Very cool conversation from two of my favorite credit card creators! Great to hear both about credit cards and YT tips, especially hearing how both of you started! Some very solid advice in this video! Nice way to hang out with you two while flying ✈️
Thank you so much Stan!! This was definitely one of my favorite videos to film.. not only did I get to chat with Daniel in person finally, but I got to talk about my favorite things. Also, thanks for listening during your travels man!
Man, seeing you two have a casual but informative conversation like this fills my heart. You too seem like amazing peeps, which is super refreshing and makes me want to continue being part of the credit card/finance niche. I hope we can all get together with our subscribers one day and hang out! 🥂😊
Thank you so much for the kind words Dayana! That means a lot. It'd be awesome to meet up some time for sure. I know Luke from Luke's Points and Miles is putting on a Vegas meetup Labor Day weekend in Vegas that I'll be attending along with other creators too! And if you're interested, I'd love to have you on for a conversation like this one day! Feel free to DM me or something if you wanna talk more about either of those!
Spencer. That comment you made about "As a viewer I can watch the same topic of a video from many different creators" i feel completely the same. When Chase recently came out with the 80k bonus on the Sapphire Perferred, everyone and their momma made a video about it. I watched about 5 different creators because I enjoy their personalities. I also really enjoy some of the smaller creators such as yourself, Luke, JP etc. I'm happy for you going fulltime! I enjoy a lot of credit card content but this creator series is my favorite of all and look forward to all future ones. Great convo with Daniel! Really enjoying it.
I’m glad you resonated with that! And I appreciate you supporting us smaller creators too. It’s hard to break in to some of those topics that so many larger channels cover, so your support doesn’t go unnoticed! Thank you for watching this one too and I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome conversation. I liked the dynamic of the discussion, from talking about building your RU-vid, to the different credit card setups, to loosely discussing Chase vs Amex. This was great! Always a good time to listen to this while getting a workout in.
That means a lot CJ! This conversation was very much up my alley of interests, so I felt like we could keep going forever. Thank you for being here as always man!
Damn this was so good. Both you guys make such good content. Daniel is gonna hit 100K very soon and I have a feeling you’re about to take off big. Keep grinding man!
That means a lot dude. I think the in person experience made it a lot of fun. I hope you’re right about our successes as well. I appreciate you being there since super early on! Your camera is still killing it for me haha.
Appreciate you Mark! I know I've said it before but your channel was a big motivation to me when I got started, so now it's cool to see that the 3 of us have grown and can help spread the word about credit cards and other good money habits here on RU-vid!
Awesome to hear more about Daniel's background, both of your YT Journey's so far, YT Strategy and all of the good stuff that we as Creators love to hear about. Also super cool to see both of you guys meeting up and taking this episode in-person! Great video here Spencer!
Thanks so much Matt! I had a blast with this one and I figured other creators would like the conversation as well. I’m excited to do more in person conversations soon!
Daniel, I am Chase over Amex too! I have 4 chase cards and only $95 in annual fees. I don't yet have Amex cards. But 260k UR in SUB (2 Ink cards) 70k United SUB (gateway card downgrade for $0 annual fee 2nd year) and 50k in referral bonuses in my first year with Chase. $0 in first year annual fees with Chase. Love it.
That’s awesome man. Chase treats their customers right! I do love Amex as well, but Chase’s cards are so easy to get value from they’re a no brainer for a lot of folks.
This was an awesome conversation Spencer! I actually got into the whole credit card game from watching Daniel so seeing you guys collab is crazy man! Keep up the great work brother, love seeing you grow & motivating the rest of the community to grow with you as well 🙌🏻
Thanks so much man! We had a great time filming it for sure. Daniel's an inspiration to many including myself so it was great to get to chat with him in person. I really appreciate your constant support man!
Awesome collaboration! If i remember I think Daniel and Brendan Paules from magnified money are one of the first RU-vidrs I saw that got me into the credit card game. The first video I saw of Dani was the “5 best bank accounts”. I was looking for a new checking account and found Interesting what he was saying on his videos, from there I saw his videos on credit cards and realized how much I was missing and begun my credit card game journey, thanks Dani
Thanks so much Chris! Daniel and Brendan were two guys I watched before starting a channel of my own as well and the information they've provided has been super valuable to me. I hope you enjoy getting to hear more from Daniel here today. Thanks for being here!
