends. It is interesting to note those title do share similarities, especially from AoT initial story: humanity is ont the brink of extinction, humanity lives what remains of earth, fighting a losing war, primary cast are cadets in military.
Considering titan meat is steaming hot and very non dense. i doubt it would be very palatable. Like taking a bite out of hot hard air that is disintegrating. The feeling in your mouth would be very unique.
Yes it's a Mecha and you can call this anime with "Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam" too, The main character Kamille Bidan saw his mother murdered in front of his eyes, then he joined organization to destroy TITANS!!! and I surprisingly enjoyed that anime which released on 1985, pretty old but nice!!!!
Honestly, this series comes off as something a writer would do to convince somebody they like mech anime by disguising it. Like if your buddy says "GiAnT fIgHtInG rObOtS aRe DuMb!" but then they're like "attack on titan is the best anime ever." they clearly don't make their own opinions but rather allow others to shape them for them.
tbf aot has alot more to it than titan fights, that's like one of the least important parts of the show, most of my favourite aot scenes are character moments + some titan fights and odm gear scenes too ofcourse
Escaflowne is also a Bio Mecha franchise. Yet it's considered Mecha despite that the Dragon Armors require humans with Dragon Blood to operate, and themselves are made of living tissue.
Live action AoT movies should pretty solidly be Tokusatsu. Since the "definition" as best I can recall it is just live action with special effects, I'd say it fits the bill rather well, especially since it contains some of the classic trappings of Toku series as you covered.
The only protagonist from the Gundam franchise I find very close to Eren's character is Mikazuki Augus from Gundam IBO. They both fight for freedom without hesitation. They lost almost everyone they love. They both have the world turned against them and are called devils.
@1:44 Because Evas are still mechanical and Titans are as you say: A hulking mass of meat. But eh. I always found the Mecha genre to be odd when people mention that Mecha doesn't always have to be something mechanical. I mean they have their similarities like it is described in this video but.. Mecha stands for Mechanical. It's a weird subject.
@@myspacebarbrokenevermindif9892 If one were to dive deeper, mechanics is just to control something. Like our brains control our bodies. So I guess we're in one huge Mecha genre in life huh.
Yes, the live action AoT is Tokusatsu. Godzilla is Tokusatsu. That just refers to films with special effects. It doesn't specifically refer to hero shows.
I just started watching AoT. I could see it was a Mecha from like ep7 when they showed Erin hooked up to his (not) Mobile-suit. Like they even did the in-cockpit shot. It's a fucking mecha. xD
Honestly, Attack on Titan is too clearly inspired by tokusatsu that I can't help but say the only accurate comparison would really be a henshin-hero, more specifically to a Tsuburaya show like Ultraman
The reason I have found myself at this video is due to another video from a separate channel. They said that gundam as a genere is possibly in need of a Renaissance. This same channel has been teaching me the basics of gundam anime as well. When he said it was in need of a Renaissance and considering the basics, my mind immediately went to Attack on Titan as an argument. They're fleshy, but it feels like an original gundam 🤷♂️
Titans are Biots, Pure Titans are Biot Zombie/Kaiju, the 9 Titans are Biots with human pilots. Also the fleshy "cockpit" is somewhat reminiscent of the biomechanical cockpit in "Escaflowne the Movie", rather than the more davinciesque mechanical cockpits in the "Vision of Escaflowne" series. Which is a medieval fantasy mecha series that is probably the closest related. So I'd say the answer is, both yes and no.
I mean, saying that technology cannot include organic components, I feel like Guyver would like to have a word with you. Getting the same result via a different process doesn't mean it isn't the same result.
For me, mecha is more than just giant fighting. It is also the other aspect of the mecha. The fixing and repairing and the like. For Attack on Titan, the non-combat focus is on other aspects.
Well the fixing and repairing are in AoT it’s just fast and self sustaining like if a mech had nano machines, like one show on Netflix. Not to mention in parts of AoT there is a focus on the mechanics of the titans like the muscles and tendons, not to mention the “pilot” or control center.
let's start another fire! is The Saga of Tanya the Evil a Mecha? OF course not but is does have characters who have the similar abilities as mechs! they can level whole cities, fly, a grunt vs aces dynamic, ranged and CQC combat... hmm.... na i'm just reaching.
Ahh yess the giant meats that has the same function as a mecha "hey dude titans are mecha because they have the same function" no they're not "laughs at Evangelion" EVA units are cyborgs not just a pure angel meat "b...but they have the same function" so that means a horse is also a mecha because the have the same function as a car, wait What is Mecha? Mecha is a genre of Japanese manga and anime that heavily features or focuses on mechanical innovation, Robots, cyborgs, androids. It clearly stated that mecha features on mechanical innovation such as robots, cyborgs and androids not a stupid meat.
In hindsight, aot ain't like traditional mecha. Cause zeta didn't follow char as the protagonist, only to watch him become the villain and SUCCEED in droping axis, in order to prevent amuro from dropping the entire fucking moon
Unless you consider it bio mechanical like the EVA but in Eva they have mechanical parts I am a man that loves mecha but EVA is a bio mechanical creature
All I had to read was the title, and I agreed with you lol. Even regular people are biological machines, our brains are one of the most advanced supercomputers in the world. We can’t program an AI with a mechanical nervous system that can feel pain, contemplate life, and come to the decision to jump off a cliff, at least not yet. That being said, humans can. Our brains literally use electrical signals from ionic discharges to work lmao, we’re bio-mechanical beings, mechs, just like Titans.
Tbh Evangelion Is more closer to the Kaiju genre than Mecha, they are barely 'piloted' and the Pilot-Eva interaction are more like Suits than mechanics or controls.
