I had a coworker with a 2nd gen and 395k miles. That sold me as he said he had traveled cross country multiple times in it and he still uses it for work. I'm also a fan of older trucks I feel like machines were made better as opposed to now where reliability has been compromised for fuel efficiency and comfort.
I’ve had an ‘03, a ‘10, and now a ‘19. 1st to 2nd gen change was drastically different. 2nd to 3rd, meh not so much. Always a little over 20mpg with first two trucks ( usually 21-23mpg). Haven’t broken the 20 mark on this one. Comparing all three, I’d say overall winner is 2nd gen for me
Have you noticed a mileage improvement on your 19 as it has broken in since you made the comment? I test drove a 2017 with 41k on it and while it wasn't enough driving for me to see firsthand, average mileage when I got in it was 16.8...that's not great. Not sure if I should chalk that up to stop and go test drives, previous owner driving style...or if it really does just gets shitty mileage. I've heard so many arguments in both directions. The Toyota salesmen was quick to dismiss it as inaccurate due to idling on the lot.
Casey Todd Yeah just over 5000 miles on it now. It stays just over 19mpg. I only put about 25 miles per day on it, all highway. I’ve yet to take it on a good long road trip. It would possibly break 20mpg now. The 2010 was always right at 22mpg no matter what kind of driving I did. No tonneau cover on any of the trucks
My 2006 Toyota Tacoma, V6 4.0 liter, 4 door, short bed, 4x4, 6 speed manual is a beast! With over 191,844 miles and still keeps going. I have no plans on selling it. I've driven it to Niagara Fall, Canada to Mexico, to California to Florida and she still keeps on going ...
Not to mention that the 2nd generation 4.0L put the oil filter on top and easy to get to. I absolutely loved this feature as this made oil changes extremely convenient especially for those that use the 15,000 plus mile synthetic oils where one might change the filter halfway through. They moved the oil filter back to the bottom or underneath the motor in the 3rd generation 3.5L - not sure why they did this but love my '14 Taco!
I agree with you I have 181000 miles on 2007 Tacoma and the idea of have to remove the skid plate every time I have to change the oil to get to the filter is ridicules . Plus it is a messy sock type filter and for that reason alone I wouldn't buy this truck . I use conventional oil and change it every 4500 miles .
Bill Evans I feel like that is coming. They probably figured why go all out at first especially when most people want just a good ol reliable yet capable Tacoma. Then when and if sales slow bust out the all new twin turbo v6 w manual trans to get the rest of the consumers that want more performance
I would speculate that The reason the trans shifts so much is because of the lack of real world torque you get from the Atkinson cycle engine that comes in the 3rd gen truck. I'll keep my 4.0 second gen
@@goforbroke2I’m guessing you haven’t driven the 3rd gen? It’s transmission engine are trash. You can be doing 35mph around town and out of the blue it’ll shift to the wrong gear leaving you gutless. It happens at all speeds not just around town.
The Tacoma has the exact same suspension and steering from 2005 to 2020. Same Inner and outer tie rods, upper and lower ball joints, same control arms, stabilizer links and u-bolts. Bullet proof parts that are safety critical. Safety is and should always be #1 in a vehicle.
I didn’t know if to purchase a 3rd gen or 2nd gen but ended up going for the 2nd gen 2015 crew cab due to a old school look , it’s been great and has a huge aftermarket , great reliability also , in the end all Tacoma’s look great just depends on personal opinion.

I have 120K on my 2015 and won’t trade it for a 2024! The 1GFR V6 is as strong today as the day I picked it up. I have added a number of after market upgrades that keep the truck fresh and on point with new electronic options! Added top grade leather seats the day I got it and they are still as nice as new! Long live the Taco!
Test drove a 2019 Taco and will keep my 2013 Trd Off road. My 4.0L and 6 speed trans is much quicker and smoother and the old school oil filter is a plus since I change it. Liked the new safety features until I found out that the TSS has a lot of issues. Not going to change based on style, entertainment, or maybe 2 mpg improvement.
@@sergekrasovski3700I had a 2018. Basically the radar sensor would go off whenever there was nobody in front of you while driving or sometimes it would display an error message that it wasn’t working. It was a simple free fix. Nothing super serious.
