RC Everyday yeah I always wanted an old K series, in my neighborhood some dude was selling a relatively rust free K30 dump truck (With the GMC badges) and he was Asking like $4K for it, he has another K30 dump truck (have to assume it's a '88 or '89 model as it has a 3500 badge instead of a K30 badge) that he uses as a plow truck for his driveway, I'll have to definitely keep an eye out if he ever sells it, just put a bed on there and I've got myself a stock K30

lol how quickly people forget. Wait till the frame cracks at the power steering pump. enjoy all 120 horses that 305 puts out and gets 14mpg on the highway, going downhill with a tailwind. It also has "self changing oil" (it burns it, so you add more) enjoy cleaning carbs and repairing rust. I Love my 88 k5, but its a toy and beach cruiser, I'd rather have a 2017 f150(or whatever else) for day to day tasks. Also I wouldn't pay 5 or even 4 for this truck, but with these old trucks value is in the eye of the beholder.
@CJColvin
@CJColvin 7 лет назад
footbalr074 I have a 96 Ford F150 with 5.0L Windsor V8 with 203,393 miles on it and it's still going strong. The only thing I replaced on my truck was the starter but other than that most of every thing else was simple maintenance and cleaned out the transmission fluid just to get rid of the shuttering it was making and after haven't had a problem ever since.

I would have kept the 5k. Not to even mention 8.5k. Older guys just seem to get these for some nostalgia from their youth. Just like a 35 year old in a 1993 Mazda RX7 or Acrua NSX. Could have been great at the time, but now, shits just old...

You have to suit it to your needs. It's not a grocery getter, don't use this truck for that. Light duty pickup for light duty loads and driving. Thus isn't a 1985 baja special, or hot rod for that matter.

I'm 28 and DD an 87 K30 crew cab, 6bt swap. It's about having a real truck, not some bloated, overpriced, plastic clad, tech heavy piece of shit. I live in NS, ground zero for rust, the average person gets about 10 years out of a vehicle before its totally clapped out. then it becomes a "winter beater" where some poor bastard buys it for $300, puts $600 worth of bondo hair, brake lines, and exhaust work into it, and hopefully gets a winter or two out of it. whether its a cavalier, or a K10, most vehicles meet this fate. Supply and demand, clean squarebodies are hard to come by = $$$. I could get $10K for mine any day.

305 was a dog, but it got economy that's still competitive with modern tech with its full time 8 cylinder deactivation, and its absolutely bullet proof, always gets the job done. The aerodynamics probably won't reflect that lol, but it will be better then other options. Don't be afraid to floor it. If the lift is good, nothing will break and that's what you want in a good truck. Whatever you do, make sure the cooling system is up to snuff. Its old and it was made by some pretty cheap bastards. The bigger engines weren't able to run flat out...well they would do it, but it was only a matter of time before you had coolant everywhere. Course, we gave the Ike gauntlet a good show :) Damn they got hot. Iron heads were the only way to survive the way people beat on these things.

Even though it's a Chevy, I like it. I had a K20 with the 350 back in the day and it was tough as nails. This should be nice if you drop an LS into it. I have a '78 F250 4x4 and which I love and I'm pretty certain it will out live me. It would be kind of cool to compare 5 decades of pick-up trucks from Ford, Chevy & Dodge and see just what the hell when wrong in the last decade or so.

Sold my 85 k10 for a 86 f250 last year..... The fords do have nice little design and engineering features but it seems to make for more things to go wrong. Chevy might have been a bit less convenient to work on but required far less attention and work. But the interior and amenities in my extend cab bullnose feel like an RV compared to the bench and broken radio in my old square body. Each truck has their pros and cons but both are diesel 4x4 and manual transmission, transfer case and locking hubs. So both are winners in my book to this day I prefer the Chevy that I sold over the Ford I own but time and a new engine may change my mind.

Good point at 1:00 about the 305. GM made so many versions of the 305 and unfortunately the crappy economy versions are what people seem to remember. GM actually produced a few 305 motors that were amazing little 5.0 liters and actually HAULED A$$ lol. The 190hp high-output L69 "carburetor" motor that was in the G-code (8th digit VIN#) F-bodies and the even better 230hp LB9 "fuel injected" TPI (Tuned Port) motor that was in the G92 optioned 5-speed F-bodies (the automatic version had a weaker cam, so we won't include those lol). Those two 5-liter GM 305 motors would compete with Ford's ever-popular 225hp 5.0 liter H.O 302. So, next time you speak ill of a GM 305, please remember that 230hp 1LE optioned '80s street fighter that stole the title from the Saleen Mustang in Showroom Stock Road Racing in the late '80s. That was one nasty little factory 305 lol.

