Is The Oxalic Acid InstaVap From Lorobees REALLY WORTH IT?! Beekeeping 101

Since Kasey and I are going back to treating our production hives for varroa mites we decided to invest in an oxalic acid vaporizer from ‪@LorobBees‬ . Oxalic acid is my favorite treatment s it is the least harsh on the bees. But, the trick is... you have to time it right because it will only kill phoretic mites, mites on the bees. So let's try this out and see what we think!!
Also.. I have started a new membership on the channel called the Hive Mind! I started this membership to give you a behind the scenes look at what it is truly like learning and growing with beekeeping as we expand our apiary. All proceeds go towards helping support our growth and buying more equipment. I am beyond thankful for how far we have come and it is all thanks to YOU for supporting my journey these last few years!

I have the cord version and love it. I use an inverter on my truck battery and it works great! According to research a higher amount of oxalic is now being used. I raised my amount. A couple of my nuc customers did washes after a month or so(by then full brood boxes with supers) and out of four nucs they only found two mites. I did five treatments over a month starting on January 1st

I got one of those, I have never even seen a mite since. I plan to treat 4 subs a year of 7 every 3 days. Around the Equinoxes and solstices. The best thing it is so easy and quick so that you are more likely to do it rather than not want to do it because it is a PITA. A couple of tips 1 if your OA is too dry to stick in the applicator add a little water to the OA, and I hold my vape downside when I put the applicator in and keep it upside down till am ready to engage the burner. Great buy worth the money

Oh that's pertty .. I bought a plunger from them to use in my gas vap .. problem with the gas vap loading it cap gets so hot. Hopefully that plunger fits or I'll make it fit .. sure fire way to get them mites at the right time.. Aug 1 St split them right down the center treat both sides with apivar.. side with all the forage bees I give them a deep of new foundation to draw and feed 4 gallons. I've never lost one I've treated that way.. they normally fill up on goldenrod get really healthy.. oh before I split them I feed them 6 lb of pollen sub 2 weeks before I split normally like 16 frames of brood .. key is rapid growth only way to clean them up before the winter bees start.. take these strong units making spring honey.. commercial operations don't make spring honey they use it to split everything build numbers. Must make spring honey more valuable.. we get these summer pollen deaths bees get on that sweet clover nectar like all they want.. why they take that huge pollen Patty right down. Commercial operations feed pollen sub heavy in September .. they must not be on the goldenrod like I am only thing I can figure.. we get heavy pollen flow in the fall. Summer only time I see a pollen dearth.. so much pollen in the fall they don't kick out the drones. Most of them are parked on basswood and.knapweed that's there honey crop .. upper Michigan has same plants as southern Michigan rich up there.. that's wide open plenty of area for secluded breeding yards .. there's tons of native bees up there it's rich.. northern lower all sandy soil great for basswood and knapweed

I may be wrong but I think I've read it or heard on several other vlogs that OA is one of the only treatments bees haven't shown resistance to yet.

We OAV in spring and fall then again going into winter. 2g per deep on a 5 round every 5 days schedule. That is 25 days worth which coincides with a 24 day drone brood life cycle. Its important because the OAV does not penetrate the cells. The 5x5 method 3 times a year seems to work well.

The company recommends using 6AH or bigger batteries. They may last a little longer before charging. You’re treating at the perfect time with all uncapped brood. Thanks for the video 👍

My suggestion would be to buy the ( Roof) it’s a yellow piece that slides over the dosing tube . The water that’s in the OA can drain out and can get the into the insulation and then short out the computer board . Ask my how I know .

@jima3206 Месяц назад
I understand that you need to block the OA in the hive for 10 minutes after the vaporizer is done. The bees circulate it around the hive.

Really should use goggles also as the vapor affects all mucus membranes.

I was attracted to your page because you had a lot of treatment-free options that you talked about. I'm not trying to condemn, just trying to understand. Why the switch to treatments? Also just an observation if it hurts your lungs to inhale it what does it do to the bees Yes I am a backyard beekeeper. I am not armchair quarterback ung just trying to understand. Maybe I missed a video explaining it, if not maybe it would be helpful for you to explain exactly why you decided to treat this year versus other years. Thanks for putting out the videos I have loved watching your progress and you explaining why you do what you do.

Comparing bees to humans is not a valid comparison. OA is damaging to our lungs and mucus membranes, it is not damaging to the bees, it is very damaging to the mites.

The breeding yard is treatment free, so they are still trying to breed treatment free bees.

@@Swarmsteadthe journey of a thousand steps begins with just one. They are treatment free in their breeding yard, just not their production yards. Without any money it is hard to contribute trying to improve their line. They just aren't putting all their eggs in one basket

After watching videos on the research of oxalic acid, they recommend 3 to 4 grams of OA. It showed one gram was not effective.

Sure, accept you have to open the hives and your adding moisture to colonies so during the cold months your unable to do it and if you do your risking your bees

Also, you are losing lots of vapor there. When we blast em, we dont see any OAV coming out of the hile we are putting the barrel in. One difference is we drill a 1/4" hole in the bottom board. Its a tight fit so the vapor doesnt blow back. We also only have 3 hives, so it is easier for us to do. Good luck!
@LorobBees
@LorobBees 2 месяца назад
Technically our recommendation is to treat through the front of the hive as it mitigates potential clogging and such from burr comb or anything else the bees have going on. The enterance can be blocked off further by laying a shop towel beside the vaporizer to stop the breeze from blowing the vapor out.
@ericward6919
@ericward6919 2 месяца назад
@@LorobBees I guess the version I have doesn't really allow for the use of the front entrance like the newer units do. Still, zero vapor leak with the drilled hole and I don't have to use a shop towel barricade around a hot ass pipe.
@reneallen6405
@reneallen6405 2 месяца назад
Drill a 1/4 inch hole in the back of your hive. (Near the bottom) then insert the vaporizer into the hole
@phillee2814
@phillee2814 2 месяца назад
As close to the bottom board as you can get it, to avoid melting any comb with the hot OA vapour. Then put a 1/4" screw in the hole in between treatments, to avoid the bees propilising it up. The screws with the little sticking out "wings" are easiest to use by hand with gloves on. The complementing nut is known as a wingnut, but I've never heard of the same type of bolt being referred to as a wingbolt for some reason, although I've never heard of them being referred to as anything other than hand or finger bolts, although that is not very specific, as there are lots of bolts you can use with your hand or fingers.

Maybe I missed it. Are you treating these colonies in series? Or are they broodless? If you are treating with OAV with capped brood, and NOT doing it every 3-4 days on those colonies, you are wasting your time. You will be ineffective and disappointed when you come back to find that the mites were not impacted like you hoped.
@beefitbeekeeping

All of these hives were broodless, we pulled queens and just got queens back from mating flights.

Just saying first off I said this same story in a past video and explained that trying one year made me hate it and never try again, and the hives i treated where just random splits i had made and it started my treatment free journey and from that point on i never treated, either go back and watch all videos or keep up with them but your only come here to troll so it is what it is..
