I've been playing MMORPGs for 20 years. To be honest, the story, which begins at Character creation, gets anoying. The polytheistic chioce you get seems to mean nothing (must be a fairly vain, empty, attempt to make your character unique). Then I was introduced to Mother which got very anoying, very quickly. I don't need computer mom's approval, nor is it even welcome so, I began dreding interaction with that thing. She basically made me feel like saying, "Look, lady, I know you mean well but, please, don't praise or compliment me. Just shut up and tell me what to do next. Thank you." I'm an experienced player and the story did not impress me. Guild Wars 2 was a decent story and worth playing through once. Honestly, I haven't seen a story that wasn't done before already in quite a while. I should say, this is also why Baldurs Gate 3 doesn't impress me. I also don't like Baldurs Gate's woke tone and I'd likely cast aside all of the NPCs that they try to force on you as companions. That leaves a shell of a game but, it's not fun to have a green chick, who's life you save, treating you like trash every time she opens her mouth. It would be nice to see some gratitude for saving someones life. Sorry for digressing. In this game, woke, wretched, women are replaced by woke praise. Yes, I said "woke" about Final Fantasy. Why? The praise you receive is like a medocrity participation trophy. You pay half-way attention to combat and then someone tells you how "special" and "important" you are. Final Fantasy lays the false praise on super thick for rather thin effort. Where is the mystery, the puzzles, the cleverness? One praise-worthy aspect is the good vs evil motif but, it is also weak because why good in Final Fantasy IS good isn't clear, nor is why evil IS evil clear. Guild Wars 2, with their active time events with the "evil" guys attacking a town or people made it much clearer that, these guys are evil because they are willing to attack and kill, right in front of you, completely innocent people. Now that gives motivation to take up the battle. Traveling accross a map to go attack whatever the quest givers tell you to attack, only to see creatures, who are minding their own business, not harming anyone, and then kill them, is very deflating. Then there are the empty, substanceless "gods" which I don't even know where to begin. There's no temples, no devotion, no depth there of any kind, making hearing their "praise" and making you into some "chosen one" seem meaningless in the extreme. What do these "gods" do for the world, how are they involved in it? Did they make the world on which you live? Of what value are they? Maybe that is gone-into more in later game but, special people don't derive their power from themselves or else, what is the value or purpose of even having "gods"? Better to simply leave them out or have just one that is a focus but, perhaps not any sort of focus of your adventure until late game. Again, it's kind of hard to see the value or purpose of some of the pieces of this game when their importance is represented by nothing. No, Temple or Church of the gods. No devotees. Not even any symbols that the beings in the world wear to pay some respect to their "patron". By looking at the game, and nothing else, you couldn't even come to comprehend, by observation, that there even are "gods" in the world. My ultimate assessment is, Final Fantasy Online lacks the substance and drive of the older Final Fantasy frnachise. It's not a bad game but it is a rather thin game, filled with bloated appeals to ego, vanity, and empty, purposeless, things. The game is the real-world equivilant of a warehouse full of riches and treasures when all of society has colapsed and which couldn't buy a mouth full of food because, compared to food, it has no value at all. Riches only have their value because they enhance life above poverty. When everyone is rich, what's the point? Light has it's value by contrast with the dark. Dark only holds its fears by contrast with the light. If all anyone knew was light, what would their be to fear? If all anyone ever knew was the dark, who would be seeking hope in the light? There are few, and in some cases, no contrasts in this game. No devotees to contrast with heritics. No rich to value and appreciate the wealth they have gained by comparison to the poor. No darkness or dark places seeking to destroy the light (they're just minding their own business when you show up yo slaughter them). There is no light moving forwared seeking to illuminate the dark by peace, love, or dialogue (you just show up and start blasting them and you don't even try, by dialogue, to interact with the bad guys on some higher level first, then they decline and attack you first. Nope. You just show up and they are bad, because someone told you, "they are bad", and start the killing. And, honestly, that makes for a very shallow game over all. Final Fantasy Online isn't a bad game but, neither is it a good game because it is entirely missing a superior adventure path of light, shown and proven out as the "light" for good reason. Neither does it have a dark path, with the darkness showing valid reasons for why it IS dark and a lesser path. It is over-blown with vanity "feel good" garbage that, if you do have any true devotion in your personal life, Christian, Jew, Muslim, Buddah, or other serious religion of wisdom and devotion, will be off-putting because the "gods" of Final Fantasy Online lack all substance, to the point that you'll wonder why they are even a component of the game. To see such a thing done well, I would point to games like, The Elder Scrolls, Morrowind, Oblivion, or Skyrim, where the "gods" of those world had Temples and Churches, and their "god" and special actions of working for them could do things like cure diseases, heal, and provide some benefit. The Elder Scrolls also had devotees, and poor people, and symbols of the "gods" and even the ability to get married under one of them with a symbol, a necklace, not a wedding ring but, still. Those games were so popular, with people STILL playing them to this day, because the worlds definately had its contrasts. Final Fantasy Online is the Mayonaise of the mmorpg style games and that's no compliment. There are some contrasts but they are slight and are not deep or profound. I wish it weren't so but, the Fallout franchise suffers from the same issue in reverse, with everything being bad, deadly, or monsterous, with everything going from bad to another bad, or a worse bad. That makes it hard to enjoy when the contrast is so slight. Even you, as a player of the Fallout games, are only extreme by being good and doing good because so few people in the game are even making such attempts, being the only one, at all, doing real good in the whole world. Dull, right? A game is much better when there are good contrasts like in The Elder Scrolls games where there are others helping the world like you, to an extent, and those with different agendas, some bad (on a wide variety of levels, theives, killers, tricksters, monsters) and some good (also on a wide variety of levels, priests who heal, city guards, patrolman who can and will save your life if you are attacked on the road by bandits or other "bad guys", investigators, spies working for good behind the scenes, etc.) It is because of those contrasts that give any word its depth, substance, and variety. Final Fantasy Online lacks a whole lot of that contrast. As an aside, The Elder Scrolls Online falls harshly short is in an interesting way by forcing the player to do intentionally wrong things against what type and kind of character you are trying to play. To be honest, I don't think I have ever seen a game do something like that which, to be honest, really angered me. For every Elder Scrolls game I have ever played, I have hunted, to extinction, The Dark Brotherhood. I have always played the Elder Scrolls game that way, seeking their distruction. I have never once become a member of the Dark Brotherhood. I have always destroyed them. That's how I play. The Elder Scrolls Online force players to absolute dissadvantage by choosing not to be evil and not to murder. My wife and I were both paying $15.00 a month for that game until that point. The Elder Scrolls Online was really good, up to that point. Talk about making me very angry at a game I play for enjoyment. No game I play gets to force me to make evil choices to be a successful player or be a lesser player who loses out over other players because I refuse to play as "the bad guy". I'm sorry but, I get to play as a guy who tries to be good, if I want to play that way. Forcing me to be evil or be under armored, under armed, or miss out on other advantages, while I am paying to play the game every month, is going yo stop me playing that game. I get to play how I want to play or that game can go straight to hell. My answer to that is, 100%, no. No, every time. Anyway, that's my assessment of Final Fantasy Online as it compares to other main-stream mmorpgs, with my thoughts on some of those games thrown in.

