I liked it. But felt really underwhelmed by it. Part of me thought the end would reveal that Maxine actually killed Molly to get the lead in the movie. I thought that would have added to it and her ruthlessness to get to the top!
I saw it yesterday. A man walked out right after the part where she took down the knife guy… the gore was pretty gorey, but I guess that was to be expected. As a period piece, I loved it! I felt it really captured the moment and spirit of place.
@@SparkleCaticorn Stylistically, I loved it! I think West really nailed the giallo aesthetic right down to Tyler Bates' score. Narratively, I was disappointed. I did not care for the last 20 minutes. I feel they basically gave away the reveal at the end of X and again at the beginning of Maxxxine
It's definitely the weakest of the three, but in no way a bad movie Mia Goth carried brilliantly, I think this story alas had its end. We don't need this story anymore, but I believe Ty West plans to expand on this franchise by making it a cinematic universe. I can imagine that being like reusing actors and setting them in different eras.
I loved the music and 80s setting. However she was kicking ass then sees her father and stalls???? What? Also she was raised with him you telling me she had no idea he was looking for her??? I wish there would have been a movie about her backstory escaping him and how it was being raised by a religious fanatic. I really did think at the end the cops were gonna think that she killed those people and she was in jail dreaming about her making it big after that movie.
MaXXXine is almost perfect! I do think like it’s the weakest out of the three films. Doesn’t quite hit the landing, it feels a little tame & bit mainstream. As well as uneven, too much going on in a short period of time, a big reveal where you can see it coming & an underwhelming finale, but that being said…it was still a hell of a fun time. Highly entertaining throughout. A fitting conclusion to this trilogy.
I did too. I was even thinking it was the days leading up to watching it. But logically, who else could it be which would make sense? So it was the correct choice but also obvious.
SPOILERS: Agree on a lot. I was quite happy with the first 2/3rd but the finale.... I mean if squashing her dad was the ultimate step to becoming who she is meant to be why was she the damsel in distress? why did she need rescuing? why did she only shoot him when he was pretty much already dead? I think I know what they were going for but they did it in the wrong way. I think she should have mirrored Pearl more by the end to make it a cohesive trilogy, and sorry, no one turns my Maxine into a damsel, she is a fucking star! But I actually loved the grimy noir 80s vibes (which I wasn't expecting) and having Satanic Panic here made so much sense. Like you said, not a wash but dang did they leave some potential behind.
It was a letdown. Aside from the alley and car scene, the movie was very tame, and Maxxxine isn’t much of a character. She’s very one note, and even though she’s obviously traumatized and trying to move on, the movie doesn’t resolve that in an interesting way. It’s just a boring story.
I concur with you and most of the comments here. X the standout, but trilogy overall cool. Only a few cons with it, yet cast and production spot on. Fantastic post as usual media 👸
I just saw this last night and I think I quite enjoyed it! Perhaps not as much as X but more than Pearl. I think it's another fun pivot on horror subgenera to the 80s New York shot Italian slasher mystery and it completely nails that aesthetic with the way its shot and the stock characters (though if it was being true to it I think the gay friend would have had to die sooner 😄) but perhaps more importantly it's a nice thematic wrap up on everything they set up in the first two.
Just saw it last night. I loved loved loved it! Everything about it hit just right. It may even be my favorite of the three. I was definitely not expecting that 😁
@Nightmare Raven Do you think it may have been better if they just revealed who the stalker was to Maxine and the audience toward the beginning and just made it a cat and mouse game that way? Her father sends her a video or voice message threatening to harm the people around her unless she gives up her sinful life. She refuses. She tries to get to him before that can happen while shooting this movie. He's difficult to track down. We have causalities on both sides until the final showdown. Seems like they were relying on the secrecy of this person too much while it seemed obvious all along.
Would agree with your thoughts that this was sort of in the middle of- I liked the setting and the 80s imagery in the film but do think it could have gone further.
