I was listening to Kenyan gospel giant Emmy Kosgei on an interview the other day. She said something I found profound about submission in a marriage. This is what she said and I paraphrase: submission is when it comes freely, willingly and natural. It is not submission when it’s demanded, forced or required.

When a woman gets married, she goes in full motion to practice her trained submission, but when in marriage she feels loved, protected and provided for, submission comes naturally, it is not trained, demanded or required. When a sane mature woman doesn’t feel loved, protected and provided for, her masculinity takes over femininity because of her natural instinct to love, protect and provide for her children. She puts on her guard and full armour and that’s when submission dies, because the trust is lost. She grabs the leadership role, because her helper role has lost meaning. Society has done so well to guide and prepare the girl child for marriage but has done little to nothing for the boy child, so when these two get married, it’s a recipe for disaster. Some men will prey on submission and take, take and take, until you are drained and have nothing to give any more. To Submit is to GIVE, ACCEPT TO BE GIVEN and ACCEPT TO GIVE IN. SO WHEN SHOULD A GOOD WIFE STOP SUBMITTING?

My dad told me something about submission in line with what Rachel said about doing your part. He said I dont guarantee you reciprocity as the Bible states but it is imperative in you that you do your part. Recently RukhShana (who I wish you would host her fyi- her marriage is interesting and inspiring) said something in their (with her husband) series Which brought this home she said “perhaps it would be easier if every husband was deserving of it. But submission like honor is not about the one to whom it’s accorded but about who accords it” I calmed down about this topic.