While I don't think it's MECHA per say, I think it becomes MECHA-LIKE but only really around the last 1 or 2 eps of Season 1. At first it's just Eren turning into a monster and learning to control it, but once it's revealed the Female Titan (SPOILERS) is like Eren and a shifter, I think the more mecha-esque elements come into play. Specifically the more Real Robot genres because then it becomes less of a mecha vs monster formula like the more super robot mecha series and instead becomes more pilot v pilot conflict (or shifter v shifter). So it's no longer fighting against a 'monster' and fighting against a person, a ideology, a faction, a country etc. This continues and grows especially in the later seasons when more and more about the 'truth' about the world comes into light.
They are more mecha than chojin. Misaka and Levi fit into the chojin category being ultra skilled in 3d gear combat. Mecha usually have vanguard roles in clearing out zaku type enemies while aiding the military. It's a tide turner indeed. It really reminds me of gundam in a way.
Attack on Titan's music absolutely sounds like it's mecha. Compare Gundam Unicorn's OST to Attack on Titan's, and you'll notice a fair number of similarities between tracks like Banshee and Armored Titan theme. Granted, it's the same composer behind both, and his style is notable for its use of percussion (ie, the type of instrument you use when you're trying to convey the weight of a massive footfall from a mecha), but those two anime's tracks blend together rather easily. As for whether AoT as a whole is a mecha anime, I think it's a bit far removed from the signposts of the genre to count as mecha. The standard mecha anime is scifi and deals with themes related to that. The term "mecha" is a reference to the mechs themselves being mechanized. Evangelion subverts that trope by making the Evas partially organic, but the key term to keep in mind is "subvert". It's a specific deviation from the norm with the goal of highlighting the base assumptions behind it. As for other similarities, many of the mecha elements of AoT seem to have been coopted because those tropes and framing devices are effective. Keeping the focus on Eren and Reiner's personal feelings helps ground the viewers in a conflict, because it's much easier for us to get invested in struggles we can understand than a battle between unfathomably large monstrosities. Cutting to the pilot's face inside of a mecha reminds the audience that the 15m-tall blue cyclops is actually being controlled by a human. tl;dr AoT isn't a mecha anime, but it stole all the good mecha tricks and has an awesome soundtrack.
Not sure your average AoT fan would like your recommendations. Most AoT fans just seem mesmerised by MAPPA's Hype and completely miss everything else about the show.
I didn't start the video yet but for me AoT always reminded me of Evangelion which it takes a lot of inspiration from. The capsule where the pilot resides is in the same (weak) spot of the Giants'
When I first read the title to this I thought you were talking about Mecca as in the Holy City. And when you said it sparks a Holy War I was like "Well Yeah!" I'm old...….
@@7iscoe The Evas at least have mechanic-looking armor on their bodies and cockpit in their heads, making them cybernetic demons. So yeah, that's mecha in my book.
@@Rassenomatjutut the mechanic armor doesn’t really matter, AOT and Eva share the same qualities, even AOT titan shifters are even still separate from the shifter by using the founding titan, ymir was able to bring past titans from the past without bringing in the shifters.
I’m at 1:32 so I haven’t seen if you brought it up yet but Escaflowme would be my example for a mecha series that justifies attack on titan being mecha. But Eva is a way better example.
After looking at some comments it seems the conclusion is no, AOT is not mecha because is does not qualify as having metal armor, or parts. Even is Eva the control interface was still technically a mechanical control system. I know that Eva is controlled more with thought than actual hand controls, but some hand controls are still needed for some essential task. But, the titans do still function in the same role as mecha. So the answer the question. (the pirate meme, officially no, technically yes.)
It’s funny this video exist because I once summarized to my friend who had also watched the anime that AOT started off as a horror genre until season 4, where it became a political-mecha genre.
@@generalvendemiaire3005 Fair enough, but we should ask then, Is the "Swordfish II" a robot? Is Tekkaman Blade a robot? Are the Rune gods robots? Are the Evangelions robots? Is Godzilla a robot? O.o
@@seathfury1697 the cowboy bebop and tekkaman is sci-fi which is the other term for mecha, the swordfish ll is more on being a fighter plane not a robot and tekkaman is like iron man which is also a robot the rune gods are definitely robots, the EVA units are cyborgs which is also part of mecha but half-meat half-robot well godzilla is not a robot godzilla is a monster mecha godzilla is the robot
@@generalvendemiaire3005 I'm just going for the "they're not robots" thing you said, adding Tekkaman blade and Cowboy bebop just for being sci fi by itself is stretching it. And Godzilla debuted in Super Robot Wars X-Ω. There's also Devilman, who as far as I know is not a robot, nor sci-fi. I don't think it's that far fetched to say that Shingeki could be a candidate for a SRW game, even if it's just a mobile one...
@@seathfury1697 as far as i remember it is an event celebrating the release of Shin Godzilla during that event godzilla appeared and could be obtain as a playable unit, for devilman it's the producer personally wanted devilman added to the game, it's up to them not to us but i don't think they'll add aot into it cause they'll be questioned of what SRW core concept really is
titan is basically a mecha show , even if its only in funtionality of the titans them selves and the structure if the series. on the surface its not really mecha but its got the heart of a mecha series
I mean it kinda is a mecha anime with the ODM gear being smaller suits and titans being wetware mechas, still, doesn't take away from the fact that AOT is amazing.
I've always thought of this and I'm glad this dialogue has been brought up since the premise is the same but the delivery is different. I'd say that AOT is influenced off of mecha, but what constitutes an anime as a mecha are robots, so no, AOT isn't. Its a controversial question at first glance but when you think about it more, it's pretty debatable.
