Nice breakdown on the Princess Plus package! I’ve always thought it was a good deal and if you add the juice bar the mock tails and deserts casual dining specialty coffee like you pointed out alcohol cost is at the minimum. Also you’re not worrying about how much you will be billed for at the end of your cruise (although you can keep a daily track of your expenses)

Thank you for sharing the spreadsheet breakdown on the Plus and Premium packages. Very clear format and will be most helpful in deciding if I should go with a package or not. I am booked on a 32 day cruise, April 2024, so either package will be pricey. I got an amazing early booking discounted price which makes the package more appealing. Most likely I will go with the premium package so I can relax and enjoy the 32 day cruise. Thanks again for the great info.

Totally worth it. I'm a Triple Diamond Plus member combined with my status as a Princess Plus Premium Titanium Platinum founder's level member and found that if I upgraded to the Triple Premium Founder's level package while also adding the Crown Princess package, I was way ahead of the game, just as long as I always remembered to wear the special discount wristlet that you receive in the mail as a Neptune Level Premium member which you're eligible for after 100 cruises.

Booked my first cruise on Princess for September this year BEFORE knowing they had eliminated complimentary features I expected would be part of my standard fare. No one told me about these changes as I booked it just a month ago. This will most likely be my first and last cruise on Princess. This nickel and dime-ing aboard ship is leaving a really bad taste in my mouth. I also recently watched a video where someone who went on Princess recently explained how much of the "included" activities during the day are just sales pitches. He said that he and his wife never spent so much time watching TV in their stateroom. That was exactly our experience on our recent cruise on NCL as well. That's two cruise lines we won't be traveling again.

Same here I booked in June for a Sept Alaskan cruise on the discovery. Just now finding out about this and I'm so mad. They should not change it for people who booked before date of the new rules
@ORRadtech
@ORRadtech 10 месяцев назад
We booked a late August Alaskan cruise in March. Paid half then and the rest in April believing we were receiving a certain set of amenities. Then came the bait and switch. Instead of being grandfathered in we had amenities removed. It was frustrating and infuriating. To be clear, I do not fault anyone, cruise line, restaurant or whatever from pricing their goods or services as they see fit. But once you set a price and receive payment to renege and reduce what was promised is at a minimum unethical. We enjoyed our cruise a great deal despite having our options reduced but... This was our first and last Princess cruise.

Nice spreadsheet! For us the first time we purchased the Plus package it was just the gratuities, drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) and Wi-Fi for 1 item (which was all we really needed). At that time, it was $40 a day. Then about a year later it went to $50 a day and we felt that was still a good price. Very simple plan. Now that its $60 a day it still works for us because we can consume a lot of specialty coffees, water, some alcoholic beverages, sodas. Comparing what other cruise lines want to charge JUST FOR a drink package, this is still IMHO a fair price. I like the not having to worry about spending too much and this helps. Some of the restaurants like Gigi's, we love it and can see why Princess should make some money from it. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you, as someone who doesn't drink much just because cocktails are WAYYY too much sugar, this is showing me that buying each item individually will save me money rather than purchasing the package. I'm going to do a full add up of the potential I might spend on board for my 22 night transpacific and then compare to package myself, but it really seems ineffective to buy any package to save money. I'll also be bringing two bottles of my hometown's wine to share with friends I meet onboard, just paying for a cork fee across the table is much cheaper.

@macdaddymgiarc
@macdaddymgiarc 11 месяцев назад
@@mikebilon8208 I was on Princess in April, and you could bring one bottle per person (two per stateroom) and a 'reasonable' amount of Soda. I saw people walking on with two 12-packs and not being questioned. I brought a really nice bottle of wine and a bottle of real champagne (its vacation after all!) and had a drink or two on sea days. I had some drinks on the islands at a much reduced rate. I cannot see myself buying the packages as I think if I did I would be trying to maximize the benefit and drink more than I should. I know that if I want a beverage, I go buy it. I pay the cost (incl. the gratuity) and happily know I am consuming a reasonable amount of alcohol and it is not costing me more than a package would have. I also get away from wi-fi by going on vacation so I am happy to do without that package. If I need to get in touch with someone I would get free wi-fi at port. Otherwise, so happy to put my phone down and enjoy the time away. I like the packages because they make sense to many. Not for me, and that is ok!

