This is Kacee's first time watching reaction to the movie "Batman Returns (1992)". The monstrous Penguin (Danny DeVito), who lives in the sewers beneath Gotham, joins up with wicked shock-headed businessman Max Shreck (Christopher Walken) to topple the Batman (Michael Keaton) once and for all. But when Shreck's timid assistant, Selina Kyle (Michelle Pfeiffer), finds out, and Shreck tries to kill her, she is transformed into the sexy Catwoman. She teams up with the Penguin and Shreck to destroy Batman, but sparks fly unexpectedly when she confronts the caped crusader.

Only those characters could tell you, for sure. But, in the scene, Selina says she's "tired of wearing masks"... which means that she's trying to be her actual self, by not wearing one. Then, she admits she just doesn't know which is which. But that could have a lot to do with the bad experience she had working for Shreck. She can't decide between getting revenge on him or trying to be happy with Bruce. It's all a big mess! But that's why we're still talking about this movie, now, in 2023. So, there you go.

Same here, her performance is iconic. I watched this in the theaters as a kid, and it was my first time seeing anything like her. To answer your question in the video, she was not the first Catwoman. There were Julie Newmar in Seasons 1 and 2 of the Batman TV series in 1966/67, Lee Meriwether in the 1966 movie (making her the 1st Catwoman in a live action film), and Eartha Kitt in Season 3 in 1967.

Michael Keaton is awesome. He was a stand up comedian and his hiring for the role was very controversial. But I think he’s the best Batman. His performance as Bruce Wayne is believable. He’s not overdoing it to try to cover for himself. There’s a bit of a sarcastic tone to him, but he doesn’t overcompensate. As Batman, he looks awesome and doesn’t have that weird voice Christian Bale had. Dark Knight is still my favourite Batman movie, but Keaton got the performance spot on for me. This movie was so dark that it caused Tim Burton to be fired from the director’s chair, and Joel Schumacher took over, with diminishing results. Batman Forever did well despite the campy silliness, but Batman and Robin was so bad it ended superhero movies for about 5 or 6 years.
@ChrisWake

Keaton has one of my favorite bits of acting scenes in all of Batman media. His plea to Selina at the climax is one of the more heartfelt moments of the character in film. It's up there with Bale's scene of Bruce and Alfred in the manor in Dark Knight Rises. Keaton does so much in his facial acting than any other Batman had or has done. He isn't stoic like Pattinson or playing up the playboy up to eleven like Bale. He's just an expressive actor and it's all in his face. It's a damn shame his acting isn't recognized more. If people would watch his eyes more, as Bruce or in the cowl, they'd know who the best Batman ever was.

Back in ~1985 when the script was still being finalized for the 1989 movie, they originally wanted to cast Willem Dafoe as The Joker. They couldn't get in touch with him and went with Jack Nicholson. When they signed Keaton, there was an issue with the budget and they couldn't afford both Keaton and Nicholson. Jack Nicholson actually made a deal to take a massive pay cut but backload his contract with larger royalties and merchandise tie-ins since he knew the movie would be such a massive success. This was pretty much Jack Nicholson's early retirement and why he never really needed to work anymore.

There was a bit of a tonal mismatch with his portrayal in the final cut. In the original script Max Shreck was meant to be Penguins younger brother. The Copplepots had a second son that they kept after casting Penguin out. This is why Penguin wanted to murder every first born in Gotham and why Max was just there in the movie with no real role despite having some intense scenes with Penguin.

Great reaction! Batman Returns was my introduction to the caped crusader! FUN FACT: During one scene, Michelle Pfeiffer had to put a live bird in her mouth. They had bird puppets on-set, but Pfeiffer thought they all looked too fake. Also.. For the role of Catwoman, Michelle Pfeiffer trained at the Steeleboxer kick boxing gym two hours a day for six months. She also practiced yoga, weight lifting and karate. Additionally she spent three months training with a 12-foot bullwhip. Pfeiffer called that one of her most "challenging roles" and critics called it one of her most "iconic roles" that is famous forever. Sources found on IMDB.

