I like the direction they seem to be going because, (even though i really like bed logging as an idea) if bed logging is the only way to log off outside habs, the punishment is remarkably severe for players with limited portions of time to play. For those players, they may not be able to engage in large portions of gameplay because they can't get outside of a certain radius. So I like the idea of rewarding people who use beds rather than punishing those who don't. That being said, that portable bed idea is really neat
@SpaceTomato

@@MMORPG87 I fail to see how it waters down the experience at all whatsoever. On the contrary, the current system of logging in and out without a bed and being instantly, magically transported back to your home planet/station with all your gear, feels incredibly watered down and very immersion breaking. Ship gets destroyed and you're stranded? No problem, just relog and you're back home, safe and sound! That's the way it works right now. But if I have to log back in to wherever I was, then that means I'm still stranded, and I have to survive long enough for either a rescue ship to arrive, or try to find some other way off the planet. This is especially going to be ESPECIALLY important once death of a spaceman comes into play. If the current "fast travel back to home" logout option remains with DOASM, it'll be stupidly easy to cheat death by relogging without a bed. Being able to log out anywhere without losing progress, means that the choices you made in the previous gaming session have actual consequences waiting for you when you return.

When I bought my SC game package in 2014, I was recently out of high school and years away from finishing college. I’m now an adult with a full-time job, I’m engaged to be married, I have things to do in my life to maintain my living space and have to do all my own chores. I know I’m far from the only one whose life has changed like that. The fact is, I and many others just don’t have as much time to spend gaming as we used to, maybe when we first started playing. These kinds of changes to logging off and the recent respawn changes as well do a lot to help people like me continue to be able to enjoy the game, and get value out of the time we’re able to spend on it.

There was also talk about a lot of small ships losing their jump drives once carriers were working. If those ships without beds all lose their jump drives, they'll be limited to how far from a bed they can actually go anyway. The entire point of the Vanguard series was being able to jump ahead of the fleet while other fighters were all bound to their carriers.

There's a difference between quantum drive and jump drive though. Presumably the vanguard have ftl travel but the small fighters will not. The quantum drive is basically a call back to the "autopilot" in wing commander where you travel to the next mission area.

I think that the official references to bedlogging are very old and refers to it as a way of saving the game (..in an online game that constantly autosaves) is quite telling that the game has far evolved the features concept. Bed logging is like when you played some mmos and you had a fav spot to log out at, not everyone does that. With them pushing for a complete persistence it makes sense what they ended up going for now. You cant really force people to log out at beds and if its a big inconvenience to not do that, people will be less likely to want to play the game. Not everyone wants to "roleplay" but the option for people is there. I will keep bed logging when I can because I like to do so. The game is so immersive (when it works) it makes me want to do that and I wish I had more options like that. I wouldnt refuse well rested buffs tho lmao

As for bed logging, this is something that is important to me, and the way I see and play the game. I think tying logging off to bed-objects is a great way to add immersion and give player decisions meaning. Without it, it's just more arcade fun, something that is not terrible in certain places, but we need to actively hold the line somewhere if we want Star Citizen to be what we dreamed about. Your idea of bed items we can carry with us, and roll out on the floor of a Pisces (or anywhere) in a pinch would completely solve it for me.

