Is Red Bull Formula 1 Academy Really That Bad?

The Red Bull Driver Academy has garnered a bit of a reputation over the years. Not a great one.
Sure it has produced some top drivers, your Sebastian Vettel's, Max Verstappen's, Daniel Ricciardo's. But they've been equally good at brutally dropping drivers if they're not deemed good enough.
So today I wanted to look at the system, and give my thoughts on whether it's really all that bad. With some help from a few RU-vid content creator friends of mine too.

Excluding the shortfalls in the driver management in the Red Bull team, the RB Academy is probably the best there is. We wouldn't have seen Seb, Max, Sainz, and Ricciardo the way we know them if it wasn't for RB. Giving opportunities to scores of youngsters and making their pathway to F1 a bit easier? I'd take that any day.

Financially supporting drivers who show the most promise. That's the best way of keeping the sport honest, in terms of a meritocracy. And the best way of limiting how many seats will get nabbed by pay drivers.

@@TommoMcCluskey Exactly!!! The academy itself is’nt bad. The thing they have to improve is how they manage the talent. The RBA does help teams recognise the talent of drivers not in any of the red bull teams. So your statement is something That almost everyone will agree with.

Before watching the video I say RB young driver program is absolutely good an beneficial to both F1 and RB drivers. Drivers lile Albon and Kvyat wouldn't have gotten a shot in F1 without RB. And even after RB drivers leave F1, RB still support them by giving them drives in other series(Albon) or having them in promotional events like David Coulthard.

If you'd look at the Red Bull Academy with the attitude that "so many drivers failed", nearly all youth academies from football clubs would be a complete failure. Most of the young talents in those academies will fail at some point during their years in the academy or after they've reached the first team.
@Sam-te9sj
@Sam-te9sj 3 года назад
I think the main difference there is that football academies develop the talent they have themselves, not every kid can be nurtured to a high level. The RedBull Academy does not develop drivers. Red Bull sign drivers based on the chance of them being a possible (F1) champion. It could be described as a sponsorship program instead of an academy if anything
@TommoMcCluskey

Great video Tommo, Callan's insight in particular was really interesting. RB have shown the most amount of commitment to the young driver program out of any teams. This is a cut throat and ruthless sport, you know what you've signed up for if you join the RB program. Its sink or swim. Its unfair and disingenuous to say that RB ruined a driver's career when they were the ones to give him that opportunity in the first place, this is competitive sport and its survival of the fittest.
@TommoMcCluskey
@TommoMcCluskey 3 года назад

@@TommoMcCluskey Agreed, RB aren't too big on the nurturing side of driver development. Its interesting to see how Mercedes have guided Ocon and Russell from such a young age and molded them into great drivers. That's not the case at Red Bull. They very much have the "diamonds are made under pressure" approach. But if they don't get what they're looking for, you're left to fend for yourself. Although of course, as you mentioned in the video, just cause the F1 dream didn't work doesn't mean a driver can't have a very successful career in motorsport and having the backing of the RB name certainly helps with that.

I think a lot of people miss out when saying "oh the RBDA ruined so many careers of so many young talents with so much potential", when in reality, this drivers probably just had the chance to be there because of RedBull's backing. Think about Alex Albon himself, when around 2012 he was dropped from the program because he wasn't performing and two years later he was picked up by the same program. Can we really assume, whatever talent Alex got at that time, that he would be able to climb up all these steps into F1 if Red Bull didn't pick him up again? Very unlikely. Thousands and thousands of promising young drivers have to back out of the dream of becoming an F1 driver because of the lack of sponsorship and backing, and Red Bull is there to prevent that as much as they can. And yes, they slaughter them in the same speed that they bring them up, but ask a Alex Albon, a Kvyat, a Bourdais, if they had the chance to go back to the past and prevent themselves from going into the Red Bull Academy and experiencing all that pressure and expectation that they had, to have a chance to be picked up by another academy. I don't think they would. Because they had the chance, they took it, they lived it, it hasn't gone right, but it's still SO MUCH BETTER than not having the shot at all. Because if they hadn't, they probably wouldn't get even close to the success and maybe money they have today, to live a better life for himself and his parents. A bit of a ramble, sorry for that, but it's just that it's easy to throw hatred at the RBDA for "ruining" these careers, and not to look at how much they did to these guys. It's like managing a store from a huge company in your country. You have to do your job well, because it's a high risk job, and envolves big money in it, and if you don't do you job right, they'll take you out. That's just life.