My 2015 Tacoma has been great to me so far. Bought it used with 58,000 miles on it which is basically nothing. I like older vehicles, this gives me a good middle ground between old-school reliability, as well as some creature comforts like a backup camera/Bluetooth, etc. In reviews people have complained that the ride of the 2nd gen is too harsh, but I haven’t felt much at all. It handles how I’d want it to- like a solid body-on-frame truck. I wouldn’t say that I’m a die-hard Toyota fan who wouldn’t buy anything else, however it would be hard for me to give up my current truck.
@@kyzerw3816 93k is still really good! Anything below 100,000 is great, especially for used Tacomas. Even those above 100,000 are usually still really solid. Mine is around 60,000 now and nothing has gone wrong so far. Hopefully yours is treating you well
I had an 02 SR5 Access cab, 4 cyl, 5 speed, completely stock and I loved it. I would still have it if I hadn't hit black ice and rolled it. It had 126k and the check engine light literally never came on, not even one time. The only problem it ever had was a leaking seal in the rear axle which cost just under 400 bucks to fix. Still had the original clutch and brake pads on the front. Now I have an 18 Taco TRD Offroad. Some things I like better, some I don't. The gas mileage is actually pretty good and the heated seats are great for skiing. I wish I could have got a manual transmission, not offered in a long bed. The gearing in this truck makes it feel like it's always one gear too high, however the ECT mode helps a ton. I absolutely hate the keyless, push-button start. When you stop and turn the truck off it shuts everything off, including the radio. This is highly annoying. I prefer the smaller size of the first gen as well. I'm not a big truck fan. I tow an 8' trailer with my dirtbikes so I don't need a large truck. If it were smaller it would be lighter which might help the gearing issue a little.
I have a 2006 4x4 srt extended cab that I've had for about 7 years. I've put 60k miles on it with a lot of off roading and added steel front and rear bumpers w/winch as the only mods. A friend of mine got a 19 model and says the only complaints are low mpg, odd shift points, and throttle lag. If I had a choice between a 2nd gen and a 3rd gen I'd take the 3rd gen, sell it and mod a 2nd gen the way I want it.
263,000 miles on my 05 TRD, the drivers seat is f^&ked but the truck just keeps hammering, so hard to believe they did away with the 4 liter, I might have to stay below 2015 used when I get another taco. thanks for the vid.
2012-2015 exterior hands down sexier than the newer models. 3rd gen is a little nicer then the 2005-2011 body styling. 3rd gen interior blows them all out of the water.
How long have you had ? Any problems or things to be weary about before buying? Things that needs to be replaced or seals random stuff to look out for on this year?? looking at one right now. So im debating on that vs frontier with 35k less miles n 5k cheaper....both 4x4. Thanks for the help
xavier2528 I had it since new! Never had problems! 2016 and up still has many recalls and people complain about power! Frontier is way cheaper resell value and cheaper quality truck! Tacoma is higher price but it’s well worth it!
@@xavier2528 I also have a 2015 tacoma. Got it brand new back in 2014 and currently have 37,000 miles on it. No issues whatsoever. My only complaint is that I wish there were more aftermarket parts because I like modifying my cars.
its not tho its just the gearing. the 3rd gen is geared different to help with fuel economy. i see people re gearing the differential and changes the whole experience
2nd gen is lighter and smaller. If you have to do a 5k re gearing job on a 3rd gen to make it as fast then you're kinda defeating the purpose as a 3rd gen already is gonna run you 10-20k over the 2nd.
I have 2013 Tacoma Pro with the supercharged 4.0 Litre. I bought it as a work tool for negotiating old wagon trails in National Parks. I've also used 4Runners and other non-supercharged Tacomas on the same trails. The parks managers decided to try 2016 Tacomas. Almost every driver has found them difficult to control in slippery and technical situations. The 3.5 V6 has poor torque at low and walking speeds. When throttle is applied for more power it provides a surge causing a loss of control unlike the 4.0L with excellent throttle control.
P.S., the ergo mechanics in my Tacoma are poor and unlike most Japanese vehicles. The switch to ceiling mounted controls on the 2016 are almost impossible to use when the vehicle is bouncing up and down and swaying back and forth. And yes, the seats cause fatigue and pain.
They're both nice. I have a 2010 with 98k miles and no real problems. I'm not someone who falls into the always needs something new trap, so i'll just see how long mine lasts and keep my paid off truck.
I live in orange county california and the keeping up with the jones' is VERY prevalent here. When the 3rd gen came out everyone and their brother's traded in their 2nd gens to drive the newer and "better" truck. It is insane how many 3rd gens are on the road here. Way more than 2nd gens for sure.
