The fact that you have an original clutch at 600k+ is a testament to your driving ability and also points at a lot of highway driving. The same car with a larger displacement engine is still, on average, a design with greater longevity. The turbo / smaller displacement design still creates more engine wear-and-tear than a larger displacement engine naturally aspirated. I don't think anyone is saying new Hondas are not reliable, however.

The problem is that the car CAN be reliable if you make sure to warm up the engine properly before you drive off, make sure to let the turbo cool down after a hard drive, change the oil on shorter intervals than previously recommended, and get the valves walnut blasted every 30k miles or so to clear the inevitable carbon build up. See the problem here is that you shouldn’t have to do all of this to maintain what’s presumably an economy car meant for everyday driving. This isn’t a performance car, you shouldn’t have to be this careful and aware when you purchase a vehicle of this category. The non turbo counterparts like your Toyota Corolla’s, Camry’s, Mazda 3’s and 6’s (non turbos) have none of these issues. No need to walnut blast with port side injection, no need to wait for the turbo to cooldown after a hard drive before shutting off the vehicle, no need to worry about a bit of excessive idling since they don’t have turbos, no need to worry about the car not being warm enough to prevent oil dilution, and no need to worry about oil dilution in the first place. If you look around on forums and places like reddit, you’ll find one other person who recently has achieved 300k+ miles on his 2023 civic sport touring 1.5t and this is indicative of the possible reliability in special cases but you’ll also find the MASSES of people who had to replace motors before they even hit 30k miles, bending rods, all of this due to oil dilution. Some people with blown turbos as well. At the end of the day, it’s another case of “i haven’t had any problems so it must be blown out of proportion by the majority of the consumer base who own these vehicles”. We can pretend that these 1.5t’s are as reliable as your NA Corolla/Mazda counterparts but 90% of the people who own these and are active in the Honda community will tell you otherwise.

I am a mechanic and this is a unicorn. They blow head gaskets. I know someone with 300k on a Chrysler 200. I still wouldn't recommend anyone to buy them LOL

The 1.5T Accord is way less reliable . The 1.5T on the Accord is pushed way more hard than the Civic . About 80 percent of 1.5T head gasket and fuel ejectors failures are Accords. I own the car and I am hoping not to get the issues for a while .

I had a 1.4L turbo in a Chevy Cruze that did fine up to 148,000 miles when it got totaled. Original clutch and turbo with no engine work. I’ve heard of transmission problems with automatics but that car was dead reliable in spite of a lot of short trips to work (I have a very short commute). So I would hope a Honda would be at least as good.

Great vid, Scotty paints himself in a box by the way that he stated his argument. Ur malicious maintenance routine and the fact that those are almost all hwy miles and you don't bang on ur car is a testament to the longeviy of ur individual car. Being a manual helps a ton too. Scotty should've stated that it decreases the chances of it's longevity vs saying, "IT WONT LAST"!!

Scotty isn't necessarily wrong about smaller engines not lasting as long because they do need to work harder in order to achieve the same amount of work of a bigger engine causing more wear on the smaller engine. Just like a I4 will never really be able to replicate a v6 you and will have to work harder even though the smaller engine has more torque or HP. Finally since you mostly did highway miles and your turbo was barley used and was almost never in boost your engine didn't take as much stress than it would in city driving where your turbo may kick in more to get you off the line faster.

Scottie was talking in relative terms. Everything else being equal (maintenance, 4 cylinder, same engine displacement) a turbo is less reliable than a standard aspirated engine.

I didn’t hear this mentioned in the video, but did yours ever need the timing chain replaced? And do you know about the reliability of the CVTs of this gen versus the manual? My 2013 Civic with the R18 was at 288,000 when I traded it in…regular maintenance and oil changes at the dealership

I know that the oil & coolant is used to cool the turbo. In my 2020 Civic Si, I always drive very conservatively when I get near my destination & even then after parking I let the motor idle for about 25-30 seconds to cool the turbo further. I use the new 0w-16 oil & change the oil personally 4 times a year which usually works out to 5k miles or less. I also changed the manual tranny oil at 30K miles. I have 2 questions for you: #1 - do you idle the motor.turbo down at all & #2 - have you experienced any carbon build-up on the valves or in the motor since these motors are GDI? Thanks in advance!

My 2019 Si makes shy of 300hp thanks to mods and ethanol. Still running stock turbo going on 80kmi without issue outside of clutch and headstuds. I’m pretty happy with mine.

zero problem on the 1.5L turbo honda civic sport after 75K mile. smooth like new. changed oil every 5K at dealership. hot weather...no cold...no fuel dilution. only issue was ac compressor leak because of the new Freon eats up seals. There was a warranty extension on that. I checked turbo and carbon buildup both in good condition....even the CVT has zero issue and I drive fast (not crazy drag race...just faster than average). I do pay for every 30K mile cvt fluid changes and 50K mile brake fluid change....so all maintenance done... I don't live up north...so no issue with gas in oil. I never drive on eco mode. I buy the extra hp in stport for driving faster...not driving slow with eco. Gas is cheap where I am. oil change at dear is less than 50$. was cheaper before covid. done every 5K miles.... to keep the engine/turbo smooth and cvt long lasting... 5K oil change and 30K cvt fluid change. people had done oil experiment... 5 or 7 K oil change is ok...10K oil change is bad for engine.