And the fact that they are involved in so many different motorsport categories and leagues means that their drivers have many different pathways they can follow career wise. But on the other hand, I feel like it's way too critical and way too harsh on its drivers at the highest level (2nd Red Bull seat). The only driver that has been unfairly treated was Gasly in my opinion, everyone else was given at least a full season to prove their worth in the Red Bull car and I think a season's worth of time is more than enough for any driver to start making strides. I mean I don't think Red Bull should expect their driver's to knock it out of the park from the get-go and clearly they didn't as they did give everyone except Gasly at least a season in the Red Bull car. I think they were a bit impatient with Gasly but then again, Gasly was without any confidence in that car and I think keeping him in that car would have only made things even worse. What they did was right at the time but I think should give Gasly at least another chance at the Red Bull car to see if he has learned from his mistakes and has overcome his deficiencies from the last time because I think he deserves a second chance or rather has earned that second chance because of his performances after the terrible Red Bull stint. Now I know other talents like Vergne didn't even get a chance at Red Bull but I think that is a problem of the sport given the lack of cars on the grid and how competitive the fight for a seat in F1 is. That is a problem that the sport as a collective has to fix.
@sergioccs74
@sergioccs74 3 года назад
I don't think Gasly will have another chance unless he makes an stellar, like out of this world performance this year like winning another GP or something. What I think most people are not seeing is that Horner (or perhaps Max, or perhaps the team) hated to work with Gasly, the poor performance was there but also the way he was demoted, how quick it happened and many subsequent interviews later just shows they don't want Gasly in the team for one reason or another.

@awijaya2116 3 года назад
I think the reason why the RB academy is bashed so much is that they’ve promoted so many drivers into F1, especially compared to the other F1 driver academies. In another world we’d be bashing RB for not giving their junior drivers a chance, and sticking with the same ‘mediocre’ driver year on year. Just look at the amount of bitching & moaning about Russell not being given Bottas’ seat. ‘Why isn’t Tsunoda/Lawson being promoted into AlphaTauri over so and so who’s been there for the last 2 seasons?’ Scarcity is the real issue. Every year, we get 2-3 Formula 2 drivers who are good enough to be promoted into F1. F1 driver careers can last well into their 30s - meaning the drivers can expect to hold a seat for 10+ years. It just doesn’t work out, mathematically. Inevitably you’re gonna have so much spare talent lying around that you can try and discard drivers as you please. They can afford to use the sink or swim strategy, since they have 4 of the 20 coveted F1 seats, and are one of 2-3 teams that can actually give you a title winning car in the last decade (meaning RB has even more leverage). The word ‘academy’ also has connotations of sports academies, like in football. But there are 5 ‘world class’ football leagues, each with 20ish teams, each with seasonal squads number in the dozens (21+). There is only one ‘top’ racing championship for open wheelers. Indycar doesn’t have the same prestige that F1 does, especially for non-american drivers. And there’s only 20 spots there. I don’t think we can decry Red Bull for anything more than being ruthless. And that’s probably not something that Helmut Marko or Christian Horner sees as a bad thing.

The thing is you can't do a formula red bull with all redbull academy drivers, so some guys will be out like it or not, even more with pay drivers, they take more seats out of the already small amount of seats on f1, so just the fact that half of the grid if you don't count the pay drivers are red bull or ex red bull drivers should say enough.