Thanks for the breakdown! We're going to be on the Sun Princess next year and did go for Premium because we both need wifi, we both will have 3 to 4 drinks per day, and on average we'll probably do 1 or 2 casual dining options per day. We'll also do room service once or twice, and will have the medallion shipped to us for free so adding all of that up makes the Premium look like a good deal *for us*. One more intangible/emotional reason I lean towards doing it: if I did NOT do it I'd probably be obsessing over how much every drink and every casual dining experience would be adding to our total in order to see if we made the right decision, and that's not what cruising is all about for me. Even if we were potentially paying a touch extra for the package (which as I mentioned above I don't think we will be) I'd still do it for my peace of mind. It's all paid for and I can just relax and enjoy all the drinks and casual dining I want!

Well presented video on the PLUS and Premium packages. Things to consider -- if you are ELITE your wifi cost is reduced by 50%, so you might have to add in one more drink to break even on the Plus package. Without the package, every drink has an 18% gratuity added on.....including that $2.00 bottle of water and the glass of club soda. What I love about the PLUS package (prior to this change), is the ability to just walk up to a bar and get a bottle or two of water to take back to our room and have at hand during the night or early morning. What most people are upset about are the changes now with "STANDARD"...charging for room service, charging for things that were free last month, like Alfredo's Pizza. I have PLUS on my next cruise, will never use the things they just "added in" like exercise or fancy desserts. I always use the room service and that was the decision maker for me. Sharing with Let's Go Travel Tips.

@ACruisingGoodTime 11 месяцев назад
Thank you for the sharing and positive feed back! You make an excellent point about Elite, and surprisingly, the 1/2 price WiFi makes the break even drink only 2.8 drinks so, the same 3 drinks as shown in the video remains the same. Thank you for watching!

Depends on how heavily you drink and your level of health consciousness. Many of the guests are older people, particularly out of school holiday and major holiday periods. Many are watching cholesterol levels, blood sugar levels and older people are more likely to have issues tolerating lactose. The package isn't attractive to those people. Factor in that you can't just have the package for one, it has to be everyone in the cabin, and it can be an absolute waste of money. I can no longer tolerate lactose and anything high in fat, need to watch my sugar intake and don't drink alcohol. My husband has a cholesterol issue and doesn't drink heavily. We're better off just paying for the occasional drink for him and the odd speciality restaurant trip if we can book one. As Australians leaving from an Australian port, our gratuities are prepaid. So what exactly do we get for an extra $1320 or $2280 for the top package? A very expensive gym class?

I've done similar math when I got the Premier package (and that was before the casual dining/room service/ocean now kerfuffle) and I figured I'd break even with just my wifi usage, coffee consumption and 2 drinks a day. Now with the casual dining included (I like the Salty Dog and I had budgeted for going there for lunch or dinner at least 3 times during my cruise) so for me, the Premium makes sense. It might not make sense for those who really like the MDR or the free dining options and for those who dont drink or who want to disconnect from the wifi on their cruise. But for me, wifi is essential and on more than one device, drink package of some sort is essential, and I like specialty dining and Ocean Now. So for me at LEAST the Plus just makes sense, if not splashing out for the Premier

I always do 2 specialty dinning and the international caffe knows my coffee order by the 2nd day since they see me so much at least 6 coffies a day easy. An adult beverage here and there is good. I also pay for the worry free experience I like the option to get all of the things I want without adding to my stateroom charges. I'm actually one of the few that is really excited to now get the premere since I don't have to think about it and wonder if I should have lol.

We just got off Sky Princess. At booking we had the old old version of Plus. Princess wanted another $240 for us to upgrade to the new version. We declined. Did it make any real difference to our holiday? Not really. We missed room service at one point when we spent the afternoon on our balcony. The problem is the long term effect. We have been loyal to Princess but this has left a nasty taste in the mouth. No longer will we be looking at them first and choosing them over other lines regardless of price. If they wont honour existing bookings how can you be sure what you will be getting in a years time? ‘Sorry, the Princess Plus no longer contains alcohol’ Extreme? Possibly but can they be trusted? We showed faith in them at a time people didn’t want to cruise and booked 18 months ago out of loyalty. Never again

Adding to my last comment. If the package was purely drinks I would have not booked it. But because it includes so many other things too ( such as tips, wifi, speciality restaurants, photos, room service, exercise classes , etc etc) it’s amazing value I think. And no worrying about large bills adding up. I have seen other cruises charging a similar amount just for drinks.

