Baby Sawyer is so gorgeous. All of a sudden he is an active member of the team. The snake was a special treat! You might tell Crusoe that if he picks one up it will bite and that will hurt. He talks to them like he’s teaching them how to do whatever it is, he’s doing 😂 these boys are going to know how to do anything most dads don’t have the time to teach their children. Even though there are no poisonous snakes in your area, even common snakes can bite if their life is threatened.😮 It's good that John was closely watching over Crusoe when the snake slithered by him.😅 Another precaution may be to have the boys wear shoes or slippers outside in the summer. With two toddlers at your side, we see why some projects may take a bit longer than others. With all the lessons in nature, a snake has to come along! Great teaching Crusoe about the snake, John! Easy reminders: * Tools are safer than hands in places where snakes might hide in a garden. * Listen and watch for movement (Crusoe sure couldn’t miss that snake!) * Snakes hide under rocks and logs to stay cool, so watch where you step when gardening or hiking or in woods. * Protect feet :-) * Take a breath,and stay calm…just like John! * Always refer to local government authorities’ wildlife resources and medical advice to learn about snakes and such in your area, what types there are, and what to do if bitten. Snakes are fascinating and they are critical for keeping rodent populations down in many areas.

I have 3 year old boy, 4 year old girl, a 5 year old boy. Trying to get anything done is a monumental task. Even with both parents there. Good job dad!!! And good job mom for taking the time for your self. It's hard and more stressful then it seems! ❤❤❤

Hi John, Tara, Crusoe and Sawyer…..well I loved this! The chaos of the beginning with John and his boys trying to start the path was so great, Crusoe and his amazing ability to just be able to do exactly what is needed and Sawyer with his mud covered face…..all so lovely. As for the snake!……I was bitten by an adder when I was 7, here in the UK in Cornwall where I grew up! I sat on it in the long grass whilst playing hide and seek with my Dad and sister…..spent about 5 days in hospital then in 1967 ish! I’m pleased for your sakes there are no poisonous ones in your area! I’d be a nervous wreck lol! Can’t wait to see the finished path! Best wishes and ❤ Julie 😊

I remember growing up in a country town here in South Australia as a young teen in the 70's. We would go wandering out bush and a nearby rocky hill and collect scorpions, deadly snakes etc, never thought twice about it. But later on with my own youngsters I can only imagine how scary it would be as a parent with a snake situation. Well done on staying cool and explaing.

Portugal only have one snake that is poisonous, i remember 4 years ago a British boy with 10-year-old had to be rushed to hospital in a serious condition following a bite from the notorious ‘víbora cornuda’ the only venomous species of snake found in Portugal, the bite followed the boy’s attempts to touch the snake, which he spied during a walk with his father and older brother in Penela region. The last 30 years only a old man die from this snake because he dont go to the hospital right away and only one day after, his daughter said in the hospital that he thought was a wasp that bite him when he was cut brambles. We have scorpions in Portugal but they are not poisonous, but the sting hurt a lot. The animals that kill more in Portugal, are domestic dogs that attack ppl.

Also from Sth Aust and grew up in the then northern suburbs of Adelaide. The things we all got up to, without a care or worry. We were so free to do virtually anything at all. The suburbs my side of town stopped at Grand Junction Rd! So many many changes since then - cant do this, cant do that etc etc. All designed by the government. We are so regimented these days and its pathetic for these young children - no freedom at all!

@@susanpoland5919 Hi, me too! I was born in Adelaide in 1959 but we moved to Salisbury when I was about 4. We left the house at breakfast, only returning for food, ran wild, rode a pony for miles roundabout the fields, had adventures, crawled through grass without a thought about snakes, I even kept a redback spider in a jar as a "pet". My sister and I were such tomboys. Had the best fun under big skies. Sawyer and Crusoe are lucky to be allowed "off the leash" as much as they are without being nannied by overprotective parents. They will be able to learn by their mistakes and develop very useful life skills that seem to be missing in so many youngsters today. (Really hate spiders though even though the British ones can't hurt you......)

