Thank God I found you! I sent this clip to my doctor who isn’t treating my high reverse t3 and wants to lower my thyroid dose when my t4 and t3 are in the normal range. My TSH is suppressed but I’ve never had problems at this dose and I’ve been on bio identicals since 2001. My heart is good, my bone density is stellar. How can finally feeling good indicate something bad… I’ve only run into 2 doctors over the past 20 years who know what you know. I have suffered for decades from incompetence. These two doctors had me at the perfect weight, perfect cholesterol. The others destroyed my health and left me 50 pounds heavier with hair loss, gut issues, chronic illness and depression. My TSH is at 0.01 when I feel my best. My bones and heart are fine.

THIS!!! Ohmygoodness... thank you so much for this information!!! I have been feeling severely hypothyroid for 4 years now (since my full thyroidectomy and ablation) and my doctor keeps reducing my t4 because of my tsh?!?! He's saying I'm Hyperthyroid when I cant get out of bed, do the most basic of activities (let alone my job or excersice) and keep gaining weight extremely fast without a change in my diet.... I got reverse t3 tested on my own and my ratio was high. Been taking t3 now and I feel SO much better, but I was worried that it is keeping my tsh suppressed. This information helps me feel better equipped to make decisions and not let my doctor base things JUST on my labs instead of my symptoms and actual wellbeing. Thank you!!!

Thank you Dr. Child's. I am new to this. I was in a bus accident and was hit in the head with a metal bar during the accident. Chronic eye, head, neck and arm pain mostly on right side. Dozens of Orthopedic and Radiculopathy Tests. Mild Shoulder Injury and Facet Syndrome, congenital narrow spinal canal, Post Concussive Disorder. NO Diabetes. A year after the accident, I took a Cervical CT Myelogram and a Thyroid mass was detected. Two Ultrasounds and Two Biopsies later, mass/tumor is benign. Told that I do not have a Thyroid Disorder. TSH with Reflex Free T4 is .97 The lab never released my TSH levels. I asked my doctor and she said that the lab runs the test when TSH is abnornal. Endo wants to test my Pituitary Gland but no one knows what happened to my TSH result!!! My Endo won't run a TSH test. She wants ACTH, DHEA, IGF1, Cortisol, T3, T4, Vitamin D, Vitamin B12. NO TSH. How can anyone know anything without a TSH result? I am very uncomfortable at this point. Should I get a new Endocrinologist?

Thank you Dr Childs!! shedding light on complex and controversial issue of TSH suppression, esp in my case thyroidless and suppressed TSH and postmenopausal some osteoporosis & taking NDT thyroid replacement - I will start BHRT and good calcium supps (also good to know just calcium w/bone mineral supps) to protect bones and try not to have a severely suppressed TSH

Hi Diane I'm 55 in the same boat as you my tsh is non existent and drs don't care. I don't know what to do about it. I recently stopped my synthroid and only taking 10 t3. I immediately got my period back after a year. 😮 But My bones are probably already dust 😢

Hi DR Westin, how can I convince my General Physician/GP and Endocrinologist to not only look at my TSH value? As a post menopausal woman I am struggling with my health because both doctors have told me to reduce my medication based on TSH and FT4 only but it is causing me a lot of trouble, Can't sleep well, brain fog, no energy, feeling cold, waking up in a sweat and feeling my heart pumping harder, everything I do or try to do day to day is so exhausting! They just don't listen to me at all!

I'm on Armour, post-RAI Graves (with the TED). 2 grains daily, over a year. My TT3 and TT4s are LOW-normal (and I'm not surprised by that because I can feel cold, sleep well, etc). TSH test just came back at 0.027 😩 but I was naturally "undetected" (no TSH?) for years and the docs didn't say a word. Got on Tapazole after "eye problems" and diagnosis of Graves, and even when "euthyroid" my norm TSH was 0.4 or under (but not undetected). Thyroid storm --> RAI --> went to a cardiologist to PROVE my heart was fine (echo) and he said it's fine just take propanolol if heart rate gets over 100bpm. Which it doesn't. I can't win after that RAI, can I? I feel "almost hypO" (not freezing but cold) although my weight is okay. Again, *TT3 TT4 is in the very low range of "normal".* But that stupid TSH number... 😱 I'm terrified of seeing the doc!

I think that calcium supplementation is no longer recommended for postmenopausal women to prevent osteoporosis. Instead, vitamin K2-MK7 in a daily dose of 180 mcg or thereabouts is beneficial to prevent osteopenia and osteoporosis.