The way I interpret or speculate Chris’s response to bed logging is it is a way to “lock” your character to the ships velocity so that way you are on a multicrew ship, you don’t log in and phase right through the ship because it is still trying to keep up during the initial boot up. It also provides an excellent role play experience for logging out of the game. But if you log out at a spot on a planet, you don’t have to worry about high speeds effecting you logging in because (other than the planet’s rotation) you don’t have to worry about the speed of anything to properly log in. (I could be way wrong about this but is a theory that popped in my head the moment I heard Chris’s response. That being said, I have said before, that if the intention of disconnecting was bed logging only, I have always wanted a sleepy back as a way to log out wherever I want but still be with the confines of the bed logging mechanic. So when you said this I was in total agreement with you! That being said I am happy to be able to log out anywhere and be able to log back in where I left off. Let’s say your last play session ended with you crash landing on a planet. I don’t want people’s initial response to be either backspace, or disconnect from the server. I want them to have to engage in survival mechanics to stay alive until rescue. It is bad enough that prison is designed in such a way that if you get a long sentencing, you can just log off and then log back in later and be able to go free like nothing happened. In a system with a law, I want the law to actually be enforced harshly. I know the prison system isn’t complete yet; however, I do hope they one day make the prison sentencing more harsh and mandatory online hours instead of real-time hours. Anyways I went on a big tangent and I do apologize. But yeah this is why I don’t want to log off in a place and then wake up in a station bed. Oh and this also means I don’t have to leave my ship too. One day I imagine claiming will be much longer and expensive. I don’t want to lose my ship because I crashed and had to log off for the night soon after. I want to get that ship up and running! Hehe!
@OneTwoMark
@OneTwoMark 3 месяца назад
Logging off wherever you are and staying put in that spot is a major step up, and having bed logs still remain but give you buffs as an option is like the cherry on the cake. I do also see the benefits of the other side of keeping bed only log outs. For example it would limit the number of players in specific ships. So you actually need to bring a capital on a big org mission rather than just clown carring a cutlass, as you say. However, making beds give buffs instead could still supplement this idea. For example the buffs could refresh you or allow you to go longer without water or food, expell less energy etc. Or perhaps if you log normally, you still drain water and food slowly but it wil only reach a minimum of 25%. So if you bring more players than you have beds, it could be a lot less efficient.

I think we lost a lot of stuff when CIG switched forums early on. I remember bedlogging being discussed back then. I remember the official line was that players logged out in a ship but not in a bed would cause their autopilot to engage, and pilot the ship back to its last port. Apparently my post didn't go through, maybe because I linked the actual stretch goal page? Bed logging was never a stretch goal. It was in the game from the beginning: look at some of the first ships. 300i, Freelancer, Constellation. They had beds because of CR's plans for long range trips. Then you have the Hornet and the Avenger (from before it gained that "Stalker" bit). They didn't have beds because they were intended to stay at bases, not to BE bases.

I agree with your summary on different ships and staying overnight. It’s like day cabs and sleepers with trucks. If you have a day cab, you’d probably have to stay in a motel, or like you suggested, have a sleeping bag or cot.

To be fair it sounds like Chris' comments back in 2015 regarding bed logging were from a time when Star Citizen was meant to be a single player / co-cop game. It's since then become more of an MMO so it makes sense to have certain mechanics like that evolve with it.

I like both formats myself. I love deep dives that gives perspective from where we came from and where we might be going and why. The shorter videos are easier to digest than the longer ones and I think that I prefer multiple shorter videos over longer ones. Even though this is shorter; it didn't sacrifice any depth. For specific features that can be put into smaller videos; I prefer this format. But there is still a place for longer videos where things are interconnected and exploring those connections in depth deserve the longer format. Perhaps the specfic features do short form like this; and for broader game play discussions (like economy, interconnected industries, technologies like server meshing, missions?, crafting?) keep the longer format.

They could also implement a sort of lore mechanic. Say when you log off, it shows an animation of your character injecting a metabolism slowing agent. While you're away your various health levels decrease at a much slower rate. When you log back in you awake on the ground to an alarm that fades in (to imply you set an alarm to wake yourself. Turns off when you move) and can resume where you left off. But, say if you were away for too long maybe a few days, when you relog your character is rebuilt at a medical facility and you lose everything implying that you died while you were away. If your body is still there and not looted your stuff could be recovered. But with ship beds they could play an animation where you put on a mask (implied that it's attached to said bed) that slows your metabolism even further letting you be away for weeks or maybe months at a time. That would still leave beds in a place that they feel like an actual benefit. Habs, stations, and capital ships could have even better technology to let you save your place for even longer periods of time. Just a thought. I also really want cots and sleeping bags still. Those would be very useful even under this system I described.

One of the coolest things i'm bummed they dropped. Is when we could quantum drive into empty space. So you could be in a fire fight and quantum drive in any direction, then drop out anywhere, then quantum drive back, and re-engage. Was so fun. Now if i want to just hang out in the middle of space. I have to quantum drive to a planet first, then drop out after it starts.

Don't forget that the dev's vision changes based on what the players/testers come up with as strategies/exploits. For example, if they don't log you back in where you logged out (even without a bed), then you could use logout/login as a form of free "instant travel" back to the last station/landing-zone that you used, even across multiple star systems. When they first talked about bed-logging, I suspect the devs hadn't thought of that yet.