I was lucky enough to watch all of the 90s Batman movies in the theaters, and Batman Returns is my favorite one. Not only was it more ambitious and violent than the previous one, but the actors brought their best to it. Michelle Pfeiffer is a huge Catwoman fan, and was clearly having the time of her life here. She got the role after Annette Bening dropped out due to being pregnant, and she ended up stealing the entire movie. 10:48 The "Hell Here" scene was such a great and chilling way to introduce her new persona. The scene where Catwoman flawlessly whipped the heads off the mannequins was done in one take by Pfieffer herself; you can find the production footage if you search for it. 18:00 She really did put a live bird in her mouth during that meeting with The Penguin. 26:57 The scene where Selina and Bruce figure out each other's identities is so compelling; they're the only ones not wearing masks, and Pfieffer does a great job as portraying someone barely holding onto her sanity. 31:28 Her bitter rejection of Bruce is such an interesting scene as well; Bruce willingly revealed his identity and risked everything, but she wanted to live - and potentially die - on her own vengeful terms. The final shot of her (actually another actor serving as Pfeiffer's body double) rising to look at the Batsignal was a last minute decision by the studio. The original ending left her fate more ambiguous, but the studio didn't want the movie to have such a bleak ending, and they wanted the possibility of Catwoman showing up in later movies. This one scene apparently cost $250K to film, but it ended up being one of the most iconic moments in the franchise. Danny DeVito acted his heart out as The Penguin; he took what could have been a silly concept and turned it into something far more monstrous, grotesque, and tragic. 32:53 His final stand is one of my favorite scenes in any of the Batman movies. The Penguin rising out of the water, toxic waste pouring out of him, the slow walk to the umbrellas, and Batman turning around to face him as the music swells will be forever burned into my memory. It's a dying villain, fueled by rage, making one last, failed stand. They don't make movies like this anymore.

That's something I love about Burtons Batman films they embrace the crazy elements along with the wacky side of Gotham not scared of going all in on the gothic retro timeless art direction something Gotham City has kind of lost in the past few years even in the comics. We went from this to the more tame Nolan films with Begins being pretty good depiction of Gotham but Dark Knight and Rises basically looked like Chicago or New York, Gotham lost it's identity. Then we got the Arkham Games which looked amazing pulling from all the Batman films and media but mostly the Batman Animated Series. DCEU Gotham looked pretty basic, not that different visually to Metropolis which is a big problem. Joker looked like 1970s early 1980s New York but the time period carried the look of that film and finally The Batman finally went back to that Gothic look and feel of Gotham City being filmed in Older cities like Liverpool and Glasgow, places with Gothic architecture. So thankfully we've returned to a Gotham City that's not shared to stand out from your typical American city. Keaton's Batman actually gets carried on in the Batman 89 comics which follows the narrative for the third Burton Batman film that was never made. It's focused around Billy Dee Williams as Two Face and introduces Robin along with Catwoman playing a part. The next two films by Joel Schumacher were seen as the same continuity in the eyes of WB but most fans see those as being set in there own continuity beyond the Burton films, Batman 89 comics also pretend that the Joel movies never happened. The Joel Schumacher also have a very different depiction for Gotham City going for a more Dark Deco Neon Gotham City, most likely inspired by the Batman Animated Series 1930s Dark Deco look and feel but less dark and moody and more colourful pulling from the 1960s Batman TV show. So the overall tone is very different but I personally still love Batman Forever. I think Joel Schumacher would've suited a Superman film more as his depiction of Metropolis would've fit the city of Metropolis just make it brighter and embrace Art Deco and the retro futuristic 1950s feel. Could easily see a Metropolis like this co existing with Burtons Gotham City. So yeah all these films nail the production design even if they go a little too far in stuff like Batman & Robin I do really like how they embraced Gotham City as a fictional place rather than do what Nolan did and try and make the city as generic as possible like seen in Dark Knight and Dark Knight Rises.

