No....and yes. In some areas the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K actually has the advantage over the 6K Pro. Sometimes it's only a small advantage and sometimes it's a big advantage. In this video I'll talk about these advantages and how they effect filming.

A few additions: 1. The file sizes. A lot of people don't realize the difference of cost in media when comparing these cameras. 2. The feel of the footage (this is VERY subjective, so take it with a grain of salt). The look of a shot is affected by resolution - P4K is softer than the P6K due to the lesser resolution. Showing each hair and skin detail of a talent is sometimes detrimental. On the other hand, in a product shot you might want to squeeze out every inch of detail.
@ChristopherMichaelLaw
@ChristopherMichaelLaw 2 года назад
Both good points. I didn't go into resolution because of all the compression options, thought it might get a bit complicated for this video, but I agree that media costs and storage need to be considered. I'm a big fan of how the footage looks from the P4K. People who use the Alexa a lot talk about the difference between detailed and sharpness. I feel the P4K is detailed without being over sharp. But as you said, it's subjective.
@stevenfries7032
@stevenfries7032 2 года назад
all of which is easy to edit in post production if you dont wish to have that kind of sharpness. you can literally take away details in DR with softness filters and Mid tone details that pretty much match the 4k. I have done this between my 6k pro to match me GH5 details. its rather easy.
@user-zv7lm8uk7h

EXACTLY. In wasy the p4k is sharper too because generally smaller pixels, it really is not even scientific it depends on variables. I went from a 6kpro to a p4k and it can be just as sharp is not sharper. By the way sharpness isnt even what people look for in cinema cameras.

hey any camera nerds out there... I have a bmpcc 4k and just bought the sinui 35 anamorphic mft mount. I usually use my metabones ef mount to mount all my canon glass and that has worked great up to this point... However, I did by an adapter for the sinui 35mm to convert it to eft (it is semi permanent so i haven't done that yet, was hoping to get some clarity). I am just wondering if there would be any change or benefit to the actual image if i were to go from sinui 35mm (MFT) -> metabones ef -> MFT or if i should just take the metabones adapter off when shooting with this lens,.... and then just put the adapter back on when i use my other lenses that are ef mount. I thought that metabones adds a stop of light or something like that? Am i crazy? Probably. Thanks yall

I have used both extensively and must say that the without looking at the price difference the 6K is far better than the 4K. The tilting screen, the built in ND’s, the better quality, the ability to record better in low light. Its not even a question that the 6K is better but there’s nothing wrong with that, the 4K is still amazing for what it is. It’s like looking at the iPhone 5 VS the newest iPhone, both are amazing for the time they were built and can be respected but the newer one is just plain better.
@ChristopherMichaelLaw
@ChristopherMichaelLaw 2 года назад
It's true, the 6K Pro has some great features. I love the built in ND's too. But to claim "the newer one is just plain better", without also stating what it is better for, doesn't mean anything. If it's better for your needs - that's great. But everybody's needs are different and every job has different needs. In some areas the 4K outperforms the 6K Pro, and in others the 6K Pro has the advantages.
@stevenfries7032
@stevenfries7032 2 года назад
@@ChristopherMichaelLaw the advantages that the 4k has over the 6k pro is very insignificant. 6k pro, larger sensor and better for low light. Can use native APSC and full frame lenses without a speed booster. Internal ND filters which saves a lot of time and hassle. Not to mention high in quality. Tilt screen with BETTER overall brightness. the ability to not use the screen at all and use the add on view finder. The added audio inputs. the obvious ability to record 6k and 5.7k. better picture quality when downscaling to 4k. oh and a slight bump in dynamic range too. its not because it is newer. it is superior in most regards....and it reflects that in price point.
@ChristopherMichaelLaw
@ChristopherMichaelLaw 2 года назад
@StevenFries It could be superior in a million things. Doesn't change the fact that in the areas I talk about in this video the BMPCC4K is better. Things that you find "very insignificant" other people might find significant and the things you find significant might be insignificant to other people.

@stevenfries7032 2 года назад
@@ChristopherMichaelLaw but it’s not really better in 4K. You can literally record 6k or 5.7k and down convert to 4k and the picture quality compared to native 4k recoding is better. Yes, the crop is terrible for native 4k recording. But a lot of folks who know what they are doing are going to be recording 6k and down covert if needed. Let’s be real.