It's also fair to note that "bed persistence" in crewed play has the gameplay design difficulty of figuring out what to do when 1 player is in, the others logged out, and that one player gets the ship destroyed. Do bedlogged people magically teleport to their home cities? Are they killed? If the ship is then claimed and pulled can the bedlogged players be transferred to the new iteration of the ship? I can totally understand them not being too big on tying too much of the game around ship bed interactions. There's a lot of stuff to keep track.

Ideas to balance standard logout and bed logout : -Food and water continues to decrease during the logout real time (to a minimum of 12% for water/food when you log back in) . Logout from the bed would not consume any food/water or would not go below 75%. -Standard logout clean any beneficial buff acquired from food/water/drugs. Bed logout would keep the buffs. -Sleeping/logout from bed gives a buff that offers more time before your heart rate is too high to sprint. Not sleeping in a bed for a long time gives you a small malus of stamina. -An "instant" tent that you can deploy on the ground on any planets/moons (but really dangerous planets) .It would be a really small airtight tent with just a bed in it and allow all the previous benefits. (the tent cannot be placed in space or inside a spaceship). In the end players with ship without beds could still logout from a bed at the condition they can find solid ground on telluric bodies. Those who don't have tents or bed would have to do a regular logout or find a station to sleep.

I get why they want to make locations persist without beds, but I also really think bed logging is a valuable feature for the exact reason you mentioned about differentiating ships. Maybe they could make logging off a tiered system. Log off on foot or in a single seat fighter without getting in a bed? Tier 0 logoff, your location persists for 24 hours before you reset to a station or LZ. Slap down a tent and cot or use the bed in a 100i? T1 with one week of location persistence. MISC Odyssey bed? T3 with unlimited location persistence.

I think the main issue is what happens to your ship when theres a disconnect. In theory they could setup a quantam function and "campsite" that if youre off long enough your character becomes and Npc and aets up a campsite. There could be ground based and space based campsites. Itll try to find a safeish place (out of space lanes and spawns or enviromental effecrs) for you to spawn back in at.

Nicely done. I can see the change as a way to make accessibility to the wider Verse (more than one system) palatable to those without beds. BUT I do hope that beds have good and measurable benefits so as to NOT reduce their significance too much. Best worlds for both sides.

Interesting topic, @SpaceTomato. It doesn't look like bed-logging is going away, so there is still scope to park up somewhere in a ship with a bed and log off that way. I see what you're getting at in terms of "devaluing" bed logging by allowing players to simply log off whilst milling about somewhere (e.g. on foot) and reappearing at that location next log in, but I don't think it is that big of a deal if bed logging grants temporary stamina/reaction/etc. buffs, etc. - I like your idea about carrying around a swag/cot for logging off on-foot, or perhaps within a ship that doesn't have beds. There's also implications and edge-cases that others have mentioned here in the use case of a multi-crew ship with multiple beds/racks. PS - All the best with the renovations!

THANKS! this video was awesome. best of luck with the mold removal / getting out of there. mold is horrible. make sure you're using not only really good ventilation filters for your HVAC but get a recirculating air scrubber that has an activated charcoal filter. it will save your life in 20 years. ask me how i know (obviously i'm not dead but i've known a few)

This was a great video to watch. You must have started making this video before they announced changes to medical. I say that because they seem to be making things easier instead of harder. I think they're going to be heading in the direction of logging out anywhere at any time and just being able to save the stuff that's on you I wouldn't be surprised if death of a spaceman is pretty much over as well at this point. The project seems to be going in a different direction right now. I just hope it's going to be one that's enjoyable for most.

I've wondered about bedlogging since, unless you're in your ship with a bed, they don't have a way to rent/access one of the EZ Habs for you to use... so the only other option is to Esc out. You'd think they'd be able to make EZ Habs operate like the hospitals, get assigned a floor and room, go to it, then bed log, but even that hasn't been discussed as an option from CIG. So it's interesting they are now saying where you logout is where you'll return to when returning into the game but that they plan for bed logging to give some type of buff for doing it that way.

This is a super interesting topic because it involves so much more than just what happens to characters after log out. Remember, everything in the game is meant to be persistent. If your ship and the junk you toss on the ground will remain after log out then why not your Player Character too? What would make sense to me is if your character remains in the game after you log out. They just lay down wherever you logged out and hibernate until you log back in. Think Rust or V Rising. So, you could just log out anywhere you want but that might leave you vulnerable. You'd log off in a bed for for the buff and the safety. Bed logging could have other benefits like pausing your food and drink depletion too. If you were to log out in an exposed/hazardous area you might log back in laying on a medbed. I think it would be fine for the game to have some level of risk-reward for when and where you logout. When it comes to landing zones they'd have to break persistence and teleport you to a Hab just to prevent passage ways from filling up with player bodies. Also, a system for easily letting your friends drop off your logged out body at a station might be nice too.

