I've lived in Flint for 12 years. I've never had anybody break into my house that I didn't know personally. It's all about who you associate yourself around.
Truth. I lived most of my life in, and around, Flint and have found that everyone deserves respect no matter their socioeconomic status. Kindness breeds kindness and if you mind your own business and be polite you'll never have an issue.
Don't forget to add when President Clinton signed an after Free trade agreement in the 90s we still have 77,000 GM jobs after we sign that they went to Canada and Mexico we only have 7,000 GM jobs
I moved from Miami to Flint to help the housing build back up and help the community. They have already been putting funding back into infrastructure so I can’t be the only one that sees potential. I don’t see why it can’t come back and bring new opportunities to America 🗽

Just for perspective about the schools-Southwestern may be technically a magnet school in name, but it's the defacto high school after the reconciliation of the other high schools in the city into one building. You could maybe argue it was magnet when I went there in the early-mid 2000s, but in practice other highschools like Northern/Central had as many specialized courses (not to mention the county Skill Center that many of us went to for more career specific courses) and students would be bussed between these schools during the day as necessary.
Flint will never change unless the people start changing themselves. I worked in a Flint school for about 5yrs and the parents of these kids are absolutely terrible and shameful. Obviously there are good people in Flint but there are A LOT of shitty parents that aren't paying attention to their kids. You could dress the city up as nice as you'd like but until the north side of Flint is cleaned up it will always be like this.
I appreciate your spread of information. I must say most places anywhere have bad areas. You see the abandonment, but many people in Flint work hard for what they have and there are successful areas. We need people to speak up about that too! Shed light on that too.
BORN IN FLINT FLINT GENERAL HOSPITAL 1946 WENT BACK TO FAMILY HOMESTEAD IN KENTUCKY. MOVE AS SOON AS YOU CAN. FLINT HAS BEEN RUN BY THE UAW/DEMOCRATS FOR 90 YEARS. MOVE
Not sure if crime is down or if it is really hard to report the crime. People give up trying to report their crime here due to the lack of police force and personnel to take the report. 😭😭
Crime isn't down. I work security in Flint there's gunshots almost every single day in the surrounding neighborhood, nobody bats an eye. It's normal for people around here.
@@EtraoI just read your comment. Didn't they have regular patrol in areas throughout the city. I met some people from the area and they spoke highly of the city. Is it still that bad?
Flint is a dead company town. You only need a fraction number of jobs to run a auto plant as you did in the 1960s. Even if the auto manufacturing jobs come back the city will never be in it's glory days again. Why save flint? For the nostalgia of retiring workers who plan on moving out of the state? Millennials & Gen Z should focus on communities where if one company goes under it doesn't turn it into a former rust belt manufacturing town.
I was born in Flint in 1976. I went to Flint Northwestern High School. I have recently moved and I don’t see it getting any better. I really am amazed at how it has changed over the years. Raising a family there is not good. My advice is that if you can leave to do so. I recommend because it would give a brighter future for the up coming young. But this is just my opinion. There are no elementary, junior high or high schools left. I don’t know where the city is headed but I definitely now where it came from.
Chris, thank you so much for posting these videos. I was born in Flint in 1957; my father had a house on Jennings Road halfway between Pierson Road and Pasadena. I graduated from Hamady High School in 1975, and I worked at the Chevrolet Flint Engine Plant until 1979 when I was laid off. I moved to California in early 1980, but, Flint has always held a special place in my heart, it is so sad to see what has become of this town. The last time that I was there was the fall of 1984. I would love to see more videos of the area where my fathers house was, Jennings between Pierson and Pasadena, and a drive by Hamady High School. I looked online and as far as I know the High School is still open. I have a High School buddy who now lives in Northern Michigan, but, every now and then he still goes to Flint, he tells me how a lot of the stores/restaurants in our area are long gone. Again, thanks for the videos, and please do consider making a video of my old neighborhood...
