I'm Lithuanian and living in Denmark for 7 years by now. I will never ever gonna leave this country, it gave me way more than my homeland and I just appreciate everything here. Taxes are high, but when something happens you can feel that you pay those not for nothing. I had to call an ambulance as I was kinda having hear attack, Ambulance came in less than 5 minutes ! And since then, they marked me as high alert person, so next time I will call there will be no questions who I am and what's happening. Never ever seen this in any other country done for a simple immigrant citizen. Damn I love Denmark.

I can totally agree with you. I am also a Lithuanian living in Denmark for 3 years and I am very happy to live here. I was so surprised that foreign students are able to live a quality life with a stable financial income with work only 12 hours a week. Being a student and having financial independence is truly an amazing feeling as I am able to invest more in personal development.

Having traveled around the world, I have always been asked about the happiness thing: Are you just happy all the time? No of course not. And I often meet forighners who seem dissappointed when they get here, becasue honestly, Denmark can be pretty boring, but the flipside to that is safe and stable. I think the word content is better than happy, most people here achive a pretty decent life with most of the things they want and need, no we are not all millionairs with luxury cars and what not, but pretty much all are doing pretty great. Nearly nobody really fails, and if you do, we have probably the best safety net. I think you said it well in the introduction, our lifestyle is human oriented. I think the quality of a country is best measured by the quality of life of the population, the entire population! Not just the rich. We work real hard to help each other, and I gladly pay the highest taxes in the world, because I know how much it benefits my fellow country men, as it has benefitted me. I know our heavy taxation is the reason for all this comfortable lifestyle, and I would much rather pay more taxes for more welfare than less taxes and recieve less welware. I think it all boils down to feeling secure and able to achive things we want, there are probably countries out there where it is easier to become a millionaire and more kind to those who are, but I think you'll have a hard time finding a place where it is easier to become middle class and more friendly to the average citizen. Not only are our universities free, but you get paid a hefty sum going there: Getting my degree I get paid 6500 dkk, which is 950 dollars or 870 euros, a month that is. I work a nonskilled job as a substitute teacher in my spare time, and I get 33 dollars an hour, and that is a job I got with nothing but my high school diploma. This ensures that studying, bettering yourself, and making yourself more suitiable to fulfill your own dreams and play an important part in society is not a financial problem. I even got 410 dollars a month the last year of high school, as I had turned 18. In the same way if you find yourself to be unemployed, you'll recieve money from the government to ensure that you can continuesly take care of yourself and your familiy. Americans talk a lot about freedom, and to me this is exactly freedom. Freedom not to worry about poverty, the freedom to know that my children can become literally anything they want and have the skills to no matter my bank account. And having to worry about the hospital bill when you injure yourself or get sick to, me that is the exact opposite of freedom. It sounds so insane to me that people have debt because they got sick in a developed country. I really cannot imagine living in a country, where I would be okay with my neighbourg having to pay thoudsands of dollars because he got sick. When I travel to other devoloped countries, I am always shocked by the number of homeless people, walking through the streets in Germany, the UK, the US etc. there are homeless people all over compared to here, and being okay with that feels so distant to me. And don't get me started on guns. No Denmark is by no means perfect, we got plenty of flaws, it is not a paradise. But I cannot think of a country generally doing better that we do. Being Danish is the luckiest thing in the world, and seeing videos like this really makes me think about how insanely lucky I am. I love this place so incredibly much

Frederick...you forget one thing. Denmark has only 6 million people. I notice you Europeans love to draw parallel with America. That is a nation of 350 million. Denmark will not be Denmark if it had a population in excess of 50 million people. The kind of welfare practice in Denmark is only possible in countries with small populations. Always remember that. It's easier to manage small countries.

