Hey chap! Good review ;) to clarify some of your points for you... 1) build-it-yourself wired units are NOT Pro models; the technology is very different being Arduino based, so buyers should not expect the same experience as with the Pro models 2) wired play is not currently possible (you can play while charging, that's no problem, but the device is still using the wireless for it's communication) but we do have a future update in mind where we will introduce it. No idea when this will be yet though. 3) Cable - ha, we are actually sourcing some shorter charge cables which we will offer in the future. For the most part, people have cables aplenty (mobile phone charging/etc) so most people don't miss it, but we will look to add it as an option, no problem 4) Compatibility - pretty much all the non-TrackIR products out there rely on 3rd party software to make them work. Trackhat have partnered up with Opentrack to make a cut-down version of the software, for example. I know what you're saying though. If game developers just allowed joystick head-look it would be a much simpler life for all! Ah well, it is what it is. 5) Price - unfortunately for us, doing things the right way costs a lot of money (ie. testing and certification). We could have risked flouting the regulations and laws and just selling stuff without bothering, but we're trying to do everything "proper". Start as you mean to go on, kind of thing. It means we have to recoup that cost somehow, unfortunately, otherwise as a business we're not viable. We do try to keep the cost as bearable as we can.

Thank you for your input, and all much appreciated. You have clarified and corrected a number of things for me so I am grateful. Just to confirm that I do fully appreciate your costing, and find the EDTracker the most responsive of all options I have tested. I don't have the problem with the price just concerned that consumers might opt towards other similar head-tracking devices at a lower cost. I hope you guys not only get a big slice of that cheesecake but get the respect from game developers too and have better integration provided across the board. One thing you didn't mention...Raised LED's and the ability to add 6 DOF ? I appreciate it's no where near that simple, but is it theoretically possible for the future??? :-)
@brumster100
@brumster100 7 лет назад
Theoretically yes. The device has all the componentry on it to drive one or more IR LEDs, that is the easy bit. As you say, it's not that simple, because from there to a working product involves... holding those IR LEDs in a controlled point model which means a new, custom, ABS moulded enclosure (almost 5 figures development ££, believe me we've looked into it!). Then we need to design an IR tracking camera. Then test it. Then get it built... with another custom ABS moulded enclosure (same cost as above). Then what do we do about game compatibility? We would now be past joystick headlook and into the realms of custom APIs into each game that wants to support it, a la TrackIR and Tobii, so we've then got to convince game developers to adopt a new API and introduce it into their games. Like that will happen :). I know the suggestion will be "just use Opentrack" but as a commercial entity there are potential legal challenges there that we just don't want to get involved in... dependencies on a 3rd party, TrackIR IP and so forth. To cut a long story short, by the time we've developed it, we will be several tens of thousands of pounds down, 2 years down the line and the cost of the item to produce at *our* volume levels will no doubt result in a retail price more than EyeX or TrackIR anyway... :). So, "focus on your strengths" I think. We are more likely to look at facial tracking to supplement the MEMS tracking as this can then rely on using existing webcams the user may already have, coupled with open source face tracking APIs that are already out there... and/or in conjunction with 3rd party tools like Opentrack and FaceTrackNoIR if people want to. I think that approach is far more viable for us :) ;)

Hi mate, thanks for the review. Just ordered mine for Elite Dangerous. Reason I went for this product instead of IR tracking devices is my gaming setup: I play on a big screen/beamer and there's no way my wife will let me hang up a camera and run a long and ugly usb cable through the living room... So my wife thanks you for the review actually ;)

Well that was some sales pitch! A good sales pitch, that is, because I ordered one. Having just the three degrees is perfect for me because I move around on my seat so much that my view would be all over the place with six degrees of freedom, haha. All I really care about is fast response time.

Thanks for this review, I bought a pro-wireless after owning a DIY for sometime. Just got the pro-wireless today and it setup without any ballache whatsoever. Elite Dangerous wiped my profile so I had to setup my controls again but that wasn't a big deal. The pro-wireless is actually more responsive than the wired DIY and pretty much superior in every way and it came with a lead to recharge it. If you're wondering about a headtracking solution I can't reccommend this enough and just go for it and buy the pro-wireless, you won't regret it.

@@ManamalReacts - Nice one, I hope you have fun. On the issue of connection loss I use the trick of turning it on and off at the box, does the job everytime also if you're having problems during setup of the magnetometer it might be due to connection loss, I used my old extra long cable from when I used my wired DIY. The Wireless can now be used while plugged in and charging so if you're having trouble during setup I'd advise plugging in the cable.

