I take up to 50 grams of a multi type collagen per day. I find it very helpful. The obvious downside though is that the cost adds up.Collagen is expensive
It's on sale at Costco for 22 bucks for 2 lbs chocolate. Grass fed. Until January 27th 2024 This lasts me about 3 months but I also understand that that may not be cheap for everyone's budget and everyone may not have a Costco membership
I take collagen daily….and on workout days it goes in my protein shake with Isolate whey and some creatine. Been doing this for several years now. Ive put muscle on….have great skin and less wrinkles then I had. Im 54 and putting on muscle was impossible I thought. I can even train with my youngest son 22, and hold my own. Collagen is awesome….i have to cut my hair and trim my nails constantly. Everyone should take it.
I had a SLAP repair (labrum) on both shoulders, 6 years apart. My surgeon was an NFL team doc for 23 years. One shoulder was never quite right after the surgery. I bought some collagen on sale at Costco for no particular reason. I noticed my bad shoulder feeling much better. Stopped the collagen for several months and was having a bad time with the shoulder. I went back to the collagen pain is gone. Miraculous.
Have you looked into BCP 157 treatment? It's a peptide used by pro athletes to speed recover from tears, broken bones and surgeries. Locate a center near you, don't try to administer it yourself.
@nriqueog I also have a torn labrum but never had the surgery bc I have a 1y and a 3y old and nobody to care for my babies during recovery. So I did PT and have been ginger with it ..but it's so much better with time. I'd love to hear more about what you're talking about to help heal this.
@@amyt6592 the collagen I take seem to help with post op complications. Not aware of anything that could heal a tear. It's a tough recovery, and you're wise to wait until you have help with your young ones.
I always have a scoop of collagen peptides and a scoop of whey protein in my shakes and also in my overnight oats for breakfast too. It makes a big difference to recovery on joints. It makes sense, we were always supposed to eat the whole animal and not just the muscle meat.
I blend my own protein. Its 10g whey 10g collagen 10g colostrum 1 gram digestive enzymes 3g of hmb and 5g of creatine, i also add 20g of dextrose and have it immediately post workout. I like it alot. 😊
Dude, that's a nice blend there....care to share your whey brand and digestive enzymes?...even better if your choice of whey is unflavored. My current protein blend routine is with about 2 teaspoon from Birchbenders? Keto cupcake mix; it's fairly clean and the chocolate flavor is strong. Get tons of uses out of a 10-12 oz bag with negligible carbs/sugar.
Not sure about these days, but back in the 70's and 80's, hospitals would give Jello to patients after surgery or delivering a child. Plus our parents would give us Jello when we were home sick. Might be a healing connection.
Perfect timing for this video! I just got some collagen yesterday for the first time. I’m 59 and disabled so your video confirms buying this was a good choice
I take 10 grams of collagen together with 60 grams whey protein powder in my daily smoothie. 🏁Pro tip, only buy the neutral taste ones, they come clean without synthetic additives.
I rely on collagen protein to keep my protein intake up. I can’t use whey as I have thyroid disease and whey isn’t recommended for that. When I break my fast I have a coffee with collagen, mct oil, a bit of heavy cream and cacao. Then a few hours later I have a healthy lunch and dinner in the evening. I’ve finally lost my perimenopause weight I had gained and fit into all my clothes again.
Just an FYI that Bowmar Nutrition whey protein is not grass fed for anyone interested. My question would then be where are they sourcing the whey and were those cows treated with steroids and growth hormones?
I have been taking collagen pretty consistently for a few years. I do however also add some EAA's to make up for that missing amino acid. I like the way I feel when I take collagen and have no plans to stop.
I’ve been taking 22 grams of Collagen Protein every day for a year and all…All…of my joint paint has disappeared. This is huge because I run and lift 7 days a week. It’s rare that I miss a day. I go hard. I’m 56 and I feel fantastic. I know Collagen has helped with my joints and probably muscle gains. Get ya some! Be consistent with it.
