Is Fridge Ruined?

This customer called with a problem we don’t see very often. Her Dometic refrigerator is TOO cold. It is freezing everything in the fridge. Is the fridge ruined or can I fix it?

I used to have cooling issues with my 1972 dometic especially on propane then I replaced the regulator and cleaned everything up. Then I was a happy camper I had ice crystals in my beers!

In the early 2000 years, Propane refrigerators were blowing up left and right They tried to cheap part . Had one like ammonia in a 2002 trailer after about three years. I were catching fire, going down the road exploding with people inside very dangerous That’s one of the reasons why they are switching to 12 V compressor . We bought a brand new forest river 30 foot trailer and 2022. We love the compressor fridge. It gets cold in 2 1/2 to 3 hours Most of the manufactures are going to 12 V Compressor.

They are not moving towards 12 volt fridges because they are concerned about your safety. 12 volt fridges are much cheaper, but they don't pass that savings to you.

The older Dometic "Classics" were good units. I never had to worry about mine being cold enough like the No-cold I have now (its days are numbered).

Worked camper the other day that is 42 years old and all the appliances looked original and they all worked. AC blew 22 degree differential.

Thanks for this heads up on the thermistor. I always mess with mine based on the outside temp. But I’ve never put a meter on it, I may do that now that I see how you test it. Another great video. Thank you Kenny.

Yeah, my clippy thingy always kept falling down due to the rolling earthquake. I put some duct tape on the fin to keep it in place and marked it to see if it falls again. Never really understood Ohms. I use it for continuity testing.

Another great video. I always have a cheap meter (or several) with me, but the good meter and probe kit stay in the shop. May have to get me a cheap probe kit to keep in the truck.

I used to think that too, but the cheap meters didn't last long using them every day. My fluke meter is over 30 years old.

Everything Fluke makes is fantastic! I’d have a cow if it walked off, though. The super-cheap direct import meters imho aren’t durable enough to be worth owning, but for my amateur use a cheap (like $100 Klein) ac/dc clamp has been fine. That and a moderately priced oscilloscope do most everything I need. If I were using it everyday as a professional such as yourself (or lived in an area with fewer thieves) I’d for sure get Fluke.

After fighting with the horrid Dometic fridge in my RV I said screw this...I spent $400 on a regular Magic Chef fridge from the big box store, placed it in the opening from the old Dometic, secured it with brackets....Now I have more storage space in the fridge AND freezer, and it actually holds even temps. Only drawback is that I have to have 120v AC power always, but since I don't boondock (and even if I did, a solar battery powerbank can easily power it) it does not matter. I also used a standard Takagi Propane tankless for my hot water, after wasting $700 on a Fogatti RV tankless that failed within a year and couldn't hold steady water temps. Next up is replacing the unreliable furnace. RV specific mechanicals have been, and always will be, overpriced unreliable crap.

To repeat about propane refrigerators versus 12 V refrigerators. 12 V refrigerators are much safer, going down the road with them on and much safer, pulling into the gas station. How many people drive down the road with a propane refrigerator on its illegal in some states and it’s illegal to go through tunnels with them on.
