Psychology research can be tricky, because brains are complicated. But does that mean it isn't a science?

Really interesting to see "self reporting" put on a par with measuring something concrete like endorphin levels. It'd be really interesting to see a video on the value and issues surrounding self reporting as a methodological tool for psychology.
@muffinbanana
@muffinbanana Год назад
I know it's been six years, but maybe it's still relevant to you: If you think about it, endorphin levels are not as concrete as they sound. Every person has an individual endorphin level inducing individually different physical and psychological reactions with individual cognitive assessments of those reactions, all of which are based on individually different prior experiences and development. In the end, the endorphin level itself only covers a part of what potentially constitutes the experience of happiness in a person, and can only suggest a tendency. A very useful tendency, yes, but still no psychophysiological measurements can lead to an objective, comprehensive assessment of happiness, as the concept of happiness was never solely based on physiology to begin with. Say, for example, someone choosing the number 7 on a 1-to-10 scale when being asked about how happy they feel, is just as concrete a measure, as it (unidimensionally) addresses an important aspect of happiness, just like endorphin level (unidimensionally) addresses a different one. Which of the possible aspects of happiness you choose to assess depends on, like Hank said, the study-specific reasons and desired type of data. This food for thought is not as helpful and cool as a scishow video by far, but might be interesting nonetheless. :)

You are clueless as to the issues in play. A likert scale is as arbitrary a measuring instrument as ever has been adopted by a discipline(in this case -- a discipline consumed with the desire to be accepted as science). The "numbers" on a Likert scale have no interval or ratio properties (as expect of a real science). They are at best ordinal (more likely nominal). You cannot differentiate theoretic claims based on ordinality. More, comparing subjective interpretation of symbols (Likert symbols are numeric in name only) with consensually agreed on physical measures (e.g., the objective number of times variable X is observced) is a fool's task. More, Likert values have no numeric meaning. If I rate myself 5 on a happiness scale (sic), and rate yourself 5, is it logically justified to say we experience the same subjective feeling of happiness? No! More (good grief) -- you conflate individual variation with between-participant variability. Please tell me you do not have an advanced degree (we already credential too many way beyond their capabilities). @@muffinbanana

@@stanleyklein524 no, that's about the standard for an MSc in Psych. The whole replication crisis spectacle, showed that it is almost universal standard - we were fine with measurement being defined as "assigning numbers to things" (true story) and while now some people in the field are a bit more aware, my sense is that not much has changed in understanding (one can extrapolate from how we address said crisis).

As a psychology major, I'll drop my two cents here. In my university, it's under the School of Social Sciences. The hardest part about answering the question "Is Psychology A Science?" is that there are numerous approaches to psychology - all of which are entirely different from each other. For instance, Psychodynamics (Freud, Adler, etc.) barely has any empirical evidence let alone scientific explanations; it is more philosophical in nature. Cognitive and Behaviorist (Skinner, Bandura, etc.) approaches are still made up of abstract concepts but are based on experimentation and observed empirical evidence. Physiological Psychology (behavioral neuroscience), is probably the most scientific you could get with psychology; it studies emotions, intelligence, abilities, internal states, etc. in the lens of the nervous system. In my opinion, it is a social science, but is a collection of scientific and philosophical concepts, and there's nothing wrong with that.

I agree. It doesn’t mean psychology isn’t scientific it’s just not a science. I think the reason for this debate is people see “science” as this god like existence and glorify it. I mean maths isn’t a science either.

Science, from the Latin word "Scientia" which means knowledge. Knowledge is not only about using laboratory settings and experiments but to search for information. Just like applied science, computer science, political science, health science, formal science, behavioral science, biological/life science, physical science, earth science, social science... We all need knowledge and Natural Sciences aren't the only ones that provide it.

@@user-np3li4pl3i no. maths and its calculations are objective. They are testable and empirical by experimental support. But psychology is something like 50% science and 50% untestable hypothesis. Most of its empirical stuffs adapted are actually generalization, which may or mayn't be true.

There is a huge problem with it, if you're advocating chemical treatment on "philosophical" and theoretical basis - the only valid approach in that case is with a comprehensive biological understanding of the neurological/behavioral correlation - which we are not fully with, and instead, industry is taught to exploit what we don't know, instead of building upon what we do. You should find the answer to the question posed by the title in the other comment I just posted. It may inspire you plural.