I'm in the same boat as you. Just turned 50, been taking collagen daily for almost two years and, not only got rid of joint pain, but also can do resistance training without getting joint soreness.
Ha! I've been mixing protein, collegen and creatine for the last few years. I had no idea what I was doing but I feel better now seein thi video. I mix that up after lifting weights 3 or 4 times per week. I also add tumric, ginger, cinnamon, salt, pepper and flackseed since I'm T2D.
Greetings from Singapore! How much collagen powder should I take since I do weightlifting & resistance training twice a week? I am also taking whey protein since I started training with a personal trainer 6 months ago. As for collagen I’ve been taking 5g daily & it has definitely kept my joints, hair and skin healthy. 😊
I'm 50 and have been taking collagen for the past week, just to help a squeaky shoulder. I've noticed a definite increase in muscle pump/density, no placebo as I know my body well. I have also started taking a zinc tab a day to help with potentially lagging test levels. Collagen with zinc is good stuff.
One cannot build muscles without building connective tissue. So adding some collagen is a good idea. Personally I avoild lean meat and prefer long boiled parts with joints or mince meat. I also supplement with collagen when eating lean meat.
We cook a lot of meat on the bone, often lamb or pork, in a base of chicken bone broth, & add in mixed bovine & marine collagen. I also use mixed marine & bovine collagen in my morning raw milk coffee. Adding in Bone broth was the heavy hitter when I first started using diet to get rid of arthritis. It has also allowed my hair to grow beyond my shoulders again, & my nails have become strong again.
Bowmar is NOT cheap and is filled with sweetners and additives. One thing to promote great health on this channel. Something different to promote "sponsored" products for monetary gain. Mostly, though, I do appreciate this channel and the health and nutritional advice you offer. Thank you.
That's awesome. I start taking collagen not too long ago just for skin. I normally blend it in with whey protein after workout because drinking collagen on its own is not that nice. Good to know there is another additional benefit for muscle there too.
Why in the world do people need a SWEET whey protein powder? or any protein powder to be sweet? This is sick. I don't need it and I don't want it sweet. With a plain powder you can add your own sweetener, like honey or maple syrup. I do not consider stevia and monk fruit powders to be healthy bc they are super concentrated non natural substances.
I use Orgain protein powder (pea), add a scoop of I, II and III collagen powder and whey powder. I'm aging backwards. LOL. At least I'm aging slower than my peers. 💪
It's way cheaper just to buy beef protein, as amino acid profile is pretty much the same. Price difference is quite substantial. Also you should be very specific which collagen type. As only bovine works for muscle and cartilage. Marine collagen is for the your nails, hair and skin
I don't know the amino profile of checked collagen but presumably would be similar to beef, so muscle and cartilage (joints). What you need to look for is the amount of leucine for your muscles and proline for joints
From what I understand collagen protein indirectly supports muscle growth by supporting healthy bones and ligament tissue. I would recommend eating most of your protein from real food sources, meat, vegetables, beans/nuts, eggs etc and supplement with whey protein mixed with collagen.
About 7 months ago I started doing 2 scoops of collagen with lactose free milk post workout because whey always makes me bloated. Plus it helped that they had a bunch of different delicious flavors of collagen on clearance at The Vitamin Shoppe, 75% off, so I stocked up. I’m still going through what I bought back in June 2023. Although once I finally run out and can’t find any more on clearance, I’ll just go back to whey due to cost.
Vital Farms unflavored(1.5lb) and chocolate flavor(2lb) collagen is on sale for $22.99 at Costco until 1/21. Same price at Sam’s right now for the unflavored(1.5lb) tub not sure until when. Those are good deals! Good time to stock up!
How true thomas! I just finished 1 year with collagen protein and plant protein with HMB. Put on 10 lbs of muscle with 2 resistance days at the gym. Amazing
Is it true one tbsp = 10 or more grams of protein? If so, how much should we take, and do we count that amount of protein as part of our daily protein needs? 🤔 Or thats besides the eggs/chicken/fish etc you already eat in a day?