Anybody know where to find a 3+3 SRW square body? hardest damn truck to find.
@701chevy9

The hardest truck to find because chevy didn't make a factory crew cab short bed squarebody lol

Bill Z yup, I'm here in Saginaw and have been trying to set up flights and road trips to go pick some up on the west coast but they sell faster than you can even post them for sale.

Awesome truck. My old 96 Yota 4 banger had locking hubs. Always had to lock 'em up before going out in the mud. Fun times. I'd love to get a truck like this one day to fix up.

Dale Couture was it a huge improvement off road?, was the frame on your 96 Yota broken in half when you sold it 8 years later?

guy proulx Way better off-road. More power, rear locker, etc.

I love those old square body chevys, I had a 79 that was basically that green color but had way more rust...on the bright side it had the 350 and glass packs so it was plenty loud and I never got stuck in that thing...makes me sad I sold it.

Bought my dad's 85 swb 4x4 when I was 15 and a 87 K5 4x4 when I was 19. Both were black, completely rust free and in excellent condition. The a/c still worked in both. Sold them both as package deal for $7000 when I was 23. 12 years after selling them (35 now) I think about them EVERYDAY and still have dreams about them both every once in awhile

You will not find anything like those anymore, if they go below 2010 don't even look at it because in one year you will have re-placed all the plastic and and the additional plastic parts which is your " COMPLETE TRUCK " SO STAY AT 2010 & BELOW. You made a great DEAL *****

beautiful truck, the only thing that stops me from getting one is that they don't have the abs brake system, when those bad boys locked their wheels on you, shit and you are trying not to hit the guy in front of you, that's the worse feeling...
@JohnDoeEagle1

They don't have tire pressure sensors or any of the other modern electronic crap that goes wrong and turns a pickup into a piece of junk inside of 10 years either. I hate independent suspension on a pickup and 6 way power leather, ass warmers and all that other junk guys think they need on a pickup as well. It's a pickup.....not for metrosexual pillow princesses posing as impostor rugged blue collar men. Less is MORE!!

Nice. I have that same truck. 85 K10 75,000 miles. Mine is stock with that under power 305. Its has around 10% body rust and being it’s a Michigan truck that’s considered rust free up here in the north salt belt. I paid $2,500. Runs great. I have plans for it. Great truck.

Well bought! I LOVE that truck! Square body Chevies are my favorite trucks, my first vehicle was a '73 K10 shorty that I bought in '93 when I was 15. I worked on it through high school and had it looking pretty much like that one. Mine had a bit more power though, as it had a warmed over 350 with an intake, cam, headers and true duals ;) Even with an automatic it'd spin 35's from a standstill. I really kick myself for selling that truck, I hope to get another at some point, or perhaps a K5. They're really tough to find in New England though, the years have not been kind to them. Guess I'll have to start looking down south.

This brings back memories. My dad had an 87, I believe it was, where they went to quad headlights and moved the signal in. Same layout though. RCLB, 4x4, 305 with the 3 speed with unsynchronised low. Before I had a license I used to drive that thing (way too hard) farm to farm. Talk about gutless though. Nice find guys. Cheers.

SM465! Too bad it doesn't have the factory tach, though I *think* that year has a hydraulic clutch, which is a plus offroad. I grew up in Flagstaff. We had both Ford and GM delivery/service trucks for our family business, and with out a doubt, the Chevy/GMCs were the ones that would start in the winter. Drop a LSx motor in there!

Dump the 305 for at least a 350, Corp 14 rear, Dana 60 front. Detroit locker in the Corp 14 rear. That is probably the SM465 manual transmission, there bullet proof. The NP208 transfer case is not terrible, but the can crack if you hit something hard with the front axle and compress the front drive shaft into it... I have had multiple 70 through 80 Chevys. Good truck. Those 35 inch tires can break the rear semi floater Corp 10 bolt axle if you get too rambunctious, put a Corp 14 in it at least...
