I won't be paying for mods. If mods become solely third party DLCs for a price, then I will just play the vanilla game and major official DLCs. I'm not even sanctimonious for saying this, because back in the day, I spent most of my free time for years to make mods for a couple of different games. Got tens of thousands of downloads and won a modding competition. I also created tutorials for other modders and moderated a forum for the purpose. The modding community was great. The game studio was supportive of modding, but forbade selling mods for money. Everyone accepted that, no problem. This cemented modding as such in my mind: a hobby for those willing to spend ungodly hours in a hobby and at "worst" learn enough to make them qualified to work for a game studio. Yeah, I collaborated on one mod with another dude, who included it in his portfolio, to land a job in the industry. But times change. This is nothing but my personal opinion and stance. Younger generations might feel like modding is just another opportunity to make a buck. I was also told, back in the day, that I'm an idiot for doing all that work for free. I don't regret being an idiot at all. Maybe hobbies are a dying form of pastime?
@GourmGames

I resonate with the statement that nowadays, all hobbies become monetized. Which granted is "the goal" but with so many ways to monetize life, the word hobby doesn't mean "that" anymore. It's been replaced with "side hustle" indicating a monetary goal

This just makes me hate these gamers that constantly compromise on their principle and who makes excuses for the company and why I should accept it. As far as I care this is complete trash, just another attempt to see if they can bleed more money from their playerbase. Completely disrespectful corporate trash. And the american tardism that makes us citizens always go to war for the right of companies to milk their audiences doesn't help.

It's really insane like the amount of times they'll remix and remaster different aspects of skyrim for profit when the community is what let it blossom for so long. It's been 11yrs! Let the devs work on es6 instead of ways to funnel more income from a decade old game. It really is just taking advantage of the culture around the game rather than build or appreciate it. Meanwhile the studio that made made God of War is releasing a free DLC

@@GourmGames Well seeing as how they are using skyrim to see what they can get away with in TES6 I wonder if modders will even have the option to mod TES6 without being forced to use creation club. And I bet they'll alter their terms of agreement. Since apparantly companies can just alter contracts made willy nilly or just cancel the service if you don't agree. If I'd do that to a company I'd get sued. What is more insane to me is that there are still so many players that just excuse it with "you can just ignore it" "you can just revert it back" Like listen people, seems to me you are blind to the issue or willfully ignorant. Do honestly think it is somewhat ironically funny that USA peeps in one hand advocate for very strong consumer rights "what's mine is mine and I paid for that product so it is mine" Yet with video games a lot seem to be "the company can do what they want, you can just decide not to pay for it" Like really? As if they ignore how much social pressure can be put on you and how badly you can be judged and treated for simply not going along with things. But eh. I'm going to hit 40 next year and I'm getting too old for this shit. And in a failing economy and society I have more pressing matters to worry about. Sure wish the playerbase found their spine and balls tho.

@@mileslp5489 yes, the modder are the one signing up and everything, the issues I see here is that I just don't understand why the dev of the game should be paid for integrating something soeone else made. it's there game, true, they made the game, not the mod, one of the big thing with modding is taht the whole point of it is that it's not an original part of the game, it's a modification of it. In my point of view, if that modification of the game is 1: proposed by the game, 2: being officially part of the game, 3: sold by the game devs. It's not a mod anymore, it's a DLC that pretends to be a mod. the issue is not paying for mod, nor the game "stealing mods" (because the modders sells them to the game or some sort aof agreements like that), the issue is adding a cash shop to a solo game and disguising it as "Modding". That the part that I dislike.

Worst, I have purchased every game they launched since Arena. They lost a loyal customer with this call. I happily pay modders for the ones I like and use. Scummy todd and microsoft want me to pay again for doing nothing but padding their own pockets with the efforts of others. I will never purchase another bethesda game and that is that. Screw them and the horse they rode in on. We all know they will not pay the modders fairly because they deserve 100% of the proceeds as they did all of the work, not just a cut of the proceeds because todd and microsoft say so.

I would not mind paying but bethesda doesn't know what they are doing. People are doing camping mods, make a camping mod then that incorporates the ideas and make it better than the mod THEN charge for it. Give the mod author the ability to also have his creation avaliable too for download and donation. What I want and am willing to pay from bethesda is game improvements that don't break the game versions. That has monetary value. You also got a dude making a more sensible full game add on to become the Dragonborn emperor and king of skyrim. Why don't they do that? People will pay for that. Or improving characters like Lydia improved dialog follower Lydia or updating character models like Bijin or fine male face textures. All they do is ruin peoples current game run and play through that also took hours to set up.