The Vital packets are .35 oz(10 g) of bovine collagen peptides which is 10g of protein. Its about the same for all collagen powders. I take them for joint health but the main reason is for gut health
For those (like me) who prefer to use an organic protein powder, you should know that some brands use pea protein instead of whey and, while this doesn't contain the same level of leucine that whey does, pea protein does still have a goodly portion of that particular amino acid. Unfortunately, Bowmar doesn't (yet) produce an organic version of their product.
They use pea protein as it is cheaper, but not necessarily better for you. I'm avoiding them like a plague tbh as makes me bloated like nobody's business!
@@LucasDzon Don't blame you for that at all if you have an adverse reaction to it. It works fine for me, but that doesn't mean everyone should follow suit.
Cool, I'm 3 out of 3. I take collagen daily and whey protein along with resistance training AND just recommended collagen to my 81y old mother. Thanks Thomas
Mr. Delauer, could you please confer with Lily's chocolate to remove dextrin from their products like you did with the sucralose in Bowmar? Thank you for all the great help you are!
2 QUESTIONS - for those who eat 1/2lb beef each day, is supplementing with collagen necessary? 2nd - how does everyone "prepare" their collagen powder, cooking? Liquid? Any good recommendations besides smoothies?
“Lean Body Mass” does not necessarily equal “Skeletal Muscle”. These terms should not be used interchangeably. Doing so is misleading. Same deal with “collagen” and “collagen peptides”.
I love how much growth my body had on whey isolate while gyming. But it breaks me out so bad I had to switch to collagen, hope it doesn’t kill the gains though 😢
I've been trying to stay animal based and as such I've been using lots of beef collagen and gelatin with powdered liver added in. Whey is hard on my stomach. My recovery has been much faster than I've been expecting. 36 year old male for reference. My morning smoothie has 20 grams of plain collagen, 10 grams of plain gelatin, and 6 grams of powdered liver, 1 cup raw cows milk, 1 raw free range egg, some blueberries, strawberries, 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil, and a spoonful of honey.
My instinct for many years was combining collagen and protein, simply because of short eating windows, but it made sense to me to combine them. I had this impression they worked together, without knowing the research benefits to prove it, so it's great news now to hear the benefits. More money spent on collegan and protein means I never spend a penny on alcohol or junk take outs. I wish they made more collagen drinks, protein, and bone broths at bars and restaurants, because I think socially it's benefits can be made more fun, in the same way you used to go out with friends for drinks, now imagine a trendy bar with a bone broth chill out lounge. Be wonderful. 🎉😊
I can’t do whey so I normally take vegan protein powder. But recently I incorporated collagen powder and I actually noticed gains, I am 2 years into my resistance training
Was just watching an older video where he states how bad Whey Concentrate is. Looking at the ingredients of the Bowmar sponsor, it states it as the first ingredient, meaning there's at least as much of it as the Isolate (listed second). What's up with that?
That Bowmar Nutrition whey protein powder you promote has allulose. I don't like the taste of allulose and it can cause diarrhea, which every health powder I've ever tried has done. It has a bunch of gums in it, too. Who wants that?
You doing alright Tom? I don’t want to see you getting worn down. I take those EPA GEMS, & Aloe Vera Gel, I think it helps keep me young. I’ve been taking Collagen Protein & I cut out the sugar. I’ve had to overhaul the digestive tract. Something went seriously haywire & I had to push everyone out to set things straight, clean systems. There’s just too much bs out there & too many opinions with bs influencing situations wrongly losing sight of the bigger picture sometimes. Kinda felt like the shortest straw, but I keep my guard up. I beware chit chat at the supplement store; don’t want to be mean or rude; my kindness gets the best of me. I say no more, except I’m re-adding you. Don’t take offense, but I’m treating everyone with caution. I’ve always liked you, even bought your book. The Turkish Eggs are bomb. I can only take so much of that red chili though. I like day to day consistent simplicity due to environment. Reliable static diet keeps my eyes clear on fluctuations going on with everyone’s chaos. I posted one of my fitness pics from a while back. Wish I could’ve shared it with you. You helped me carve it out. It’s not my best which 3yrs prior & plus 10-15lbs, but it’s quite respectable. Let me know if you want to see something you helped carve the fat off of? I’ve recently taken a dive due to an injury. It’s still here because my environment is stopping me. I’ll get through sooner or later. You take care. I don’t want to see you getting beaten down & pushed aside. I see your entire concept has been duplicated & overrun with infomercials by someone who I don’t believe possess the insight you do. I stop there, but I have eyes.
