Is Mental Illness Curable?

Mental health is something we all have. Just like we have a physical health. We can have days where we feel on top of the world, checking so many things off of our to-do list, meeting with friends, feeling fulfilled and just good. You know those days? Maybe it’s been awhile since you’ve had one of those days, maybe things have been so stressful that you can’t even remember what that kind of day feels like.. Don’t worry! We will get to that issue in a bit. But for now, just know that mental health is defined as “a person’s condition with regard to their psychological and emotional well-being.” If we are taking care of ourselves as best we can, taking breaks when we need them, making time for the things that we enjoy, etc etc.. we should have a pretty good mental health. We should feel good, be able to manage all we need to each and every day, and be pretty happy....

I’m a little confused on the statement about mental illnesses can’t be cured but in the neuroplasticity explanation, it almost sounds like it is contradicting the original statement. From my experience, and what I understand of my diagnosis of bipolar disorder, I can re-wire my thought processes to help me in stabilizing my mood, to be at and maintain baseline. I may have periods of stability, but regardless of what mood zone I’m in, I will always have bipolar disorder, even if my symptoms are not evident
@swearveit

I'm seeing the same thing about my illness too. The mind is such an interesting organ. This is why there is such a big stigma about mental illness, mainly many thinking its not real and a bunch of gibberish. So exhausting!!😞
@Towanda-qh2cw
@Towanda-qh2cw 5 лет назад
swearveit - I’ve gone back and forth on the stigma thing. I’ve gone from being ashamed that I have a mental illness, something that is not visible but is something that was keeping me from living a full life, to not caring what others think. It was a difficult road to get there but I think the more of us who are ashamed, the more stigma will remain. Individually, each of us has to find that peace and reconcile within ourselves and fight the stigma by taking that 1st step and not being ashamed.

I have BPD and I agree with your comment. I could be wrong but I there was no cure for personality disorders. I'm scratching my head. Also, I'm ashamed of some of behaviors but not my BPD. It has a really bad stigma and a lot of therapists won't take us but I never did anything to 'contract' it. It's either genetics or my abusive childhood. I didn't have control over either of those things so just trying to get better. Wishing you the best🙂

I ended up smoking heroin in my late 20’s for a whole year because of my depression and anxiety. I’ve been 8 months clean now and going to treatment. Finally agreed to antidepressants a month ago. Unfortunately, I had completely lost my mind and therefore I lost everything else. It’s been hard but my therapist told me about the plasticity thing. He explained it like two freeways. When I started using heroin I plowed a new highway through, now that I’m off, I have to go and re-plow my old freeway that had filled in (with weeds and plants). It’s been a hard road but I’m sticking to it.

Kati, why do I feel an enormous empathy for animals? One day I saw a little cat and I couldn't take her home and, after half of the year, I still feel terrible that I left her.. I cry over the movie of the animal, but not people and also I love them more that people sometimes.. Why is this?
@teclagough389
@teclagough389 5 лет назад
For me, I care more about animals than people. How I see it, it is typically easier for people to get help over animals. We can call someone, knock on a door , even go into a random store to find help. Animals have been evolutionary developed to rely on humans.

I'm the same way. An animal is just who and what it was made to be and needs to be and dose not pretend to be any thing else. It has no ego or malice. It only wants what is needed for survival not vanity. it doesn't lie or manipulate if it is violent it is for food or defense nothing more .it puts the needs of its family above its self it knows it's place in the pack. I find that if a person is of these virtues you will connect more with animals than ppl . I to feel sad that I can't save all of them , but I think I may be somewhat projecting on to the animals .the shitty way ppl make me feel and wishing I could be free from every shitty person turns in to I should save every animal even though I can't and don't know if it is OK and happy on its own.❤️

Kati how can I make myself to study, I know how important it is, but I just can't.. I'm too lazy and I just can't.. Pls help
@justkara2938
@justkara2938 5 лет назад
Set reminders on your phone, & set a time in your schedule that's only for you to study. You can study over a long period before your test or quiz, because that'll help you know the information better than cramming(Spacing effect). You could try studying for 25 minutes, and take 5 minute break or 30 minutes & take a 10 minute break. During your breaks, you could do something fun, that's not related to your subject, so that studying isn't completely draining & boring. I hope that helped!

@yuyugo62
@yuyugo62 5 лет назад
0. Pay attention to your self talk! you are not lazy, maybe you are tired, confused. Be kind and patient to yourself. 1. plan your time and days you will study. 2. organize the content in small parts and how much time you will spend in each content. 3. start READING 5 min, rest, read 10 min, rest 15min and so on. Find the amount of time that suits you best. (I recommend pomodoro technique) 4. reward yourself every time you finish a study session. 5. there is no rules, find your study style: studying by yourself or in groups, in your room or library, etc You can study with "study with me" videos in youtube, videos with timers or nature backgrounds(avoid music or any distraction). hope it helps a bit, good luck! :)
@polinadenisova8665
@polinadenisova8665 5 лет назад
I'd say, the first thing is to divide your "study" task into measurable, actionable parts. Like, "read three articles" or "review one chapter", or "write for 15 minutes". Another helpful thing would be to start with something which is related to your studies but is not studying per se, like cleaning your desk, organizing your notes, making a list of books you'll need from the library. Pomodoro is a great way to start stuff you feel reluctant to do: promise yourself you'll just do 25 minutes of whatever you need, and if you don't feel like continuing, you'll stop there. 25 minutes is better than nothing anyway! Good luck with your studies, Debora :)

