Is killing wrong? In hunting axis deer on Molokai, Hawaii, we had an opportunity to explore those topics - not only in relationship to animals on the hunt, but also humans.
Molokai is home to one of the largest cultural monuments to Polynesian human sacrifice. In many instances, those who were selected to be sacrificed were doing so in order to be in the good graces of their higher power.
With this in mind, who are we to judge their cultural practice of ritual human sacrifice simply because we have different perspectives and relationships to death?
After exploring the relationship to human sacrifice, we embarked upon a hunt ti kill axis deer, a non-native Indian species of deer that has overpopulated the Hawaiian islands without any natural predators. The ecological effects have been harmful to native fauna so we visited the island to have a transformative experience for ourselves, collect highly nutritious food, and support the ecology of the islands.