I think, for most of us laymen that can even barely afford a set up like any of these. An important factor is actually lens possibilities. Yes, the 4k has MFT and the 6k has EF. But have you ever had a look at the prices of full frame EF glass? Those lenses go new for roughly the same price as the camera itself. Let alone if you want a cinema lens. Im talking ofcourse about not buying a second hand 50mm 1.8 II for 65 $. While for the MFT mount there are amazing MFT lenses out there such as the Meike cine for 300 each which are arguably better than a EF FF lens in terms of image.

I’m wanting advice I’m shopping around for the 4K even though I worked on the 6K but I’m finding suppliers keep pushing me onto the 6K and aren’t helping me with finding a suitable lens for the 4K. Im starting a small advertising business to make vids for peoples Facebook pages and ideally want a versatile lens that is good for close up interviews as well as good for wide angle outdoor location shots. Im only starting out and want value for money. I found your video really helpful because I’m trying to keep all my costs to a minimum starting out. Please if you could let me know of a good affordable suitable lens I’d appreciate it. I was using for the 6K a canon 24-105 mm image stabilizer ultra sonic lens which was fantastic for what I needed. Just needing something that will have same versatility that’s not so costly ?

Buy the f0.95 and 1.2 lenses for the bmpcc 4k. They're absolutely gorgeous and make the image feel more like they were shot on a fullframe sensor
@hethfilms
@hethfilms 2 года назад
As a BMPCC4K user I can mostly agree with you on the points you make. I'm using the Canon EFs 17-55mm f2.8 with OIS and the metabones speedbooster ultra x0.71 and I'm really happy with the quality I get out of it. But there is one major downside many people forget about. The 6K Pro has built in ND filters. Something that's missing from the 4K and normal 6K models. And since all the BMPCCs do not have sufficent IR filtration you have to use external ND filters with IR cut, which makes that a quite expensive add on. If you, like me, use an APSC lense with a speedbooster on the 4K you can quickly run into the problem of vignetting when using filters in front of the lense. If you use the x0.64 speedbooster with APSC you will have strong vignetting for sure. I use a mattebox with 4x5.6 cinema filters to get around the vignette, but a single IRND filter costs easily around 250 bucks. And that's just one strength. So you would need several of these and have to switch them everytime you want to adjust for exposure changes. I was thinking about getting the new Tilta mirage with VND. But since that VND filter does not have IR cut it would not work with the BMPCC4K. So you would still need an extra IRND cinema filter in front. These are all extra costs you have to consider. So that's a clear point for the 6K pro with internal ND filters. The ease of use, no vignetting etc. all really hard to reproduce with the bmpcc4k when opting for a speedbooster. Of course you could go for a full frame lense on the speedbooster, but those lenses especially if you want a run and gun setup with a zoom lense with 2.8 or better throughout the whole range and image stabilisation will get exponentionally more expensive. So to make a long point short, the BMPCC4K does give you more options in regards of what lenses you can choose but it does come with a price and it's own set of problems. With the 6K Pro you can get around with just slapping on a good APSC EF lense, use the internal NDs, use the flip screen (it's good and bright enough for outside use) and not have to think about all the work arounds you would have to do with the 4K model.
@ChristopherMichaelLaw
@ChristopherMichaelLaw 2 года назад
Yes, the internal NDs on the 6K Pro are a massive plus point. It's the main reason I bought the camera. I'd love to see a 4K Pro with built in ND but I don't think it will happen. I'm no expert on IR and I've read conflicting things about it (cloud cover reduces it vs cloud cover increase it - not to be confused with UV). My understanding is there is an IR absorption filter in the P4K it's just not very strong. Have you seen the Rawlite OLPF? It's an Optical Low Pass Filter and IR cut replacement filter for the camera - not cheap though.
@hethfilms
@hethfilms 2 года назад
@@ChristopherMichaelLaw Yeah I saw the Rawlite OLPF, price aside, the video showing how to get that thing into the BMPCC4K scared the living s*** out of me. :) Not touching that one. But I can definitely confirm the BMPCC4K has a really servere problem with IR pollution out of the box. When I first got it, I used an older VND with no IR cut and got really bad IR pollution with a very brownish tint to the whole picture, especially the shadows, black shirts becoming reddish etc. I personally would not trade my fully rigged BMPCC4K for a 6K pro at this point, but anyone starting out should consider getting the latest model and enjoy the internal NDs, the better screen and the larger sensor and resolution. There is quite the large amount of money to to pay to work around all the little prblems of the pocket cameras. The 6K pro got a few of those sorted out already.
@ChristopherMichaelLaw

