Our dream here in Northern Portugal is to be totally off-grid and in todays episode, we take a step back from our ultimate dream, to take a big step forward. We connect our primary water source, to the mains water system so that although our off-grid sources are starting to run dry, we won't have to move off the farm this autumn while we wait for the rain to replenish them.

Ouch! Poor John. First, a shoulder injury and now a nasty bruise. I'm glad there are no broken bones, though. Yall's boys going along together is absolutely adorable! How sweet when Crusoe sat down to scoot with Sawyer on the slope, and then Sawyer got up and started to try and walk it again. They are growing up so fast. Having videos of them growing up is priceless. Great job, guys, on the water! Great video, too, btw. I am looking forward to the next video. We have town water and large tanks. We have smaller tanks on every shed even the chicken house has a small tank on it. Water is so precious. We have a grey water system too. Our fruit trees and veggie beds are heavily mulched to make the water go as far as possible. Australian Summers can be very hot and dry too.Good luck

Tara instead of having that heavy contraption on your back for Sawyer, stick him a blanket on your back like they do in my home country, South Africa. Far lighter and more comfy, lol. Just had a thought, they probably do that in Zim as well, chances are you were carried around like that too.

You blow my mind with how you have created and work your land. In our modern times, so many just don’t have the practical skills to be self sufficient. You two just nail it! From providing your own water, food and fuel you have life skills that are centuries old but with a modern twist. You have such talent and knowledge of so many aspects of living off grid, I reckon in years to come you could run self sufficiency courses Tara with food preservation, cooking, vegetable and plant growing and John with everything else he does so well. You are just awesome.😊

Your neighbors are really the kindest people. And the municipal water system is also an example of using community resources. Self-sufficiency is great, but community is also vital, as is being flexible. And you and your neighbors are just demonstrating all of that again and again.

It is currently 0 degree celsius in Colorado! Brrrr! 🌨 It's coming! I think one of my best experiences all week is seeing Sawyer's expression when he looks up at you or John. It's part delight, part anticipation and part satisfaction with life. (I missed the teething thing). Caruso is becoming such a fabulous little man following behind his dad. Sorry about your water issues. That doesn't sound like fun at all! It's comforting to be on municipal water if it's necessary. Congratulations on solving another challenge! ❤❤❤❤

Old laundry basins make amazing outdoor vegetable washing stations! It would be especially nice with that attached washboard to set them on. Just have it drain to a tree or garden.

I just love watching little Crusoe taking things seriously and making as much physical effort as he can helping in every task mom or dad is in He is so cute. He’s going to be a great young man with lots of early gained skills one especially being a supportive team member and sometimes just walking off taking the lead to do whatever he wants to do. In Greece we saw chrome barrels on the roof that used the sun to heat the water . We never struggled for hot water ever ,seemed a nice eco lfriendly heating solution

I'm always blown away by your innovative ways of doing things needed for the farm. From water hookups to electricity, John can figure out anything that needs to be done and Tara brings him coffee and snacks too when needed. You make a great team and will carry on till it's all completed and hopefully without bruises and broken bones. This has been one of my favorite episodes! Such fun watching Sawyer increase his world and becoming so confident. Hello guys, another obstacle overcome, done with aplomb, the usual tackle it head on, John your plumbing skills have grown and now you're teaching Juao, beauty bruise there mate, make a pictorial record of its progress and despite no sleep you managed to make a vid and secure your water supply, the whole family is champion cheers!!!🥰😘💕👌👍💪👣actually that's the first time I've seen Crusoe in shoes for a long time now Sawyer is taking over the barefoot crusade🐔🐓🌳🌳

That bruise reminds me of when I slipped and fell on mud back in January. Thought I’d badly sprained my ankle until the bruise became quite horrendous! Turned out I’d broken my ankle in two places, had to have metal pins in to put it right and it’s still a little sore 9 months later! So please take care, these things happen in the blink of an eye and how awful it would be for you all if one of you was out of action for a good few weeks. But on a happier note - those boys, it actually brought a tear to my eye watching them together, Crusoe being so patient and kind to Sayer. What an adorable pair they are, in fact what a wonderful family. It’s a privilege to be allowed to follow your journey with all the trials and tribulations along the way. Thank you and may the rain gods keep your tanks overflowing! 🌧🌧🌧

YAY house water won't be a problem now.. even though it's a painful adjustment to being off off-grid. The boys look SO adorable together. Crusoe has the most incredible patiemce with Sawyer. Makes my heart happy. OH GOODNESS John!!! What a massive hematoma! Put some Arnica cream on it. It's all natural and will help with the pain, as well as make the bruise fade.

@@TheNewbys Yes, like Tammara says, Arnica Montana is great for bruising and pain. Many athletes use this product in order to heal quickly from their injuries.

Oh no! John , I got a bruise just like that this summer, as wide as my hand, at the top on my thigh; unfortunately when I slipped on unrinsed recently bleached steps, my hand went under me and I almost broke 2 fingers as well! But, my bruise didn’t hurt for more than a couple of days, so keep your chins up!😅😂 Also, I can’t tell you how magnificently sweet it is to hear Crusoe “ helping you carry the pipe”, while watching Sawyer in training to be third man in charge! How wonderful that you have such loving warm and supportive neighbors! You deserve them! Keep up the good work- you’re all always in my prayers!❤️❤️❤️❤️

This was awesome! Love the photos of the two boys walking together...so great that they'll be side by side growing up together! Referring to a previous episode. when you were talking about cork trees. I was in Portugal with my daughter 3 years ago and we visited a cork farm. They harvest the bark only every 9 years, mark the tree and leave them be for 9 years, then come back. It is the ultimate renewable resource! Joale (sp?) is so wonderful! I hope is is very successful in his life.

You are both such good problem solvers! I wish more people were aware, as you have become. of the importance of a reliable water source. Love watching your barefoot boys watch and absorb all the skills being used on the farm. They are so good at amusing themselves. It's a good skill that many children, today, don't have.

Remember if you’re using municipal water that any chemicals used absorbs into your skin. If you’re using this for shower and baths, get a filtration system.

Hey y'all, Soo great to see the water situation sorted for the future to supply the needs of the farm and family. I have to say i was just struck by the boys walking alone towards the end of the video one on the bike walking along the other bumping along dropping down and back up both moving along side by side. I said a prayer that they will avoid all the pitfalls of life and always be as close as they are today! Absolutely beautiful imagery! Thank you so much for this video today.....Steven

I bloody love the way you are raising your kids, All the ways you let them experience independent life and helping you will pay huge dividends I promise. They won't be afraid to try and fix or build etc.I go and help as back up now mine are grown, they always helped me, and I love it.

Have you guys considered wearing microphones when moving around the property talking to us? Would just make the sound more consistent and easier to listen to, particularly to hear whoever isn't holding the camera.

Ouch John that bruise looks very sore. It really does make sense to use on grid water so you have the security and reassurance, especially having little ones and being able to remain on the property, whilst you take time to figure out solutions. You will get there, but at least you have off grid watering around the property. Great plumbing job John x
