I'm still feeling it 2024. Thanks to Gil who signed his name with a heron drawing. Saw him at the Musicians Exchange in Ft Laud late 80's; I miss that place.😢

Teach Brother Gil! "Got to have some bottom for the music, makes the top make sense, gives meaning to the sides. Is That Jazz?" -GSH (Brother Robert Jordan, bass)
"(...) we choose to start our shows by doing a little bit of this kind of music because, every once in a while, I have going into record stores, lately, and found our music in a category called «miscellaneous» ... bothers the hell out of me. You know, the alphabet thing would be alright, it would be under "H" or "S", you know, they can't get that together either! But the truth is that we feel as though the folks are often too anxious to put things in various little compartments, too often they are anxious to sweep certain sorts of music under the corner of the rug, we find this is particulary true with music they refer to as jazz. Feel as though there's a lot of folks who have contributed to the culture of our music who have been responsible for chronicling the times through the music ... and than folks who are creative enough to put music together should be creative enough also to define it! So in defiance of all the trends we referred to our music as "Midnight Music", called it the first minute of the new day, say that we barely need some first day music, say that we barely need some new ideas and some new things for our music, so what we would like you too do is relax, of course, and enjoy yourself and ask yourself this question, about the music, the question that we like to have you handled is: all of this music and all of this rythms, and all other things they do for it become a certain song on music, the question is: is that jazz? I'll take you there"
This is my favorite song from Gil, I went and saw what I believe was the last set he ever played at B.B.Kings in Times Square and he was pretty tired, took several breaks between songs to let other features play, but his crowd work was insane I still remember him saying "Back in my day we used to call it Jizz Ass, but you cant go around calling it Jizz Ass, so we abbreviated it to Jazz" What a legend. I smoked a blunt in a yellow cab on the 59th street bridge on the way there, driver was mad, but I was living, times was good. Thanks Gil.
Is That Jazz? This song is by Gil Scott-Heron and appears on the album Reflections (1981) and on the album I'm New Here (2010) not sure, however if it's the same beautiful assembly of artists? Good luck. Reply if you find more. Me too!
I believe it's around the time of the earliest album upon which it appeared; "Reflections", 1981. He is obviously still a very young man at this time. Hope tat helps