I just bought a 2014 TRD off-road with 68,000 miles, an absolutely beautiful spotless inside and out pyrite mica in color Tacoma, cream puff, and love the 2nd Gen look over the 3rd Gen just saying 😀 absolutely feel lucky to find and purchase it and love being a part of the Tacoma family alot of trucks will take you into the desert but only one will get you out Toyota baby 😅
Bought a 2017 TRD Sport ext cab. Was torn between that and the new Ranger but my wife said "You want all the bells and whistles or something that's going to last 300k plus miles and still be worth more than a Ford with 150k miles" She had a point. I love my Taco and will never look back. I know the scoop is fake but it still looks great.
Like the styling of 3rd gen, unfortunately the test drive turned me away... Feel like it has a lot less torque ... Reminded me of driving a Hyundai Tucson sport.
@@vaughnrice973 I'm only just recently looking into this through Nitro Gear. I'm really on the fence about buying a 3rd gen because I then have to regear ($1,500 plus labor) to get it to behave. Seems like Toyota was really chasing that EPA rating and let the powertrain suffer. Curious about regearing vs retune. Outside of that, it seems like these are fantastic trucks.
I just bought a 2014 and so far I love it. Fuel mileage isn’t the best (about 18 mpg), but it’s a truck. Mine has high mileage on it but you’d never know by the way it drives and feels on the road.
Loved both my 2nd and 3rd gen...but If I had to pick which one was best...I would pick the 3rd gen. Technology on the 3rd gen is a lot better and to me the overall look is better. Shifting issues with the 3rd gen auto could be resolved by Toyota if they would gear this truck appropriate to the 3.5L power band and torque curve. I believe 4.88s or 5.29s would pretty much eliminate gear hunt. Toyota won't change this due to federal regulations and mpg requirements. With that being said I still give the truck 👍👍 thumbs up!
Toyota put the 3.5 liter atkinson in the 3rd gen in search for the future federal minimum mpg regulations set for 2025. President Trump just overturned it so now expect anything for the 4th gen tacoma. They were hopong the 3.5 liter would be as powerful or better and more efficient than the 2nd gen 4.0 liter.
I have a 3rd gen TRD Sport V6 access cab with a manual trans. No issues with the manual, glad I didn't get an auto trans. The rear end is a 4:30 ratio, not the 3:90 found on the auto V6.
The 4L 1gre-fe motor is a great motor! It's a lot more responsive and only weighs 366lbs w/fluid! then the new 3.5L and regardless of horsepower they both have the same torque rating except the Gen2 is lighter overall! If you want big horsepower gains get a super charger or scrap them both and drop a 2jz Supra motor in there!
My feedback on 2nd and 3rd gen is the power I like the 4.0 better than the 3.5 it has more punch from the bottom end i understand the 3.5 suppose to be more of a gas saver/ economy friendly/ God knows what else they tried to accomplish but all I can say is 3.5 fail but I still love my 2016 tacoma.
Cool Cool... Nicely put. I have the 2nd and 3rd TRD Off Road versions. 2nd gen transmission is easy. The 3rd gen, if you turn on the ECT is close to the 2nd gen, but it's not the same. I prefer 2nd gen transmission. Both great trucks.
Drove 2018 Gen III Pro vs 2015 Gen II Pro. Ended up with 2015 Pro not even comparable. Money wasn't issue driveability was and Gen III truck wasn't even close to Gen II. Only way is get a manual in Gen III. Fuel economy was same.
I am stuck in this position right now. I am looking for a Tacoma. I am between a 2nd gen '14-'15 TRD Sport or a 3rd gen '16-'17 SR5 - both with the double cab. They are both around the same price but I am not sure which I will like better? Can someone help me out? I will be using this as a work/daily driver vehicle (I am an electrician) - Is the 4.0 liter a better engine for long term? Are their major differences between the 3.5L and the 4.0L? The majority of my driving will be on the road but I do go overlanding/off-roading once every 6 months or so....Edit: This video and all the comments, made me want a 2014-2015 2nd gen Taco! 3rd gens need rear end re-gearing from the go… i’ve owned both , still own 09 2nd gen , manual transmission… 2nd gen ran circles around my 2017 and got better gas mileage… 🤔
The 4.0 was a great motor no doubt. There have been some anomalies with the 3.5, but so far, it's proven to be a solid choice. It wasn't a newly developed engine, its the well known 2GR-FKS. Proper maintenance is key. I haven't heard of issues with the 3rd gen, and the ones we do hear about can't be written as Toyota problems and not owner caused issues.