This was such an interesting discussion! I really enjoyed hearing about Daniel’s RU-vid journey so far and found the tips on getting started on the platform to be really valuable. The fact that you guys were able to film this in person too added a really nice touch. I’m really looking forward to the next interview in the series!
I’m glad you enjoyed it Jeffrey!! I definitely want to do more in person interviews so I’m excited to continue the series with that in mind. Thank you so much for your constant support!
Daniel helped me get my first credit card and HYSA. Now I'm inspiring my family members to not be scared of these things and use them to your advantage. Thank you!
LOVED this video you guys! 🤙🏼 Great to experience this conversation between 2 of my favorite channels within the credit card / finance niche. Proud to see how far this interview series has come Spencer!
Thanks so much Chase! We definitely had a good time filming this one in person, so I’ll have to come visit you to do our next one together I guess 🤷🏼♂️😆 I appreciate you though man! It’s definitely a blessing to be where I’m at today.
There definitely needs to be a balance but for those of us that love it, it can be hard to not continually work unfortunately. I’m working on this myself!
I watch RU-vid all day and it doesn't feel like work, but I know it is because I'm constantly learning things from other creators. It's so much fun though!
Lol yeah I was waiting for a comment about that - completely forgot about that as we were filming. But it acted as an extension cable with the outlet it had to power our cameras haha
This was such a great video! Honestly loved it and find both of you guys to be some of my favorites to watch when I watch these types of videos on RU-vid. Keep it up and hope success can come to both of you guys! The only question I have is if someone wanted to try to start a channel, what programs or things do you use to make your videos? Not sure if I’ll start one but have looked into it at times, but was just wanting to make sure if I did start that they would be more high quality and have good graphics and transitions.
Thanks so much man! That really means a lot. I know we all use slightly different softwares for our work. For thumbnails, Daniel and I both use Canva Pro but a lot of folks use Photoshop if they have the Adobe Creative Cloud license with Adobe Premier Pro for editing as well. For editing I use Filmora Pro (cuz I’m cheap) and Daniel has generally used Final Cut Pro on Mac. It really depends what you’re looking for, but I know many people including myself who started with an iPhone and iMovie. Whatever gets you started the easiest is the way to go!
Thanks for watching! And I completely agree with Spencer there - those are some of the programs that we've used, but it's best to just get started with an iPhone and iMovie or something similar. You figure it out as you go and it's fun!
Great video! I actually watched the whole 1 hour plus convo. Really good and inspiring information, as I am looking to move forward with a travel/credit card youtube channel. Love the collaboration as well!
Wow, thank you for doing that! I'm glad you found it valuable. Daniel definitely is a great person to be able to chat with about not only credit cards, but building a RU-vid channel as well. Best of luck to you as you get started man!
Fantastic video! I have been enjoying all of these videos. I also watch Daniel and enjoy his channel so it was nice seeing you interview him! Loved the tips he shared also for aspiring RU-vid content creators!
I’m glad you enjoyed it man! These videos are my favorite to make and I love getting to connect with folks so it’s awesome to hear people are enjoying them a lot. Thanks so much for watching!
I love to hear that man. Thanks for watching it all the way through!! I'm glad you found it valuable. It was one I had a great time filming so it's cool to hear the impact it has on folks.
This is a great video! Basically you guys provided your blueprint in a very transparent way! I have been dragging my feet on starting a channel! I put out one video and got 3 views! I just stopped but I am going to start back and attempt to be consistent!
I really appreciate you saying that!! I got a few more Creator Conversations episodes coming out over the next month or so, and I hope you enjoy those too!
Let's gooo! Awesome video, it's always great seeing how the big dogs do it and learn from all their experience with credit cards and successful RU-vid channel!