I think the recent "failures" of Red Bull Juniors (Gasly, Albon, Kyvat) have been largely down to media pressure too. Like the fans at home, F1 media are waiting for someone to put a dent in Merc dominance, so they have a big story to tell. All this added media pressure on someone so young and inexperienced is going to overwhelm them. I remember a pre-race interview with Alex last year where the interviewer told him "You're driving for your Red Bull career" and his reply was like "Woah, okay....". So its a combination of too early, too soon, high expectations from Dr Marko and the like, but more so, media pressure to desperately wish to see Red Bull back on top, that has contributed to the recent "failures". Alex was definitely a case of "too much, too soon". Promoting a rookie into a race-winning F1 team hungry for a championship, after a few decent results, not the best idea. That said, it is good that Red Bull give young talent the opportunity to prove themselves and look at Gasly and Sainz, both have smashed it upon "parting ways" with RB.

I disagree with the lady at the end ( Keira ). The academy is a massive success. They get into F1. Then it's up to them to decide their fate by driving well. Yes they may sometimes favour one driver more. But that's just the reality. This sport is tough. It's sink or swim. Just drive your best and do a good job and they'll soon favour you two. Obviously a team won't put as much focus on you if their other driver isn't doing as good. It's just the reality, do well and you won't have a problem. If you can't, tough luck, but atleast you have a motorsport career now and you are known. Idk how she can hate Redbull's academy but me a fan of Gasly. Cause the reality is, if Redbull didn't bring him up. You'd never know of him and thus wouldn't even be a fan. Yes RB's Academy ain't perfect. But it's still been a huge success. And hasn't really ruined anyone's career. They've got jobs in other areas or can now do something else with that experience. Look at Alex, he still is a reserve driver and gets to drive DTM. Even though he kinda failed in F1, he still had a job. And he's earning money in his pocket. So many poor kids who like racing will never get such a luxury and may end up living in poverty. All the redbull drivers, even guys like Alex, Kvyat, Hartley and Gasly. Their careers aren't over. They still making money. They are known. Some kids struggle to buy bread to survive. So in my opinion, they are fortunate and no one can say Redbull's Academy failed them. Maybe they didn't make them the next Vestappen or Vettel. But at least their life is set So to me, Redbull's Academy is still the best! :)

I'm all for it - I think its been perfectly reasonable at dropping drivers that aren't good enough. People need to remember this is a massively cutthroat business, and always has been. They fund extensively throughout drivers careers, and have probably bought more drivers (talent?) into the sport than any other academy. They give the drivers everything they need, and they expect everything back. They haven't backed them to become an also-ran and hold them in a seat for sympathy - it's a business, so they have to see return on investment. It's hard when they get rid off someone, yes - but thats not Red Bull's problem, thats the drivers. Not every u18's makes it into the first team in football, and we don't worry so much about that.

One great thing about the academy is that drivers know that if they do well, they will be rewarded and they don't need to worry so much about the money and the uncertainty of the future (if they're confident and doing well of course). I imagine it's hugely helpful for their mindset towards racing in lower formulas/junior team, and allows them to 100% focus on their current racing. The system gives the potential for significant (and quick) growth and separates the true WDC potentials from career mid-fielders, even if it is pretty cut-throat, but it's evidently not for everyone. It's a harsh stick and a massive carrot, and I think that's why you get a select crop of talented drivers *and* a lot of 'failures'
@Deevy8_

I think they do an amazing job of evaluating talent. They’re just too cutthroat with their drivers and give up on them so easy. Just look at Da Costa, JEV, Buemi and Sainz. 3 Formula E champions and a current Ferrari driver. All of them didn’t even get a chance to drive with the Senior Team. Not to mention a talent like Alguersauri who had 31 points in just 46 starts with Toro Rosso.

