Ive been fasting for 5 days, fell normal, like I could do much longer. How do you know when to stop the fast and start eating again? Thomas DeLauer has a new article explaining the toxicity with durations of IF. It says fasting more than 20-24 hours 3 times per week becomes toxic. That means OMAD is highly toxic. Whats your take on his article?
I’ve been doing 20:4 for 2.5 months now with a 72 hour fast once a month and I’m down 60 lbs. The one thing I was not ready for when starting this journey was the amount of people in my life that suddenly turned into doctors and nutritionists when they found out was doing IF. Now I can direct them to this video to shut them up. Thanks Dr. Fung, you are truly a lifesaver!
@@Hat65 I lost 100 lbs and kept it off. Fung has also helped thousands to have similar or even better results. When you manage either one of those your opinion will mean a little. But since you never will your opinion is totally meaningless.
50 years old, 5’11 176 lbs, nine months ago I was 49 years old and 243lbs. On my birthday I stumbled onto a video by Dr Berg with Dr Fung in the video as well. I started Keto and intermittent fasting that day. I originally thought I would try to lose twenty pounds by Christmas (this was the end of October) but I’d lost that twenty by Thanksgiving so I kept going. Christmas came and I was around 210 so kept going hoping to get to 200 pounds. End of January I was under 200 and I kept losing a pound or two a week until I hit 176 pounds as of yesterday. I’m guessing this is my natural weight because I’ve been in the 176-178 range for about a month now. This is the greatest thing that has happened to me aside from my family. I will be doing this for life and the best thing about it is that it’s free! People ask me what I’m doing and when I tell them they tell m I’m not healthy, except for one person who happens to be my family doctor, who also fasts daily and eats the low carb, high fat diet. Thanks Dr Fung for writing your guide to fasting and for giving all this information away for free, you’ve changed my life. Here’s my personal plan: 18/6 fast schedule - clean keto with a little extra protein, high fat of course Anyone can do it, you just have to start.
@@smartinvestor2756 Best of luck on your health journey, although you will not need luck if you follow the principles of IF and clean eating. Also remember it's a lifestyle not a diet. Cheers!!
I am about the same; 49 turned 50/6'1/210 T2 Diabetes; started off just wanting to lose 10 ibs and saw Dr. Fung, Bergs, Berry's videos on Keto/fasting. Lost 10 lbs easily and the weight lost just kept going. I didnt realize how much weight I had to lose. Down 50 lbs and now can easily manage and control my health.
I’m happy to announce that from nearly dying with a blood sugar or 1200, I’ve gotten down to 125 without insulin. Intermittent fasting is a sure way to remedy type two diabetes, anyone who disagrees does so merely for the sake of argument or because they have not educated themselves on the subject.
@@lyn8356 If I was you, I would buy my own monitoring machine and test my blood sugar every day. Then you can see what is working and how you are doing and hopefully your program of fasting will start to work which means you can at some point in the near future stop taking the metformin. Otherwise you have to constantly try and make Doctor appointments to get your sugar checked to see if any actions you are taking are making any difference etc....
they not agree just because they dont want to quit eating breakfast lunch and dinner...just like people around me...they said nees to eat for nutritien and energy....and not many doctors in my country(malaysia) really promote IF for Diabetic recovery...not popular here...the only fasting people know here is only ramdan... .I am T2d....earlier my fasting BG reach 10mmol..and now I am IF +KETO + OMAD...my fasting BG down to 7.2mmol ...still looking forward to a better BG
Seventy year old diabetic here. Been fasting and intermittent fasting for over three months now. My mind sees much clearer..even "cleaner" now. My body feels GREAT, and fee;s the differences in how I eat each day. I take a multi vitamin every other day..ish. I have stopped CONSTANT EATING. Usually eating very little dinner, or no dinner, no breakfast and maybe two snacks a day,(usually a 1/2 cup mixed nuts) under 200 calories each. No deserts and no eating after dinner, especially late night eating has stopped. At seventy years old I’ve never felt so well.
Dr Fung is so far ahead against mainstream nutritionists, it reminds me of a circular athletic race course where he is so far ahead, he's catching up to the losers, and the losers seeing him behind them, think they are ahead!
As a t-8 paraplegic with a neurogenic digestive system, my body feels better while fasting. Food is a pleasure still, but it feels great knowing I don’t NEED it. Bloodwork is perfect and the weight keeps dropping. Thanks, Dr Fung. You’re truly saving lives. We love you, champ 💙

I grew up in the 70s, eating 3 meals a day, no snacks. I only knew one person my age with a weight issue. As an adult, I ate more like 1-2 meals per day, because I always hated breakfast and was busy during lunchtime. In 2000, I joined a gym and they recommended a "nutrition" program that consisted of eating 6 meals per day. And that is when my weight problems started. It feels silly, having to work at what just came naturally when I was younger, but here I am.