At the 1:46 point, I'm pausing to emphasize this point. A _testable_ hypothesis means a hypothesis that is *verifiable if true* _and_ *falsifiable if false.* This means that you have to be able to brainstorm, beforehand, about which observable manifestations should exist in _both_ cases, and then you should be able to check for both, and if _both_ are observable, then your conclusions are not useful.

Idk, I'm not entirely convinced...From all the psych that I've taken, much of the data comes from some sort of self-reporting system, like having people rate an experience or say how something made them feel. Neuroscience, yes, obvious, observable science. But psych? Seems more like a "hard" social science to me. The whole idea of social science *is* applying the scientific method/reasoning to other, usually more abstract fields, which sounds suspiciously like a description of trying to scientifically study the mind. I don't think that makes it any lesser than a more definitive science like neuro, just different. Heck, I'm a pre-med social science major for crying out loud! I still think it's a social science, but I'm willing to be convinced if/when later videos give me that data to support the claim.

Savannah I agree with one of the others who answered. Psychology isn't a science, it's an art, and as such is not bounded by the moral constraints that bind the true sciences. Axiom: When satan fell from heaven he dragged with him one third of divine beings. Identity: Sigismund Schlomo Freud. When things don't go the way psychologists want they use determination and force to impose their ideas on the victim, rather than patiently waiting to learn. Being shackled in this retardation is enough, but it is very hard to see. Wait patiently and you may come to understand the truth about the cursed kingdom of psychoanalysis.

Graham Ford Your reply is located in the mundane sphere we call “our society”. There are higher spheres, and ways of being prevented from practicing other than being struck off by a controlling body. If human conduct was morally perfect there would be no suffering or disease in the world. Everyone else being imperfect doesn’t make the psychologist better. It must be relatively easy to satisfy governing bodies in “our society”, since it was certainly achieved by Fermi and co. at the Manhattan Project, not to mention the dons at Harvard who invented napalm: two innovations without a morally justifiable use. Any practice that plays on others’ weaknesses or unpreparedness is at best an art, like that of the door to door salesman or card sharp. From your tone, I would surmise that you occupy a role in society as a scientist (or possibly a psychologist). If psychology is a science you should be able to quite easily show the error in one who opposes you; conversely if it is an art whatever tricks you could try would be seen by the perceptive. My view is that psychology is just what the founders of true science called sophistry: they harm themselves (and others) but cannot admit the connection between the suffering and their sinister deeds. Some of them might even try to play on the weakness of society in order to bring about the end of morally superior people by the exertion of force. Power without wisdom has never been a blessing.

I would argue that there are a few different ways you can study psychology, based on the courses you choose and the career you pursue, that would make it maybe more or less of a hard science vs. a social science. However, all of it is still science. It's nice to hear the validation from someone else haha!

If you are gonna be so keen in critiquing atleast be specific which field and don’t generalize. Very simple. Also I’ve read te article you were always citing. Their conclusion to the results was that those psychological fields need to revamp their research procedures and to reconceptualize, but here you are exagerating it and claiming that they did debunk the fields 100%. If anything, your overgeneralizing may prove you to be the third grader between us.

The other two options are just... risible.

It's hilarious to me that this is a 5 minute video because I literally had an entire class on this question. Though to be fair, we went super in-depth and back to basics, having to define "what is science" and also "what is psychology". Speaking of which, "what is psychology" would be a super interesting topic for a video. And even after however many hours, the conclusion we mostly came to was a shrug and a "kind of" (mostly due to the difficulty of defining what "psychology" is in a way that separates it from any of the other scientific disciplines).

You are going to find that the current state of psychology is less "science" based than you think. Research and experimentation are rarely replicated. Conclusions are spurious statements that loosely relate to the evidence provided in the research. The field is riddled with low effort meta-analysis based on research done decades ago. For a field that requires the utmost rigor in research and repetition of these experiments to find the current state of our knowledge of human behavior, it is lacking considerably. I wish most research papers state what they do know and what they don't know. To often then not, they makes claims about what they don't know yet.

