Is Gluten Actually Harming Your Brain?

Most people think celiac disease and gluten intolerance only cause digestive symptoms like abdominal pain and loose stools. But a growing body of research suggests that gluten can have a profound impact on the brain in people who are sensitive to it.
If you go to your doctor complaining about anxiety, depression, ADHD, or another brain-related problem, it’s extremely unlikely you’ll be tested for celiac or gluten intolerance. And if you ARE sensitive to gluten and keep eating it, that can lead to inflammation and a cascade of negative reactions in the brain.
In this video, I explain how gluten affects the brain in people who are sensitive to it, summarize the research connecting gluten intolerance to mental, behavioral, and neurodegenerative disorders, and tell you how to find out if you might be suffering from undiagnosed gluten intolerance.

Saw you talking about this on Joe Rogan and you literally saved my life. I had extreme neurological issues, mood disorders and a very long laundry list of other symptoms. The doctors had no idea what was wrong with me. I tried a gluten free diet to see what would happen and I regained my life. I'll never be able to thank you enough.

Yup, no joke I wanted to go get assisted suicide done at the hospital. Suffered for 5 years. acne, insomnia, extreme paranoia, severe anger(I’d even take it out on random people I didn’t even know), arthritis, depression that felt like I was coming off of cocaine, loss of memory(extremely nerve racking), pain in the left side of my brain behind my eye, I was convinced I had a brain tumor….guys and girls I’ve only been free of it for 2 weeks and these symptoms have already started improving like crazy. I’ve had a few days where I just sat there and started crying cuz of how messed up my life’s been these last 5 years and these last 2 weeks have been pure bliss compared to the 5 years. I really hope this gets even better and I can find a partner in my life one day cuz this definitely affected that big time. God bless you all, stay the ef away from gluten please.

Undiagnosed Celiac almost ended my life through adrenal failure, my brother the doctor who misdiagnosed me. I literally lost everything due to his refusal to consider other options and was an absolute horror story. I have non-classical, so didn't have the stomach issues, but my brain was very inflamed and suffered from chronic depression for years. Once gluten was removed - depression was gone within 2 weeks. Went gluten free and when I accidentally ingested trace amounts, my brain felt as though it was going to burst through my skull. Due to the damage he did to my character and health, I went back to school for Functional Medicine and am a medical author and medical research writer.

Out of at least two dozen doctors over the course of over 30 years, none ever figured out CD as the cause of my long list of debilitating health issues. Hopefully you don't blame your brother, most doctors don't figure this one out. I was lucky to have a wealthy aunt who kept looking for the cause of her issues, and even with tons of money it took her decades to learn she had celiac disease. My mom died of kidney failure at age 77 without ever getting a proper diagnosis, before her sister finally found the cause of hers.

I have IBS, hormone disorders, and I’m prediabetic. Cutting out wheat products improved my body so much and reversed my pcos symptoms, and I haven’t even totally cut dairy. I think wheat is such a problem bc it has to be processed to extent to be desirably eaten. Then it’s usually stripped (if not whole wheat although still processed) to a point and it has to be enriched. The synthetic chemicals used in wheat I think aids in all these health issues as well. I think I have a gluten sensitivity although I dont have celiac disease. I’ve seen Gastro docs, nutritionist and all for years and avoiding wheat has helped me dramatically.

I have struggled with migraines, dizziness, anxiety, and stomach issues for years, and doctors could not pinpoint the cause. Recently I had blood work and had high cholesterol and high sugar. I was shocked. I had never had this before. I also have severe osteoporosis. I took it upon myself to completely change my diet. I stopped eating sugar and high cholesterol foods. I started to feel better but still had some symptoms. I saw this video and realized that gluten may be the culprit. I'm a vegan, so I was eating whole wheat everything.... pasta, bread, and cereal because I thought it would be healthier. I have stopped eating anything with gluten and I can't believe the difference. Dairy should be avoided too. Casein can mimic gluten. The casein protein is also very structurally similar to gluten, so the same molecular mimicry that triggers an attack when you eat gluten can also occur when you eat casein from dairy, initiating an autoimmune response. In fact, roughly 50% of those with gluten intolerance are casein intolerant as well.

@@Baby-Dont-Hurt-Me-007 Neurological effects of gluten intolerance - The best-characterized neurologic complication related to gluten sensitivity is ataxia, now termed “gluten ataxia”. Gluten ataxia is characterized by positive anti-gliadin antibodies, changes in the cerebellum, and ataxic symptoms including upper or lower limb ataxia, gait ataxia, and dysarthria. What does gluten do to your brain? The University of Otago researchers hypothesized that gluten-induced hypothalamic inflammation can lead to brain damage, body weight gain, and impaired blood glucose regulation. Hi Dr, I started experiencing all these symptoms roughly 6 years ago, so I stopped eating gluten. Thing is most processed foods don’t suit me anymore, and I don’t feel as strong as I used to on gluten. I would say my nervous system is shot to pieces since being gluten free…I have high anxiety. But it’s better than experiencing the neurological inflammation you talk of. Any ideas why I feel so weak and nervous on a gluten free diet? I’m all out of ideas…it’s really affected my life, I can’t be the only one not experiencing the “utopia” of being gluten free. I was a pretty confident guy before becoming gluten intolerant, but now i feel like someone who has never really flourished on this diet yet has to adhere to it to avoid the neurological symptoms.

I have read that this is perhaps largely a North American phenomenon, caused by the speedy manufacture of our gluten products. From what I’ve read, Europe doesn’t have nearly the levels of gluten intolerance we do, but they are more likely to practice “old school” manufacturing practices such as letting bread sit over night before baking. That has some sort of effect on grains. I don’t exactly understand it myself yet. But there are plenty of anecdotal stories of North Americans that can’t eat bread that go to Europe and seem to tolerate it there. Also, I do think gluten affects everyone a little bit, we just seldom make the connection. A runny nose here, a spell of fatigue there, knee pain that comes and goes that you can’t quite explain, trouble getting to sleep, skin rash on your foot etc. Took me years to make the connection for myself.
