I believe that humans are pretty aware of most things in life. We know that you should eat well, exercise often, sleep a lot, be kind to others, etc... but sometimes there's a disconnect between knowing something and doing something. For many of us, there are pivotal moments in our life that change the way we approach certain actions or habits. Moments where your eyes widen, and perhaps you "feel" it now, instead of just knowing it. This feeling overrides everything else and fundamentally changes the way you approach a sector within your life. For example, everyone knows they should run and many set new years resolutions to do so, however, many quit because they never had an experience that shifted their perspective, but more importantly their values and beliefs. Maybe you read a book, watched a film, or something happened to someone you know that made running an unexcusable part of your everyday life, instead of just something you know you should do. I strongly believe our habits are a direct reflection of our belief and value systems (or should strive to be) because they ultimately make up who we are. None of this is monumental or groundbreaking- I know similar ideas have been bounced around many times before me, however, I want to relate this line of thinking to my time spent with Tahir.
In a similar parallel, I've never felt my American privilege before. Sure, I've learned about it and felt very aware of how lucky I was to be born where I was and in the family I'm in. But, I've never had a moment (until now) that really stuck with me and put things into true perspective. It's moments like at 19:16 where Dylan and Tahir feel depressed about their situation that are forever stamped into my mind. There are many moments throughout the video where there would typically be a voice-over, however, I chose to leave them silent to symbolize me thinking but also to allow the audience to digest what was just said. I suppose the question I'm now reflecting upon is, now what? Yes, I feel like I have a better understanding of my privilege, but how is that going to change the way I act or the decisions I make moving forward? I don't have a perfect answer for that yet. I think making videos is a great start and something that gives me purpose, but I'm inspired to find other ways to help. I suppose more reflection and more travel will help me continue this thought process. I think I'm heading in the right direction though.
More about the video:
What I'm most proud of is the fact that I made this video so quickly. This is a project that would have normally taken me 2-3 weeks to edit, but I pushed through the perfectionism of wanting to tell this story in the best way possible. It was like being given 100 gold bars and being told to liquidate it all into cash as soon as possible. There was so much value in the footage I had, but I knew I couldn't publish a 10-hour video with every conversation we had. It felt like I was given the footage of a podcast and told to make a video out of it. It was painful to try to cut everything down, but I did my best to share Tahir's story in an engaging way. I would rather post 52 pretty good videos than 12 masterpieces this year. I think I'll learn more with the first, but I need to set my ego aside to keep moving forwards.
By the way, the majority of this video was shot on a $199 camera, did you notice?
Have a good day,

Turkey built it an welcoming culture thousands year ago, the Turkic people did many things (starting their own journey from middle Asia). They touched and get contacted with so many cultures, they changed their religion, they fought but never dictate people who lived on there before them, they always respected each culture and let those people live their own life with them. So as for today we're still carrying this collective intelligence, and I believe anyone from any point on the world if decided to visit random place on Turkey will felt this strong welcoming culture. It's so strong that even not knowing the language of yours, they'll find a way and got you some unforgettable memories.

Geography is fate to some degree but more importantly your attitude and your actions to circumstances are your faith. We should not just say it is geography not us. We are part of it, and, being part of this, we can change it for the better one person or even one belief at a time. Turkey is playing games of the past, half of the world already passed that point. These times are times for understanding not believing , questioning not accepting. Surely, what is going on now will eventually go away, but one must make sure that what is gonna replace is not again a game of past. When they are not doing something right we must think a better way to it, a way that is better than them and strive to be better than them rather than blaming our faith or geography. Something about this video hit different. Listening to these people's stories and their perspectives really shifts our way of thinking and our perception of our own lives. Our country may share a certain perception of Turkey, but you give people a chance to tell their own stories instead of it being told for them by people who have no idea what life is actually like there. You can also tell what type of creator someone is by their fans and unsurprisingly all your fans are also so open-minded and insightful which was so nice to see! Loved the video can't wait for all the other ones this year

Turkish people are so awesome and welcoming and generous! Kudos Max for showing us their perspective about life, faith, attitude, and morals. Continue what you are doing, you are educating all of us, and presenting us of things we might not even imagine(strangers to brothers/sisters). Media is a powerful tool and may promotes stigma, doubt, and fear. But you, by being you, triggered something within us, you are bringing back our hope to humanity.

First of all, the video is very meaningful. As a Turk, I am also someone who complains about the political and economic crises in my country and the bad things that happen because of it. But when I watched this video, it reminded me that it is not that hard for everyone to understand each other and share good things. I think this is something very special and the community you have created is really valuable. I hope I have the opportunity to chat and spend time with you one day. With all my love.