The last glimpse of Catwoman at the end originally wasn't going to be there, but the studio mandated that they make it clear she had survived for potential sequels. They used a body double in the costume to film that last bit, apparently it was a pretty expensive last-minute addition.

This is one of Danny Elfman's most gorgeous scores. I particularly love "Selina Transforms" and "Death of a Penguin." Oddly, this movie also led to a dispute between Danny Elfman and director Tim Burton. (I think maybe Elfman was displeased with the way his score was mixed.) The rift was so bad that for Burton's next movie (Ed Wood), Burton asked someone else to write the score (Howard Shore), breaking his longtime collaborative relationship with Elfman. They thankfully made up, and collaborated again on Burton's next movie, "Mars Attacks."
@HobGungan
@HobGungan 11 месяцев назад
It wasn't this movie that caused the rift, it was Nightmare Before Christmas. Danny wanted to voice Jack singing AND speaking, but the studio wouldn't have it and Tim didn't back him up as much as he thought he should. You might be confusing it with the falling out Elfman had with Sam Raimi because Spider-Man 2 ended up reusing some tracks from the first film in place of new material because the studio preferred the selections used as temp track in a couple of scenes and, again, Elfman felt Raimi didn't fight hard enough against it (they too eventually made up and collaborated again) But I agree this is my favorite film score, and Selina Transforms is my favorite musical composition of all time. I genuinely think what I call The Christmas Trilogy (Edward Scissorhands, Batman Returns, and Nightmare Before Christmas) are the best works in both Burton's and Elfman's careers. Yes I know Henry Selick directed Nightmare and he did a fantastic job and should be recognized for it, but it's still very much Tim's baby.

Even kids were scared of Batman as some parents have said it was an attack on their childhood. Batman is the arbiter of justice in his unrelenting pursuit. Introducing Catwoman shows that even he is vulnerable to the wiles of such a woman.

Michelle Pfeiffer is my favourite Catwoma of all time. Several women played Catwoman on the '60s TV series - my favourite was Julie Newmar. One episode had Batman and Catwoman closing a door behind them and the voiceover saying something like "Batman cannot live by bread alone".

You should definitely checkout some episodes of Batman from the 60's before Batman(the movie) it was the only on-screen time that anyone saw Batman or the bad guys. Burton did a great job of incorporating 60's Batman into his vision. Seriously if you watch a few episodes for each of the 3 that you see in the 2 Burton movies you will see how they influenced his movies. Not sure which episode it is but one with the Joker takes place at a museum and he pants on the exhibits similar to the first movie.

This is an interesting one. Its definitley more of a Burton film than a Batman film even though its both. It was one of the first movies that absolutley terrified me as a kid. Because of that I have far more fond memories of Batman Forever and even Batman and Robin even though those movies were less well recieved. But all 3 are beneath the behemoth that Batman 1989 was and how much it affected me as a kid.

The biggest reason this is the best Catwoman is she has an actual personality. It's not just a random actress in a costume; Selena Kyle is actually crazy and broken, and the audience feels sorry for her because Michelle Pfeiffer is so good.

It was very surprising, how good Keaton’s Batman was when the film finally was released. Keaton had done a comedy called, ‘Mr. Mom’, prior to Batman, and many comic book fans, such as myself, were highly disappointed that Hollywood decided to green-light Keaton as the film’s Batman. We were wrong.

If you want to continue the Tim Burton rabbit hole, two movies I'd recommend checking out, if you haven't seen them already, are 'Pee-wee's Big Adventure' from 1985 (Paul Reubens, who plays Pee-wee cameos as Penguin's father), and 'Beetlejuice' from 1988 (the movie that helped Michael Keaton get the role of Batman).

