Is Loki a Transgender God? A Look at Loki's Gender Ambiguity in Norse Paganism

I've been itching to get back to doing videos about paganism and about my patron Loki. This has been on my mind since it cropped up on my Facebook feed and I felt compelled to do a video about the lore and my own feelings about the topic.
For me, Loki's genderfluidity is one of the things that compelled me towards him and it is in him that I found the confidence to come out myself. So I owe him a lot when it comes to understanding myself better in that respect.
Now, the topic of gender and sexuality is something that many people have strong feelings about and if you have a different interpretation I ask that you comment respectfully or walk about if you feel that you have nothing nice or civil to say. Transgender people are not a new phenomenon and in the stories of Loki, we see that the Norse people of a thousand + years ago were aware of these ambiguities and how they could be presented.
With all that being said I hope that you enjoy this video and that you can take something away from it. If anything I hope you at least enjoy Pooka showing up at the end.

Always a good day when you post 🖤 i always figured Loki just does whatever he wants in terms of gender, being of two people could apply to being male and female too , plus yeah he becomes animals frequently it seems. Also didn't Odin become female a few times? Usually out of necessity for a goal. Also also pooka is adorable with great timing

I like that you made this video I always figured loki was non-binary or just wanted to chill and have a good time enjoying the strengths and pains of both genders he just wants to learn new things and thinks women and femininity is a fun endearing state of being also he obviously is a loving deity since his main stories are mostly center around children and in ragnorok he joins his daughter after she is finely freed from her exile and he is angary at the gods for hurting his children that's why he ensure their destruction or at the very least thats how I interperat their actions love your paganism videos thanks for putting in all the hard work and HI pooka good boy for all those barks teach those bigots a lesson!!!!

As a half Turkic I respect Pagan views. There are still shamans and people that still Worship Tengri lord the blue sky in the great steppe. How the Norse have big similarities to the beliefs in the great steppe.

Loki is a witch trained by his mother who can turn into literally anything that doesn't make him trans, it's really disrespectful to mess with someones religion like that, a minority of people still believe in norse mythology 💀

This is my religion and I have been following the Norse gods, Loki in particular for over 10 years. My today's use of terminology, Loki, who has changed his sex and given birth, could be called transgender because he literally changes his gender numerous times. As I said in the video, Odin even talks about him having lived as a woman on Midgard and birthing children. By today's terminology this could be said to fall under the transgender definition.

I do understand what you mean.... but i still think he isn't trans. More like genderfluid. Cause as you said... he lived in Midgard as a woman and i think he does identifies (how do you write that!?) as a man/woman depeds on his shape (gender) -> not non binary?

Literally I'm going through transitioning FTM and I knew I just had to work with Loki primarily during this new adventure in my life. Of course he's transgender and nonbinary and just anything he wants lol.

I personally see Loki as an AFAB deity who took the He/Him pronouns and is basically non-binary. I also look at the ancient idea that Loki was probably the Home and Hearth Diety prior to Christianity. Since it was Nordic Christian Authors a hundred years after conversion writing the lore that people look to. Ancient Pagans had no issues with the LGBTQAI+ people, Christians, and other monotheistic middle eastern religions are where the bigotry came from.

As someone who just recently discovered Im trans/ftm (i think Loki had a bit to do with that even before i recognised that maybe he wanted to work with me) i felt a really deep connection to loki more so than any other god ive interacted with from the hellenistic pantheon.

Hey, Nash! I just watched this video, and realized how I made a comment, long ago, on the video you made about making altars (the comment is still there), where I said you should make some space on you altar for Tiwisko. A protoGermanic deity whose name means double, since you are a divided personality. I made that statement based on the runes you chose in your name, and it always amazes me how accurate the runes are. Back then I had no idea about your being a non binary person or whatever the official term is, so I couldnt understand, myself, why the runes kept telling me the same thing. In any case it happens much too often that people dont listen to what I say, so I wont comment any more. Instead I'll say this - from the bottom of my heart, I sincerely wish you all the luck in the world to find yourself. You will be surprised where your path will take you.

Yep. I've learned to 'tolerate' but not 'accept' certain ideals that people TRY to con me into (not this topic, but in this life in general.) Heck, it's what brought me to Paganism years ago. Don't like something? Then don't do it knucklehead; and let that cut under your nose heal. No skin of my back; just don't harm others that do what they feel is right for them. Haters fall back to the long-engrained dogma (those tight reins that get yanked so the bit gets pulled back into your wisdom teeth if you dare step out of the norm) of Christianity. Different interpretations of all religions have existed for centuries and will continue to exist until the Sun pops.

Yh, that's a good way of thinking about it, however I think of him as hes described as in the stories, as a shape shifter. That said, I ain't ignoring the possibility of Loki being transgender, it's a interesting subject.

Hey so right out the gate I want to say that I have no experience personally in the world of being non binary. I was born a male and I feel like I am a male, so excuse my ignorance in the topic. That being said I did want to comment on this. Would Loki not be considered hermaphtoditic? Based on what is stated in the texts we have today it seem like he physically changes sex. Not so much gender necessarily. I mean he's super fluid when it comes to gender based things but a man is not able to give birth to a child. Or anything really. He actively gives birth to 2 possibly 3 different beings like you stated. Especially since when he's being referenced he's being referred to as a man originally. That would mean that he must become a woman or at least take on the reproductive organs that women have. I really hope that I didn't come across as a one of those people you stated at the end of your video but, in traditional fashion, if I have and you wish to fight me when to the death it shall be! No really though I do enjoy your content and do not wish to cause any harm. Thank you!

Hey this is actually a really good question and it sent me down a rabbit hole of thinking! Now I'd never considered him hermaphroditic since that usually implies having both male and female genitalia at the same time to some extent and I've always interpreted the stories as him changing from being male to female in all respects literally, it is fascinating to think that hermaphroditism could be an interpretation of him. (I say him as in most stories he seems to present as male.) It could be that that could have be an intention of some stories, though the terminology was lacking back then and the details were lost to history. It really does open up a whole lot of interesting questions that I'd never actually though about before. That's honestly really fascinating! You definitely don't come across like the people I was talking about, (one person tried to report this video... which was weird lol) and thank you for this question because it's really given me a bit to think about! This is one reason why I truly enjoy making these videos, because it's always great to see other people's ideas and interpretations!

Could he have had a womb and a peen?? He obviously has sex with some of the female gods in the way a man would seem to! That's super crazy haha. I kinda ment more as a metaphorical hermaphrodite but maybe they were trying to express something more physical?! All this stuff is super crazy to think about. It really sucks we only have like 1/10 of 1/10 of a percentage of the information available now days :( also I appreciate the videos. Yes I a majority of stories he appears as a man, but in the Lokasenna Odin also calls him out for supposedly choosing to live as a woman on Midgard and even giving birth to children during that time. While he may have a preference for a male appearance, at least from the stories we still have, it's obvious that he doesn't shy away from changing his sex when the situation calls or it or apparently when he wants if the story from the Lokasenna is to be taken into account.
