Very expensive lesson learned for the owner. A few hundred pounds for a timing chain/belt replacement or, a few grand for either a new/second hand engine/ total strip down and rebuild.

Looks like a poorly maintained van to me. Front brake discs look past their best. Spent all their money on the silly body kit 😂

This reminds me of the days in the 90s at the Toyota dealership before interference engines customers would regularly tow in cars with belts like this with a happier ending

Great video Baz.... I would be crying into my credit card paying for a recon engine. This vid certainly shows the need for good regular maintenance. I m in my sixties, but i can still do a basic oil change (between normal garage services) snd change my filters too. My Vito states that a service is required every 24000 miles. That is too long in my opinion which is why i do basic stuff at 12000 miles (correct oil of course) Keep up the good work...we like the fact that you really do care sbout your clients and your personal working standards. 👍

had it happen on my 325 e30 shifting from 2nd to 3rd..... 4 bent valves😂 luckily the bottom end and pistons were ok. Had the head rebuilt and I still drive the car. My advise? always follow manufacturers recommended interval, and if you buy a car used and don't know if it was done, do it anyway. much cheaper than an engine.

Hi Baz, I've done one of these before with the same scenario - if it's the 2.0 Bi-TDI CFCA then my experience was as follows. Initially had the same train of thought as - bent valves due to it popping through the intake. Took the head off and to my surprise the valves looked untouched! Then realized the camshafts looked like they were positioned incorrectly. The gear wheel on the end of the cam is only pressed on, so it moves in the event of a belt failure. I'm not sure if the lobes are press fit, but the link gear between the 2x cams are definitely pressed on. Obviously this loses the valve timing, so the camshafts need to be replaced. Definitely lucked out in that case, but it prompted me to look further elsewhere when i saw no valve damage Hope this helps!

I have done many transporters with 2l tdi with jumpt belt. Usuly serpentine belt fails and gets under timing belt and jumpt. This engine never bent valves just rotate cam lobes ant samtimes demage some rokers. Put new camshafts ant thats it. Sorry for bad english.

HI baz, I have just bought a INA Timing belt kit for my A3 2.0tdi. I was going to put a Dayco kit on it but on your recommendations got a INA kit instead it was cheaper. The timing belt in the kit looks like a Dayco one, it says made in Italy on it and the teeth are a lighter colour but it does have the INA logo on it. This will be it's second kit at 10 years old, first time i put a genuine kit on it.

Just had the same problem on No1 Sons Mondeo 2.5 turbo. Belt and pump had been changed at 80k but pump siezed at 120k. Stripped the teeth and bent valves. Now I've had the head done, at my expense as No1 Son is skint after spending all his money on a holiday to Canada 😢😢 😢

i've replaced many of thease belts many overdue at around 230-250k kilometers, usually they don't come in for the belt but due to the water pump breaking and leaking, had one come in earlier at around 170k kilometers where the waterpump failed overtime and it actually broke the shaft and the cambelt sanded itself on the broken waterpump wheel causing the belt to slip 2 teeth came on a towtruck to our shop luckily it dident cause any major damage simply replaced the belt and all the accessories and it was back on the road again. allways follow the manufacturers descriptions folks. better be safe than sorry :3 There is alot of scummy sales people out there had many where they claim the belt been replaced once u take a peek and you see none of the accessory belts or tentioners havent been replaced you need to remove that cambelt cover to check if it's been done, had one where they only replaced the cambelt but none of the accessories was also some off brand chinease garbage belt that would of broken in 30k kilometeres!

Done a few of these you normally have to replace camshaft as the loads move, don't have to remove cylinder head😮😊😊

if it is that, VW actually designed a good motor. Someone below said the same thing, the gear on the cams move and they go out of time. but the valves stay safe

I had the same with my Peugeot 207, timing belt lost about 6 teeth, I timed it all up and got it back up and running and it ran fine then a few months later the head gasket went on it 😂

I have a lot of customers who I advise timing belt is due for replacement!very few book back in.Even when I tell them it’s so much cheaper to fit a belt kit than an engine rebuild!if they are lucky i tell them again the following year!Advised a customer six months ago,then it turned up on a recovery truck last week.guess what happened,cambelt failed! Tried to tell me I hadn’t advised him,just printed off copies of the last two invoices I had given him,advising overdue for a cambelt replacement.He then said so it’s my fault,I said well it wasn’t mine 😂

Normaly i pop cam cover off and see if any valves stuck down or a massive clearance..done a renault tragic 1.9 last week...all exhaust valves bent f.....😂

Just did a DV6 in a Mazda 5 that had stripped cambelt teeth, lifters and rockers replaced and it wouldn’t start would only cough. Ended up being the camshaft (press fit) lobes had been pushed round. New camshaft and away she went!!!

That is what happened to my volvo C30 engine. I had to have a second-hand engine in it.

How unlucky is that. Did a 2011 Fiat Ducati about 4 months ago, that had about 15 teeth missing. Timed it up, new belt on, you wouldn't have known there was a problem. Well surprised 😁

thanks for the video. It would be helpful to put the engine spec (even its letters identifier from valve cover/sticker thing) and year of the vehicle in the description. Us VW owners like to get intimate with our hunks of metal!!

I was going to criticise and say " my old nans got more teeth than that belt!" until I saw that the water pump had seized and therefore stripped the teeth from the belt. Surely it must have been over heating at some point? Preventative maintenance saves you spending a chunk of money all in one go!

Jack was only there to support it while I removed the mount then I moved it out the way, it does look as if it's jacked up tho 😂

C'mon Bazarooney, if it's an interference fit engine, with stripped teeth on the belt it's going to end with bent valves, if only it was a Ford Pinto or a Vauxhall Victor.

unlucky baz. we have a lot of customers who are told! their belt is due for change but refuse to book them back in. must think i'm joking when i tell them it will cost a lot more if the belt breaks.

Never accept a tick in the book for cam belt change or writing in service book, I’ve seen car salesmen do this to help a sale !

Can i ask what make of water pump was on it that had siezed. Ive had bad luck with a few water pumps and tensioners that ive replaced within a few months, ive fitted gates for donkeys years but am rapidly loosing faith

I'm 99% certain it's gates, nothing wrong with gates belts it's everything else they use in my opinion, I've had no end of gates pumps or idlers fail on vags I stopped using gates for this reason

I think im going to have to switch to INA aswel. Aside from having 3 vags with wp problems i recently had a little 1.2 clio within 10 seconds of starting the belt was running away from the pulleys into the covers because the tensioner was cocking over slightly and not running true.

@@bazmeredith Interesting, like you said must have had a belt before, I wonder if the pump was the original. One of the reasons I only fit a kit and a water pump if driven by the timing belt.