Hi very helpful video, I'm deciding what to do as we were 10 day cruise, we usually had one drink a day, bottle water maybe two at the most, one soda, did enjoy our afternoon coffee . . .didn't use any of the other extras, deserts too rich, so thinking of booking another 10 day cruise cruise. Before I use to get coffee/tea package and water package which was fair price, wondering if they still do that. Thanks Jollean

as a retired EE myself, you did the math exactly as I always do it......... it always comes out the same......not worth it for us (Elite members) ....... although I have to look into the "new improved" WiFi upcharge..........we only use one device (wife's Ipad) on the ship........ what isn't fair is the "two per cruise" inclusions and the fact that some of the ships don't have some of the "casual dining" rooms. Princess knows what they are doing (trying to make $$) and have also calculated on average they will, by offering what's included and taking away what was included in your general fare........my suggestion to them as a Carnival Corp stockholder would be to just increase all the fares whatever it takes to make their $$ but maybe offer one simple "drink package" and an "economy package".........period....full stop

If Princess simply grandfathered those who paid for their cruise and explained the 'cost of doing business ' rather than a benefit, it may have been easier to swallow. Bear in mind that casual dining was already baked into the cruise price (pun intended).😉

with the medallions they can track and chart your every move, apparently they were loosing $ in the casual dinning rooms &/or calculated they could be a $$ maker. on a 14 day cruise we might do Alfredos twice on a ship that has it, $60? = 1/2 day for a couple's Plus package, Last 3 cruises were ships that didn't have indoor pizza anyway. IMO they just need to be honest and raise the fare prices and cut out the baloney 73 MP @@mikebilon8208

Thanks for the math. Doing my first cruise and it is 34 days! I don’t drink so definitely not worth it to me. A couple other things to think about when doing math: 1. Do both people in cabin drink? Both have to get same package! 2. Are they double tipping if they tack on another 18% for drinks if they already paying $16 days. 3. The long cruises are at a disadvantage. You said only 2 specialty and 2 casual meals over 34 days doesn’t seem “fair”! Also more port calls so harder to hit the minimum number those days. 4. This doesn’t have to do with me but encouraging 34 days of drinking just to reach a break even doesn’t seem healthy, but I get that is a choice. Looking for forward to my cruise and accepting that I will pay for my weekly pizza (or get the heat lamp pizza by the pool).

Going on a 15 day TA cruise in November. Did a lot of calculating back and forth. First thing: I have often heard that the wifi on TA cruises on all those seadays is not the best anyway due to low signals - so not really worth buying it. Second: I am not too crazy about the "enforced" tips aka gratuities. I booked a trip and paid for it. If I get outstanding service, crew is more than willing to do the "extra mile", THEN I am more than happy to give tips. (You wouldn't tip the waiter in a restaurant before dinner, would you?) So I am thinking of paying maybe half of the gratuities and spend the rest of the tips on the crew that makes my cruise outstanding and hand it over personally. Third: I am not a big alcoholic drinker. So I thought getting the soda package which includes also mocktails would work just fine for me. Forth: Don't drink much coffee, so the ideas is to get one of those 29$ coffee cards for 15 specialty coffees (1 for each day of the cruise) is enough for me. So: The plus or premium package just ist not right for me or did I forget anything?

Thank you, thank you for this expert breakdown. I have a 29 day cruise coming up and when I looked at the cost of $60/day I thought “no”. But this made me realize it might work. I’m not a big drinker (1 drink at dinner), but I do enjoy all the other beverages, especially the coffee. When you deducted the crew appreciation, which I’d have to pay anyway, and the wi-fi I was going to do without that made me think twice. Happy cruising and thanks.❤️

Excellent summary...however you overlooked the insurance effect. Cruise lines and others calculate the cost of trip insurance, recommended, based on TOTAL cruise cost. So, using Princess plus as an example the $420 upcharge for their "plus" package adds approximatly $40 (8 to 12%) to the insurance premium. This issue is overlooked by nearly everyone.

The hubs did a spreadsheet of all that we would need to be paying for anyways (gratuities, etc.)...and each of us having 4 drinks per day, a latte in the morning, bottles of water for the day and for excursions, etc. ... And for the WiFi as he needs to check emails for his Business and we'd like it to research our ports of call - It worked out to be VERY near to the cost of the PLUS Package...so we opted for the Plus Package. Made sense for us, as we were almost at $60 per day each anyways... The Pro's for the cruise ship, is now they have the money upfront...rather than at the end of the voyage.. We are going with another couple... our first choice is all inclusives in Mexico... We find cruising is very complicated to book, nickel/diming, changing itineraries/ports of call due to riots/unrest, all the upgrades, extra charges, apps, medallions, claw backs... We would rather just use our WestJet points, book the all inclusive and DONE...then GO...and enjoy...

