I have never heard someone say "bite" the pearls, they say to slightly rub against your tooth to see if they are gritty. Just like rubbing them together to feel grittyness. I would definitely not rub them together until you see powder because that is so damaging to the pearls...
Omg thank you soooo much for busting the biting pearls myth!! One of my friends broke 2 teeth and chipped another trying to do that! Thank you for sharing the truth, you just got yourself a new subscriber ❤️❤️
If I may correct some very bad instructions, never, NEVER rub two pearls together like advised in the video. You just ruined the coating on two pearls. You are destroying the nacre (pronounced nayker) or the hard covering the oyster produces to cover the tiny piece of sand that is irritating it. HERE IS WHAT YOU SHOULD DO: you take your pearls, choose one and GENTLY rub it against a tooth. Be very gentle. You can damage the pearl and your teeth. It only takes a second or two to ascertain whether the pearl is real. If your pearls are real, the pearl you rubbed GENTLY (the preferred test) against your tooth will feel gritty and that's it!! If it isn't a real pearl, it will feel like a plastic bead. You can also tell (sometimes) by looking at the hole of the pearl where the knotted silk thread comes through. Sometimes you will see the paint or coating coming off the fake pearl but t h e best, most trusted accurate test is the tooth test unless your jeweler is set up to xray your pearls. This is how they determine if your pearls are cultured or natural. One or two seconds rubbing, you"re done. Wrap your pearls in a soft bag or a jewelry box lined in felt. Never leave your pearls all jumbled up with other stuff and DO NOT spray perfume or hairspray on your pearls. It will damage them. The rule is: pearls are the last thing you put on before leaving and first thing off when you get back home. You can gently wipe them off before you store them. You should have your pearls restrung experts say, every two to three years but I say it depends on how often you wear them. Your pearls are precious so take good care of them and they will be yours to treasure until you pass them on. Just think, in heaven, there are twelve gates and each one is a pearl. I can just hear ppl saying, "Wow that's some pearl." I'm thinking, "Wow, that is one amazing oyster!" Seriously, it is good just to wear your pearls against your skin every now and then. That way, they stay lustrous and happy! The person in the video said no two pearls should be alike nor should they the perfectly round. This too. is wrong. Unless the pearls are baroque or irregularly shaped, they should be as perfectly round as possible. You may see a jeweler lay a felt lined box down, take each end of a strand of pearls. and gently roll it back and forth. If it rolls straight the pearls are uniform in size. That is what you want. Look at pictures. of multi- thousands of dollar pearl strands. They are as identical as they can be and as round as they can be. I realize the information I have offered opposes the lady in the video. Read up, study, learn about pearls and gems. Go to gem shows. Be an educated buyer. That way you are also a safe buyer. Thank you!