As a person clinically diagnosed with bipolar in 2010 thank you for making this channel. I had a discussion just the other day on very similar subjects with a person who belongs to a certain religious group who does not believe in psychology at all and thinks it is a scam. She was disappointed about the medication prescribed by my doctor and thought it was wrong that my doctor recommended I apply for disability. Well this threw me into a full blown panic attack and I tried my best to explain to her that while I respect her religious views I am going to do what I think is best for me. I have a Bachelors degree in Veterinary Technology and anatomy is my favorite subject and I explained to her that when I assist in surgery and I can see how things work I always feel better, the same goes for Psychology. I take an anti-seizure medication that treats my Bipolar by balancing out the same chemicals it balances out to stop seizures. It's not made up science, it is all in the chemicals. Also many people with Bipolar have a smaller or damaged pre-frontal cortex which is where emotions are processed so it makes sense. She blew me off asking for more proof and gave me a pamphlet to read. She is lucky I'm somewhat stable and on meds, if she had tried this on someone else something bad cold have happened. She is somewhat of a friend of mine and I always try to respect other people's views but she just wouldn't stop. I just keep telling myself that things will be ok. Science will prevail! I asked what psychology is and he said, "Observing patients' reactions to certain situations so you can trick them into doing what you want." I said religion meant observing the universe so that you can find out how it works, where it came from and where it is going; but he said that this was science. Since he'd excluded himself from a situation that entails a consequence (good or bad) for every act, he'd inadvertently excluded psychology from the realm of science. Psychology can't gain the status of a science while psychologists hold tenets like, "I don't count;" or, "Equations such as x^2+1=0 are unsolvable.

DarkBoy 141 If God is defined as the source (creator) of the universe, as Leibniz had it, then it is axiomatic that He did it and this requires no further proof. How He did it would become the subject of one's own considerations. Psychologists are cynically dismissive of religion and so miss the precept that effort comes before result. Any fool can see that Noah's ark is scientifically impossible, but they would rather use this as a reason to disregard the moral inconvenience of religion than do the hard work of sitting down and working out an interpretation that is both possible and highly likely. Quite a few problems in mathematics are only solved on the basis of probability, but if you insist on 0.999 as your probability goal you are all but dealing in fact. Seen from this point of view, none of the real sciences contradict religion; a little effort can reconcile every aspect of religion with modern discoveries. God wouldn't be much of a friend or benefactor if He insisted we should put the blood of a sacrificial lamb on the front door during an epidemic when a modern vaccine exists. In the scientific age, God can be the light that guides the thinking and research of the innovators. Psychologists are welcome to keep their immoral darkness.

@@prairiewolfo9274 First of all,not all psychologists think like this. Second,no science doesnt necessarily contradict the god concept,but it does contradict the bible,logical thinking contradicts the bible.The fact that you have to perform mental gymnastics to make the bible work in the modern age,is evidence to suggest it wasnt divinely inspired.You can of course believe in any god you like and be a scientists,if your research stands up to scrutiny,good job and glad to have you.I just dont see why i should be a deist since a deistic god cannot be proven and i have no requirement to believe it,unlike newtonian phyisics,special relativity,evolution etc.

I think one of the strongest (though incomplete) counter-arguments to psychological study as a science is that, the more you try and create a controlled and replicable environment in which to perform the experiments, the more people will change their behavior due to the extreme isolation or unusual circumstances they've been placed in. If you put a person in a sound-proof tank with no outside influences they're going to be weirded out and tune their behavior heavily until they are outside and more at ease. But once they are back in the outside world, then they are once against susceptible to all manner of distractions which will fudge the results. That being said, I don't think that means psychology isn't a science. I just think it means we don't yet have biometrics that are powerful enough (and discrete enough) to truly observe people like that in a rigorous manner. The science exists, it's just all that harder to reach.

And like engineering, there's a lot more "creating solutions to problems" than "discovering truths about the natural world".

As somebody going into computer science, I don't consider it a science. Personally I see it as applied math. Computer science is fundamentally based upon branches of mathematics such as discrete math, linear algebra, boolean algebra, graph theory, combinatorics, and others. Whereas for engineering, it's essentially an applied science because it uses our knowledge in physics, chemistry, and biology to solve problems.

I would say psychology is a combination of philosophy and science. I also think psychology is limited because there are many variables in the brain that we cannot get access to. They are hidden and cannot undergo the scientific method in order to formulate a justified conclusion like the science of physics, chemistry, or biology. What is more, it can sometimes lead to pseudoscience much easier than the 3 branches of science that I mentioned above. Perhaps, as science gets narrowed down to small branches, it would be that the chances to explain a natural phenomenon through scientific approach seems to be analyzed more easily than to only use a branch of science as a whole for the same reason.
