Despite this reputation, passionate advocates ardently defend the breed, vehemently opposing government efforts to ban the Pitbull. I have an 'accidental' pit bull grand-dog. Long story short, we agreed to take her for a weekend, that was 5 years ago, and she's still here! My 3 men (husband, son, and little old-man dog we had at the time) decided she was a keeper. I've had dogs all my life, setters and collies, NICE dogs, and this pit girl is hands-down the BEST of them all. We love her SO much.

I do Doordash part time. I had massive bully pit rush up to me today. The thing just wanted my love and his owner was watching. I loved on him for a minute. He was the absolute sweetest thing. He even jumped in my driver seat when I opened it to leave. He just wanted to go on an adventure, but I redirected him to his dad. I have two huskies, so I get physical dogs. The moment you freeze on them, they can get testy. This one meant no harm. He licked my hand like crazy. I will remember him for awhile. I love dogs in general.

I went jogging once and a large pitty broke loose from its handler. Fortunately it was like every other pity I’d met and just jazzed about the chance to play. Knocked me down because she was so big but I barely got a skinned knee. It was a couple years before I worked for a dog trainer and even then I could tell her body language was all play, no fuss.

I’ve owned 2 pitbulls in my life… They were A lot of work but both times it paid off and I never had an issue with Tyson or Nala… I didnt know what I was doing when I got Tyson but I gave him all my attention and trained him as best as possible and he was one of the best dogs I even had… When I got Nala I knew what I was doing after having Tyson and Nala was even better both Nala and Tyson knew to bite if I was in danger but never did because when I said something they always listened… In my opinion if you cannot give a pitbull the exercise they need and the attention, Training they need DO NOT GET ONE! Do the dog a favour and do not get one… I didn’t have experience but I really did my research and gave both Tyson and Nala my full attention at all times even when they were trained, If you cannot do that do the dog a favour and don’t get one….

I adopted a rescue, what I think, American bully. He was out in a blizzard wandering the town. Followed me home. I found owners and they GAVE him to me. He was underfed and starved for a pack. He assimilated with our collie mix, our young children, and then a brand new baby. He never leaves my side u less it’s to sleep. He has some dog aggression but only on a leash or behind fence. And only when I do not introduce the new dog to the pack. I am the alpha. If I bring a dog in he sees it as that dog is under his protection. Honestly one of if not the best dog I have ever owned. They have amazing ability and need to be socialized and trained in a pack structure. And they love it. Make them sit and wait for food. They love it. They love you for it. An experienced owner is key.

I have had and trained dogs all my life. My Wife and I have fostered and sheltered many dog breeds for many years. We got our Red Nose Pitty at 8 weeks old from a local rescue that advocates for this breed. THE BEST DOG I have ever had. Trained our girl at 6 months to catch a frisbee. She does this fun activity every night in spectacular fashion! She loves to "show off" and is so "present". Sweet and loving. Amazing around our grandchildren. Yes high energy and they are BORN ATHLETES. You have to take this into consideration before you decide to own a Pit Bull. YOU have to exercise them everyday. I am a very active person, so I personally love this trait. We are headed out right now for our 2 mile hike then, Frisbee time! Best dogs ever.