This was an awesome convo!! Appreciate you both for the convo! So awesome hearing you both also reference understanding RU-vid in order to grow! Also Spencer I appreciate the vidIQ Shoutout (Im head of Social Media with vidIQ) 👏👏👏👏👏
Thanks so much man! I’m really glad this video popped on your radar as you’ve been someone I’ve gained a lot of value from over my RU-vid journey. VidIQ (as a tool and a channel) have been instrumental in helping me grow!
Hey Spencer. Great video. You mentioned that CSR was one of the best economy domestic travel card I would love to see a discussion of a few great cards for economy domestic travel. Thanks.
@@SpencerJohnsonOfficial took notes from the advices you both gave on how to growth a new RU-vid channel. I started posting videos in Spanish 4 weeks ago so I’m sure those tips will help me a lot! Thanks for putting such a great content! Huge fan of both!
That’s great to hear man. You’re so knowledgeable in this space that your advice will go a long way for folks. I’m glad this episode was helpful for you and don’t hesitate to reach out if you have questions!
Topic suggestion: Using a VPN to minimize your exposure to scammers while you're online. Also, which credit card apps work while using a VPN, and which don't, or require extra steps to login. Also: Using a VPN to get better welcome offers and bookings.
HI -- I've just gotten into the RU-vid game (actiually started in February) posting videos of my trips and trying to explain to people how to do the same thing I'm doing with points and miles. It's been slow but I'm determined to stay in the game and hit my numbers. Congrats on all your success Spencer and hopefully we can connect down the road, trade stories and see each other at the top. All the best!
That’s great to hear you got started!! That’s the hardest step. The growth will come in waves, but if you stay committed to your work and keep trying to get better with each video, that’s the important thing! I hope we can connect offline as well one day. Keep up the great work man! And thank you for your support!
I think having Amex takes more strategy; and if you have a good one, you’ll benefit more from Amex. It also has the edge on prestige. CSR is just a powerhouse of a travel card for the everyday person.
I think you’re right! Amex has much higher upside with the credits that come on their cards, but for an everyday person, Chases cards can do just find. It all depends on the person behind the card!
Thanks Mark! Definitely a big move but I’m super happy I took the leap. I’m gonna have to come visit you soon and do some work with you in person if you’re down!
The Amex Plat is a terrible card if it’s your only one. Almost all your purchases will earn only 1x MR. You need at least a Blue Business Plus as well to cover everyday spending since it earns 2x MR on everything. If an Amex Plat is otherwise good for you and you have sufficient assets with Schwab such that you can get a discount on the annual fee then it’s worth having.
This was an awesome video Spencer. Loved hearing about both your RU-vid journeys. I have a lot of respect for Daniel and his content. Seems like he’s genuinely a good guy and is supportive of other creators in the same niche, which isn’t always the case unfortunately. Daniel’s journey has been inspiring to watch! Awesome conversation and great idea! Oh, and Chase all the way! 😆
Thank you so much Ethan! I completely agree with your assessment of Daniel. He’s been super supportive of my journey so far and I couldn’t be more appreciative… and I’m glad you like Chase as well! I think a mix of both setups can be good, but Chase’s cards are always easy for me to recommend.
Thanks Ethan, appreciate it man! Thanks for always watching and commenting on my videos as well, it means a lot! I try to just be me in my content and talk about my thoughts so I'm glad that it comes across that way. Love to see you channel's growth - you've had a couple videos take off!
@@Daniel_Braun Of course man! You've got great content and I appreciate the support of my channel from you. You've always been a class act, even to smaller creators, and I think that character shows through in your content.
I always think that if you put both grocery+dining on Gold card it's kind of unbalanced if you were to run two systems, unless your "everything else" spending is quite a lot too and you put that on Freedom unlimited. If I had a Gold I would put just grocery on gold (though I don't have it yet because I've been having chase bonus on grocery (first years+cobranded targeted offer)). Maybe someone can run a detailed math on how to keep a "balanced" two-system setup.
It all depends on your spending habits. In my opinion there’s nothing wrong with having cards that overlap in categories as you may want points in certain ecosystems over another. However, there are ways to have a completely optimal setup if that’s what you really want. It’s an interesting idea for a video for sure!