I have a 32-day cruise that i booked, and I made the final payment three weeks prior to the announcement of the new changes. I think they should have grandfathered in the free room service and the free alfredos or gigs pizza. I know I got a great deal on my cruise price, but I can not see the value of the plus or premier packages on this long of a cruise. I am planning on taking a 10 day cruise to Mexico, and am traveling as a single. This is my 3rd Princess cruise and I understand that I have to pay double fare because I am traveling alone. My gripe is that I am paying for two peoples food for ten days, yet it's just me! And if I understand correctly, my Princess travel insurance is higher because I am paying a fare for two people. I don't drink much alcohol or even sodas and will not be using Wi-Fi on-board. So I am buying the 12 bottles of water and a six pack of canned sodas on-board which will cost me $30.00 total. I understand that Princess needs to charge double the fare for single travelers but they should perk those cruisers with a night of specialty dining or something!

I think you are doing a disservice to the Princess Plus Fare and Princess Premier Fare cost breakdowns by focusing solely on how many drinks you need to make it worthwhile….if you include the Ocean Now activation fee (which you need to pay with a standard fare but do not need to pay with the Plus and Premier) and the room service charge/charges as well as the two casual dining meals you are almost breaking even without having 3-5 alcoholic drinks. I would like to see a breakdown of costs that focuses on all of the included items as I think a lot of people are focusing too much on alcohol.

Thanks for explaining this in a simple manner. Still, neither of these packages will work for me for the simple reason that my wife doesn't drink. We bring our 11-year old son along too and he is underaged, so he cannot (legally) drink either. Princess' policy is that if a customer wants a Plus/Premier package, everyone in the cabin must purchase it too. So, ultimately, it leaves me with no package or I would need to, personally, consume quite a lot of beer (about a dozen) per day to even get close to breaking even.

@@ACruisingGoodTime No one has ever told me that our child didn't have to "Plus" until now. I just double checked on the Princess website and confirmed that only wife and I would need to do the upgrade. This has now brought the "Plus" package into play for our upcoming trip next spring. I might consider using our OBC for offsetting those cover charges for the casual/premium dining instead of on WiFi for our kid...he might not survive without internet.

Don’t need an engineer to figure it out. The better package is a deal if used to it’s extent. If you are only needing one internet hook up and a couple of drinks pay your grats then not buying it is cheaper. Wi fi though on the package is one devise each, so two hookups if you buy it without the package $15 is only for one person for one devise. If you are buying for two passengers it would be $30 for the wifi, am I correct? I know from carnival you pay for each person (but we just buy the one hookup and take turns from one device to the other.) We have the package for our next 2 princess cruises which will be our first time having any form of drink package. We have not bought pop or specialty dining on ship or special coffee on our previous cruises. I am looking forward to being able to order whatever I wish without thought as well as the juice bar and trying those special coffee selections. So we will see how it works out for us with having unlimited splurging.

I don’t drink alcohol and I’m not likely to ever have 10 sodas per day, even though I’d drink quite a few. Wish there were more mix and match options as what some people like, others don’t. Plus the 2 speciality dining just don’t seem right when it’s a per day cost but you could be on a short or a long cruise

Wifi on board is notoriously awful. Unless you are doing a cruise to remote islands or a cruise with a lot of sea days there's almost always free wifi on the dock, so even that isn't much of an incentive to buy a package. Even less if you're doing a cruise of your own country, or buy a sim that will work in the areas you are cruising to. Your own data will work while you're in port.

G'day, try looking at a drinks package on RCCL in Australia. I'm booked for a 10 day cruise next March from Sydney. The drink package is $122.24 AUD / per guest per day down from $163.00 AUD onboard. NOW, a beer is $8 + 18% = $9.44. So at $122.24 a day I would need to drink 13 beers to break even. I''m not sure if the management of RCCL understand the laws in Australia. We have a law called ""The Responsible Service of Alcohol " If RCCL service me 13 beers & I fall over hurting myself,,,,,,,,,,,, they are liable by law.

We are going on a 110 day world cruise in 2024 with a lot of sea days initially but the closer we get to Europe from Australia, the less sea days. I drink wine modestly and my wife not at all. By my calculations for the two of us, we will be up for an extra A$13,200! And that ain’t peanuts when we’ve paid for the cruise, travel insurance and land tours. I haven’t included money for incidentals yet. At 76, I’m not doing gym and certainly not eating the ‘speciality’ desserts.