But the main point here is that you are adding mastiff and bulldog, which are 2 people aggressive breeds, with natural guarding instincts, and A LOT of size... That right there makes a total different dog. APBTs are not people aggressive, and are no bigger than 55lbs... They're Terriers, and an American bully is so far from that. You need to learn about dog bloodlines and breeding, and you'll learn how much an outcross affects a breed, not to mention a cross with a completely different dog breed... The two things that have kept him from becoming a disaster are that I am housebound and I take an absurd amount of personal pride in the things I do. I simply will not allow this dog to be a bad dog. Great stuff. Pitbulls need owners who know what time it is for sure. Their tenacity can be off the charts. My current pit has graduated to "advanced" training classes--we're offleash and on long lines with other dogs, pretty fun. I've noticed everything mentioned in the video, but also, the shepherd dogs seem to stay on task a little better than my pit or any pit I've had. American Pitbulls are great dogs, but they are not for everyone. Actually, as a fan of American Pitbulls myself, I can say that they probably are the breed most people cannot handle. Their unrivaled combination of amazing strength, toughness, athleticism, tenacity, energy, prey drive, and obviously gameness is something the vast majority of people are not used to in a dog. The history explains their impressive physical and mental traits. Theories and histories vary, but based on two of the leading authors and historians of the breed (Richard F. Stratton and Diane Jessup), they were bred for what is known as catch work for wild boar and bulls and later used for sports like bull baiting and bear baiting before being turned to dog-vs.-dog combat when laws against these types of sports were passed. Even today, there are people that take part in dog-vs.-dog sports in America and others and bear baiting in places like Pakistan. One of the dogs of choice are Pitbulls.

He was able to catch it in time. 2) Another neighbors pit / Shar Pei furiously guarded my porch and wouldn't let me pass. 3) Different neighbor thought it was funny to have his pit bark at and threaten people, no leash/ no fence. I had to mow grass with a pistol on my hip. 4) My neice was jogging her leashed Australian Cattle Dog through a very nice neighborhood when a pit charged out of a house and attacked her dog. The girl and dog both went to the ER- lots of stitches. I don't hate them or fear them. Another neighbor has a pair, one pit and one pit/ Dogo mix. They are awesome, beautiful sweethearts. I do think the bad outweighs the good.

Main problem of power breeds(not just pit, i love power breeds and people around them is still same) they attract bad or absolutely dumb people. Beacuse "Oooooh, i will be that scary man with big scary doooog!" They dont want to train their dog, socialization is a no no and when someone come into their home and this dog bite him or a child, they end in kennels or in my hands. And if they are dumb enough, they try to "fix" them with punching. And trust me, it happens a LOT. My newest staffy who came to me from owner like that was covered in bruises and have fear aggresion. And why? Because they dont need trainer, "this type of dog will surrend if you will be more than him". Also, im from europe and in my state is no laws around aggresive animals. In us, you can take dog from owner, not here. If your pit bit someone, you will pay small fine, around 100usd. Medical care is payed by state. And if you punching your dog and keep him without food to death, 100usd is usually the maximum. 100usd is around most people here daily pay.

I believe you but it’s so shockingly different than my experiences. They’re such sweethearts to humans. I have to assume that many owners get them specifically because they want them to be scary and threatening, thus reinforcing such behavior. Man I’ve adopted THREE of them from shelters at various times (one was just a puppy at the time though), and even the one from the shelter “in the hood” where we didn’t know where she came from, she was a total sweetheart too. I know a pitbull that chomped on my friends Yorkie’s neck and shook it til it died, but that Pit was being walked by it’s owner and my friends fam accidentally left their front door open, so their yorkie bolted out at the pit. It “attacked” the pit. So, idk. (Though my current 90lbs pit would neverrrr do that he’s hella socialized and just wants to play) I should also add, my big pit is more gentle with my baby n toddler and youth nieces and nephews than even their family dogs.

@@MisterK-YT My staffy would propably kill that york too. She is absolute sweetheart, love to play with every other dog, but if she is on leash, she guard. Never attack first, but if something that small try to attack her or me, she will propably kill it on spot. Yup, she have muzzle, but about two months ago some elder lady let her bishon to run from other side of busy road to us, bishon jump and bite her muzzle. There was half second for her to make that bishon part of sidewalk. And again, it was my fault, because i have dangerous breed. And yup, she has muzzle only because people are stupid and they send ther dog even in bus to "meet yours". This things happen every week, sometimes more. The problem is always people. If that lady does not have bishon but pit(or just any other breed larger than bishon), he will propably kill some dog very soon. Some people just should not have any dog.

