A new study suggests that intermittent fasting may lead to a higher risk of cardiovascular death, but Canada Tonight medical contributor Dr. Samir Gupta isn't fully convinced. Gupta discusses what he knows, and what he doesn't, about the new research and the impacts of intermittent fasting.

All the cheap junk food with processed crap is what's killing us. Make healthy food cheaper and see what happens.

Unhealthy food should be taxed like cigs and booze. And yes, the healthy basics should be incentivized

I won't argue against cheaper healthy food... but healthy food is a lot cheaper than most people think. I keep hearing people complain about how expensive healthy food is. They compare a $1 bag of chips to a $4 head of broccoli. They picked the CHEAPEST unhealthy food and compared it to the MOST EXPENSIVE healthy food. It sounds more like an excuse to keep eating chips. Well, foods that go bad very quickly tend to be more expensive. The cheapest foods are dry goods, like quinoa, lentils, beans, rice, etc... that you have to boil. Potatoes and carrots are also very cheap.

You know what else was bad for my heart? Being the weight that I was. Using IF, it's the ONLY thing that's actually been effective in me losing weight. All the working out and cardio I did before seemingly meant nothing, but once I started eating from 12-8 without even really changing my diet much I've lost 5% of my bodyweight and growing.

I'd bet the correlation is that more obese people would be dieting - and they already have cardiovascular risks. Seriously doubt that eating 2 meals instead of 3 is going to increase your heart disease risk substantially. Source: my career is in mortality risk.

Not even 2 vs 3. Just an eight hour window. It's a weak observational study. There are almost certainly uncontrolled related factires.

Poor journalism! 😠 Why would you invite a doctor for advice when he hasn't read the study at all? The full report is on the American Heart Association website, under "newsroom." What a colossal waste of time. Lazy reporting! This is why Canadian journalism is dying. They won't even Google it!

Right, a country that excels academically across all avenues with world class universities, a culture literally built on education since 200 B.C… Keep drinking the koolaid bud, the brainwashing on you has been successful indeed. Just because a country has a different governing style than ours does not discredit their academic publishes, especially about something as non-partisan as intermittent fasting… 🤦

I wonder about correlation vs. causation. Does this account for people who may already be susceptible to cardiovascular disease trying intermittent fasting in an attempt to get healthier by losing weight? Edit: Guess I should have watched the video. They do talk about it. The interviewee mentions that a lot of people may be doing intermittent fasting "because they have cardiovascular risk factors".

Poor timing for this piece on the part of CBC. Very insensitive considering Muslims around the world are fasting for their holy month. These studies also tend to change like the seasons, I remember a while back studies claiming eggs were bad for you, now ‘experts’ have reversed that statement based on new studies. Wishing everyone reading this the best of health. Wishing all the Muslims fasting this month the best in their worship through fasting. Live a healthy lifestyle everyone, & the vast majority of these health issues will disappear.

These studies of intermittent fasting being bad for your heart are garbage. They are not peer reviewed and they are a panic ploy to undermine the non pharmaceutical health benefits of the discipline. For most people, eating from 9am to 7pm gives a 10 hr window to consume ones daily nutritional needs. Fasting after 7pm until 9am the next day is only 14hrs. A 10 and 14 regime. This is an excellent regime and easily manageable.

Can't believe this is already being shown in the news so prematurely, from what I remember this is still being peer reviewed. But there is, from what I remember a 97% higher chance of heart disease for those that did restrictive feeding for a long time. This study was done for 2 years on a good number of participants. But again co-relation does not mean causation, though I would not discount the findings as well, better to just diet properly and just count macros.
