waht the hell happened to commercials now? back then they made sense, with real situations and real products, now dudes are dropping toolboxes onto trucks they just built like it just doesn't make sense

Because they talk to the public consumer like their 3 years old. In the day they respected the consumers as grown up mature people that had backbone and character

Not much of an issue for a "work truck," which is what these were sold as. Plus speed limits were a lot lower back then...still does a mile a minute, uphill, at 7,000' MSL.

Christmas Gummyworm The one they were driving wasn't a 350. It was a 305. 30 years old in a lifted truck with giant tires going up a hill. Of course it can't keep up! Still running though! The 350 was running strong too.

a 383 9:1 with 180cc afr heads and a small cam is perfect for that truck. but, free motor from gm would mean getting a crate 6.0 or 6.2

My opinion for a crate motor would be a 383 with aftermarket EFI...like Holley. A 6.0 iron block would be cool too but it'd be sweet to keep it old school with modern upgrades instead of a restomod.

18k for a truck with rust? Guys a little nutty... So you got a set of military axles (2k on a really REALLY good day 1500 IRL) 350 with a few mods... why not a twin stick 205? sm465... pennies to buy. And a k10 frame rather than a k30... and lift work. Meh... Aint seeing 18k with rust.

Unless there is something really wrong with the stock engine I would just rebuild it. Maybe add a turbo for those uphill climbs. I think it's the gearing that is the main problem, those tires are not stock. My f-150 had the 4.9l strait 6, it would go fast uphills in 3rd gear with stock tire size.

The passenger side fender butchery on the '76 kills me. Would it have really taken that much effort to do it right??? And LS swaps are common because THEY WORK. You want good power out of an easily available motor with good/cheap parts availability in a small package? The answer is LS. However, for Big Green I'd just swap in a 350. They're a dine a dozen used, or pretty reasonable as a crate motor, AND it'll be plug and play. Or go the route that "Dirt Every Day" went with their K30, and swap in a GM crate LSA (the supercharged 6.2 from the Caddy CTS-V and Camaro ZL1), Awesome channel, btw, check it out!

If GM is going to assist with a crate motor, stay with the idea of keeping the theme of an "all GM components" truck. To make the swap as easy as possible, and as road worthy and usable as possible, going with a nice healthy Vortec style GM performance 383 small block stroker motor (GM Part #19332529 340H.P., 435 Lb-Ft. of torque), upgrade the cooling system, an E.F.I. system(Holley, Mallory, etc.), a modernized ignition system(say..., Mallory) and focus on your drivetrain with some gears from Yukon Gear, say 4.10:1(original 4-speed) or 4.33:1 (if you were to option out a later model 5-speed or 6-speed option, which would certainly help the over-the-road ability) with the size of tires you're using and add a set of ARB air lockers, or Detroit lockers. From that point, make sure all of your wear components like u-joints, seals, etc. are replaced and maintained, good brakes and a GOOD set of shocks like the Bilstiens on the 76 in the video, or a set of Fox shocks if you can get them. P.S.; I tried to drop a few names that you might try to get some "sponsorship" help from to gentlemen. Good luck and happy building!

What gear ratio does Big Green have. My '80 Powerwagon has 3.2ish gears. It also has the granny low first gear NP-435 transmission, turning 35" mud tires. Still running the original 360 4bbl, and the part of watching you guys bouncing around the cab, made me smile. My PW is like that, 4" lift, but it's a long bed, club cab, when my daughter was 6, her first ride in the truck, she looked at me, and said this is like riding in the back of a school bus. 15 years later I've gathered Dana 60 axles, NP-205 transfer case, and the 1 ton drive shafts. Going from 1/2 ton to 1 ton drive train. I think gear ratio is still to high, I wanted 4.10.

The small block 400 with a few tweaks would be unstoppable. I loved my 383 back in high school but, to make it what it was I found an incredible deal and had endless race parts to tweak it. The 400 would have been much more justifiable if every part needed was new from wallet. Nothing sounds like a good old carbureted. Getting to the point. Any engine can be loud. All you need is a crappy exhaust system. You could find a late model LS3 at about any salvage yard for cheap that would bury any stock carb Chevrolet engine. Or buy new LS3 430hp 425tq for $8,ooo. That is a decent engine for less than $10,000 that will be faster, get good mileage, and as loud as you tune the exhaust. But, you should already know all that.

2 Choices. #1 With 461 horsepower and 558 lb-ft of torque, our 502 HO crate engine has power on tap for every need - whether it’s a ’69 Chevelle at the drag strip or the Suburban that towed it there! #2 The HT502 is rated at 406 horsepower and a whopping 541 lb-ft of trailer-tugging torque. That’s more than the factory ever offered and more than you’ll get with a stock-type rebuild. It is uniquely suited to pre-1978 trucks, but is adaptable to a variety of applications.

Agreed 383 strokes; their to many ls swaps. Show us what you can do with a old school carb 383 and prove you can still make big power like they use to build them!

Ram Jet 350. Affordable crate engine with decent power. Modern fuel system/electronics but keeps the classic look. Inexpensive to swap as well.

The old V8's were so under powered. I had a '76 Camaro with a stock 305...It had a whopping 140 hp :\

Awesome trucks, personally I think that guy is high or maybe not enough oxygen to his brain in the high altitude or something.... He wants how much for that truck?

Would that crate engine diesel in Tube Sock from Dirt Everyday provide enough power for the K10?

A Cummins 4BT or 6BT would be a fun swap... if not then just a simple 5.3 out of the wreckers...

LS1 would be great and not be too expensive. I would bet the diff gears are factory which is why its a dog going up hill with those big tires. do front and rear lockers with higher ratio gear and you'll be set.

why not 5.3 swap it. it has allot of low end torque it's give you more fuel economy and parts are readily available. the get the six speed Trans behind that and a decent tcase and you should be good.

Nice truck , but the problem they never addressed for 50 years is that tiny cab . If you're 6"2 like myself , you can forget it . It becomes misery in about 10 miles

put a nice 350 small block putting out around 350hp in it and put 4.10 gears in it. that's all you need. go efi if you want the better reliability, fuel efficiency, and a smoother power band

Your green truck is lugging simply because of the oversized tires, they are heavy + 35 inch tires increase the gear ratio more for Speed than pulling

You definitely have a gearing problem, besides an old worn out engine. Don't change the transmission keep it manual.

GM is going to give them a crate engine; that meeting will determine what GM wants to promote on TFL's channel. I hope it is fuel injected.
