The main trouble with vegan cheeses are that they are really horrible to eat, I've tried a few and will never eat them again.
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth 5 месяцев назад
Yea it's hard to find good vegan cheeses. There are much better recipes online using cashews or other nuts and nutritional yeast that taste way better and don't have added phos and high amounts of sodium!

Let's don't forget that almond milk is very high in oxalates. If you consume almond milk you should also take Calcium Citrate.

I eat Fage plain Greek yogurt. It has good pot./ phos. numbers compared to other Greek yogurts (235 pot,, 130 phos. per 6 oz). I'll add a drink mix to it (true lemon) and some blueberries. Sometimes I'll also mix it with coconut yogurt to lessen the load.
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth 5 месяцев назад
Glad you're getting plain and adding your own fruit! Mixing with coconut yogurt can definitely lower the overall protein content of the Greek yogurt.

Hi. I'm hoping you can answer a question for me. I 've been using Allulose for a while. As I understand it, Allulose is a fermented form of sugar that does not get metabolized and has no affect on blood sugar. Since it ends up in urine, do you know if Allulose damages kidney tissues similarly to the way regular sugar damages kidney tissue? Thank you, I appreciate the info you share on this channel.❤

Can you address Kefir in your next podcast. Kefir (Lifeway brand) made from nonfat milk has lots of good gut bacteria. It is not the same as milk. If you drink only 1/4 cup once a day, would that avoid the inflammation.
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth 5 месяцев назад
Kefir is kind of an in between milk and yogurt. Since it is fermented it contains benefits from the probiotics. However, many varieties are sweetened and high in added sugar. So just like yogurt, you would want to make sure you choose a plain, unsweetened variety!

What about 1/2 cup organic whole fat milk in stage 3b for healthy cereal(magic spoon)everyday? Another half cup plain unsweetened kefir(strickly for the probiotics) for 64oz vitamix smoothies(about 8 cups)? 3b Father dislikes plant based milks-almond,soy,rice,cashew, macadamia, oat,

1. My Milk container lable doesn't list Phosphorus on the Ingredients. Is that correct? 2. From what CKD Stage is all Milk a No No? Thanks Pretoria, South Africa
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth 5 месяцев назад
Cow's milk contains phosphorus naturally so it does not have to be listed on the ingredient list. There is ~205 mg phosphorus in 1 cup of milk. Plant milks are much lower in natural phosphorus, but you want to check the ingredient list to make sure no phosphorus has been added. If phosphorus has been added, it would be in the ingredient list (since it is an additive).

If a plant-based diet is healthier for humans, then why can we not get an essential vitamin like B12 from plants, and why are some nutrients more bioavailable from animal sources?
@germank7924
@germank7924 5 месяцев назад
one theory for B12 is that we were getting our B12 from "contaminated" plants, bacteria, fungi etc. But it's also possible we never said no to opportunistic protein sources like eggs insects etc. Note that "plant based" does not mean vegan, if you only eat meat for B12 then you can stay plant based, like the Mediterranean people
@aribaariba8609
@aribaariba8609 5 месяцев назад
Plant based diet means 80 - 90 % of food in your plate is plant based, you can get your protein and b12 from fish/seafood in case of renal diet.
@ShazWag
@ShazWag 5 месяцев назад
I'm not sure what you mean by "if you only eat meat for B12 then you can stay plant based, like the Mediterranean people". First, how can you stay plant based if you eat meat? Second, what do you mean by "the Mediterranean people"? There are many countries in the Mediterranean, each of which eats a different diet @@germank7924

"renal diet"??@@aribaariba8609
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth 5 месяцев назад
It is generally recommended for anyone following plant based, vegan or vegetarian diets to supplement with B12. But a lot of omnivores need to supplement with B12 as well. Especially older adults as B12 absorption changes.

So is plain Greek yogurt ok or not for CKD?
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth 5 месяцев назад
Plain, unsweetened Greek yogurt can definitely fit into a CKD diet. Since it is higher in protein compared to regular yogurt, you would want to make sure that the portion consumed meets individual needs. And that you get plenty of fruit with it to lower the PRAL (potential renal acid load) of the meal/snack you are consuming.

How about cheese with per slice saturated fat 4g sodium 45mg, protein 6g and don't see phosphorous listed at all? 3 slices once a week at most. In a sandwich of Ezekiel bread. 3 slices equal 12g of saturated fat, 135 mg sodium, and 18 g protein.
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth 5 месяцев назад
We generally wouldn't recommend consuming 3 slices of cheese at one sitting. That would be very high PRAL (potential renal acid load). If consuming as part of a sandwich (Ezekiel bread is great), one slice and getting lots of veggies on the sandwich is a better option.
@ambizytl

Can taking a vit b complex cause more kidney problems, im at stage 3a and im trying to stop burning legs
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth 5 месяцев назад
Definitely talk with your healthcare team if you are having burning legs...B complexes in general are NOT contraindicated in people with CKD. Many should supplement with a b complex. But you want to make sure there are not high amounts of other vitamins like vitamin C or calcium that can sometimes be added to b complex vitamins.

What about all the oxalates and all the nuts and then you're making more damage to your kidneys
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth 5 месяцев назад
Definitely check out our episodes on oxalates! There are also lower oxalate nut options for people with hyperoxaluria that may need to limit oxalate intake. For example, almond milk is way higher in oxalates than macadamia, coconut, oat, or flax milk.

Does this include goat milk products?
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth 5 месяцев назад
Studies haven't looked at goat's milk separate from cow's milk. Some things to consider with goat's milk is that it is higher potassium and phosphorus than cow's milk. Goat's milk cheese is positive/higher PRAL just like cheese from cow's milk.