A BIG advantage for Chase over AMX... On earning big bonuses that require a $4,000 / 3 months spend, Chase has the edge with their Visa cards because you can use Plastiq to pay your rent by either direct deposit or a check to your landlord. Unfortunately, Plastiq no longer accepts American Express. Now, for me to efficiently achieve BIG AMX bonuses, I have to put a big travel spend on the new card. So Plastiq rent is a good thing. It overcomes the opportunity cost on the Sapphire curds which do not have a groceries category.
Those are great points! Unfortunately it doesn’t seem like Plastiq will be around longer with their bankruptcy but it’s cool to see you’ve been able to use them in the past!
@@SpencerJohnsonOfficial Oh! I knew about them bouncing back from Silicon Valley Bank, but I wasn't aware of their bankruptcy filing. Thanks for the heads up! I guess I'll have to plan my welcome bonuses with major travel.
@@fogrunr5075 No problem! It's definitely unfortunate cuz I know that was a really powerful tool for folks... hopefully another company will do something similar soon!
@@fogrunr5075 I plan my welcome bonuses around insurance and estimated tax payments. The 2.3% overhead sucks but my annual homeowner’s insurance bill, for example, knocks out most of an Ink’s $6k MSR by itself. Estimated tax payments can be almost arbitrarily large. If you will owe say $20k in income tax for the year piecing that into chunks makes earning signup bonuses almost trivial.
@@Daniel_Braun You're welcome Daniel! You have change my traveling life with your valuable content and I would to thank you so much and encourage you to keep up the good work D!
I'd like to see a video about why you think Amex points are better for high end international redemptions than Chase. I think that's nonsense. One or the other may be better in a specific scenario but overall they both work great if there's availability
I think it all comes down to specific redemptions. Both can be extremely valuable, but I think Daniel was more getting at the fact that Amex is perceived as a more luxury lender so most people who do massive luxury redemptions are doing so with Amex points. I don’t wanna speak for him, but that’d be my guess!
Both Chase and Amex absolutely have ways to get high end redemptions depending on where you wanna go! The benefit with Amex is that they just have more partners than Chase - but there's also a lot of overlap between the major transfer partners as well so you can't go wrong with either
Thank you so much! That’s great to hear since no one has ever said that before. If you don’t mind me asking, how many ads popped up for you? And by ads I mean video ads? RU-vid doesn’t really tell us these things very well so it’s good to hear from y’all.
Hi Tammy, just to update you, I've done what I can on my end to turn them down. I'd still love to hear how many you think you saw so I can ensure my content isn't being advertised too heavily, at least to the point I can control. RU-vid will do what they want at the end of the day which can sometimes be unfortunate. Thanks again for the heads up!
Do you both see a strong possibility (I do) that a lot of credit card issuers start denying people for new cards, even those with decent credit over the next year? There's major talk that the credit card debt crisis is coming and there's no question that the "game" is a big cause. We have many people getting the bonuses, but simply unable to payoff the bill, accruing interest and yet traveling with the rewards they earn. I do believe that we're about to see a bigtime shift in the next 12 months as many financial analysts believe that credit debt could cause a bigtime crash with those under 35. That coupled with the beginning of the student loan payments again will furthermore stress the pockets of many young people. Thoughts?
I don't think they'll stop approving people for credit cards for the sole fact that they're worried people will default on payments necessarily. Tbh, that's how they make a lot of money. In a small bubble it may seem like people are applying for tons of cards for the bonuses alone, but there are really only a very select number of people that do that in the US. However, I wouldn't be surprised if they lower bonuses and restrict people getting the highest offers possible (like Amex is now) so they can save during times of economic turbulence. I don't foresee the credit card game getting a massive nerf though necessarily.
This was so insightful! I loved it! Who knows if this is true but I have a prediction for Daniel, My prediction: Hits (at least) 250k subs, but I think he gets there with shorts. I could be wrong, but I have an inkling that he’s working on a backlog of hundreds of shorts just waiting to be launched and maybe they’ll all be finished in 6 months etc. I think he launches the RU-vid consulting and it’ll be a huge hit, it’s a great business and something I’d pay for myself. Amazing conversation Spencer + Daniel, really did provide a ton of value and gives alot of light to us who are looking to be in your guys shoes hopefully soon!