Kati, with all due respect, as a psychologist I truly worry about the message in this video. People experience many different mental illnesses and experience them for many different reasons. Adjustment disorders *do* remit. People *do* experience single episode depressive disorders. People experience acute stress reactions and acute/brief psychotic episodes that are *not* “incurable.” Each person’s situation is unique and they should consult with their local psychologist and/or psychiatrist with questions regarding their own unique situation/illness/diagnosis and treatment plan. I do think we can all agree though that promoting mental health and wellness is a step from which everyone can benefit.

I was in treatment for severe depression for 10 years, was in and out of the hospital, missed a lot of school, tried so many medications and I thought my depression would never be cured. I did genetic testing and found that the only med I hadn’t tried was the only one that would work for me. Getting on the right med has been like night and day for me. I agree with the proposition that mental illness is Not curable for the most part. I do not believe that this is always true, however. Certain mental illnesses can be brought on from environmental factors, diet, or lack of self care. Less genetic mental illnesses on an individual level, may be curable. For example, I had depression and many other issues. I found out a few years back, that I was allergic to dust mites, (and was meanwhile, working in an office that had massive quantities of paper dust blowing around), had two autoimmune diseases, and was also diagnosed on the autism spectrum more recently. Previously, I was diagnosed bi-polar II and with OCD. Once I figured out how to treat my autoimmune issues and had my dust mite allergies under control, I stopped having symptoms of mental illness. I also personally, do not see autism spectrum conditions as mental illness, so I feel as though, as long as I follow my protocol I have established, that I will have likely 'cured' my mental illness. Thoughts? Maybe curable among certain occasions?

Thank you so much! This gave me a lot of hope and clarity over a question I've had for years. When I first heard the term 'mental illness', it scared me because it sounded permanent and essentially unchangeable. Perhaps you could make it better, but you'd never 'come out of it'. It was when I read about neuroplasticity a while ago that I realized there was real hope for long-term change, and it affirmed the value of therapy and learning new thought patterns. I've never heard the balloon analogy! I've always likened it to paths in a forest; continual use packs the dirt and keeps the path, but if you chop a new path through the forest, it'll grow while trees grow back in the old unused path. Your analogy using the cold finally put into words what I'd begun to theorize lately, 'mental illness' is an illness in the sense that a cold is an illness. One can't be 'cured' in the sense that once it goes away, it'll never, ever come back, but that's just like the cold! If you heal up from it, and then take care of your health, you'll be far less likely to experience it again, and likely not as bad, since you learned the signs and treatments the last time. It makes me realize anyone can experience mental illness, and that we all do from time to time, which really normalizes it, and also then tells me, that even though some may experience it more severely than others, we all can do something to heal up from it and get to a place of mental health! Thanks again! I love your channel and what you do!

I sort of get your point, sort of not. I suffered from social anxiety for a year and a half, and last April I recovered. I no longer suffer from any of its symptoms, my brain no longer thinks the way it did. Yes, I occasionally have nervous moments, but it’s the healthy kind, normal kind. I'm confused.... I am a female with BPD. I thought there was no cure. There's therapies that help, like DBT. I thought that even with therapies cluster B or BPD could get better but never cured. Katie help me out please. There's so much misinformation out there.

there is no cure, but it does get better with time and age, and some people manage to get to a point where they no longer meet all the criteria needed for the diagnosis. I am nowhere near this point, but it has gotten better. I've learned not to be so impulsive and get help before it escalates. I still don't always manage, but I can laugh at it sometimes. don't give up, we can do this!

unfortunately I experienced a close friend's passing over the weekend + the grief + shock is a struggle. I live with anxiety, which hasn't risen up in the way it usually does. however Sunday I felt numb, literally felt nothing and then the physical pain kicked in (muscles sore). then yesterday that numbness lessened + grief started processing. I've not cried or broken down yet but I know the tears will show when the shock experience passes. good video but I think an explanation on differences of recovery/cured/remit might need clarifying x

Kati, I have a question. Ive read that our gut is considered our second brain. Could anxiety and depression be cured or subsided with good gut health? Possibly going to a GI doctor to check your gut bacteria and or going to a nutritionist too? This is a very serious topic for me since I’m in the storm of depression and anxiety and trying to do right by my body and mind. Thank you for your knowledge and time. Olivia

Hi Kati. My name is Angie and I am new to the Kinion family. I was wondering if you have done a video on abandonment. I grew up in a broken home with an alcoholic father, and I believe that I have abandonment issues. Lately I have been obsessed with making sure everything I do is right so that nothing bad will happen to me. I have been very afraid and anxious. I’ve been trying to practice mindfulness each day. Do you have any advice for me? Thank you so much!