Its the monthly oil changes... getting your oil changed regularly will keep a car on the road, especially if its a turbo.. but most people want to ring out every bit of Oil life😢 and the thing dies on a high RPM drive

Also, another idea on the next oil change you could send a sample to Blackstone labs. It would be interesting to see, what their oil analysis says about the condition of the internal components of the engine.

I am interested in the Civic EX Turbo 1.5 2023, and I feel confident after watching this, because as it is I have 10 years and a few months with my current car, and so far it only has 37k+ kms only.. Yup, you heard that right, so this car if I do get it, will most certainly last as long. My car has no issues, the engine is perfect, changed all 5 tires last year, and the valves. Need to fix the AC and that's it. I'll get those fixed, paint it and either sell it or leave it at home for errands and stuff my mom might need to take care of.

I have a 2017 CRV, It now has 200,000 mi. The only issue that it has given me is that the 3rd cylinder always gets the mis fire code after a while. I just changed the coils and plugs and did a valve cleaning with the sea foam. Seems to be running good now, Was thinking of changing the water pump just for precaution and all of the other fluids. Thanks for producing a great video, Leo! While driving many highway or expressway miles is one of the keys toward longevity, along with frequent maintenance and driving the car with a light throttle. You had indicated you changed the oil 200-300 times during the course of 693,000 (+) miles? If the dealer performed the oil changes, the total cost of the oil changes must have been enormous! I am sure you'll be impressed with the following story in the ensuing following paragraphs. John Schlimmer of Greenville, Ohio drove a 1999 Chevy G-3500 Express Delivery Van over the road traveling in multiple states about 110,000 to 120,000 miles a year. He had changed his oil every two weeks until he discovered 100% Synthetic Amsoil 0W-30 Signature Series Motor Oil in the year 2000. Amsoil provided a warranty allowing oil change intervals of 25,000 miles for normal driving or 15,000 miles if it was subjected to severe driving (with a ton of expressway driving, Chevrolet would classify his style of driving as normal). After installing Amsoil in his van, it was his intention to go 25,000 miles for the next oil change, but he forgot and had gone 35,000 miles! So he changed the oil with Amsoil and had the used Amsoil oil with 35,000 miles tested at a lab. The lab said that the used oil was still good with a predicted useful life of another 10,000 to 15,000 miles. Anyway, he continued to change the Amsoil oil at 25,000 intervals until his engine had a mishap at 930,599 miles, which did not factor over 6,000 hours of idling time! A Chevy dealer advised him to replace the engine, so he did. Schlimmer sent his engine to Amsoil for analysis. Amsoil had taken the engine apart and determined a valve keeper had worn out causing it to be wedged inside the chamber, which was not oil related. Had the Chevy dealer replaced the valve keeper, the engine could have been placed back into service. Amsoil took photos of the disassembled engine, which can be viewed at the following link: amsoilcontent.com/ams/performancetests/G2578.html?zo=1420935 You will note that measurements were made of the cylinders, pistons, camshaft, rods, crankshaft and valves, which only showed a 1% wear. The pictures show the various parts free of sludge. He kept his van until it reached 1,200,000 miles at which time he sold it. His automatic transmission did not need any repairs. He changed the ATF fluid in his transmission every 150,000 miles with 100% Synthetic Amsoil ATF! This is an exception to the comment you made in the comments section concerning the vehicles made by Chevrolet, much in the same way you made your video to be an exception to a Scotty Kilmer video. I gleaned Schlimmer's overall story from two of Schlimmer's RU-vid Videos, in addition to the aforementioned Amsoil brochure. If Schlimmer would have used Amsoil from the first time the oil was changed, until 930,000 miles, he would have only had 33 oil changes. In your case, at 693,000 miles, if you were to utilize 100% Synthetic Amsoil 0W-20 every 25,000 miles, you would be at 27 oil changes and needing your 28th oil change at 700,000 miles. Of course the oil filter for the Honda is smaller and holds a lesser amount of contaminants, so they need changing at 12,500. Think of the savings of oil change expense getting only 27 oil changes (plus 55 oil filter changes), as opposed to 200 to 300 oil changes. In addition, you would be saving gasoline, since your MPG would increase in comparison to typical full synthetic oil (which contain a majority of hydrocracked petroleum oil)! I am an Independent Amsoil Dealer (all Amsoil Dealers are Independent Contractors). I became a dealer after I became an ordinary customer. I had been a regular consumer of Mobil 1 for several years (after trying a variety of synthetic oil brands), when I decided to give Amsoil a try. I was so impressed by its Amsoil’s performance in comparison to Mobil 1, that I decided to stick exclusively to Amsoil almost 20 years ago.

