Is the Aputure B7c Bulb Good? || B7c vs Phillips Hue RGB bulb

I've been curious to know if the Aputure B7C bulb is better than something like the Philips Hue RGB bulb or even a random RGB bulb off Amazon. So, I decided to compare these RGB lights and figure it out for myself!
I think most people know the Aputure B7C is for filmmakers, but I wanted to see if it truly was by testing it for flicker and accuracy, along with the other bulbs.
Hope it helps others out finding which RGB bulb is best for filmmaking scenarios!

Super helpful video! We were wondering about this for a while now. B7C it is. An additional benefit is that is has a battery built in, so you can use it even if the practical light has no cable which can be handy on set.

I did these tests for myself, but with like 12 options. For video the Aputure light wins, hands down. Great color accuracy, no flicker, amazing app, and the fact that they have an internal battery make them worth the money. Literally the only thing I didn't like was that you can't control them with Alexa. However, LIFX bulbs (also somewhat expensive) came in a close second. They are super bright, reasonably color accurate, nice saturated colors, great app, and at full power they have almost no detectable flicker even on camera. I chose to go with LIFX for most of my home and office, and use aputure for special use cases.

If you think you want the extra boost of output, then go astera, otherwise the Aputure is pretty bright enough for indoor settings that are not already too brightly lit.

If you don't need a battery but want a cheaper option the PavoBulb just had a price drop to $45 for a great RGBWW bulb, still has the delay issue turning on, and they also make a really handy magnetic mount you could use with the B7c too. I'd also wonder about the Astera FP5-NYX, it's $105 dollars but does it turn on instantly? Seems like it would be the high end option, but I'd need to test it, also on the plus side it looks like a normal light bulb, so if it has to be visible on set it would look weird or bulky.
@FellowFilmmaker
@FellowFilmmaker Год назад
I'm not sure about that one as I haven't tested it before, sorry

I having issues at my new apt where my Wi-Fi connection is super unreliable. So when all my hue light lose connection for any reasons I have to pair all my lights again. Now that’s a pain. I’m working on replacing them with B7c’s just to get off of wi-Fi. The Bluetooth mesh network is no joke from Aputure.

Any idea why such a low CRI at the low end end of the b7c? Seems odd!!
@FellowFilmmaker
@FellowFilmmaker 3 года назад
Great question! I noticed the others were low in that end of the spectrum as well. I'm not entirely sure why its so low. CRI is a tricky one to deal with, its a little helpful, but not the most accurate form for figuring out if something really is accurate as a light source/type. In any case, the color looked just as any other light doing 2700K (to the eye) - I've seen worse lights that rank a higher CRI but have a terrible looking color. So honestly, I'd take the CRI with a grain of salt. Its there more or less to give a rough idea of what's going on, but in the end doesn't have a full picture. If that makes sense.

One issue for practicals is that the light only comes from the top section of the bulb and so the light in the lamp isn't even across the shade -- like a normal lightbulb would be... There's obviously more light at the top of the shade and a darker area beneath. This is a shame.

I bought a B7c bulb and have been disappointed, never been able to connect to the light with the app. I've only been able to use it with the buttons on the bulb. My experience with the B7c has led me to switch entirely to Godox, won't buy another Aputure light. I own several Godox lights and they work well.

OK this is kind of a weird review. At first great information was given. The cheap light doesn't that bad regarding flickering and CRI compared to Philips and suddenly....."I never used it, it is a piece of junk and a waste of money". Yea....thanks for your opinion, but shouldn't a review show WHY this is the case? Someone who considered buying the cheap solution didn't learn a lot. Expensive is good, cheap is bad, no reasons given. Still, thank you for talking about this topic.
@FellowFilmmaker
@FellowFilmmaker 3 года назад
I suppose to me if there is flicker it deems it useless, because any flicker is distracting. So I'm going to, as a filmmaker, use the one with no flicker. It wasn't a matter of cheap vs. expensive. It was a matter of which actually works in a scene. :) Hope that makes more sense of it for you
@maksimwalter9210
@maksimwalter9210 3 года назад
@@FellowFilmmaker Thanks a lot for your answer. As you have shown, there are shutterspeeds with no flicker. I think most people know, that a light designed for that purpose will be the better solution then some workaround-bulb. So it would have been nice to know, if it is possible to make the scene work with the amazon light and what effort it would take. Then anyone could decide to pay the higher price and go with the easy solution, or pay the low price and take the effort to go with the cheap solution. And i think the price is always a factor to consider in filmmaking :)