@@alexludwig1583 The 3.4 was a great engine. With a manual transmission it had all the power a first gen needed. Although I always wanted to throw a TRD supercharger on it.
I have the second GEN I’ve driven the third GEN not much of a difference a second GEN has more power and has looks They both look great it’s just preference and I prefer the second GEN
From what I understand the 3rd gen has problems with the automatic transmission constantly hunting gears. I personally have a stick shift 2nd gen, love it.
2nd gen has a better performance since it has the 1GR-FE 4.0L Engine but the 3rd gen has the slightly better fuel efficiency. I would go for the 2nd gen since it has a better engine and faster.
I think we can ALL AGREE weather 2nd or 3rd gen everyone here pretty much is an avid Tacoma driver and we all really enjoy this particular truck as a whole it does not have to be great at just one single thing which it’s not BUT it’s GODDat doing a lot in my opinion much better than the competitors out there I use to be a die hard GM fan grew up driving GM trucks now you couldn’t pay me to drive a GM I would not trade my TACOMA for any other truck out there so I really think we can all agree the Tacoma in whole is a great platform!

"liked' and already "subscribed" loved the torque from my 2nd gen tacoma (08 trd), but love the mileage and creature comforts of my 3rd gen (2017 trd sport), but I like my wife's 2019 4runner's comfort in and out access even more so.... and her's still has the same or similar 4.0 torque as my 2nd gen.
Very happy with my 2008 2nd gen. Looks on both are great but I give the edge to the 3rd gen. But with the power train I believe I would enjoy driving the 2nd gen more.
The thing about Tacoma’s is the little things arnt supposed to look exspensive they spent more on what’s under the hood than the the other and that’s what I like that’s why they last

Same here! Had an access cab 2007 back in the single, it's all about me and whoever I am dating days. Pregnant with our first son in 2016 and I got a double/crew cab. How times change. Funny how now the double cab is popular and nobody wants the access cab.
Had a 99 4Runner ( same power train as the 1st Gen Tacoma ) was great but needed a truck and bought a second Gen tacoma and put almost 500k and now on to a third Gen and I’m loving it too … time will tell if it can get that type of longevity out of it but history says yes ….. I gotta add I have a Toyota matrix with 300km as well that I use for my daily commuter
2nd gen due to the engine and gearing. I have a 2007 4l and 2022 trd off road and the new 2022 is annoying as hell going uphill. It's gutless, also the shifting programming is rediculous. I have to pop it into manual and control the shifting myself before i lose my mind.
Seems to me the only “gripe” people keep mentioning with the 3rd gen is with the automatic and how you have to push your delicate tootsie too hard on the go-go pedal. The other one is it “hunts” for gears on hills. There are two ways to solve both of these. One...”push harder on the accelerator, Nancy” The other is “in the mountains put the lever in S and shift manually”. In other words, it’s a truck, drive it like a man. Otherwise get yourself a Honda Ridgeline!
Seriously, I 100% agree. I have a 2020 and really don't see the big gripe with the drive train, the thing drives solid as a rock, you literally just need to press the pedal a little harder when you want it to downshift, that's it, hey look, incline is coming up maybe i should press the pedal in a little more so it shifts??? lol these fruitcakes just need to learn how to drive.
I had a 2013 Tacoma and traded it in for a 2020 Tacoma. The 2013 had more inside storage behind the seats and a couple of compartments in the dash for small stuff. I have also noticed my 2013 had better pick up and smoother transmission gear changes. Both are great trucks, when this one turns high mileage I will probably trade it in for another Tacoma
Super informative video. I own a 2014 4x4 sport four door long bed and I love the truck. I test drove the 3rd gen and went with the 2nd gen because I preferred the seats and tranny. My 2014 shifts beautifully and I can drive it all day under 3,000 rpms.
I'm currently looking to buy a used Taco and am stuck between getting a 2015 2nd gen or a 2016-17 3rd gen. I dont know if I can justify the cost, since the primary reason I'm getting one is a cost downgrade to pay it off in the next 18-24 months, with the reliability to last me the next 5-10 years. Just for perspective.. I'm coming from a 2019 Silverado 2500 High Country diesel with a 820 dollar payment that costs almost 100 dollars to fill up....every 10-12 days.