Most doctors treating type 2 pre-diabetes tell you to take Metformin and eat 4-6 meals per day! How crazy is that?!?! I could not possibly eat that much. I'm so glad to have found Dr. Fung's you tube site, as my blood sugar has come down to an average of 132. I check my blood sugar 2-3 times per day - at waking, 90 minutes after my one meal per day dinner, and at bedtime. I have lost only 10 pounds in my first month of fasting 23/1, but my goal is to get the glucose levels back to the non-diabetic range; my weight is the secondary concern. It has to come down because I am also eating a low-carb diet and no sugar. I will have my A1C the end of August, and I look forward to seeing the look on my doctor's face and getting to explain to him how I did it!
In many Indigenous societies ,religions and spiritual believes have fasting to cleanse body and soul ! Slowly we are realizing that the ancients had lots of wisdom knowledge that we thought was “ primitive”.
Was / is it knowledge tho? Or did they simply stick to their way of life from before our overabundance of food (and time to eat) and thus it works well for human bodies which of course are made for / evolved to live on that lower food intake
@@postedbyneal Fasting does good things for your body besides weight loss. I notice that my thinking is the sharpest the first 24-72h in a water fast and my skin is glowing by then too; I would be very surprised if people back then didn't notice that as well.
I gave up on sharing things with friends because they are usually the most unhealthy but yet they always tell me that I need to eat 3 meals a day. And they eat 3 meals plus snacks and plenty of sweets. Some have diabetes, HBP, high cholesterol and extra unhealthy weight.
People need to be ready to hear the truth if they not ready then no point to try and convince. But a little information now and then will sprout the seeds . It still worth it to direct to …. I tell them have study that method or have look that video ect and after some time I would hear that they started keto or carnivore:)
I agree. Keep what you're doing to yourself. They don't understand it and will try to discourage you from doing it. Since I've been doing the fasting at least 1 to 2 times per week, my fasting blood sugar dropped from 327 to 167. I will continue to do this until it's back to normal.
@ryan yap, it’s nice skipping breakfast as breakfast is the hardest meal to do low carb. What are breakfast meals, cereal, bagels, toast etc. if doing low carb, how many days to eat eggs? So now at noon, I have lunch or eggs. Better selection at noon.
@@panayiotismichael5006 start week one doing it gradually as I did. Eat supper, no snacking. Then have eggs for breakfast and still have 3 healthy meals. Then maybe week 2 or 3, go longer, maybe 6-8 PM to 9AM, then go to 10AM, that’s 16/8. Do your own schedule gradually. I’m 74 and I can go 18 hours fasting, it doesn’t bother me. I prefer eating first meal at 12 Noon.
Yes! Dr. Fung explained this himself; one is either in a feeding state, or a fasting state. It does really help when people learn to think of it this way.
I discovered Dr. Jason Fung over 4 years ago,. Let me put it this way if you value your health, listen to his various podcasts. You are getting his knowledge for free, he changed my life anyway. 👍💯
Finding you changed my life: have lost 52 pounds since last october by doing IF and HFLC and had not felt this good in years! Will be forever grateful for you and your teachings❤
Bonjour everyone, I bought the book : " The complete guide to fasting " I read it and since then I've adopted fasting 18 hours a day and I am not the same person anymore i.e. I am feeling wonderful, happy and healthy ! I encourage everyone to order that book, read it carefully, and fast. Thank you Dr. Fung.
IF is the best way to control eating, lowering weight, controlling insulin, and improving your health. IF keeps your mind cognizant of what you are eating and when you are eating. The US food and pharmaceutical industry is not happy with this information. Thank you Dr. Fung.
I am pushing on becoming slightly underweight now because of intermitent fasting. fasting has been absolutely wonderful and I am addicted to how I feel when I do it, however I'm in an upsetting conflict because I can't afford to lose any more weight, but I want to keep getting the benefits from the fasts. Do you know if there's a way around this? Dr fung hasn't addressed it at all, in fact, nobody has addressed this.