Generally a good discussion but would be better if she didn't interrupt and try to hijack every part of the discussion. She can have her polyunsaturated fats - I avoid them for multiple reasons.
mTORC is stimulated by the resistance training. You don't need the leucine to stimulate growth after resistance training. While collegen won't stimulate hypertrophy by itself, it does contain all of the AAs needed to build muscle.
Thomas, I'm perplexed as to why neither you nor Dr Berg nor anyone is reviewing and commenting about the scientific effectiveness of taking amino acid tablets as an alternative to whey protein. I have been taking a product called Huma Pro, formerly was taking Perfect Amino but Huma Pro has support nutrients that my body needs to consume the amino acids when I'm fasting. Anyway, five of these pills is effectively the equivalent of something like 25g of whey protein, all for like five calories. So I take 10 of these pills in the morning and then five more in the early afternoon, and five more in the evening. How is it that no one is talking about this? I mean I found it from an ad, but it seems like an obvious panacea. Is someone lying or is everyone just ignoring the obvious miracle science of taking amino acids? This makes sense to me to bypass the ingestion of protein that gets converted to amino acids, just go straight to the amino acids, let your body convert that to protein without the hassle of converting protein to amino acids first. Maybe you did already review this idea with a scientific study and I missed it.
I am a nutritionist and take EAAs for the last 20 years that I go to the gym. No, amino acids can't replace the protein intake (for gaining muscle) for the reason you just said yourself. Amino acids have no calories, so you CAN'T gain weight by forming muscle in your body, as the whey protein will do. EAAs work perfectly for the recovery after the gym, the pain and the soreness. Also work fantastic for the synthesis of almost all hormones and neurotransmitters etc. ..
How about creatine monohydrate with multi collagen complex types 1 - 3, 5, & 10? Im about to give it a whirl today, once i started collagen last month, my life long joint pain has finally started a healing phase, its not fully gone yet. Im 27, i could use more sun, puerto rican in new england, fun xD
This is what I take every day with my coffee in the morning for the last year. Apart form the improvement in strength and looks (obviously creatine is swelling the muscles) I have no joint pain, which I had all my life...Nice one !
May I ask why? I reiterate the title right at the beginning of the video and explain everything right on the front end. I’m not devaluing your opinion as I take feedback constructively. However we thought this was an accurate title. I’d be open to suggestions if you have any.
@@ThomasDeLauerOfficial imo the title and video gives the impression that if I lift heavy and I’m trying to maximize muscle growth and I supplement with only one protein powder and I can’t drink whey I should supplement with collagen only for best results. You know that’s not true, there are protein powders with WAY better amino acid profiles than collagen. IMO the better way to present this would be “if you can’t supplement with whey, you should include this protein in your routine” or something like that.
Perhaps you didn’t watch the entire video as I explain how it can enhance whey etc. That being said I adjusted the title and maybe it makes more sense. Thanks for the valuable feedback my dude
@@ThomasDeLauerOfficial I did watch the video, that’s why I said the title was misleading because the video wasn’t totally consistent with the title. With that said, great info, and honestly I understand making the title more attention grabbing especially if it’s within reason which I think your original title probably was. Great to see you reach out personally and actually communicate with your audience. Thanks for all the info over the years and sorry if my comment was a little harsh, I was hangry!