I had my thyroid removed in 1976 due to cancer. At the time the doctor said that due to the type of cancer it had to be well suppressed. Anyways, in the 90s - some 20 years+ later and in the age of my mid-40s - I had another doctor who I requested a lower dose of L-Thyroxine. He reduced the dosage from 300 mcg/day to 250 mcg/day. Needless to say, I felt a lot better. Since I moved out of the area I have another new doctor who just tested my thyroid levels. The tests came back and the TSH levels were 0.005. I have tried to explain to the newest doctor that I need that, to keep the reoccurrence of cancer down. He won't listen! He's taken me off of L-Thyroxine (250 mcg. / day) and won't prescribe me anymore. (As a matter of fact, he won't prescribe any of my medications!) Anyways, at my old age of 65, is having a suppressed TSH Level as of the recent testing, that bad? So if I sound/write a little bad, it's due to the lack of thyroid I have in my system. :) :)

Hi there I have a quick question if you don't mind answering, I had a Thyroid cancer when I was 21 they took my entire thyroid out I think it's called thyrectomy Thyroid cancer when I was 21 they took my entire thyroid out I think it's called thyrectomy. They told me my T4N T3 is normal but my TSH seems to be Surpresse. My husband and I have been trying to conceive can this have anything to do with it. I would ask my doctor but it's hard to get ahold of him

Dr. Childs, Thanks for the very interesting video:) I'm doing good taking levo and cytomel...finally feeling better after trying Levo only, Nature thyroid etc. Now, my TSH is 1.2 so how would I know that my heart is starting to enlarge? I'm on a small dose of 10 mcg. of cytomel per day!
@drwestinchilds
@drwestinchilds 6 лет назад
It's very unlikely that your heart will enlarge if your TSH is normal. That only happens when the TSH is suppressed and your T3 levels are elevated. But you can easily test with a cardiac echocardiogram.

I have a question my results came back and my TSH keeps on 0.01 n my free T3 3.6 n I feel good. But my doctor lowered my cytomel due to that and my latest lab results Came back as TSH 0.01 and free T3 3.5 n I feel awful even gained weight. My doctor wants to keep lowering my cytomel. I want to tell him no just to lower my synthroid. Does that make sense ???

Probably a dose-related issue, meaning when you transitioned your dose wasn't appropriately high enough.

I take a T4 medication and a T3 medication in combination! My TSH is usually quite low! I am 36 years old and I have been taking birthcontrol pills for the last 10+ years! I use cerazette (gestagen birth control pill, desogestrel is the active agent). Due to my birthcontrolpill I have not had a period for +10 years! How will this effect my bonegrowth and heartfunction?

Dr. Child’s, I take 130mcg of nature thyroid daily and feel fantastic. However, I would like to lose some weight and per your video here, I understand that leptin resistance and insulin resistance are also factors. I’m not postmenopausal and I have a calcium score of zero.😊. My doctor is one of the first functional medicine doctors here in Tarzana California and very well respected and I like him too. Do I just directly ask him if I’m a candidate to suppress my TSH in order to lose the extra weight?

Where are you located? I have had an ultrasound on my Thyroid and I have nodules and my Endochronologist wants me to do one of those light up the thyroid scans. I have not done this and don’t really want to do that. Also there were no antibody at all against my thyroid gland. None. He has not checked my cortisol levels or t -3 levels and I don’t know that he has planned too. I have lost about 23 pounds (not really fast) and my diabetes has improved. Much better and my A1-c is down. I don’t want a doctor to make a mistake with me. Can I be your patient?

A couple months ago I started Keto IF. I do not have a thyroid gland due to surgery. I was taking 100 mcg Synthroid 10mcg Cytomel. My recent TSH was 0.06. My doctor freaked. I am Post menopausal. I have had a heart attack 8 years ago. My doctor reduced my Synthroid to 88 mcg now I am feeling hypo again. 😰My doctor blames my diet even though diabetes is completely gone and I can lose weight for the first time in many years. One another subject, my doctor wants to remove my gallbladder due to a polyp. Will that affect my thyroid medication too? I am so confused. ..

A suppressed TSH doesn't mean that you will lose weight. You can suppress the TSH with T4 medication but that doesn't mean you have enough T3.

Can too much TSH cause bone loss too? 5.5?
@drwestinchilds
@drwestinchilds 6 лет назад
It's important to realize that TSH doesn't cause any problems by itself because all it does is either stimulate your thyroid or not. It is the thyroid hormones which cause the problems in your bones. Too much can cause bone loss and too little can cause fragility of the bones. A balance needs to be struck with your hormones, not the TSH. The TSH is just a marker of what is happening with the hormones (and not a good one at that).