I have never laughed so much in all my life. John left with the babies and trying to build a path. Oh my goodness, the best thing I have seen on RU-vid. Crusoe feeding the hens compost and Sawyer playing in the dirt. I loved seeing John dunk Sawyer in the water tub, just so wonderful. Hahaha 😁 The words of the week John saying, " the boys have gone just a little bit feral, Crusoe is drinking out of the milk carton." ROTFL 😂 😅 Just so many magical moments to make precious memories. “Um bombomzhino” says Gabriel in the comments above!,,🥲🤩👍😃 Totally agreed. That sounds like Crusoe, alright. Parenting- a combination of fearlessness, patience, love and learning. All are copiously evident in THESE scenes! At the end, when both boys are sleeping - instead of letting out a huge sigh of relief… Dad says something positive about Crusoe ( Crusoe definitely had shown that he had a plan of his own for the precious grass but no problemo.) In Portugal there is a non-lethal poisonous snake, but which needs care in case of a bite, it is the horned viper (Vipera latastei). There are areas that have a higher density than others and I would say that the center and north of the country will be easier to find. By appearance, the snake that appears in the video is the horned viper. Biting cases are rare, but when it happens, it is best to remain calm, avoid moving so as not to spread the poison throughout the body and receive immediate assistance. Exceptionally, it can be life-threatening.

The stone! And then the first piece of grass... it's always a matter of testing out what works and what you can do. I'm glad you're teaching the boys to just look too. In this episode, Crusoe learned by doing. Example - too much sod and your barrow will tip over. Sawyer learned by watching. There's nothing like experiencing the world in a baby carrier and then getting dirty. John taught his boys about working, problem solving, having naps outside and all the time demonstrated the skill of having patience. Best line of the vlog. I laughed when Crusoe dumped hist wheel barrow of turf. He just went with it, like it was no big deal. A tribute to your parenting style, relaxed. What a pretty snake he found. I got sent home from school in fourth grade (about 10 years old) for wearing a California King snake draped around my neck for show and tell. My parent’s had a friend who was a naturalist and wrote for publications in the 1950’s. He would stay with us for a few days on his way to somewhere else and always had interesting animals with him. We had an injured owl, various snakes, a baby raccoon. My mother wasn’t fond of the snakes. One got loose and she found it in the grate on the gas stove. What is funny is that when Sawyer is beside Tara he looks more like John and when beside John he looks much more like Tara 😁. Another great video and watching the boys do their thing while Mum was away brought plenty of smiles and my own memories from back in the day 🙏👍

Sawyer and Crusoe were big help. 😂 So cute, “Dig it, Daddy. Dig it. Dig big hole.” and John gets an A+ for patience. Maybe Crusoe needs to know the snake will bite him if he touches it. Even non-poisonous can still cause nasty infection or allergic reaction, so says Johns Hopkins website.🧐Thanks for sharing💙

Hi Delisa, thanks so much for all the support and concern. We did tell him that snakes will bite and that will be very sore, we did it off camera. We definitely want to educate our boys enough to know what is safe to touch and what not. 🐍🌱🪨😁🏡❤️🇵🇹

Like most who commented I absolutely loved this episode. Sawyer seems to spring ahead with each episode trying to keep up with his big brother. John well done dealing with the snake. Cool calm and collected while teaching respect for creatures. I personally would have been running in the opposite direction.

Crusoe works and learns right along with his daddy. Sawyer was so darn cute with his dirty face. John when the delivery came you were so happy and excited it came across so well as we all became excited for you. I’m sure you were tired with digging the grass up and then planting it. looks like a horseshoe whip snake - cobra - ferradura. not venemous. In Thailand I covered the garden paths with pebbles; the noise they make when walking gives snakes time to disappear

I must say I was impressed with the way Dad handled the kids in mum's absence. Cool calm and collected. I was brought up in Australia on a island where we had deadly snakes. As kids we had to be responsible about where we walked and often wondered if you were worried about snakes as the boys seem so free. Good to learn the snakes are not venemous in Portugal. I now live as an ex-pat here in Italy and apart from the odd viper, it is a different story too. Blessings to your lovely little family. With all the insanity that is going on in the world at the moment it is very calming to see your caring, carefree way of life.

We always had snakes on the property where I grew up. They were harmless and half the fun was chasing them catching them and then letting them go. You grow up to have a real appreciation for all creates when you've grown up around them. Crusoe was so excited! John I really enjoyed watching you and the boys work on the path. I love that Sawyer watch's what's happening and then gets right in there. Can't wait to see how the path turns out.

It was so cute to watch B John with the boys. I was fine until the snake. I’m deathly afraid of them. John was having a little problem but it just took a minute and he got it figured out. Lucky Tara to have a break with her friend. But John, you do know that it was Crusoe running the show with Sawyer as back up don't you! I havent had such a good chuckle for a long time. It was great. A hint of desperation was definately present towards the end. Crusoe has no fear what so ever. Most kids would run from a shake. He just wants to pick them up and love them. 😂😂❤.