I got a 2016 Honda civic with a 1.5turbo and I have 200K miles I bought it brand new and it’s been a good care aside from a few electrical issues and bad low pressure fuel pump at 120K miles . I always use 87 octane and it gets between 33 and 35 mpg .

I also have a 2017 Civic coupe 1.5 turbo. With 112,000 miles on it. Has averaged 43.7 m.p.g. since new. I change the oil and filter every 4000 to 5000 miles. CVT trans oil every 35,000 miles. Iridium plugs every 60,000 miles. It runs perfect and I believe it will outlive me. I would guess, with care this engine is a 500,000-mile engine but we will see.

Accord 1.5T have more headgasket problems than Civic 1.5T. Accord is 488 pounds heavier and roomier to carry bigger passengers. Warming up, Eco and Manual helps too with reliability. I would switch to premium brand name gas for the Turbo just in case knock on wood. With that many miles I would give it more premium stuff like a red interior. Keep it forever.

I bought my 2019 civic coupe ex-t in March of 2022 with 10,500 miles on it. It's now August 30th of 2023. I have 46,000 miles now 😆. If I keep this up I'll have a crap load of miles. I'm determined to keep this car looking, and running great for years. I don't ever plan on selling. I change my how did you say it? Oily? Lol I'm just playing. But I do change my oil every 3500 miles. I know that's crazy. I just do it though. It's what I'm used to from the old days. I use Pennzoil platinum 0w20. However I'm switching to amsoil now that I found a shop that stocks it. I only use OEM or Wix oil filters. I change my air filter every 6 months. I run 91 non ethanol or 93 depending on the station. I also run a good fuel injector cleaner every oil change. Probably not necessary since it's GDI, but I do anyway. I clean my MAF every oil change. I fluid film undercoat the car every fall. I keep the paint clean and well protected (been detailing for 20+ years). I keep the engine bay clean, and tidy. I also run Lucas oil additives for modern cars with GDI and VVT. Or the STP equivalent. About to do spark plugs too. I know that the modern plugs these days are good for 100k or more, I just figure why not give my car a present for it's 50k birthday? I always always always let the car warm up before I drive it, and stay out of boost until it's fully up to temp, and has been driven atleast 5 miles. I also clean the 2 map sensors once in awhile. Clean the throttle body if it's needed. Then 2x a year I do the crc intake valve and turbo cleaning right before an oil change. Oh and I've installed a catch can. Which I think is important for GDI engines especially turbo charged and the environment I live in. I need to do the brake fluid soon too. For me it's not so much how long can I drive it without spending money. It's more how long can it drive, look, and feel like new? I could probably get away with oil changes every 5k, especially when I switch to amsoil. Lots of things I could do. I just enjoy knowing it's taken care of. Air filters are $12. Oil changes are $40 with Pennzoil platinum and an OEM Honda filter. Might be more with amsoil , we'll see. Plugs are $70 if I buy them locally. I spend about $45 every fall on fluid film. Most of my money goes into gas, and detailing products honestly lol. Im always buying ceramic spray wax etc to use after washing my car. Which I do often. I did an actual ceramic coating this summer, and then a few weeks later added a nice ceramic paste wax over that. Now every time I wash it I keep up with the protection by using a nice ceramic spray wax after I dry the car. Wish you could share pictures on RU-vid. Anyway, 700k!!! That's really insane, if you hit 1 million miles Im pretty positive Honda will buy you a new civic. I love the 10th gen platform, think it's some of Hondas best work. Design wise, and technology wise.

One exception does not disprove a rule. The type of driving will have a much greater influence on the longevity of components than the total distance travelled. If you're mostly cruising on the freeway, turbo and clutch will experience comparatively little wear and tear.

My si doesn’t have eco mode sadly, but i also dont drive it like a teen with their first car, its at 100k now hopefully a few hundred more to go

Best cars I've even owned Honda civics, all the ones ive had run them into the ground in miles like this. I just went ahead and bought a new manual civic sport 1.5t and a 6 speed trans. On the older ones still had original basically everything including the clutch. But yes Sir they do get a little loud and vibrational after 200K it seems like they will require new motor mounts.

Do you not know what an average is? Just cause the 1.5t get head gaskets issues and oil dilution does not mean your 1.5t will have those problems. You are on the luckier side of the average which is awesome. 1.5t blowing gaskets at 70-100k. Other 1.5ts no problems at 300k plus miles.

Scotty is right , but this engine can last 250 to 300 the oil is regularly changed and it’s warmed up especially in extremely cold weather so the turbo isn’t been pushed hard when cold . It’s not gonna take the abuse and neglect they you can get away with the pre 2018 accord engines or. Modern Camry engines but overall it’s pretty good lol.