This 65 year old lost 58lbs or 26.3k since the 1st week in April. I’m so glad Fung sung. You can skip the rest. Just my narrative of personal success. As my glasses were fogging up from the mask I told her I was a nervous wreck. My heart was pounding and I know I was hyperventilating. I was also hypertensive and big time over weight at 258. Before she even opened her mouth I knew she was going for the metformin (137), beta blocker and ace inhibitor for the hypertension and tachycardia (129), and probably a statin because of my stupid ratio was slightly out of wack. My Doctor has a beautiful mind and I could sense she was reaching the end of her rope. It was brutal. I had to lie and tell her it was white lab coat syndrome . I really didn’t fast. I’m starting a new diet that I’m sure will work. The lies just rolled on and she agreed to give me one more chance to turn it around. I ended up with an extension of six months with a dreaded A1C draw to be completed 2 week before my appointment. On my way home I got some beer and pizza. I was ready to tackle this head on. Luckily I also started my journey with enlightenment from a plethora of true healers whom are way to numerous to name. I kept hearing terms like insulin resistance, low carb, keto, and fasting for autophagy among other things. Coincidentally a friend of mine I hadn’t talked to in a while got in touch with me and told me about the way that he was losing weight by juicing. It’s hard to fast at first. Juicing puts the foot in the door. It gives you your daily intake of the super nutrients provided by fruits and vegetables. This takes the edge off when you fast. Give it a three day detox followed by a one week juice only fast. At my age (65) it went pretty fast. Expect misery through the detox. Take plenty of showers and you might as well stay in bed. Juice when you feel like you're hungry. You will probably have to adjust intake depending on your individual needs. Most importantly inform your healthcare provider to assist. If they won’t then find someone who will. At first I was juicing 3 times a day. Earlier the next day. Kinda stepped it up some. Found out what I liked or hated. Combining different stuff. Kinda like cold cooking. I wouldn't say it was fun but really easily tolerable. Towards the end of the 10 days I was naturally deceasing the times to two per day. I was also shrinking my window until it was a four hour window. After the 10 days is over the next week was replaced with a low carb, high protein meal that I ate only to satiation. I had to learn to eat again. I gained some back but my goal was always 10 lbs from the previous goal when my eat week was over and I went back to the 10 day juice fast. I also kept closing my window until I was at one meal a day (OMAD). The great thing about fasting is how versatile it makes nourishment. You are no longer a slave to your cravings. Nourishment comes under your control and convenience. Through moving away from sugar, anything processed, with seed oil or sugar, staying low carb eating or juicing I’ve dropped to 210. This has been over a total 40 (4 tens) days juice only fast lately OMAD with an eating week. I seem to lose weight the fastest on the OMAD juice only fast. During eat week l lose on the OMAD but not nearly as fast. If I go to a four hour window I seem to stay the same. I’m now three days into my next 10 and find myself extending my fasts and experiencing Autophagy. In seven days when I’m below 200 I wonder if I should call her and ask for an early A1C? ◦
The A1c will be down, but give it a full 3 months to get the most improvement. I know it has been 40 days but the 1st 10 were probably a wash. Great work!
@@javadivawithdog it’s been three months. The 40 is the four times 10 days of juicing with an eat week in between. Some times I went a little more eating. Like at a family cookout. No one really noticed I was eating burgers without the bread. I’ve thought about it and I’m just going to wait until my appointment in October. I have the paperwork for the A1C draw at the end of September. Down to 200 now and just going to work on keeping it off and adding exercise to my regime. Hopefully I won’t have to see a healthcare provider until then.
@@deflo56 that seems like a good plan. I did my labs 9-10 months after starting to fast for weight loss. The lab that I was most happy about were my lipids. My LDL was 73. So pleased. And I am eating more fat than I ever have.

I’ve given up providing explanations justifying my position. Thank you Dr Fung you’ve given me a new lease of life.
Yes, I really thought everyone would be as excited as I am about low carb IF and how easy it has been to lose 33 lbs so far, but... no. As soon as I explain the first thing was all the junk I cut out of my diet - it is not for them. LOL. I guess the diabetes epidemic will continue.
Haven't been doing this long but my fasting blood sugar dropped from 327 to 167. I will continue with the fasting to get to a normal level. This is beneficial. I take a multivitamin everyday so I'm not concerned about any micro/macro nutrients.
Keep it up. If u combine exercise with fasting the results will be even faster. Also, u dnt need a multivitamin. Those things r scam. Only thing u need is electrolytes. Check snake diet

The amazing part of IF, and low carb, is that the answer is right there in front of people and almost no one is using it. I know about a dozen people who have noticed my transformation, are aware of how I've done it, maintained it long term, and none of them are curious about doing it themselves.
Whenever I get off track with my eating habits - I come home to your channel and you restore my purpose and put me back on track - sort of like homeostasis. Thank you for that.
Luv ya, Dr Fung and thanks. -- We should more often occasion ourselves to discuss "LOSING FAT." Continuing to use the phrase "LOSING WEIGHT" is to remain trapped in [defined by] a flawed concept... kinda like calories-in-calories-out. In fact, we rarely want to lose muscle and we specifically seek to lose fat. We are learning now that our hormones react to IF in ways that are muscle-sparing and muscle-building [thru autophagy and the expression of abundant growth hormones].