My anxiety is like a fast growing weed. Every day I hack away at it to keep it somewhat under control. If I focus on one spot, that might start to look okay, but then I turn around to find another spot overgrowing. And if I take my attention off of any one area, thinking it’s okay for now, everything grows back. Someone told me that if you grow up with a lot of trauma, then that’s just how your brain develops. I hope I can be normal someday, but I’m not super hopeful...

Kati I love your videos they’re richly informative that you put in everyday language in a genuinely caring compassionate manner that people can relate and understand, there was another Yt channel by another therapist I unsubscribed to bc it began to occur to me it didn’t seem healthy, and I saw some others seemed to notice by comments they made. That therapist includes an “impressive” announcement at start of each video theyre “scientifically” backed. Another viewer pointed out in the comments psychology is a social science - not science that’s implied in the announcement - it’s a social science not a chemistry equation - while I may be incorrect or misunderstood, it seems to be an effort to promote the assumption whatever those videos teach must be correct - some people may buy into that correlation which isn’t to my knowledge how it works - since it’s a social science as that other viewer wrote in the comments not a clean science formula like chemistry equation....im so thankful I found your channel it’s very uplifting healthy and richly informative

Hi Kati last week one of my friends saw cuts on my arm, then later she told my other friend. So I got mad at them. So the next day in the morning when I was at school I was mad and angry so then my two friends also told 3 more people then also told the counselor, so the counselor called me in, and my 2 friends were there with her so the counselor asked me if I wanted to talk about it so I said no. Then my friend started talking maybe for a minute she stopped and wanted me to answer her but what I did is I went, the counselor came behind me but I was running so she couldn’t catch me. Then the counselor was staring at me the hole time, like in the hallway and stuff. And I asked one of my other friends to ask her if she’s going to tell my mom and the counselor said yes. My mom wanted me to go talk to the counselor even tho i didn’t want to talk to her. But few days ago i went to talk to the counselor. I said to her that i wanted to talk to her, like what my mom said that I’ll go and explain to her about what happened. But when i went at first i didn’t say anything then she asked me if my mom and i talked and i said yes. Then she asked if i said the truth and i said yes but then she asked me what i wanted to talk about but i thought that she knew what i wanted and that she’s going to ask me about my self harm but she didn’t. She also said that my mom called her and told her that i wanted to talk to her about something, but the counselor said that she doesn’t know what’s it’s about, also she said that she knows something is happening and she’s worried about me. But i felt that i couldn’t say anything and i was crying the hole time not saying anything.

Hey, I'm no Kati but I am experienced on the mental health/illness side of things. Your friends, mom and the counsilor are probably very worried about you. Self harm is no light problem and they might not have any experience on dealing with it or advising people on how to deal with it. My advice would be to talk to your mom first. If it is difficult for you, write down what you want to say first. You can ask her to just listen and not interrupt you until you are done speaking so it will be really your words. Then you can also tell her whether or not you want help from the councilor or not. Maybe you could see someone from outside school if you feel more comfortable with that. In addition: it can be extremely difficult to tell people what is going on with you, but it can also be very helpful and maybe get you to someone like Kati who can help you heal. I hope you find the courage to share the truth and to take care of yourself.

Noor Channel Thanks for sharing. I am happy to hear you have good friends who care for you. 🙂 Feeling like someone isn't on the same page as you can be frustrating. It's not that she doesn't know the topic you want to talk about as it seems like it has already been established as "the" topic. She doesn't know specifics and wants to leave it totally open and up to you to discuss what's on your mind and in your heart at the moment. Her asking leading questions could make the focus on something you don't want it to be and that would be a bad approach. She's there to listen to what you have to say. I know it's not the most easy flowing conversation and that can feel somewhat unnatural but it is the only way to make it totally about you. Please talk with her.
@tahmoresz4069
@tahmoresz4069 5 лет назад
It's hard to talk about things like self-harm, and even harder to talk about why it's happening in the first place. When my mom found out that I self-harmed, she simply told me how to do it so it looked like natural accidents rather than self-harm. A strange reaction but ok, I wasn't mad at her for it, it gave me space to go seek professional help when I was ready. I've seen therapists and psychologists and some of them helped a lot. If you want my advice, I think you should ask for a proper therapist and talk to them when you're ready to share any or all stories that you want to talk about. Trusting a therapist can take time (you can talk about small problems until then) but that's okay, and if you don't like your therapist, ask for a new one that you like.

Hey Kati, why do I cry whenever I talk to my kids in a nice voice like when reading a story or singing a nursery rhyme? My eyes start watering and I just start crying anytime I talk to my kids like that. I also feel really sad and lonely anytime I’m around toys or a library or schools. For some reason when I’m around innocent things I just imagine all the kids being sad or suffering. I was wondering if this is a real phenomenon. I was neglected as a child. Thanks.