ARR is honestly isnt bad at all its still allot better of a story then other mmos and it is fun regardless of what people say think the only reason people hate on it cause yeah the story gets better and game is more fun the farther you get in game but ARR is still good as it is and is still fun.

Ehh arr just isn’t that good. Very generic. Summoned baddies, fight the empire. Basically the same story as ff1. Wayyyyy too much run here and there and fetch this and that. Blah. Post arr was such a boring slog too. If you want to spend 300 hours to watch a 20 hour b movie, it’s your game. It’s not bad but it blew me away that it’s not more streamlined given it’s age.

Something i really enjoy about ffxiv is that ita really accesible and easy for newcomers to get into. Ive played since 1.0. I got my wife into the game around the end of stormblood. No content had been vaulted like most MMO'S tend to do after a few years. You coukd easily get people available for dungeon running. And theres always someine running old content for one reason or anothee.

New player here I got the game 3 days ago on PS5 after watching someone stream ARR on RU-vid and in short…. I have been having a absolute blast I’m on Dynamis with the exp buff still in the middle of ARR and it’s just amazing the story, the people you encounter and play with, the combat everything has been amazing. It’s my first final fantasy game and one of my first large scale mmo games. Definitely a learning experience but very very much so worth it

The most important thing to keep in mind is that the game starts at level 1. ARR is also vastly underrated. From the very start, I was enamored by the little details, starting as early as the _loading screens_ . There's just something endearing about them. ARR also builds the very foundation that _makes the expansions shine_ . Thus, don't dismiss it as a slog to get through, but see it as a more MMO-styled foundation that builds the very world you become a part of.

I first played many years ago, and sort❤ of rushed the story. Then I recently got a new pc and picked it back up. I'm a dad and husband now. And its the only game I can play so casually. Theres no time limit to anything. If I only have a few minutes, I can level gatherers. If I have a few hours, I can work through the story, or do roulette to level alts. Its a genuinely relaxing game. You never know if the dps in a dungeon are suicidal, or if you can just focus on DPS. Man. What a game. Dont get me started on the story.

