as a papua new guinean myself i dont think we have the grassroots or pathways or proper infrastructure.......until we get our pathways and grassroots set up proper i think we still far away

The Nrl really need to do something in PNG and if they don't have proper pathways they need to make it happen now. As we all know Rugby League is PNG's number sport

PNG already has a rugby league system in place which is being improved. From what I have read, PNGRFL is working on establishing game structures, performance development and management, coaching, and training within existing PNG Rugby League paths to the QCup PNG Hunters, and PNG Kumuls including Junior Kumuls through the School Boys rugby league system which is being revived. Look at the available talents in the Digicel Cup, PNG Hunters, PNGs in other QCup teams, and PNGs in Super League, with some in NRL teams. That's evidence of investment over years of commitment. With both government supports, PNG will eventually have an NRL team, backed by PNG LNG and PNG investers. Yes, there will always be negative rugby politics, public politics, and government politics around PNG NRL bid. Don't forget, It's just rugby league right? But it brings nations together right? So where's sportmanship in all the talks? The PNG NRL bid is being processed thoroughly by all stake holders to mitigate risks. So bloody let the bid be processed till an end result is evident.

Justin Olam made it clear, yes we will have an NRL team sometime in the future BUT not Now. Our good PNGRL need to step up developing jnr pathway system inorder to have a greater pool of player coming into the system. We need more work in getting our house in order before taking this step. PNG will definitely field a team in the NRL sometime in the future, thats for sure. Australian govt must be very careful as we need a quality side that could actually win NRL matches, be successful as a professional rugby league team and a well oiled busines entity. That should be the foundamental objective. Too much politics involved already, the Aussie govt are against the clock to stabilize geo political relationships between PNG and Australian. The last I checked from 60mins Australia, The chiness are building airports and wharves in the western province which is not far from Darwin. Take note NRL, Politics will ruin the NRL we use to love.

They need to do more for NZ. 500 players a year leave NZ according to Tony Kemp.

PNG NRL TEAM A must. I have lived in Cairns Qld and seen lost of PNG, Fijians, Tongans, Samoans and TI mixed kids who playing in college or suburban teams. It's a great opportunity for this kids to play in the PNG NRL team in future. Down in Brisbane Suburbs there lots of PNG and pacific Islands playing in college teams plus intrust and feeder clubs through out Brisbane and Goal Coast and Townsville as well. There should be a program of selected schoolplayers of PNG and pacific Islands be travelling to PNG for comp

The problem is who is going to fund the team if it were to happen? Cost of flights for home games would be insane.

Random PNGn here, pretty sure most of us are happy with the QRL Hunters as our team for a NRL feeder... what about Perth?

I would like to see a secod tier competiton with PNG, North Sydney, Ipswich, Cairns, Newtown and a second NZ team to name a few. For example. Maybe a Perth team and Pacific Island team. It would hold enough relevance and prestige to attract fans and corporate money and then when the time comes to bring in another team the best suiter from that comp is ready to be promoted. If not promtoed they stay but still compete and learn how to operate as a proftiable and competivie organisation until then.

They should build more in Melbourne's, imagine a Melbourne's local derby.

The NRL has to bring in the PNG Hunters into the competition at some point. As Rugby League is the national sport of Papua New Guinea, which will mean an infinite surplus of loyal and passionate fans. However, the NRL would need to assist the Hunters with Junior Pathway Programs, Team Infrastructure, Player Recruitment, etc. So it will probably be a while before the Hunters make their NRL debut, but it's something that has to happen at some point fairly soon.

I personally would say that, do not underestimate PNG's ability when it comes to NRL. Most PNG indigenous players are naturally talented and they played rugby for their life since rugby was introduced to png. Only if NRL give them an opportunity to play in such high pressured games i personally think that they can withstand that because NRL is a national recognized sport in the country and every boys play rugby just like any other fun sports. Just give them that chance and see what they can produce on the NRL level.

People need to actually look at this realistically and not just by what sounds good on paper. Firstly this is purely a political stunt. Secondly the infrastructure, grassroots pathways and resources in PNG is lacking significantly and needs time and more importantly $$ to develop. Thirdly consider average income per household, TVs per household, demographics and ratings etc. Yes rugby league is the #1 sport in PNG but that doesn't mean it'll equate to success especially when you consider the ceiling for financial growth - very, very low compared to other places like Perth, NZ2 etc. Even if you based that team out of QLD, you might as well just award a license for a 5th QLD team which would guarantee more $$, more TV ratings, more pathways etc. Love for PNG but the fact we're even talking about this proposal over other cities is nonsense. Give them time to build and invest more into Pasifika rugby league then we can come back to this convo.

This is Australia's move to counter Chinese growing footprint, massive money pumped in and massive quality infrastructure being built in PNG. The stadiums are half empty. Expanding would mean more empty stadiums and lower quality games. People are sick of these 44-6 score lines. The game is crap. What they should do is bring in a perth team, an Adelaide team, and merge 4 clubs into 2 in nsw.

My personal opinion as PNGean, I feel PNG preparation is not up to a standard to put up an NRL team yet. The whole move behind this is more political than on merit.

Instead of investing and spending all that money , for another nation to play Rugby league, invest in our game , in other states and raise the profile and standard for a true national comp. Australia has been ignoring PNGs bid for a long time. Our team in the Queensland Cup is not a feeder team so most of our talent that are way better than current NRL players don't enter the NRL. Our players have deliberately overlooked unlike other Polynesian players. This is just a political move in response to China's growing footprint in PNG. China has spent more money and built more better quality infrastructure than Australia has done.
