Last month, Iraq's Prime Minister visited the White House in hopes of strengthening relations. This didn't go down too well with Iran who attacked a US base in Iraq shortly after. In this video, we take a look at the Iraq-Iran relationship, and how the war in Gaza complicated Iraq's relationship with the US.

@@guvjduficinot true at all, Iraq was stronger than the entire gulf countries combined not only it had the best economy in the region at the time but just at the end of the bloody Iraq-Iran war Saddam started his invasion of the gulf countries to monopolize oil production in the region. The only reason Iraq is at its current state is because of the actions of Saddam and the pressure the US put on its economy and ending up invading the country anyway.

@MM-dm4xj not quite. Iran is far younger than the name Persia. Persia is the Greek nerm for the Achamid empire (also known as Persian empire) which was known for its ever westward expansion. It was replaced by the Selucids which many know from their wars against the Romans. I was reffering to that Persian empire. And no even back then there was no region of "Iran", but a rather famous city named "Persepolis" birthplace of the empire. Ofc this is super compressed and oversimplified and you are correct that the british introduced the name "Persia" back to the world for that region, which at that time was a misnomer same as now. So yea you are correct but also not correct in this context.

Iran could make serious bank selling arms to Europe and Ukraine, too. Iran makes I-HAWK missiles, TOW missiles, artillery shells, even theater ballistic missiles. Simply put, the products in demand by Ukraine and her allies are much more diverse than what Russia is buying. Of course that'd require a policy shift in the government of Iran. Before 2003 Iraq was closed off to Iran with 98% certainty, Iraqi security was still strong and militarily could still hold its own. When US announced it was going to remove the Iraqi regime people in Iran couldn't believe it, too good to be true. First thing Iran did was send in operatives and by late 2003 was rearranging the sectarian (shia to sunni) demographics of Baghdad by enabling and smuggling in weapons, cash, and supplies as well as inflitrate Iraqi shia militias that Iran had been grooming for over two decades at that point. In this endeavaour Iran also aimed at eliminating former air force pilots of the Iraqi air force and succeded in killing over a 100 retired. To say the Americans in actuality fought for Iran is an understatement. Interestingly there is still a strain of Iraqi arab nationalism (Baathism) in Iraq and is a bit on the resurgence but these are being fought at any opportunity by the Iraqi shia militias loyal to Iran. There is also a growing liberal democratic stream, these too are opposed by the aforementioned.

I think people forget that racial conflict, which tends to be neglected when talking about Middle East, has to be emphasised here. Iran is a Persian nation using an Indo-European language but forced to write in an Arabic script; whereas Iraq is a clear Arab-speaking nations with minorities like Kurds, Armenians, Turks and Assyrians. Arabs have a long history of anti-Iranian sentiment and Islamic unity appeals little for them.
@philipbranco9568

Also, don't forget the religious point as well. Iran is overwhelmingly Shia, while Iraq is 50-50 Shia/Sunni among its Muslim population, and relations between the Shia and Sunni communities are not exactly harmonious. Think Bahrain and Syria, which both have large religious minorities.

It was naive. But it was probably based on the fact that it worked in Germany and Japan. USA defeated their dictators in a bloody war and afterwards, Germany and Japan both became prosperous democracies and American allies. But the context was different. Germany and Japan were the agressors in that war. Building a functioning democracy is not that easy as it looks like, especially not when bulding from outside and as an agressor. There has to be enourmous collaboration of the local people on all levels of the society to built it and democracy must become the leading ideology of the people. There are many ingredients that are not easy to control or even to know. Especially for an outsider. I am not saying that USA had the right to invade Iraq to build democracy there, I am just saying that their naive confidence was not baseless. But they overrated the role they had in the Germany's and Japan's cases and underestimated the work of German and Japanesse people, their culture, history, identity, sorroundings, the states of the societies and the general context of the situation.

Another factor that has played a role in the divergencies between Iran and Iraq has been the Iraqis' memories of the Iran-Iraq war, which resulted in huge casualties on both sides. Religion also plays a role. The Shi'a Muslim majority of Iraq has little in common with the Shi'a majority of Iran, belonging to different schools of thought. We aren’t bad people, in fact whenever we get in a military conflict it’s either in the name of freedom or spun that way. Our hearts are in the right place. When we hear about dictatorships being overthrown we congratulate them whole heartedly. Our government uses this as a way to weaponize their citizens in a sence. Or more accurately our politicians, we are increasingly corrupt and the citizens here don’t even know it.

Worth mentioning that shia islam isnt all created equally. Iraq is the historic center of shia islam since the middle ages. The version of shia islam practiced by the iranian leadership however dates all thebway back to the mid 20th century. Its new to iran even, and historically deeply disliked in iraq. Hence why very influential shia clerics are are the center of the anti iran movement in iraq. Iran bought influence with money by funding these militias, but there is little ideological or religious support for iran among the iraqi shia community.