I've played four characters through A Realm Reborn and into Heavensward. Squeenix has vastly improved the early experience by streamlining the formerly 100+ quest line that stretched between ARR and HW, and even more so by providing a generous number of special teleport tickets to a location that one will be revisiting often during the post-ARR quests. No longer is "Pray return to the [Redacted]" a minute-long Chocobo Porter trip to a location that previously had no direct teleport access.

I don't know why but MMOs now feel so lonely. Most people run about their business paying you no mind as if you were part of the background. Rarely would anyone stop to talk to you. Even joining an FC is lonely depending on how big that FC is. And in big FC there's always a core group of friends and everyone else are just extras. In small FCs there are usually barely anyone online and if they are nobody is talking. If you find nice people in duties usually that ends when the duty is over and you'll never see them again. There's nothing worse than playing a MMO and feeling lonely.

I debated on devoting a section to music, but ultimately I determined that while the music is phenomenal it's not something this going to sell a new player because for many people the soundtrack is going to be a secondary factor when determining if they want to play a game, and part of that is because you can enjoy an ost but not necessarily the game or vice versa. That being said I do consider ffxiv's music to be one of it's strongest aspects because well Soken is a genius. Furthermore, I think many of the best songs in ffxiv need to be experienced to fully appreciate which makes talking about some of the best examples difficult with out spoilers. For example, I used "Neath Dark Waters" as a background song. By itself it's an amazing piece of music, but to really experience that song you need reach that moment when it first plays.

Hello, just wanted to add one more thing that happened to me. If you are to start the game on console and buy a sub/expansion and for whatever reason you want to switch from console to PC you will HAVE to start completely over again. This happened to me when I first started on PS4 and then got my PC. They do not move anything over and if you have purchased anything via console, you will have to purchase it all over again for PC. Idk if they will change that with the Xbox release but this is something that happened to me when I made the switch from PS4 to PC and after calling them to let them know what happened they specifically stated that they cannot move anything of mine over.

It's worth playing. Story gets better after ARR or a realm reborn. You can always find players for raids and if you level up enough, you can solo dungeons and trails if you can't get a party together. Also unlike other mmos like Destiny, they don't remove story content so you will not miss out on anything. I'm currently on Stormblood, looking forward to playing the shadowbringers storyline once I finish stormblood.

After spending the past 4 hours trying to log into the game I think I might just quit all together. Knowing that if I mess up one more time tomorrow I have to wait another 24 hours to try to sign in again it's just not worth the stress and issues I'm going through with this shit.

Sounds like a password problem. PS5 can save your password for future use, but PC has to type it in every time. Doesn't sound like a game issue.

Simple answer: Yes. You can enjoy the story from start to finish, no matter how late you start it or how slowly you do it.

I think what FFXIV expansions have most over all other mmos is that each expansion adds on to the previous, not just in new fancy gear and dungeons but also storywise. in WoWs case there really wasnt a story (or so ive heard) until rather recently. Most of its expansions just seem like overpriced dlc, whereas each expansion in FFXIV definitely feels like a sequel to the previous game (yes, they are ALL the lengths of fully priced games which justifies their pricetag 10fold) I would probably wait, if you're new, until Dawntrail drops. Then you can buy everything for $60 instead of paying $60 rn then again when dawntrail releases. But its up to you.

The MMO elements are severely neglected though. Of all the MMO's i've played, i find FFXIV to be the loneliest. There's no sense of community, and there's just no interesting long term goals in FF either.

ARR while poorly paced, sets up the foundation of foreshadowings referenced in the expansions. Even Endwalker still harks back to what was done in ARR. Primal arc is when it picks up, not Heavenward.

HATE the story ... wouldnt be so bad if it wasnt play 5 seconds for 5 minutes cutscene, play 5 seconds for 5 minutes cutscene, play 5 second for 10 minutes UNSKIPPABLE cutscene ... paid for a game not an interactive spirits within/advent children(both of which have waaaaay better voice acting/ voice sound quality) .. dont get me wrong .. the game (when it lets me play) i love .. nearly 4 years now ... just cant stand being FORCED into the story just to be able to play ... "14 doesnt waste your time" ... have you never done Castrum ?

Honestly ffxiv is insanely boring, most things it does are incomplete, as nd may as well be a dead world game. Could be a lobby dungeon crawler treadmill. Story is good. But in all other aspects ffxi is surpreme.