Curiously, Sweden, Iceland, and Norway - all three of which have similar progressive taxation in comparison do Denmark - rank pretty high in concentration of billionaires by population. I think what makes the Nordic countries stand out as a great place to live, is the cultural insistancy of equality and egalitarianism. There is a concept called "The Law of Jante" in nordic countries that state that you are no better than the person next to you. It teaches humility. solidarity and a spirit of cooperation. While often seen as demeaning and holding the individual back, this mindset exactly teaches us to be conscious of the state of the society we live in, rather than focus on personal achievement.

@@b.v.nielsen8714 The Law of Jante as described in Sandemose's book (he is danish-norwegian btw) is not a positive thing at all. It is meant to instill social control and discourage personal achievement. That being said, a lot of people do find positives in the mindset and sees it not as a form of social control but a thing that creates togetherness and solidarity among people. The very egalitarian societies of the Nordic countries are a testament to this mindset of equality and solidarity where one isn't any more important than anyone else in the crowd. It is the anti-thesis to American exceptionalism and desire to feel better, richer, more deserving of something etc than any of your fellow citizens.

I think my own take on being danish is "the good type of boredom"... If there's one thing i can say about living here, it that not much really happens! We get no really extreme weather, we have no geological instability, no real problems with citizen unrest, and the political scene is diverse, but working towards a common goal for the most part, regardless of who is in power. We also stay good friends with every neighbor we have, with both Germany, Sweden and Norway especially being tight with us, and we have the added security of being both members of the EU and NATO, so we are in a rather safe place in regards to both security and economy... And honestly, since the German occupation ended in 1945, nothing of real note happened here, and it has just been a generation of nothing bad happening... So if your goal is to just live your life in peace without really worrying about anything, i feel confident in saying we have one of the best places in the world... It's flat, safe and boring, just the way i like it!

THE reason Denmark is one of the best countries to live in, is our welfare system. Technically, yes, we are a monarchy, but that is like saying China and North Korea are democracies (which they technically are on paper). The monarch does not have any power, it is just a romanticized institution, so even though it might say on the Denmark Wikipedia we have a monarch, it is in reality entirely wrong. Back to our welfare system. As in the rest of Scandinavia, we do not have economic worries. Yes, we pay high taxes, but if sh*t hits the fan and you get sick, or your workplace gets shut down, we have a welfare check you can actually live on, our healthcare system is free, so no matter what happens, you will never end up in the street due to medical bills - because there are none, the state just provides you with the appropriate care. We call this the "security net" - like the net at the bottom of the circus when the acrobats are performing. You might fall, but you will never die. It is kind of genius, because no matter what hand life dealt you, you actually get a real chance of social mobility, rehabilitation, or whatever help you might need. And not only are all our education free (college, university, everything!) we get what equates to $1000 a month for studying, so we don't have to waste time working, but can focus on our studies and still pay our bills. We simply do not have to worry. That is why we are happy.

Danmarks emphasis on securing a decent life for everyone goes way back in the history of the Danes. E.g. this was put into words in the song “Way higher mountains” from 1820 by the Danish national poet/icon Grundtvig, who writes in the final verse: “…and then we have in richness made it far, when few people have too much, but even fewer have too little”

People are getting discharged way too early because the psychiatric department doesn't have enough space for all the patients. @EusebiusAT 2 года назад
I agree that our more liberal consumption of cigarettes and alcohol are a big reason for the lower life expectancy, but I'm not so sure about the anti-depressants thing. I have heard some different interpretations of stats like this. For example, women with more left-wing politics are statistically more likely to have diagnosed mental illnesses, but this is likely due to this group having less stigma around mental health and seeking therapy. In the same vein, I've heard arguments that the reason some very happy and developed countries consume so many anti-depressants, is due to us having easier access to mental healthcare and/or less stigma around taking stress/sick leave from work and seeking therapy. I don't know one way or the other, if our consumption of anti-depressants is a good sign or not, but I don't think it's as clear cut as many make it out to be.