As a Turkish girl living in France, your last two videos made me cry with joy. It's nice to follow someone so kind and open-minded -- as everyone on Earth should be, not by choice, but naturally. I wish that all the people around me, in my country, on the streets, on public transport or the ones I see on TV were like you and your friend. I really appreciate you since you were making videos in high school, but watching you grow up and become this amazing human being is just another kind of pride that I could never know how to quantify. Thank you, for your honesty, your content, your sensitivity, you, quite simply Please never change the way you look and see the world. It's a very beautiful way to see it

Thank you for this video Max. I am a British Turk that lived in Turkey for 10 years, I have many close friends like Dylan and Tahir that I met in primary school. I am still in contact with them and visit every summer, the last 10 minutes of the video was heart wrenching as I've had multiple chats with my friends similar to 19:16 and the depressing thoughts of not being able to escape their reality. I can say I have also experienced the moment where my 'eyes widen' too often to count, from conversation in the past 3-5 years and news stories such as social media/information censorships or students living standards. I have fully acknowledge my British privilege. My friends all want to leave to move to a country abroad in the hopes of achieving a better life. Its incredibly sad as Turkey is one of the most beautiful countries in the world but due to the political control the beauty is tarnished. I've never seen any of your videos before but want to again thank you and Ryan for documenting your journey and allowing the Turkish youth to open up and discuss their struggles. Would love to see you continue with this theme in other countries or maybe Turkey part 2?? Always welcome to come visit the Aegean coast to my hometown Bodrum!

I am glad you were able to experience the Turkish 'misafirperverlik' (hospitality) as it is one of my favourite traits of Turkish people! I really loved the conversation with Tahir, all too often Turkey is portrayed as a dangerous country, but yet I am sure as you have witnessed the people give an instant feeling of safety and warmth. You have to visit Turkey again at some point, it is so geographically and culturally diverse and beautiful! Hey, Max! Your videos are amazing. As a Filipino working outside the Philippines, I accepted the fact that life is unfair. Coz why do we have to leave our country and work abroad and send back money to our families. But after watching your video, is geography really fate? Made me think…Is it our geographical fate that our country lacks opportunities now so which is why we are destined to help, to care, to serve and to bring out our skills in other countries? I somehow know that countries loved us for being us and being here. Working for other nation and making our family as our motivation. Working overseas for 3 years, made me feel that I am more grateful, happier, and my mind is at peace now than before. Hard-earned money is important to us but, it’s true, life experiences are the best treasure you can have. ✨

Thanks for video mate, that's give me some emotional damege but it's not problem, things we already know. There is something I want to say to Tahir, umudunu kaybetme brom çalışacaksak da el ele verip daha iyi bir gelecek için çalışalım, biz kaçıp kurtulabiliriz belki ama bizden sonra bu topraklarda doğacak insanlar adına yapmamız gereken sorumluluklarımız olduğunu düşünüyorum. Çoğrafya kaderse, bu kaderi değiştirelim.

Your videos are beyond different. It feels like a documentary, but more than a documentary. Sometimes I get that feeling, the sense of touching people's lives I've never met in my entire life, and probably will never see. It is observing them and realizing that I'm living in the same world, the same country, the same city with them, but with completely different lives, chances, and standards that make me think of the moment. While I'm sitting here and writing a comment to your video, maybe they're outside and having fun, or fighting over some small points of life. Realizing that through your video-which is just one random RU-vid recommendation for some people- got me thinking deep and writing this. And we are seeing different perspectives. They're really significant and meaningful. When I'm going abroad, my family always gets nervous over "the danger" in that country, whether it's Europe, Asia, or The US. And we have that certain image of America being dangerous and full of chaos. And seeing that you also have this image of Turkey shows that we are just getting some important points with the wrong ways, with no experience. And there are some truths of life. The economy in Turkey is getting worse, the number of homeless people in America is rising, the people are still dying in Africa because of reasons that we've never struggled in our lives, and probably never will. And I'm glad that you can see this and show people, the part beyond fairy tales and pink stories. It feels real, it feels alive. Thank you for this chance of experiencing.

Hello Max, I'm an italian 22 yers old lad. I discovered your channel yesterday, totally casually searchin for another channel. I was suddenly impressed from it, quality, contents and joy you involve in it and at our age. Music, positive speech and it look all real, not "same already known" forman of Vlogs is quite common now. Really we need more channel like your. What to say, I'm watching all videos now trying to understand all your story. You have a new follower now. 🙂 PS: i saw you like Porsche, you have a wonderful 993 at what i saw not that bad I mean, i like it too together with all german cars, and some oldie Ferrari. So one more point for the channel.

Max, I really like your optimistic and open minded view of life. Americans who enlist in the US military will spend time in boot camp and among other things learn to accept everyone who is around them. There are always people who when they become older in life tend to get very close minded and pessimistic. I am in my mid 50s and I've always promised never to do that. It is always so educational to visit other places to see how people live and get along. I will never forget the times where I went somewhere either here in the US or in Europe where my parents were from. I truly loved the content and cinematography of this video. It was very well edited. Looking forwards to more videos like this. You are extremely intelligent and beyond nice. Your morals and your persona are exemplary in my book. Thanks!!!!

"perhaps you "feel" it now, instead of just knowing it" I think ultimately feelings guide actions for the large majority of humans. I think this applies to every situation, both big controversial topics and well as day to day conversations. 10/10 recommend the book "think again" by adam grant as it goes into a lot of detail about how you can help people see your point of view by working with/around their emotions.
