Please remember to keep all comments respectful (if you are a Christian, you represent Christ at all times) and on topic. Please, no foul language. Comments which do not follow these rules will be deleted. Critiques are fine, but they have to pertain specifically to the question discussed in the video- those who simply use comments as a platform will be blocked. Such is not a statement that you are a bad or dumb person, but that I don't think your participation will facilitate substantive discussion. I know some will take my enforcement to be too strict, uneven, or unfair- but ultimately it is what it is.
Thanks so much for watching.

9:30 Language is a relational whole. No word taken in absolute isolation has any meaning, but it’s meaning is only discovered through opposing distinct words to it (hence, we see both distinction and a unity based in the our apprehension of the meaning of multiple words that form a coherent whole, most basically in the form of a judgment). As Fr Dumitru Staniloae said somewhere, to say there is *merely* development of language and zero development of doctrine (properly understood) is impossible, because development of language ALWAYS brings about the revelation of genuinely new content, all of which can be coherently synthesized with the apostolic deposit of faith. Because language is a relational whole with a (theoretically) infinite capacity for growth, and since meaning is only discoverable relationally, we can understand “development of doctrine” as the creation (or discovering?) and unveiling of new words with precise meanings, that not only provide new information about the matters immediately relevant to it, but to the ENTIRETY of the faith due to the interconnectedness of each word, doctrine, etc. All words exist in the divine Word, so ultimately our use of language (specifically to speak about doctrinal matters, as you point out Florovsky says) is simply entering into the Mystery of Christ.

Very strong and concise. You're one of the few laymen that I would recommend to seekers. I enjoy your long live streams (Many Years! to Pug the dog) but they're not for everyone. Glad you're doing more like this.

Even though it is not canon scripture, 4th Maccabees answers this question. Not only is worship of the One God rational, it is the source of rationality and the ultimate expression of it.

3:30 Mystery is inexhaustible riches revealed in Christ, not merely something hidden. This does not contradict rationality or imply that we cannot formulate arguments for our “mystical theology” This definition of mystery lends itself quite naturally to St Gregory of Nyssa’s definition of heaven or theosis as an “ever-moving rest”. The ever moving rest is, perhaps, the clearest doctrine we can derive from our definition of “mystery,” as it is quite literally the experience of the mystery. “Ever-moving rest” is an antinomy for fallen rationality. It’s insurmountable, in fact. It can only be truly accepted through an act of faith in the Triune God that opens up a boundless horizon that overcomes all antinomies and paradoxes. Human rationality is limited by the fact that when it tries to enter the Mystery *by its own means* it can only run into antinomies that point to its own inherent limitations, i.e. it’s very structure implies it’s own ekstasis in faith.

Really great rate of speech here. It was all lucid. Some of your stuff has been like fire hose blast.

Whats that quote about theology without praxis being the theology of demons. This is the problem of what the western obsession with reason ended up devoid of the life of repentance and hesychia. Speculations ad infinitum.

Can you cite a westerner that explicitly or implicitly teaches theology without praxis?

"Speculations ad infinitum" meaning... what exactly? Reflection upon the faith and speculating in every new era is a necessity of theological life. If reflection never ceases then neither does speculation, and vice versa.

@@Crystal_Falcon I think the point that the commenter was probably making is not that they teach theology without Praxis, but rather that the theologians themselves are often just academics, and either do not have a thorough, spiritual life, and devotion, to Jesus, or do not have a spiritual life at all. Yet may still be looked to as some sort of Authority. If that’s not the point that the other comment or was making, I would certainly make that point.

@@GuitarJesse7 I disagree. I think the point the commenter was probably making was that they teach theology without praxis because he associates theology without praxis to “the problem” of why the West has an “obsession with reason”, ultimately destroying any meaningful spiritual life, apparently. Happy to be corrected by the commenter if I misunderstood him/her. Anyways, can you cite an official Western authority (a doctor of the Catholic Church, eminently recognized theologian, etc) that doesn’t have a “thorough spiritual life, devotion to Jesus, or do not have a spiritual life at all”?

@@GuitarJesse7 "the theologians themselves are often just academics" Well no, many academic theologians are also priests or pastors in whatever confession they belong to... but if they are not ordained or monastics, so what? There is nothing at all wrong with that, and academic theology is good. Theology that struggles with nuance and pushes boundaries by critical reflection is necessary. Without an intellectually rigorous and critical theology, all youll get is a theology of arrogant moralism, using flashy foreign language for concepts it reduces to vacuous apophatics, and ignorantly slinging meaningless rhetoric. " ... do not have a thorough, spiritual life, and devotion, to Jesus" Ah yes, the classic characteristic of academic Christian theologians, a lack of devotion to Jesus... what rubbish. And of course you have no way of judging these peoples spiritual lives as less "thorough" than yours. Do you actually mean that the academic must not be devoted to God as much as Elder Whosit because the academic might acknowledge errors in their tradition, or validity in other traditions, or adopt a view based on history or reason against authority, whereas the "spiritual" person who "is devoted to Jesus" is triumphalist about their tradition, decries all others as demonic, and never lets history or reason have any say when an authority is to be invoked (some council, or saint, or some elder somewhere, etc)? Please tell me it isnt so! "Yet may still be looked to as some sort of Authority" Yes, someone who has great academic knowledge on a subject of theology or Church history is an authority by their reliability or the strength of their arguments. Its a kind of authority based on reason, not the rejection of it. And actual learning on an issue does make someone more of an authority, in this sense, than some monk or whatever. And indeed, what use is an authority that claims to bind your reason but is manifestly false? The Orthodox mock Vatican 1's claims about the papacy, saying no one should bind their conscience to them but should instead study the history themselves. But then, on any number of other issues, despite Orthodoxy having no magisterium, academics in the Orthodox world are widely regarded as less Orthodox if not outright wicked for thinking and questioning on certain things. Hypocrisy at its finest, but perhaps one shouldnt use reason here...