I'm not giving BGS any more money. If Bethesda really appreciated modders they wouldn't be taking a cut. They should give them all of the money as a thank-you for keeping the game alive. This is just a way to make money off of modders and players and will likely lead to piracy and other modders who are upset by it making mods to replace monetized ones.

It's too late. Everyone's used to microtransactions and paid mods are going to just be the reality of things for the future. I hope modders will do their best to actually provide value with paid mods, meaning good, lasting and fun content. A simple sword mod added in your crafting options for 5 bucks a pop ISN'T such a thing. If a mod isn't delivering quality, regardless of lore friendliness, but it just is the Skyrim mod equivalent of just buying a 15 dollars hat on a battle royale, it's not gonna cut it. We shall see if that's the case with the next batch of mods, imho.

An ongoing issue since the days of Morrowind. Fact is, if you engage in extortion-like tactics. Then the answer will be to hinder the exchange of currency between the extort-er and the extorted. No matter which way you try and paint it, the modding community is often in the wrong here. Demanding to be paid for unsolicited and unnegotiated work is extortion. Threatening to de-value a company's product or distribute it without a license is theft. Even if you believe you have some moral high ground, or principled position. It's a free market, if your skills are so valuable, that you believe you can demand compensation for your efforts, then by all means do so. By developing your own games. Which many "Modders" have tried and failed at. Many have succeeded. Bethesada has historically been fairly blase about modding and for the most part modders for their games have as well. But in recent years the modding community has become far more organized, bordering on unionized. With all the carrion calls of "Pirate everything!" beginning to be more than just a meme. But a call to action. Why wouldn't they be forced to protect their products? The gaming community is often guilty of putting the cart before the horse. In the case of the modding community it's very visible. Architects of their own demise. Unable to leave well enough alone. It's looking a lot like the digital download fever. That's left current day gamers with buyer's remorse. Demanding instant access to games. Which led to losing ownership of the game. Never forget children. Companies aren't intelligent, thinking, empathetic beings. They're machines. They simply respond to the market and try and generate revenue from it. WE. ARE.THE. MARKET. Thusly, if you're waiting for them to take the "Moral" position. You must ask yourself. Are we creating a market where the "Moral" position can generate revenue? If not. Then don't hold your breath.

As we all know skyyrim was always incomplete and never worked right. Moders are the heroes of skyrim that saved it from the fate of "good idea/poor execution obscurity" We also know many at bethesda are decent gamer type folks but Todd is not one of them. My bet is on this is an attempt to get moders to complete the games ideas and DLCs the suits at bethesda want but dont have the drive and/or talent to finish while paying a fraction of the cost to the talent. Think the music industry model but far worse. If you like Skyrim as much as I do, dont update with this. If forced to then use the work arounds that have already hit the moding sites.

I've heard the denuvo anti-cheat and corporate takeover fears for literal decades now, lol. Ever since Morrowind got it's GoTY Patch, that caused hundreds of well-loved mods to get patched to work right (often by other modders), we've seen doomer culture ring the bell of "Bethesda's ruining this thing that they know brings them a fanbase, money and employee prospects". And I definitely refuse to defend their choices... but I support what's happening right now for modders that make amazing work, that will have to be vetted into the paid programs. I'm not selfish or obnoxious. I will always root for the modders that form their own studios to get paid, so they can make better quality work and not give up on these amazing projects, because they need overtime to pay their rent. Remember 90% of mods will continue to be free and purely for the love of it. I will keep playing with free mods, like I've done for the last 23 years. Always take the doomer culture with a heavy grain of salt. It's often poison. It's always clickbait. It's as ill-informed as a blind scrib in Cyrodiil.

Go tip your fedora to a lady, then have a shower and clean some of that cheeto-dust off of your disgustingly pudgy fingers. For a start, patching a game to break mods and add no content/bugfixes is a total slap in the face for modders that spend thousands of hours working on mods for free. People shouldn't have to go back and 'fix' the mods. You need permission to re-post on nexus, so you can't just edit someone's files unless they have either given you permission or functionally disappeared. This has caused loads of drama in the community in the past. Second, they tried this, thanks to community feedback, they stopped. "I refuse to support their choices... I support what's happening right now (their choices)" "I"m not selfish or obnoxious." Au contraire mon ami. The lady doth protest overmuch methinks.... you are both obnoxious and selfish. You want the best experience FOR YOU... you don't give a shit about the kids who can't afford to pay for mods or the modders that are forced to spend MORE time on what was supposed to be a labour of love.