I thought I saw, read, or heard somewhere that when players log out they're taken over by NPC AI and goes through the motions of taking you to a nearby bed to sleep... If you're outside the radius, like say stranded in space or on a terrestrial surface, it's like as you say and you sleep right there with your lifelines depleting. If you're on foot at a landing zone or space station, players could get a pop up saying "logging out here can incure a cost of habitation" because your NPC character rents a room till you log in. This keeps persistence, allows logging out anywhere somewhat safely, gives purpose for beds on ships, and gives players decision as to where they logout. This is all assuming the NPC AI is going to be as robust as they've said before, as in having their own schedules, being able to takeoff/land ships, take public transport, etc.

Great new format buddy. Hey hey, watch out for the mould. You don’t want to be breathing in mould spores! Stay safe. I would like to see customisable ships, like you could opt for a gun closet or a bed. A kitchenette or a med bay etc. makes more sense to me. Also, bed logging should incorporate putting your ship in automatic orbit around a planet or moon and then logging out. Ships should also have a camping option for planets with a breathable atmosphere. Land, pitch a tent, sit in a chair etc. RDR2 has it and so does Fallout 4. Finally, monitors need to work in ships. How cool to sit back or lay in your bunk and watch RU-vid or a show inside your ship. lol

This is what I thought was gonna happen - Bed logging will work as they describe, might have a well-rested buff attached to it. But for logging out wherever, I thought the NPC AI subsumption system would take over your logged off character, turn them into an NPC, and walk your character to the nearest bed, and with persistence your character would be visibly sleeping in that bed. Scenarios being: - If your ship has a bed, you can either manually go to bed or logoff and the AI NPC would walk you to your bed. - At a landing zone or station, the NPC AI would walk your character to the nearest hab, and a popup could say "Logging off here can incur a hab fee" because your NPC AI will have your character buy a room. If you own a home at say a LZ city, then your walked to your home via NPC AI. - Stranded on a planet/moon, if you're near enough to your ship with a bed then same as previous steps. If not, you just sleep right there like Rust or Ark and your life support can drain, perhaps incentivising players to find a cave to logoff to protect their life support / visibility. This is all assuming the robust NPC AI is what they said it will be, where they have schedules, jobs, fly ships, takeoff/landing, taking public transport, going about their days from their home at an LZ to the moon or planet where they mine, or the trade routes that they move things around for the "player assisted / NPC driven" economy.

Nice work tomato as usual! The bed logging was a powerful tool back in the day but now its a bit dated. Now it would be preferred to persistent log out anywhere in the verse and but does your body sleep or remain visible then they need to counteract being shot while you're afk, because that's not fun

I think a good context to put this in too, is the game's scope fundamentally changed when fully rendered planets became realized. Up until that point, the idea was to have space proper, and then landing zone areas planet side...much like what Starfield is right now, and not so much seamless landing...but rather streamed in animations that make it seem like you're landing (Much like Hell Divers 2). The challenge is really anything that depends on something that is in constant motion or won't be there when they log back in (like another player's ship or ground vehicle). During the stetch goal era, the scope expanding to what it is now was not really thought out I believe. I REALLY like your idea of a portable bed for logging out in areas where a bed is not available. This solves a lot of the persistence side of it. A challenge still however would be: what if a player logs in before the ship's owner they previously logged out of? Would they be considered revived at the nearest station by default? Would the ship owner then be able to get them their stuff (eg. would the property persist even if the player does not). When we start thinking of these scenarios it becomes a bit of a brain teaser on how to do it yet also keep it immersive without cheap shortcuts, etc.

Omg you did so good making this vid, with the research and all! I totally agree with everything you say here! I actually made a post over at Spectrum a few weeks ago, advocating much of the same views as you did here. I also suggested the use of bedrolls and tent for players to bring with them for logging out /in. I think this would be the absolute best solution. I mean, some ships would just downright loose their advantage if bedlogging gets nerfed the way CIG seem to want to do it.