When viewed through the lens of human history, if fasting for short and or long periods of time where that deleterious to our health, we never would have made it this point. The fact that we flourished as species despite the stressor of food scarcity, for hundreds of thousands of years, prior to food being ubiquitous to the point where we consume it constantly, is the ultimate refutation to this notion that intermittent or even extended fasting will cause life threatening nutrient deficiencies. Yes, anything taken too far can be harmful, and that includes fasting. However, for a normal weight person to go 16 to 24 hours without food regularly, and for those who are overweight or are obese, to go beyond that for several days without food periodically, will not negatively affect them.

Happy July 4,2021 from WI USA! Dr Jason Fung, I like to Listen to you. I like that you fast yourself. I take a multivitamin daily. I started doing intermittent fasting, and fast up to 5 days long term, and that is my limit. You said something about sodium tablets when on a water and green tea fast. I decided to take sips of pickle juice and olive juice, to get my sodium that way. The 2nd day is my hardest, may get a little headache, yet passes and day 3 and 4 am energized, and want to continue to try reverse diabetes. Hugs.
To my mom I'm too skinny! Off of meds for diabetes! Before it was you're too fat! Made fun of me in front of a total stranger, did I mention it's my mother I'm talking about?
Am fasting 24 hours truth is I feel great only I’ve lost my appetite completely!!!! I am not worried though… I am excited hopefully I can continue to a 36 hours fast!!!
After going Keto and OMAD for about 2 weeks, I noticed really bad night time leg cramps. I thought it was potassium or magnesium and started eating a whole avocado in my salad every day but still cramping. Turned out it was just a sodium deficiency as I am also on a water pill and was simply losing to much salt through my urine that I wasn't replacing. Simple fix. Down 110lbs now after 18 months and feeling great.
In my first year of keto and fasting I was having random tachycardia so I took more of a an electrolyte mix that made me feel a bit better. One day I tested just taking salt and that was it! I still take the electrolyte mix because it helps me fast and it makes me feel good but I no longer have tachycardia since using more quality salt. Ketosis & fasting x4yrs.
@@CalmVibesVee That's awesome. It's so nice when the fix is something as simple as eating more salt. I have found the salt helps me fast as well because a lot of times we mistake our body's craving electrolytes for hunger, so we eat, but all we really needed is a little salt and the hunger passes. I wonder how many empty calories that little tidbit of knowledge alone saves me. LOL
Long before Dr. Fung was Brad Pilon with the "Eat Stop Eat." He convinced me to IF for two days a week (24 hours) and I would drop the fat. He was right. I lost close to 50 lbs in my late 30's over about an 8 mos. period. The rationale behind it was you could pretty much eat anything you wanted (within reason) and enjoy the rest of your meals if you were just willing to go without eating for 24 hours on 2 non-consecutive days a week. The problem is that once I dropped that weight and went to a maintenance schedule of fasting 1 day a week, most of it came back. And now I am in my early 50s and can OMAD for a week and not lose anything. I believe my body has adapted. So take fair warning. If you ever go back to "regular" eating or fasting less, it is much more difficult to lose with fasting the 2nd time around.
I tried doing a 36 hour fast and had to stop at about 24 hours because I started having weird nerve issues in my legs. It wasn't the macro-nutrients, it was the micro-nutrients. I'll try the epsom salt bath though.
How long is the longest you should fast? I started eating better on Jan 1st, but most of my progress has been after I started charting what I eat every day. I started at 253 and today I’m at 234, so I’ve lost about 19 pounds. But I’d like to make more progress. Most of the last 7 weeks since I’ve been charting I’ve been at 1200-1500 calories. The last three days I’ve been under 1,000. It’s amazing how well I’ve been feeling. But I’ve never fasted for an entire day. I’m thinking of giving this a shot.
After Japanese microbiologist research on Autophagy got noble prize. Every doctor now recommending and saying greatness of fasting. Where were these doctors before that. All religious have been recommending fasting from the beginning
Thank you Dr. Fung. I'm from Vietnam and we also have translated Obesity Code book. I've learnt many useful things from your sharing. Just want to ask that you mentioned alot about what causes unhealthy weight gain and how to lose weight, but how can people gain weight healthily? Do they need to raise their weight set point and how to do it without eating too much carb? If you already had a clip about this issue, just quote it for me. Thank you again Dr. Fung, I've lost 20kg in 5 months so far.
You need more protein and animal fat and less carb and vegetable oil. When you increase insulin sensitivity you will gain lean tissue naturally without even working out.
