I've quit a 17-year nicotine addiction and three years of intense alcohol use. Coffee is the most addictive thing I have experience with. I'm rating in terms of how much personal willpower it takes to stay off it, how many times I have fallen off the wagon, and how important it seems to me to get it regularly. I think people should be careful with substances that are so addictive.

When I was a preteen, there was a sweet elderly black man who worked for my dad in our family convenience store. Everybody called him "Major". Major was like a grandfather to me and my older brother and younger sister. Every morning my dad would always make a pot of strong coffee for he and Major to sip on. One Saturday morning, while I was hanging out at the store, I got a cup of coffee in one of those white foam cups. Major spotted me siping on it and came over and whispered to me, "That coffee is gonna make you black as I is, if you keep drinking it." I think about his words every time I drink coffee. I miss you Major.

Exactly. You just proved my point, which I'm trying to help others to see. Coffee is toxic and the more you drink, the more your body is stressed, the more it produces stress hormones and that is why you cannot sleep. Coffee is in no way good for you at all. Plus it's like an enema which flushes your electrolytes and minerals, thus depleting you. I'm really shocked that Ken would say these things because I thought he knew better. Avoid coffee or limit it.

Your body makes you need caffeine to function i would get 1/4 the way through the day and need a top up then lunch time id need another top up or i would have no energy left to function, now I can go 12 hours with no breaks no problem just drinking a lot of water and I have a very physical job. Keep in mind that if you are drinking any average, non-organic, story bought coffee you are consuming one of the most chemically contaminated food products there is. Since I switched to a clean, organic, fresh ground coffee the difference in how I feel is night and day, as well as the difference in the quality of the flavor. I also only drink 2 cups per morning (3 on occasion) and that is the only time I drink it. Take away...beware commercial, off the shelf coffee.

I'll add to the last post and confirm. Between store bought instant coffee (that nasty factory processed dust), and a proper freshly ground, home brewed coffee, the difference is night and day. Any instant coffee drinkers out there? Get yourself a few inexpensive things, a proper Burr Grinder, and a French Press for brewing, and a small supply of Arabica whole beans.

When I was younger, I shook badly when I had a black coffee that it was embarrassing. So I stopped drinking it. Later Dr. Berry told the youtube world about checking B12 if someone has heart palpitations, and my doc totally was amazed. I had never been checked before and it was ridiculously low. My heart problems were caused by a super low B12. So I tried coffee again after having my weekly B12 shots (B12 shots leave my body in 6 days), and NO JITTERS, no shaking, no weirdness. I think my low B12 levels (which I may have had for decades) may have caused the over-sensitivity to coffee. Thanks again, Dr. Berry for making that video on B12. NO ONE ever checked it until I insisted after seeing your video.

No mention of ochratoxin A in coffee. No mention of the detox symptoms coming off coffee that people are reporting. Coffee is also estrogenic with data showing its ability to increase SHBG at the hepatocytes. I could go on but lets say this, if your over a cup every once in awhile you might wanna reconsider. Coffee drinkers tend to have a lot of confirmation bias so lets look at the studies and get very transparent about coffee use and let people decide after the evidence is presented.

Like so many of these myths and findings, much of it depends on the individual. I guess it's a human trait to want universal application of these findings...For me there's a balance point between just enough and too much caffeine...The thought of that hot, heavy creamed goodness gets me out of bed in the morning with a skip in my step. But I've had cluster headaches for several years now and have been experimenting with different mixes and blends,(caf/decaf). Most don't realize that the darker the roast the less caffeine (due to longer roasting time). I've heard some say that coffee is not allowed on strict PHD's, but for all of us this is a personal journey and what we eat is entirely up to us, no matter what others say....There was a great line Ferrigno said on a podcast when asked what was the worst thing about PHD...Without hesitation, while cutting his steak, he said "other people"....

Not for me. I love coffee 2 to 3 cups per day but I know for sure when I quit and I have done it several times I have less joint pain and inflammation, less joint cracking, I have more energy throughout the day, am happier and less irritable. Sleep better and just get more stuff done. I just quit again 2 days ago and already feel better....so I'm not at all a believer of those studies. Sure temporarily it will make you concentrate better but throughout the day all day it will actually make concentration worse.....there was a study done that said after drinking coffee for a long time the caffeine high and energy boost you get from coffee is just your body reaching it's normal state of energy because your output has been lowered. I think it negatively effects your adrenal glands. Like I said i love coffee and I will probably always have some but I also know it can have a negative effect on me. Can't wait for a cold brew in the summer.

Completely agree. It makes me jittery. Having said that, I've experienced times like when on holiday when relaxing and getting lots of sun, that I feel great. Maybe relaxing for 3-4 days or more, plus getting good amounts of sun can balance things out so I feel good and not jittery or anxious. Maybe more exercise could work for me too. Who knows. I'm just going to continue experimenting but definitely my rule of thumb is no caffeine currently if I want to feel my best.

Great information, thank you! One other aspect of modern coffee drinking that I can't seem to find a reliable source and answer for is, what health impact does the high pesticide usage actually have on the consumer? I've seen experts say it's extremely detrimental and only organically grown coffee is healthy. But is this actually true? Do the pesticides linger through the cultivating and roasting process, and do we ingest measurable, toxic levels of chemical pesticides over time? I don't follow fads or fear-trends, but I would love to get a good answer to this. Dr. Berry, do you know? (Thanks for your terrific videos!)