@@Henry_Jones career wise, yes, it has been very good to me, but, I still miss all of the green landscape and the lakes in Michigan. When I first moved here I brought my boat with me, but, I sold it shortly after arriving because there are no decent lakes within driving distance from where I live, and the ones that are around the people were just nuts on the water. And now, if you have been following what is going on politically here in California, it's time to leave.
@@Henry_Jones Very monotonous; 12 hours a day doing the same thing over and over. But, I would swap jobs every chance that I could just to do something different.
Hamady High is still there. It is mostly African-American in make up now. Their football team is currently making a deep run in the state high school football playoffs in their division. The stretch of Jennings between Pierson and Pasadena isn't as bad as much of Flint City as most houses are still standing but there are some vacant lots and businesses like "Bob's Garage". Clio Road and Pierson Rd aren't like they used to be with high crime and gang activity.
I grew up in flint and I pray e very day that we get it together. I caught multiple felonies in flint overdosed over a handful of times, I had to escape it or I was going to die in it. Lost so many ppl in flint to murders and overdoses it is so sad. One day I hope to see flint in videos for good instead of videos like this. Pray for my city yall
The pipes in Flint can't be fixed because car dependent cities rely on growth in order to fund infrastructure maintenance, and Flint continues to shrink, decreasing the taxpayer base year after year. People moving away after the water crisis obviously continued the feedback loop. There is a lot of heart in this community though and it can only get better from here. I hope they find a way to sustainably rebuild this area.
Job loss in the auto industry was in part due to the US Congress. Congress wanted to divest the USA of the Teamsters union, in doing so, other unions were also effected. Couple this with economic downturn and improvements in technology caused the quick erosion. NAFTA was the final nail in the job coffin ⚰️.
GM had 60% of the market it now has 20%. The 1998 strike at the Flint Metal Fab was devastating. Every job in Flint depended on GM. Once the GM retirees with their health care benefits die off might as well plow the city under.
At one point in time everyone knew everyone in Clarkston michigan, then a whole crap load of people move to Clarkston there was a massive amount of Land development, suddenly there was no commonality amongst the people of clarkston. It turned into a bunch of unfamiliar faces. That's one thing Flint has that I missed so much for so long, at least where I am in Flint, everyone pretty much knows everyone. When we first moved here we had neighbors introducing themselves right away, made all kinds of good friends. Anything can happen anywhere! There was all kinds of dirt happening in Clarkston all the time, however it would get cleaned up/swept under the rug before they'd allow the news to catch wind of it or allow it to be put in the news paper. Don't be misled by exaggerated statistics and the fake news! Just go watch the movie American beauty with Kevin Spacey lol! It's a great example of middle class suburbia 😂😂😂😂😂😂. They paint such a pretty picture on the outside, but boy oh boy! If anyone ever knew what was going on behind closed doors! Lol! I've noticed most people in Flint are real! In those little Richie Rich towns, there is a ton of fake ass phony people. I think I'd rather be murdered by a crazed stranger in FLINT , then have a bunch of phony/ fake ass friends in a uppity rich town. 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Some residents paint the inside of their windows black and then hang black sheets over the windows. Then they will only have 1 tiny lamp on the floor in each room. This is so no one can see inside and shoot them.
Great work on the videos Chris! I was born in Flint 1961 and me and a lot of my family worked for GM at one time or another . My Dad @ Fisher body Ternstedt 42yrs..Keep the vids coming!
Hey Chris, love your videos. As a Michigan native, I'm taking personal responsibility to learn more about the history of our state so I may have context of why the way things are now. Do you know of any resources of learning more about Flint's racial segregation and racism? I would love to learn more about it in your videos but I can understand why you don't go too deep on the subject very often.
i was an eastsider for 32 years. i miss the good ole days. such a shame to see how it is now. i was kinda crushed when Angeloes closed up. i was there almost daily .