It’s got 106K miles, has been garage-kept, and looks like nothing’s ever been in the covered-bed. He wants $16K for it which seems reasonable for a double-cab in that condition. It even has leather seats the dealer installed even though it wasn’t an option for that year/model. Other mods include a new stereo w/sub-woofer, Bluetooth, and back-up camera. I’m really torn because I love my ‘13 Avalon. I just get tired of having to borrow a truck for occasional projects...know what I mean? On the other hand I don’t want to be like 50+ % of people who drive trucks and never use them as trucks. Happy New Year, Dude!
@@jrh11254 106k is nothing for that truck, even being 15 years old it's still got a ton of life left in it. Having said that, 16k seems a little high to me and I'd imagine you may have difficulty financing a number that steep on a vehicle that old. The 4Runner I found (which is commiserate in value to Tacomas) is a 2012 SR5 2wd with 72k miles on it. Body has some dents and dings, and I paid 18k for it. From you description, the Tacoma is definitely in better condition, however 35k miles and 6 years difference for only a 2k dollar difference doesn't quite add up to me. I'd say hop on cargurus.com and check out prices on there. That's where I found mine, it's a great resource. And happy new year to you as well!
Possibly why the 4Runner hasn't been updated since 2009, trying to get an acceptable transmission for the 3.5 before they roll it out so they don't get all kinds of complaints like they did with the Taco. I think the truck looks better personally. And those cloth seats do look very cheap. I always get leather or "fake leather" as they have in the 4Runner. If I were you, I would replace those cloth seats with Katzkin leather. I've seen a couple of vehicles with this leather (F-150 and Wrangler Sahara) and it looked fantastic.
Still driving my 1st gen 2000 4 cylinder automatic extended cab with 181,000+ miles. Had the 1985 and 91 with 5 speed 4 cyl and 95 and this 2000 with 4 cyl automatic, all extended 2 door cab. Maybe someday I'll need to move up newer but this one runs great!

Third gen is underpowered 3.5 vs 4.0 in 2nd gen. With 3rd gen , you'll be pressing the gas pedal deeper to get more power out of it debunking the claim that it's better in fuel economy..
I bought a new 2018 Tacoma extra cab with manual transmission 6 speed. Before I bought I tested the auto transmission and it was horrible. Couldn't make up it's mind where it wanted to drive. Up front, I don't like automatics of any description hence the 6 speed. So far I've got about 66000 kms on the truck. About 10,000 kms was towing a camper. Consumption wasn't great but I could live with an equivalent of about 19 mpg and that's imperial or "real gallons". Alone but with about 1000 lbs of gear in the back, plus the topper, I'm getting 7.8-8.2 kms/l according to the on board computer on the motorway at around 120 kph. What don't I like? The initial acceleration, due to the Atkinson cycle, is piss poor unless you really stand on the loud pedal but then your consumption goes to hell in a hand basket. The cruise capabilities are excellent especially the interactive capability. I don't like that the cruise doesn't kick off when the clutch is depressed. Nearly caused two accidents when new before I accepted/understood the quirk. Wrote to Toyota about it but they said nothing could be done. Acceleration on the road is excellent, drop a cog or two and the thing's a jackrabbit with brakes to match. I was disappointed to see Toyota USA decided to revert to drum brakes on the rear instead of discs. Retrograde step in my opinion. Comfort wise I find the seats acceptable. I'd heard detrimental comments about the earlier "corolla" seats but I've spent 8 to 9 hours in the seats with little discomfort. The GPS is terrible. It doesn't learn a bloody thing. Three years of going the same way home and it still wants me to go 5 kms out of my way to get there. Toyota gave me an update foc but it made no difference. Mind you my 2016 Mazda 6 's GPS is just as bad. The reverse camera is great. I wish there was a forward one for parking as I can't tell where the front bumper is in relation to parking signs, bollards or meters. Haven't hit any yet but am invariably 2-3 feet away from where I'd like to be. Other trucks I've owned or driven:- 1990 Isuzu standard cab. Lovely truck except no airconditioning. 300,000+ miles before I traded. 2005 Chev Colorado 5cyl 5 speed. Good truck except for a hesitation in the engine at about 2000 rpm or 110 kph that gm couldn't/wouldn't find. Traded it for the Toyota at 250,000 kms. 2008 Ford Ranger. Passable truck but auto transmission due to being a company truck. Acceptable but not my first choice. If I was to buy another it would be another Toyota Tacoma but this one will probably be my last.
Out of all of all of them I like the 2013 trd sport, im 18 so maybe im used to a aggressive look, the 2016-2020 just doesn't look good, the interior is nice but idk, I only like the trd pro tacomas in 2020 but the rest of the trims i don't like
