Man I love your show, watching here from Australia. Can you do a show on 80series landcruiser only the diesel versions of 1hd, 1hdt and 1hd ft series. I own a 1996 HDJ81 24 valve. I've owned it for 22 years now and it's my safari truck whenever I visit my home in Uganda. Kudos bwana, keep up the good work

Good job! However there is no correlation between an automatic transmission and full time 4WD. We have some automatic cars that are part time 4WD and we also have some manual cars that are full time 4WD. Also, the automatic transmission is not the reason why you cannot activate the diff lock. Land Rover was just trying to move away from diff locks to traction control systems. It was a spectacular fail on the Disco 2.

One thing the Disco 1 and 2 were known for was rust. Disco 1 the body would rust badly. Disco 2 fixed the body rust issues but then it was the turn of the chassis to rust. It would be bad enough to completely collapse the rear end if not looked after. So ukinunua Disco 2 kwanza Ex-UK chunga, especially if the price is too low - the owner could simply be passing on the headache to you.

I was a Landrover nut, having owned 4 series 3s, petrol and diesels. What stopped me from continuing to drive them was when i drove a ford fiesta! I just could not believe how economical the fiesta was and how much further my money went. At the end of the day i still love adventuring and use motorbikes instead. (Royal enfield himalayan) it saves me a fortune

Hi, fyi, the auto transmition wich has 4 gears and lockup so is technicaly 5 speed has nothing to do with the lack of diff lock . the designers said "it was not needed as the traction control was so good, if you know how to use it", it still should of had the center diff lock though. Most (but not all) discos 2's still actually have the center diff lock in the transfer case, you just cant select it because the cable to acticvate it was removed, have a look on top of the transfer case, if the output shaft is there you can get a kit to engage it or build your own and you can then use the center difflock. they did re-introduce the diff lock on the later discos just before production stopped. try using the mode button in high range it will stay in gear a bit longer and rev a little higher like a sport mode if you can call it that lol and in low range it will lock it in the selected gear. In the uk we did not get the 4.6 engine this was reserved for the p38 Range Rover only, we only had the 4.0 v8 and the td5 but we did get the option of a factory manual gearbox on the v8. nice quality vid by the way, i enjoyed it,

The seating configuration is called stadium seating. Brilliant if you ask me. I love the disco from the start. Disco 3 would be ideal but price is way out there. The Td5 disco2 ticks all the boxes. Just so long as the engine is hardened from the knows cooling and EGR gremlins. Td5 voice note.... I love 5 cyls. Listen to audi and volvo 5cyls. Perfecto.

Being auto gearbox has nothing to do with CDL. 98 through 2000 models had CDL installed. Just no lever/actuator. If you purchase one from a disco 1 you will have the locker on demand. 2001/02 had no cdl and 03/04 depended on the version as it was an extra. Lever for auto and manual are diferent. So go for a disco 1 auto gearbox actuator if your disco 2 is auto. Go for manual if yours is manual. In the other hand, your TC is either not working or ypu are backing up your accelerator when the car begins to spin…keep the pedal on, where it was and you’ll see the TC working and making the car climbing that pile of gravel as if it was flat. Even without cdl that thing is nothing for that car. 2 cross wheels spinning at the same time is nothing with the TC working. CDL adds capability amd protection for your diffs. Too many people says TC is useless..but truth is most oart of the people doesn’t know how to use it. You’re climbing with 1/4 of accelerator->it begins to spin-> keep this 1/4 or a bit more. No back up/no full gas. Ypu’ll feel the “trac-trac-trac” and the car will climb 90% of the hills you want. Even some extreme ones(obviously lockers are better and safer for this purpose)… Cheers. Awesome car.

@checa160 Год назад
Reliabilitywise: I don’t know a lot about the petrol ones. But the td5 is, aprt of the two horrific mistakes they made in assembly(broken engines due to not using loctite in 2 bolts!!! and some of the first heads had problems with the cast so broke as well) it’s an awesome and reliable engine. Mine is 300000 km of hell and still working fine. Clutch changed to single mass(LOF clutches), stage 1 remap to around 165hp(easy to go to 180 or 200 hp with no problem…+5 cm susp and some offset. And YES, td5 is reliable. Just do the proper maintainance with oils and filters and your ok(believe me, I give hell to this engine everyday on and offroad). You’ll have to reinforce diffs if you want to give him punishment as if it was a nissan patrol. Diffs are weak. Period. Put some lockers in and you’ll fix it. Next thing would be halfshafts and cv joints. They’re not as weak as the old 10 spline ones. But they’re not nissan patrol ones either. So be ready to throw in some ashcroft hd ones if you go extreme. Rear transmision tends to fail by its fuse, wich is the trasmision damper between transmision bar and rear diff. Have a soare one or go for a double cardan like disco 1 or def. In this configuration you have a reliable go anywhere car. Buy yourself a good lr suitable diagnose tool for those 2-3 situations you need it to clear some faults(3 amigoes mod or when a sensor is broken and chamged, among some others) and your ok. Fuel economy on a td5 is by far the best of the category. Mine with all the add ons is 2450 kg and 165-170 hp. I drive it as if it was a stolen car, no mercy. And it does between 10.5 and 11.5 litres/100kms depending on how much offroad or, the worst situation, going up long hills at around 120-140 km/h. When using it in relax mode it’s barely 10-10.5/100km. This is with the 32” tyres(bigger and heavier to move), lift, fenders, winch, all the recovery gear, towing hitch and different balls and towing tools, tools, some soare parts…. If you know its weak points you can make it really reliable and easy to maintain… Cheers.