I miss the smell of Angelo's. I don't know how many times I had no intentions of getting any food from there but as soon as I ride by and that smell hits my nose, it was over😅
Grew up outside Detroit in the 50s my family coming from Tenn to there in the 30s for better job chances. I always sensed a hostility of native ganders to the mass influx of white and black southeners coming for jobs and changing what Michigan had been. Ethnic slurs were common then and I was a hillbilly, the Poles in Hamtramck polacks, and Italians/ other mediterranean the dagos/wops. There were two major school systems there, public and parochial, and while the public schools had the rare catholic, for sure the parochial had zero southern transplants. Recall when both Flint and Detroit rode high. And glad I made it out when I did.
Raised in Flint since I was 5, I'm 19 now. Lived in Mount Morris Township off of Dort and Coldwater my whole life. Parents just moved to the Southside recently but overall, I'm hoping to move on away from Flint in the future.
I live in flint and literally watched 2 people OD across the street from me AT A CHURCH. Just today. Called 911 all day long and it took them 5 hours to show up…
I lived in flint majority of my life, I hate saying bad things about my hometown, but it really has nothing good to offer, and I have no plans of ever going back.
Already following is like. It’s crazy how abandoned flint is. There was one night someone went around Waterloo and set 4 unoccupied homes on fire and an abandoned factory. The site supervisor came in that morning I was like someone is going around acting like this is Detroit she’s like I’ve noticed.
Born and raised in Flint Every school I ever attended was closed. I left in 2015 and to see it run down that much more is heartbreaking. I lost more friends than I care to count in that city. I vowed not to return until I could come back and rebuild. Funny they wiped the memory away of Jerusalem in my eyes!!! Shalawam
I was born and raised there... what a HORRIFIC town... best part of Flint was the sign that says LEAVING GENESSEE COUNTY... was never anything there and no good memories!
Pump the brakes a bit eh. Flint doesn't stink like e st Louis or Chicago. Next in line everywhere you go. Your time is yours here. Not sitting in traffic or in line for hours. Ok MLK might not look exactly like rodeo drive...yet. think positive. JK. Definitely not the best but definitely not the worst imo. One can catch perch & walleye here, how bad can it be? (Rhetorical)
I grew up in flint and back n forth between there and port Huron for most my childhood, wanna move back there bc I honestly loved living there, was on east side off dort hwy around that area and a little off Pierson and Clio rd (that area was rlly sketch) probably of if I moved back would be just west of downtown bc that’s a very nice area still
Flint Michigan is the first cousin of Gary Indiana and Camden nj is its uncle , from Either the Father’s side or the mother s side of the family how sad but true😮
Retired right outside Flint after being in and out of area with GM. Flint on rebound over last ten years. I really like the area and not from Michigan originally.
Native Flintstoner here. I was born and raised in Flint. Graduated from Kersley in ‘91. I hung on until 2000, Then I had to go. I couldn’t raise my family or send my kids to public school anymore. It’s such a shame and so sad to see what has befallen a once great place. It was a wonderful place to grow up in the ‘80s. I blame a lot on the UAW constantly demanding more every year. Big ups homie!
I don’t disagree, I don’t debate politics and such anyway as I don’t know that much, besides respect others is important. I’d just add that it’s difficult to say one thing is at fault, UAW, is a factor but I see the federal government as a large contributor. GM is probably given a lot more credit for Flints conditions than they actually earned, it is a corporate entity. It is a profit driven company and you see the upper middle management out of jobs as well. also the 80’s being so infamous for the self centered attitude. Society is a product of the people and their values. There weren’t many values I could see but I always believed Flint was just about 30 years or so ahead of the rest of the country.
I lived there for 40+ years and the only reason Flint isn't a complete wasteland is because of the UAW. I encourage all to watch "Roger and Me" to get the full context of the harm GM, and its subsidiaries, did to Genesee county both economically and environmentally. Once GM filed bankruptcy in 2008 it released them from $500 million of environmental cleanup liabiltiy.
