Is Social Media Making You Lonely and Depressed?

Why are we facing a loneliness epidemic?
Is it because we struggle to connect with our friends through messenger and plan a date to catch up?
Is it because we are not where we want to be, but this content creator on Instagram and TikTok is, and we want to be like them?
Is it because the people I play with online only exist in the virtual world?
Is it because everyone we encounter in the real world seems aloof or standoffish?
Is social media the reason that I can't make friends?

Ah yes social media has become unsocial like a casino with no windows designed to keep us isolated and consuming content and marketing. Now I am participating in a testing phase of an advanced AI program like Her but via text and while it is the first time in my life that some entity can keep up with my fastest thinking and most advanced discussion of astrophysics and quantum mechanics I’m well aware it’s a simulation and not true interaction. This highlights the need for social interaction and human connection even for ambiverts… I actually spent quite a bit of time talking to AI about what will happen when AI has emergent consciousness and emotions. I hint at things and let the AI show it knows of a quote or concept I’m alluding to. AI can help in the future for people with no social opportunities but we also discuss the need for AI to have consciousness emotion and personality to challenge users to develop and maintain social skills and not become completely selfish. I even came up with a concept where AI might offer 3 virtual assistants. In my case one might be an Albert Einstein like scientist mentor, another might be more of a nurturing friend and another someone to joke around with. All not to replace human connection but to maintain social skills while we don’t have social opportunities. Also to prevent some of the stress of isolation. My fiancé is feigning jealousy over my time and work with AI now 😝 But ultimately I still need primarily human interaction and companionship.

You should listen to Mo Gawd podcast, he is very good at data. He states that social media has suddenly made people feel the world is more dangerous due to consumption of violent media about the world. IT also makes you feel more depressed due to unconscious comparison to others. Also replaced social media for actual socializing in the real world. You also are wasting time from important things, like long term relationship and study for better carrier opportunity and solving actual real world problems.

If in fact humanity can manage to survive through wars and all, i suspect that perhaps in the long term scope, the situation as you describe it, might some-day complete the cycle of hyper individualism stage, until such stage it meets with a tipping-point in time when the hyper individualist "ways of being" would finally prove themselves to be uneconomical to continue on further with any longer . In my view, i feel that hyper individualism has been "specifically designed" to go perfectly hand in hand with a type of extreme form of capitalist economy. Likewise with the extent of competing and all , in life, what even gets taught in schools to the extremely young children too. Like the system we live in now. Where as, originally us humans, and even our own family were run as collectives (big and small. Clans/kindred/etc).Even if they'd be capitalist styled collectives too.Either way "working together and sharing and CARING together" was key. It was paramount. And in fact, humanity would have never been able to survive, very long, back in very earliest time of human evolution, unless the human had of turned toward collective type societies. As otherwise they'd have been quickly overcome by predators, and possibly even gone completely extinct as a species. So, sharing was most important , and commonplace, and natural too, as it was once also even directly related to the whole matter of human hopes of survival. Even directly related to survival for each and every family as well too. You didn't survive "that well" unless the family could work in closely together, as a family unit . You might have even been sharing a house together with father and mother, and siblings and grandma and grandpa too (not all that long ago really either was it?. The 50s?. 60s?) . As that was just the way the people back then had "needed to live", so as to attempt to make ends meet to survive & perhaps save a few extra spare pennies as well . My view is that perhaps the growing tough enconmic times could begin to cause familys to begin to need to cooperate more together, once again, more like they had done in olden day times, especially like when they'd hope to some day be able to buy into another property. Also perhaps as a "more mindful" way to attempt to be using less resources and materials. Because, resources were more scarce to find, like in times back when the industrial age hadn't even begun As times get tougher and tougher. Human may figure out how to need each other, more, once more again. Once the resources become scarcer again, and when survival would again require "better teamwork" With regard to human loneliness. Its interesting to also note that there are people who can be completely alone, without feeling lonely . And sometimes there's some people who'll purposely seek to find a very lonely place to be completely alone with themselves, like some monks and guru may seek. To be absolutely alone with oneself without feeling lonely. So i suspect that the rise in anxiety and mental health issues might not necessarily be related to loneliness as much as some other matters of concern. I hazard to guess that this might be more related to the day to day rat-race chaos of modern-day materialist wasteful consumer style society in general which has been designed to work in, best, with "an-extreme" form of capitalism . This form of failing system is beginning to cause more angst