Thank you for watching Tony!! And I'm glad you found it valuable! That would be quite the prediction you made if it came true haha. I think no matter what he does he'll be successful with it but I've always been a fan of how hard he focuses on his normal long-form videos. I know he'd do well with Shorts too, but to get there completely without them would be impressive too. I'd love to see him launch some YT consulting as well! Thanks again for being here man, it means a lot!
I love the prediction! Shorts are definitely coming soon and I'm trying to figure out the best way to do it - but long form is definitely my main focus for the channel. Hoping to experiment with Shorts this summer though when I have some free time. YT Consulting coming soon too because I love talking RU-vid!
@@SpencerJohnsonOfficial @Daniel Braun Absolutely, I think it’s so impressive that just the long form is pushing really both of you so far, and that’s really the most powerful way I feel. In terms of true audience really. No doubts that you will see hypergrowth this year, I’m very excited to see what’s to come!
My father-in-law has the AMEX platinum and gold and he doesn’t travel at all, but he definitely puts probably five to $10,000 a month in spending in those cars. Status symbol for him lol.
Wait I just fully realized what you said... If he doesn't travel then the Platinum card is like the worst card for him to get 😂 His cash back rate is 0.6 cpp without the Charles Schwab Platinum card. Hopefully he isn't redeeming that way. He should get a metal cash back card like the Altitude Reserve or something from US bank. Anything but the Platinum if he doesn't travel 🤣
Hi! If you live in Europe, your card selection will look a bit different. I’m not as familiar with the cards you have access too but it sounds like you’re running a business so a business dedicated credit card could be great for you. Usually one with a simple higher than average base earning rate is a great place to start!
I also just did my first credit card video. My channel is a variety channel and I'm not planning on turning it into a credit card channel. Just a few card videos per year on what's in my wallet, what my current plan is for future cards and future strategy.
Thanks for letting me know! Unfortunately RU-vid doesn’t tell us exactly how many will be shown to viewers, so you never really know. How many did you see do you think? I try to really limit them but as I said, RU-vid doesn’t tell us how many they truly show.
Okay that’s good to know. The ones I add in there are at breaks of a question or something like that, but it seems youtube is pushing some I don’t add in. That’s good to keep in mind though. I went ahead and lowered them as I can on my end but we’ll see if YT picks that up. Thank you for making me aware of that!
Well RU-vid generally shows them according to the viewer’s tolerances, so it seems they don’t know you very well yet. I did not put that many ads on it, but can you give me better information as to how many you really did see? I can always try to get them to show less, but unfortunately I never know exactly how many are shown.
Just to update you, I've done what I can on my end to turn them down. I'd still love to hear how many you think you saw so I can ensure my content isn't being advertised too heavily, at least to the point I can control. RU-vid will do what they want at the end of the day which can sometimes be unfortunate. Thanks again for the heads up!
I agree! As I said in the video, I think Chases cards are ideal for an everyday person like myself. However, I like the finer things too from time to time 🤷🏼♂️
You guys ever thought about what would happen to your guys’s channel if the government decides to take away credit card sign up bonuses and rewards? It’s very possible. I would think about diversifying your content.
@@SpencerJohnsonOfficial I feel like you were being facetious with your response when I was generally trying to give some input. Nobody got time to watch that whole video so I might have skipped some parts.
@@ShortJoey I think intent behind wording can be confusing sometimes, especially through text. I do truly appreciate your concern but yes we did talk about that. Not just because of what could happen in legislation but in order to reach wider audiences as well. Next time we should both preface with a slightly less accusatory tone though. I do appreciate you man!
I honestly feel bad about this man. I know you’ve been a big supporter of the channel and I can see that you were being genuine in your question. I always feel super blessed than anyone watches even just a second of my video and I’m extremely grateful that you clicked on this one in the first place. I don’t want you to think I’m being facetious.. I just think we both kinda misread the situation, and I’ll take the blame for that. Thank you for your constant support and I hope you can forgive my tone in my response!
@@SpencerJohnsonOfficial Bro don’t worry about it, it’s all love! Looks like I may have interpreted wrong, Love your content and effort you put forth your channel.