Great review. I have had one of these for a month or so now. I got one the week they came out as well as also trying one on demo at Lavecon recently. I can confirm that on mine the on/off switch action is even as it was on the demo one I tried. I suspect you might have a demo model that has done the rounds and suffered all sorts of abuse. I have TrackIR and have had it for a number of years and even impulse bought a Tobii and so far I prefer the EDTracker as it seems so much easier to setup and get the results I want. However I have only used it on Elite Dangerous and FSX so far. I would like to try it on ETS2 and FS2017 but, as you say the lack of native support makes things a bit more difficult. I have not had any drift issues either so far. I have used it on top of a wireless headset which makes total wireless freedom.

Hi guys. I have a brand new DIY 9250 Edtracker using version 4.0.5. / DCS version 2.5.2 First I set up the Edtracker using Brumster100's video called "DIY EDTracker V4.0.0 Calibration (Magnetometer/9150)". Then I followed his video here exactly. Everyting in Edtracker is working great with everything set to 1 and smoothness 80 and response mode is set to Linear. Edtracker is working perfect face movement. The tracking seems super slow after I change the settings to 1 and 80 smoothness, but i think Brumster100 told us to do it that way on purpose for DCS. In Opentrack i do it exactly as he said. I was a little confused about what i should set the smoothing too cause i remember him telling us not to use smoothing in both programs. So I tried it both ways, First i tried it with the default smoothing on , then i tried with smoothing set to 0 and deadzone set to zero (opentrack) . When I'd get into DCS I turned off all the bad auto-assigning Switches it does to Edtracker . When I look around in the game everything moves way to sensative (fast) sometimes it would zoom me in too far, i tryed hitting reset view in edtracker and in the game it centered perfect but then it was all over the place again lol

My switch works fine! Regarding the not reconnecting after sleep thing, seems that it is a windows setting for USB power saving. On windows 10, First go into "devices and printers" in control panel and In here look for the EDTracker Pro Wireless. Double click it. Select USB input device and press "properties" near the bottom of the window. In the General tab near the bottom press the "Change settings" button. In the Power management tab there should be a tick box next to "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" Untick this box. Press OK. I don't know if a reboot is required or not. If you change the usb port then you have to repeat this procedure.

Brilliant review and brilliant device. I am definitely going to buy one but I want to wait a respectable amount of time to pass after their updates and maybe by then they'll even put a USB cable in the damn box. Speaking of the box, I noticed you struggling to get that dongle out of its little slot and I can almost hear your thoughts and I feel you were compelled to bang that box upside down on the table, LOL. The price is a little high, considering that this has almost identical components to what you can find in a quadcopter's flight controller. I can get a single PCB with a microprocessor, gyroscope, accelerometer, 2.4GHz transceiver, and 4 speed controllers for motors, for £23 (Eachine AIOF3_Brushed). You could swap the accelerometer for a magnetometer, and the 4 speed controllers for a USB Lipo charger (ie. a TP4056) without increasing the price by doing that. Meanwhile the remaining parts should cost very little: Case ~£2, lipo battery £1.50 (I can get 10 at 300MAh for £15), and the USB dongle ~£4. All those prices are retail (including shipping from China). If this was made on a single custom PCB, with components bought at wholesale prices, then I can't see any reason it should cost more than £30.
@SimUKReviews
@SimUKReviews 6 лет назад
+polar-lights could you post it to me for that price and make enough profit to fund the next development though??? Tbh they do provide the much cheaper diy cabled version for peanuts :-)

It's already been done for FPV RC models: hobbyking.com/en_us/quanum-3-axis-no-drift-head-tracker.html £28 compared to the £45 Edtracker Pro.

Nice review. You shouldn't really compare it to Trackhat, as I found it to be extremely light sensitive and had to return it. I can use the EDTracker in a fully lit room which is impossible with the Trackhat.
@SimUKReviews

+GlobusDiablo I compare only in the sense that they both provide head tracking options. EDTRACKER is unique in that it is the ONLY headtracking device that is not affected by ambient light, one of it biggest plus points.

Seriously considering head tracking as I am on a single monitor (32inch) and cannot go to triples or VR because of cost. I only do driving sims. My probably stupid question is....when you move your head....surely you are then not looking at the screen....so how does that work. Eg looking to apex of corner or out of side window....or do you just develop very subtle movements to get it to focus where you want to look?
@SimUKReviews
@SimUKReviews 5 лет назад
Excellent question. You nailed it, you adapt and subtle movement is all that is required. Check out all my reviews on headtracking, I recommend any and all of them.

So the 3 axes mean I can't get closer to my screen to look at tiny panels on my truck because of the missing camera that detects the distance? It sounded great at first but this really puts me off, I'm thinking about getting a Trackhat Clip Plus for ETS2.