The original comic book Penguin was a mobster who always dressed in tuxedos (which used to be called Penguin Suits). He had an overweight appearance and a slight waddle to his step - earning him the Penguin nickname The 60s Batman had him played by Burgess Meredith, who added the laugh to the character that sounded a bit bird like. They also gave him the trick umbrellas and started giving him penguin themed lairs and accoutrements. Burton went even farther in the 90s - which you see here Penguin in the show Gotham and the newest Batman movie with Pattinson put The Penguin back closer to his origins

Max Schreck was named after the actor who played the first Dracula in Nosferatu. NOT Shrek (different spelling). And Batman didn't reveal his identity to Vickie Vale. Alfred did. For me, the next two moviesdon't exist. They're really dumb and have more in common with the campy 60s Batman than the comics. Keaton remains my favorite Batman, as he is more of a man of mystery (remember the first movie where he took the film from Vickie) and as such, is a man of few words. So that when he does speak, you listen. Current films have eliminated the comic book feel and are too grounded. For example, Joker was never just a guy in face paint. RETURNS remains my favorite Bat-film to date. So it was great for me to see Keaton return to the role after 3 decades. He's still got it!

60s had THREE con screen cat women. the actress was rotated in and out of the roll. It was also an early example of changing a character's race. All 3 are supposed to be the same character too. this Catwoman was the 1st to have the cat resurrection and the whip. the look went over to the animated series and all the new versions Penguin was also in the 60s where in that he also runs for mayor Newer Penguins make him a friend of Bruce who goes down a darker path For future movies Riddler was in the 66 series Mr. Freeze was in the 66 series played by 3 different actors , but his tragic back story was created in the cartoon series Robi's origin is the same all around Two Face, Poison Ivey and Bane were each on live action for there 1st times Batgirl was created for the 66 series but had a very different back story

So, to answer your question, the Batman TV series from the sixties featured three Catwomen: Julie Newmar in the first two seasons, Eartha Kitt (the first black woman to play the role) in the third season, and Lee Meriwether in the movie that came out between the first and second seasons. So Michelle Pfeiffer was fourth (and so far, the only blonde live-action Catwoman). Fun fact: the subplot in this movie about the Penguin running for mayor was probably inspired by an episode of that show (Tim Burton watched it as a kid). Also, it's kind of appropriate that your knowledge of Catwoman came from the 2004 movie, since it obviously took some inspiration from this one. (I, too, was a fan of that movie when I was younger, though it was mostly because I had a crush on Halle Berry.) Anyway, I'm certainly glad you enjoyed Burton's two movies (Michael Keaton is also my favorite live action Batman), though I'd recommend you check out Batman Forever as well (it has more a lighthearted tone compared the previous films, but still feels like a continuation in my opinion).

I'll give best Joker to Heath Ledger, but Michael Keaton will forever be the best Batman. And OMG Michelle Pfeiffer, Anne Hathaway got nothing on her. Same with Danny DeVito, what a perfect portrayal of the Penguin. All these years later and all these characters are still the best ones, what makes Batman Returns so underrated and easily the best Batman flick together with The Dark Knight.

I think they did the Catwoman really well in this movie. It leaves you wondering if she was 'given' special powers by cats but you can also just perceive it as Selina surviving a traumatic event and she just reached her breaking point, mentally.

Fun fact about the nose bite scene and McDonald's. Back in the 90's as well as now McDonald's would release Happy Meal toys to correspond with big blockbuster movie releases. They would typically do that right as the movie releases so they don't get to see the movie before promoting it. Cut to the nose bite, over all violent nature of the movie and sexual innuendo and McDonald's was super pissed that they were promoting the movie to kids with Happy Meal toys.

This is one of many different origin stories for Selena, Kyle. The most definitive version of the character she’s a jewel, thief, professional gymnast, an acrobat using her impressive contortionist skills to break into pretty much anything. I motivations change from source to source, but among them, she steals to fund various animal rights organizations. But mostly it’s just so she gets a kick out of stealing the un-stealable.