I think generally the Red Bull programme is great. Having two seats in F1 exclusively for their young drivers provides Red Bull junior drivers a great chance of a shot in F1 if they show they are good enough in junior categories. Then it's about whether or not they are good enough in F1 itself to either move to Red Bull or move to another team before someone with more potential pushes them out of an AlphaTauri seat. And usually there are a lot of other guys in the pipeline, although less so at the start of 2019 and 2020. Maybe they could put more resources into mentally supporting their drivers who are good enough to get into F1, but maybe they already do and the pressure of F1 is just hard for anyone who isn't a Hamilton/Verstappen level driver. I think Gasly was demoted from Red Bull because he wasn't doing great and he was a bad cultural fit with the team. The swap with Albon was done to see if he could do any better and he did in 2019. Then Gasly did very well in late 2019 and 2020 with AlphaTauri, and ultimately is a bigger prospect than Albon (far better junior career and better average F1 performance), hence it made sense to keep a driver doing well for AlphaTauri given there weren't two big prospects to bring in for 2021 (there was only one - Tsunoda). Albon was kept at Red Bull for 2020 and not replaced throughout it because there was nobody in the Red Bull programme who necessarily would have done a better job then. Then Albon was dropped from F1 altogether for 2021 because Verstappen, Perez (they decided they would consider going outside the RB programme), Gasly and Tsunoda are all better/potential to be better F1 drivers than Albon. Albon's junior career was not amazing. He had a shot in F1 but ultimately at the end of 2020 there were those four guys ahead of him whom Red Bull could use. It's about performance and his performances were not better than others vying for an F1 seat. The same goes for the other Red Bull programme guys who came and went. Albon was just there at the right time to get a chance at Red Bull Racing itself that he didn't take.

Football for example Ajax is a prime example. World Wide praise for the Academy... But how many of every youth team within Ajax, reach the pro's? Very, very few. Its not that simple aye and how much "academy" are these racing academies? Or is it more "better enty into the sports" then a true Academy where you learn the craft? I dont know how that works within RB Edit: should've watched the full video before that last line :P lol

Ferrari and Renault have many juniors that never gets the chance, many of the Red Bull juniors do atleast get a shot at Alpha Tauri (Toro Rosso) and some at Red Bull. F1 is the pinnacle of motorsport, you have to perform no matter what. Kvyat, Gasly and Albon didn't do it. It's up to them, as the same time - the 2nd car seems cursed. But the likes of Lundgaard, Zhou, Shwartzman, etc. might never even get the chance. With that said, I like the RB program. It has given us Vettel, Ricciardo, Verstappen.
@Tekkas_GG

how can she say that RB ruined so many carreers. Without RB, they might have never even have gotten a shot at F1. Kvyat is going fine at Alpine (still has a carreer in F1), Pierre Gasly is still an F1 driver and doing really good, And albon still has a carreer in another race class and still has a role in F1 for RedBull. To me, RB has given them loads of exposure and that makes it attractive for other teams (from F1 or other motorsports) to offer them a contract. Hell, if Albon hasn't been called up for F1, he went to F-E and who knows where he would have ended up then, probably not still attached to RB at all. They never ruined any carreer that had 'so much potential'. If you're given the shot as a driver, you better take it because it might be the only shot you get. (except if you're kvyat, RB has given him multiple chances. at 2 different teams) Normally, if you're out of a team, you're out of F1. At RedBull, if you're out of the team, you might still get a shot in AlphaTauri. which wouldn't be the case at other manufacturers. opinions.

If u are a young driver who wants to drive a F1car, u want ur other competitors to crumble under pressure so that the chances fall to u. For Renault, Mercedes, Mclaren, Ferrari, u rarely get chances to drive in F1car. But for Redbull, if a guy in front of u crumbles, than u know u will most likely get a chance to drive in Alphatauri and one day Redbull. It is up to you if you can grab that oppertunity and show that u are an amazing driver. There are so many young drivers in the world, and teams in F1 doesn't have time to wait for u when there is potentially another Leclerc or Verstappen behind the line who will perform immediately in the car.

I feel like the RedBull driver academy has done its job of finding young talent that are future stars. However, the job of both the RedBull Motorsport programmes and the junior academy to nurture and help the drivers grow has not been met. This leads to bringing so many talents to F1 and motorsports in general, but often cutting and ruining the careers of many. Edit: I wrote this before finishing the video, and I should note that what I described here that they have failed at is something that other junior academies appear to be doing, being a development program as well as talent finder. The RedBull junior programme is then not succeeding in its task very often, since it is bringing drivers to the top tier of Motorsport that aren’t at the level that the RedBull F1 team expects. There seems to be a disconnect between the two.