Just wondering, how do you get ETS2 to let you keep looking out the window where you are looking at the back of the truck as if you are leaning out and looking towards the 5th wheel area? I got my EDTracker Pro working in ETS2, but it stops rotating right as you look square at the window. Just something I would like to fix. Oh, and what is that bus game you had in the video? Looks like it might be interesting to play. Thanks!

Thanks for the response. I'm not sure if that is it or not. When I am looking at the EDTracker Pro application, when I turn my head a little bit, it flips the head on the program around completely. I've set the view scaling to be rather sensitive at 7.00. Even when I recenter my view with my head turned all the way to the right, when I look to the left it still stops at the window sill. It's facing a little past 90 degrees left, maybe like 95. Right where it starts to move towards the window a little bit and looks more left a hair, but then stops right as you see the left side of the window frame. I don't think the curve setting is the issue. Something about the TrackIR setting or something is keeping it from looking towards the rear as it should. :( Only other issue I have is I want to sometimes NOT use the EDTracker Pro and still be able to use my numpad keys or mouse to adjust the view. I figured out it was because the g_trackir "0" was set to "1" in the config file. I just don't want to have to go manually reconfigure the file every time I want to use or not use the EDTracker. :( The standard "joystick" movement with just the default EDTracker Pro selected in ETS2 is very slow and sluggish and doesn't move exactly as you do. It's more like adjusting the hat switch on a joystick in the way it responds. If it were a little more fluid and precise I would be happy with that. Oh well, I guess I'll figure it out eventually. Unless you know something more about this than I. :) Thanks again for your reply. I appreciate it.

Thanks, you did confirm later in the video. Finding it hard to decide between EDTRACKER Pro Wireless or TrackIR. I like the idea of no wires on the ED. of course for TrackIR I can use the hat clip, even on my headset rather than the Track Clip Pro and this would be wireless also. So many pros and cons to both. Removing the cost issue which would you choose and why? And thanks again for an honest review.
@SimUKReviews

+Good Guys Gaming no problem. So really if cost isn't an issue the Trackir wireless is a great setup and prob the way to go. If however you want to keep costs down the tracker is great but does not have 9 dof. Alternatives include trackhat and UTC II both of which I have reviewed and both are very good.

Hi! I recived mine last friday and overall its great device but there is few flaws and im not sure where exactly problem is but its looks like its opentrack fault. Its little unstable...almost everytime when im put it on i need to click set level or even recalibrate it and even then sometimes ive see little drifting its most annoying in ETS2 when im looking max left trough the window i cant keep that view and its always trying to little come back to "front" view....dunno why maybe its opentrack "curves" problem i think direct implemantation w/o third paty soft can help. Second thing is like you said after stand by or simple turn off/on device i need to unplug and plugin dongle again. Next thing is graphical battery level. Exact percentage value will be great because that 3 lvl picture is just weird. Yesterday its went from half to red exclamation in 30 minutes and lost signal in the middle of the corner on Spa :P Its not really rock solid...i need too reset view few times here and there....and i dont know its lts lost signal or some interference from other devices? Still need to test it, but maybe reason is im using it on wireless headphones (bluetooth) ? Yestarday there was one more problem, everytime when i turn my head there was freeze (red exclamation on orange wifi icon) and full laptop restart was needed. But overall its really great device but just setting up is little annoying...and most annoying for me is opentrack...and that curves :P different for every game ;) There is so little tutorials online and most of them are 2 years old...so will be great if devs can make some new detailed tutorials for some most popular games like ETS2, AC, RRE, DCS...etc.

Tested yesterday for few hours on Assetto Corsa and RaceRoom and best stable effects i have on lower sensitivity something like 1/5 or 1/6 slider in EDTracker software, there was no drifting at all for 2 or 3 hours. In my opinion weakest point here is opentrack sometimes when EDT works super stable opentrack cant find "zero" point or little drift. Again direct implementation can resolve that problem ;) and im playing w/o any filter (Accela or smoothnes in EDT ui) And stiil i think ther should be better empty battery notification because again i lost signal in the middle of corner hehe :D Still need to more test and tuning because i need to set it up perfectly ;)

Nice review :) You can still get the wired kit from hobby components for £19.99 (hobbycomponents.com/home/440-diy-head-tracker-bundle#/kit_options-pro_micro_mpu_9250_s) , got one recently and the wife soldered it together (i dont know how but she is an electronic demon, lol). Bit fiddly to set up but its amazing the difference it makes :)

+MojoDude and how do you charge a wireless device in your house ;-)
@MojoDudeX

with wireless electricity? ;-) No, seriously, everyone has to many of these cables, so there is no need to make it more expensive by adding one to the package.

+MojoDude the cost element is a fair one, and having spoken to the dev this was their reasoning.