@kprotsenko1877
@kprotsenko1877 2 года назад
@@ChristopherMichaelLaw Interesting. I had the original 6k (which I sold in order to upgrade to the pro) but I haven't noticed any strong rolling shutter. Sure there was some but only really visible when I panned fast which I normally don't do. When I was panning normally or just filming handheld, it seemed ok to me. But I guess it's in the eyes of the beholder - what seems normal to me may not seem normal to a more discerning user.
@ChristopherMichaelLaw
@ChristopherMichaelLaw 2 года назад
It's not so much in panning. It's that any little shake or wobble creates a strange jello effect - mostly on the edges of the image - maybe my hands are less stable than others - things in the footage can look squished, which really annoys me. I'ts hard to describe in words.
@kprotsenko1877
@kprotsenko1877 2 года назад
@@ChristopherMichaelLaw it sounds like an artefact of image stabilisation… it’s exactly for this reason that I avoid IBIS (and for a different reason - stutter while panning - I tend to avoid optical stabilisation). I haven’t noticed those things. However when I film handheld, I do use a stabilisation device - a thing that sits on my shoulder with a plate in front of my chest. It’s very, very basic but gets rid of micro jitters under 85mm FF-equivalent. On a related but another subject, do you find that overall you enjoy using the 4k more than the 6kP or vice versa? When you reach for a camera, and both can do the job, do you reach for which one?
@ChristopherMichaelLaw
@ChristopherMichaelLaw 2 года назад
Yes, it's to do with micro jitters. A little stabilisation when shooting fixes it. Your device seems like a good solution. I'm looking into building something similar but with a v mount battery as well. As for which i enjoy more, i'd have to say the 4K. There's no real science to this. The built in NDs of the 6K Pro are super helpful but the 4K is just more fun. Could be because the work flow is easier or maybe because of the smaller size or maybe it's all in my head!

I use the camera only in BRAW so I use the only 6K mode in full size sensor for 10%, the 90% of time I shot in 4K. So ise better to have a bigger sensor. Second MFT lenses are less expensive. I'm not with you on this review. The paramount reason for the Pocket 6k Pro being better than the 4k, is the image quality. Though Blackmagic Design claims that both cameras have 13 stops of dynamic range, it's very clear that this is incorrect, and that the 6k Pro has a significant advantage in dynamic range, having 1 stop more in the highlights and 1 more in the shadows. There are other reasons, but this is the most important one

@ChristopherMichaelLaw 2 года назад
I totally agree. If your only consideration is image quality, then the 6K and 6K PRO win hands down. The point I was trying to make, was that in some areas, the 4K can have an advantage. Not every area. Just some areas. And depending on the requirements of the job, it might be useful to understand them. For some people image is the most important, for others it could be getting the most out of their full-frame lenses (where a 4K and speed booster would be best) If I was filming a lot handheld I would pick the 4K over the 6K pro because I hate the rolling shutter wobble that effects the 6K heavily. I probably didn't make it clear enough in the conclusion, but I was trying to say "BETTER" or "BEST" is only important when asked with a particular requirement in mind. 80% of the time the 6K is a far better camera, but 20% of the time the 4K could be better.

Petru B. that's a bad take. Like, REALLY bad. There are examples in the video to show some areas of why some may lean more toward the P4K versus the P6K Pro. Another thing is that having a larger fan base doesn't equate validity. If someone online posts math videos and they are correct (showing formulas and all that) but has 300 subs is somehow less valid/trustworthy than someone with 3 millions subs saying 2 + 2 is actually 5, then your logic pinpoints one of the biggest problems with the YT tech and commentator realm. Amount of subs = validity. Not true at all. How many reviews out there have people posted about Sony cameras because Sony has been known to give YT techies free gear like cameras? Especially during the Canon vs Sony craze, when Canon refused to give out free cameras, but did agree to send out loaners. Points here are valid, for him. It's his opinion and well thought out comparisons. If anything, it's videos like this that would bring in more views and subs.