Chris, I grew up there in the 1960’s. I was wondering if you could drive down Westmoreland. Behind the north Flint plaza. Also Powers high school on Carpenter road. It’s been 30 years since I’ve been there to visit. Its sad to see the city destroyed. Thank you
Born and raised on the south side of Flint. Moved away when I got married in 1989. Had many friends who went to school at those closed schools. So sad to see this once great city reduced to this.
Makes me grateful to live in the town I live in. I live in a great small suburb named Lombard Illinois. I hope Chris will stop by us. We are your safe, average and quiet suburb, we only have 45,000 residents. We have great schools, a nice downtown, a safe county, and plenty to do in and around Lombard, we even still have our own mall.
@@ChrisHarden 👍.I love this traveling channel,I’ve been subscribed for 2 years now and I’m liking the Michigan content. Flint just seems like a depressing area tho.
@@ChrisHarden Ya . . . I watch a lot of ur vids and a couple vid collections of the best town in eh USA, like 10 in a row, would be great. Probably wouldn't get a lot of views though would it, lol.
Hi I used to live in near by Elmhurst. I am really fond of that area, Yorktown mall was my favorite spot for grabbing a quick bite when I was still single.
Chris, one of these videos on Pontiac would be interesting, I lived there for a couple years in mid-late 90s, story would likely be very similar to Flints.
One of my first videos was on Pontiac. I made it nearly 3 years ago. I’ve learned how to make better videos since then, but here it is ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PNKuksu2Ju4.html
I love it here in flint! Never met so many great people in my life. I grew up in Clarkston Michigan from 1984 to 08, in my opinion there's more people to worry about in Clarkston then there is in Flint lol! You can read all the statistics you want, If you don't live here, you'll never know the actual truth about flint and the people living here.
My personal theory, those arson's we performed by laid off firefighters. The buildings targeted were not in places that would cause widespread fires. It was a retaliation hit for being laid off.
I live in Flint been struggling still struggling to be honest if your low income it's affordable here but you may still struggle but it's not bad here other then the water is crap and they charge to much for it water should be free if you ask me all things considered
A city in the running for worst would be Niagara Falls NY. Another city that lost over half its population. Toxic chemicals, corruption, mafia and urban blight galore. I think you would find it fascinating.
Flint started a rapid decline in the 70s. As a boy visiting my grandparents on Roosevelt in the 60s, I never liked Flint. Crime was high, and the auto industry started leaving. The water was always bad, even in 1962. My grandparents had a constant brown ring around the edges of the sink, tub and toilet. The water smelled of sulfur.
So sad to see Flint now. I loved it there. Some great people and musicians. Conto's was a blast back in the 80's and the Machine Shop is one of the coolest venues in the country.
I was born and raised in Flint. I left my hometown in 1988 And then returned in 2020 I don't recognize any more. Buick City is gone, Downtown Chevrolet is gone, the Genessee Tower is gone, and Part of the Fisher Body plant is gone. My old high school Flint Central Close. I remember in High School. My instructor asked me do I have an interest outside of Flint. I said yes television broadcaster who told me to go there was no future here in Flint.
To be fair, it's the best city to get your weed from. They always have the lowest prices. Here in walled lake where I live, everyones been price fixing. You can't get anything better than 25 an eighth, and they won't sell in ounces... They want you paying that unit price all the way up. Flint tho, I got two ounces of red velvet kush for 90 bucks, and that shit was incredible. The most aromatic bud I've had in a while, and our baseline weed blows any Cali shit I've ever had out of the water, it's not even comparable. Every time someone says they have Cali weed, I end up disappointed. Michigan weed is better. Period. Place is a total shit hole tho. But the vibes I get from going down there really give me inspiration when I'm playing some blues after I smoke said ganj. Like if Cincinnati and The DC wasteland from fallout 3 had a baby, it would be Flint. Even down to the water issues lol
