SRAM lost me at 1100 dollars. Sticking to my cable actuated GX Eagle until the price comes down. 1100 is cheaper than the outrageously priced xx1 and x0 options, but the price is still too high.
@SemiSendy

It's by no means inexpensive, but we've come a LONG way from the original AXS at the same price for just a derailleur and shifter.
@allencolby
@allencolby Год назад
@@SemiSendy I think people also need to realize that it comes with a crankset and a cassette. A GX cassette is $250, crankset is $150, and chain is $50. Subtract that from the $1,000 and it's the same price as the GX AXS. Is it expensive, yup! But if you wait until your cassette and chainring are worn down, it suddenly becomes the same price as the AXS upgrade.

Behaves just like a normal drivetrain setup. The derailleur is still torqued at its normal 35nm to the frame interface. The axel threads into the derailleur itself.

Why Can't they just make a cable actuated versio!😩. I would buy that.
@SemiSendy
@SemiSendy Год назад
There's a few reason why they don't, and why you would not want that. Two key ones being that without the motor drive, the derailleur cannot react to impacts in the manner which greatly helps to safeguard damage of the derailliuer and subsequently the frame. Another being that the shift timing/cassette mapping cannot be achieved through manual cable actuation.

Almost a year on it, and it’s still on the bike. It’s not without its faults but still a great improvement over AXS. I will say there is a performance difference between the GX and XX version I’m running on the ripmo, and the GX is not nearly as quiet. It’s far better than the AXS was, but still seems to have a different clutch tension than the XX. I think the biggest downside to the transmission system is its performance in poor conditions. It deteriorates far more quickly in muddy/wet/gritty conditions than most cable actuated systems. I get the sense that perhaps there’s a tighter tolerance between the chain and cassette that amplifies wet grit that gets in there. Outside of that, it’s a big improvement over AXS

@@SemiSendy hey thanks for the long term review / I did end up getting but I’ve sold it now - it got louder and I just thought the shifting was awkwardly slow - I have gone back to full xt 12 speed setup and I cannot believe how smooth it is in comparison / it’s also a lot quieter too than the gx mech by a long long mile almost silent now bar the odd big big huck - I was disappointed with transmission it sounded good and generally was simple to setup but it did become noisy and crunchy too in the wet like you say - honestly go bang a xt kit on from new and be amazed - it’s nuts going back to shimano after transmission you’d think it was a huge step back but in reality it feels like a better premium product over the transmission / and I’ve not touched it since the day I fitted it either (cable tension or anything else)

Unless that tech become less expensive than cable actuated, I will never consider it. Derailleur cable maintenance is super easy and work just as good. Honestly I think sram is really trying to push useless tech down our throats with hype and fanfare
@SemiSendy
@SemiSendy Год назад
Your first point definitely has a lot of merit for those of us that are well adept at maintaining a cable actuated drivetrain. However, there's a lot of people who aren't so inclined, and a good portion of them who welcome tech like this. Like anything in life, there's all types of people with all types of perspectives, skill sets and reasons for finding value in the things they spend their money on. What's low value for you, can be high value for someone else. I'm passionate about simplicity myself, but coming from a world of engineering I have a deep appreciation for these sorts of things as well. Different strokes.

@MarkusFinholt Год назад
@@SemiSendy i should, but I usually use it for much longer while having a shitty drivetrain.
@SemiSendy
@SemiSendy Год назад
@@MarkusFinholt staying on top of chain replacement and general maintenance will go a long way. Of course two years is entirely dependent on the mileage you’re doing, so it’s a relative timeframe. I put in a ton of miles every year with lots of abusive days in rough conditions, and I don’t blow through full drivetrains like that. Keeping up with the chain replacement and swapping the cassette and chainring when the time comes is closer to $300 over a two year period. The idea here too is that the derailleur design is meant to make it far exceed the lifespan for a traditional design. Of course time will tell, but the thought and engineering behind T-Type is pretty massive. It’s by no means cheap even at the GX level, but it’s definitely on a totally different playing field. I’m not at all trying to convince you or anyone else to buy it, just pointing out that there’s quite a bit more to it than what you’re stating.

workhorse of the future? no. cables and muscles are workhorses. electronics are disposable - perfect for constantly selling batteries, controllers and motorized derailleurs to consumers, especially because SRAM denies warranty claims left and right. Source? mechanic and service writer in the industry for over 10 years. Seriously folks, AXS rate of failure has been absurdly high even just in my own anecdotal experience... and transmission has so far been a poorer-performing drivetrain than AXS. would you listen to ford mechanics when they say avoid their cars because their transmissions suck? because you should... the people who literally work on these things for a living should be the ones you listen to when you're looking to find out if something can act as a "workhorse" on your bike. Interestingly, SRAM does make some good things. My favorite drivetrains ever are SRAM Red/Rival/Apex 10-speed, SRAM GX 10-speed and 12-speed GX Eagle, alongside Shimano Deore XT. Why? Because they all have unbelievably good (and FAST!) shifting, insane reliability, great build quality/materials and VALUE. The drivetrains mentioned above also don't suffer from all the additional failure mechanisms that electronic groupsets suffer from. Firmware issues. Connectivity issues - both physical (battery to derailleur) and wireless. Bad batteries - both dead on arrival and die on the trail (and I don't mean lose charge - I mean fail). "Bricked" derailleurs that literally just will NOT find/accept/react to wireless input from new controllers - seen it happen three times over the last 2 years in one shop - alongside derailleurs that stop being able to understand where they are in space and consequently start missing shifts, and also derailleurs that literally wait 1 or 2 seconds before initiating a shift. Speaking of delayed shifts... Transmission literally takes over 6 seconds to get from one end of the cassette to the other shifting as fast as you possibly can... Meanwhile, my finger pulls a cable and my gear ratio is adjusted simultaneously. AND - it's cheap. I've literally never broken a cable on a ride, but if I were worried I might - cables are a couple bucks and lighter than a battery, I can carry a spare if I were paranoid or bikepacking. To suggest that ANY electronic drivetrain can be a "workhorse of the future" is just absurd in my mind. This stuff is filling our landfills with electronic waste for no reason. Anyways, sorry for ranting. I know you're just trying to put out content here, but I legitimately cannot understand why anybody puts this garbage on their bike unless they just absolutely cannot wrap their head around adjusting a cable derailleur a couple times a year at worst, they have way too much money burning a hole in their pocket, absolutely cannot STAND looking at a cable in front of their handlebars, or a combination of some or all of the above.

@SemiSendy
@SemiSendy Год назад
Definitely a fair question! When I comment on a bike being noisey, I'm referring creaks and rattles. Things that could be from cables rattling, creaky bottom brackets, loose headsets or rotor bolts, etc. Drivetrain noise can come from chain slap, shifting or worn out components like the chain, cassette, pulleys or chainring. The mechanical noise coming from a smooth running hub doesn't bother me in the same way, because it's not a possible indicator of a potential problem. That said, poorly designed hubs that ping and clank under heavy engagement (hard pedaling) are very distracting and annoying to me. Industry Nine hubs have been on my bikes since the mid 2000's and have been rock solid. I do prefer the buzz of the pawls to be quieter than off the shelf, so I use Dumonde tech grease which greatly reduces it and is spec'd by Industry Nine as a suitable option. After a fresh service with Dumonde Tech grease, you can't even hear the engagement on the trail.