Here are the facts: 1) organic isn't the magic bullet it's marketed as. 2) many of the farmers who grow coffee are too poor to afford pesticides anyway. 3) some of the organic pesticides allowed for coffee growers are quite harmful to downstream life 4) avoiding mass market brands/buying better quality coffee from a local roaster resolves most of your concerns.

For several years we had a Family Doctor (in the UK) who would hand you a data sheet as you walked into his surgery blaming just about every known illness on drinking coffee! Whether you went in with haemorrhoids or ingrowing toenails he would blame it on your coffee consumption and tell you to stop drinking it and you will get better. He even told me once that taking LSD was much better for you than coffee! Luckily he has now retired, I never did take his advice although these days being in my 70s I only take one Cup in the morning (instead of breakfast) and a second Cup with my first meal of the day around 12noon. As I have stopped drinking alcohol as part of my Keto/IF eating plan, Coffee has increasingly become my one remaining slightly guilty pleasure. However, it's put me off a bit after reading Paul Saladino MDs new book where he lists many toxins in it. I'm still having it, but it has worried me. What do you think Dr Ken? Have you had chance to read the book? Also does water treated (not chemical treated) decaffeinated coffee still contain the vitamins and minerals that you mentioned? I can't see how removing the caffeine using a non chemical method would remove any goodness, but I'm no expert. Thanks for any further information.

Coffee is bad for people like me who have a sensitivity to it. It makes me break out in an itchy rash that goes away once I discontinue drinking it. Also, coffee bean can contain mycotoxins that might cause a severe reaction ranging from slight headache to anaphylactic shock. If you suffer from an ongoing unwell feeling or mysterious physical symptoms - consider the coffee you're drinking, especially if it's a coffee blend like Folgers or some other major brand. Also, caffeine addiction is a real thing, and is something to be aware of. If you're a man consider the fact that coffee is a diuretic, and as such may complicate the symptoms men have related to BPH, which is about 50% + of the older male population. To say coffee is good for you is too broad a statement. Each individual should consider their own state of health and the impact drinking coffee may have on it.

I used to drink 5-6 cups a day, but I`m talking about the European style coffee, not the US soupy style. I was alive, could sleep like a baby and enjoyed every minute of my life. After 8 years, I started to have heart palpitations. Later I developed high stress and anxiety. Than severe depression came. I could not give up my caffeine addiction. Only than I realized that I`m so addicted that I rather push myself in to chest pain, heart palpitation, anxiety and panic attacks with GERD than giving it up. I tried to force myself back to the old way for a year. Than I reduced the quantity gradually. It was better, therefore I ramped it up again and all the same terrible feelings came back. I id quit cold turkey than. I did not drink it for a year, I felt great but one day I thought I will have a cup as I was tired after the morning gym session and I still had plenty of jobs to do. That cup was glorious, it felt like I had it for the first time. I was happy, motivated, energetic. I pushed it up to 2 cups a day, it was working fine. One day I had 3 cups and all the same symptoms came back. I had to give up again as a single cup of coffee made me anxious and panicky. It seems I stuck on an occasional one cup, but only when I`m so tired that my nervous system does not react adversely to it. Also caffeine`s effect is stronger on Keto / Carnivore as I realized, same like alcohol or anything that is a toxin basically :)

Hey Doc, thanks for the info on coffee, I am sensitive to caffeine in any form such as colas, chocolate, tea and coffee. 1 cup of regular coffee has me shaky and starving for my breath. This can go on for 2-3 hours until the effects wear off. Decaf is OK and I do drink a cup or 2 each day but can't do the regular caffeinated coffee thing. I think this is more common than we suspect judging by the amount of decaf restaurants and coffee shops sell. What's your take on why some of us are so sensitive to caffeine?

Lies my doctor told me: that consuming caffeine is fine or even healthy. Quitting caffeine is one of the smartest things you can do. It is not healthy to consume a stimulant on a daily basis. It will negatively impact your adrenals and dopamine system. It floods your body with stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline and increases stress and anxiety along with elevated blood pressure and can cause heart palpitations. It drastically lowers the quality of your sleep because of its long half-life (even for people who think their sleep is fine). What are some causes or symptoms of poor health? Stress, high blood pressure, poor sleep. Unfortunately most people are still stuck in trying to justify this literal addiction to a drug in the same class as amphetamines and cocaine. Even people who are against all others drugs somehow make an exception for caffeine or don't even consider it a drug because of how widespread its use is. Read the book Caffeine Blues if you want to know more. There is legitimate research out there, but the companies that profit off caffeine don't want you to know. Or Matthew Walker's book about sleep if you want to know more about the impact on sleep.

I didn't start drinking coffee until I was in my late twenties. I've been a daily coffee drinker for over 10 years, and I've gone through stints where I had to reduce the amount I was drinking. Other than that I never seem to have any issues. Last year I quit drinking coffee for 30 days just to see how I felt. I had no noticeable change in my energy levels or Sleep Quality. I didn't feel any better or worse, and I am very picky about how I eat and feel. So, I went back to it, because I enjoy it. One or two cups of black coffee a day are an enjoyable decision for me. It's not something I do thoughtlessly. I do agree that everyone should experiment with or without it, and not assume that it's okay for them. But honestly as careful as I am with everything else I eat, if black coffee is my one compromise, I'm okay with that.

Doctors found out I was over 100 levels below minimum level for B12. I was drinking a large pot of coffee per day, sometimes two, which my doctor told me caffeine reduces B12 in the body so that's how I became severely B12 deficient. After getting B12 shots & taking sublingual B12 tablets I began feeling better after a month. So beware & take B12 vitamins if you drink caffienated coffee.