I'm from Denmark and I'm having a great time here, but in my opinion opinion you failed to mention 2 bad things about this country. 1: We have one of the highest percentages of people that need medicine for mental health issues, and in general there are a lot of issues with mental health here. I have to get checked for ADD, I called the psychiatrist with the shortest waiting time in my city back in September and I got an appointment in March 2023... 2: Even though we have very few refugees in this country we still only let very few in, even though there is space and jobs. Recently the government joined a British plan to send refugees to Rwanda which I find to be a terrible thing to do. It's extremely hard to become a danish citizen. Number 2 is more controversial especially here in Denmark, so to clarify once again, this is strictly my opinion that these points aren't positive.
@eidodk
@eidodk 2 года назад
Why would you choose a psych with a waiting time of more than 6 months anyway ? It's not like you need 10 sessions. Make it an excursion to another city. Also - if you really need/want the diagnosis, either pay for it, or get a referral through a hospital.. that way you will be seen within 30 days, or you can choose a private practice due to the treatment guarantee. Also - you can choose psychologist with almost zero waiting time. Ofcourse you'll have to pay for the session, but hey - if the diagnosis is important to you, it's a small fee for the diagnosis that can help you for the rest of your life.

Looking at some graphical statistic we do have one of the highest percentage usage of despression medicine. However, you need to look behind the numbers to understand why. And one of the culprits, is that we report usage as well of type of medicine. So if I told you, that vitamins D is listed as an antidepressant would that surprise you? The lack of sunny weather during the fall and winter time makes people depressed because the sun provide a good deal of vitamins D and we get very little of it during those periods. So a great deal of the "medicine" listed as antidepressant medicine is harmless vitamins D. So the numbers "lie" a bit in that regard. Another factor, is that failure hits extra hard here. In a country that gives you every reason and chance to succeed, it is a hard blow to not achieve that. Some never gets over it (also one of the reasons why we ranked high in suicide numbers a decade ago, altho that has improved for the better a great deal)

All of the nordics are definetly on the top 10, but it really depends what you're looking for. Denmark and Norway are a bit wealthier than Finland and Sweden for example, but Sweden is doing a bit better on gender equality than Denmark. It's also worth considering that differences in culture are more pronounced when looking at the top of countries. It isn't the case that Denmarks lower life expectancy is a feature of a bad healthcare system or a dangerous environment, for example, but likely has more to do with our higher alcohol consumption, compared to the other Nordics. So for any individual, I think more or less all the Nordics will accommodate you and your lifestyle equally well, but there are some different preferences one can have in terms of culture, weather, nature and stuff like that.

Hi from Denmark, the reason we don't have the highest life expectancy is that we concern ourselves more with leading happy and enjoyable lives, rather than living forever. We've realized that more years isn't automatically better, and by far the most octogenarians, end up in care in a way that isn't very enjoyable due to, well old age. The body simply ends up being less fun to be alive in at some point, and that point happens before the life expectancy age for most people, which in turn means very old people in Denmark, are less happy than the rest. It is sometimes better to die with dignity. We simply don't want longer lives than we already expect, since we realized those extra years, will not be very good years.

a little about it being expensive to live in Denmark, you compare with our wages, and purchasing power yes then Denmark is ACTUALLY not that expensive for us Danes. yes house prices are high in the big cities and cars have a nice big taxation. but for us with middle incomes yes then we rarely pay more than max 40% in income tax. and if we look at what has been paid by this tax, yes, then it is an actually not so crazy investment, because ordinary people in Denmark wealthy benefit from a society where there is a high level of security. we actually have no gated communities in Denmark. as it is not necessary. I think our success stems from the fact that we are a small country ,. and there is so much room for more, thank you in my Denmark. but try and look at the Denmark that is outside the big cities. you will be shocked because here you have the whole "Denmark package" and with very low house prices. my house costs for example only about 120,000 € and we have about an hour to the nearest big city, in Denmark you have the whole Danish package with high wages great security, and the welfare state there is but low house prices so you pay a fraction of rent. and live Because Denmark is as small as Denmark is a maximum of one hour away from a big city. and the funny thing is that we actually have plenty of room for newcomers from abroad as well. good jobs that are hard to get occupied and very good danich style houses either for cheap rent or sale.