To give you guys an idea of how energetic these dogs are... on Saturdays we use the flirt pole for 10-15 minutes THEN we go out on 5-7 mile moutain hikes. He takes a nap on the way home, then does zoomies when we get in the house. Thank god he settles well in his crate. After work is usually a 2 mile walk and 30 minutes of training or physical play. Absolutely great video! I had an English Staffie mix for 14 years. Best dog ever! She had a high prey drive but was great with other dogs and pets. Even our pet house chicken. When she passed we ended up adopting a 9 month old American Staffie. He was scared of everything but also has done great with our house chicken and pet rabbit. But he is highly reactive to other dogs. He’s 3 now and the e-collar has been great at helping when we do run into other dogs on walks. High levels of obedience has been ground breaking. But I do have to agree the PitBull has to be one of the best dogs out there when bred and trained properly.

My boy is so well behaved. He could do a lot of damage but never has unless it was a designated destruction item such as a toy. Has never showed any human aggression, humping, or marking and he was fully intact until he was about 11. Fixed him due to prostatitis. He only became aggressive with other dogs after being attacked by off- leash dogs around 2-3 years old. He's always had a high prey drive though and is 100% food motivated for training. I'll definitely take a break from owning a dog after he passes but he's 14, going into his 2nd year as a cancer survivor, and is still the best boy, wants to play, lots of energy, still climbs stairs. He was sickly as a puppy (got parvo even after the shot) but he's tough as a tank with the sweetest personality. Please don't get one if you're not physically strong enough to restrain one and find the right leash/ collar combo for being out in public.

It was bloat I think but the er vet said really wasn’t anything they could do for him. He still acted like a pup and times and still looked so good for his age. I don’t want another dog I don’t think, being someone that doesn’t have a family to come to it just hits diff. I new I was attached to him but didn’t realize it would hurt so damn bad. I don’t ever wanna go through losing another one. He was my ride or die no matter the situation. People raise their kids up knowing they will leave and move out hell most are ready for them to.ha But you raise a dog up from a pup and if done correctly that dog will never leave you no matter what happens. It is death that has to separate them from you. Enjoy the time you have left and be patient on days he’s not his self. Hope he goes peacefully with you there for comfort.

I am glad I've been vigilant with his health and blessed enough to be able to afford treatment (almost 15k in surgery and chemo) or he would have been gone long ago. There is some peace in knowing he's had a good long life but still hard seeing the slow decline and knowing his day will come. I hope that one day you are able to find peace and give another good doggy a chance to be loved 💜

We adopted a 5 year old Pit mix. 100lbs. He came for a sleepover and never left. I've had many many dogs, (a few of them very strong willed) This was one of the best dogs I've ever own. And so beautiful People stopped me every day. His previous owners were abusive to him, and best we can figure they released him onto the streets so we had a few problems. You couldn't train him with food he had such a high food drive he couldn't focus if he knew you had food anywhere on you, you were invisible. He ate in 2.5 seconds, we bought him.a slow feeder and it slowed him down to 45 seconds. He also ate anything he came across, including a padded amazon envelope we had a war over and I lost. Convinced it was from the street life. He had some leash reactivity but we were able to control that very quickly. All he wanted to do was please you. 1 major issue was, he wouldn't pick the fight (not an alpha) but if a dog came at him it was game on and he was in for the fight. Too many people off leashing their dog with no control over the animal, it is unsafe. 100 lbs of pure muscle fully turned on is definitely a challenge. Wish I had him from when he was a puppy he would have been a phenomenal dog his entire life. I always put him up when the kids were around only because of his size and I didn't know his history with small children. The most loving dog, also thought he was a lap dog ; ). If you were on the couch he was curled up on you or next to you. Lost him to heart disease a few weeks ago 10yrs old. I would absolutely have another one, however, I agree not everyone should have one. They need your love, attention and guidance or they can become a dangerous weapon. His jaw strength was nothing I ever experienced in another animal, if he didn't want to release it you were not getting it.

I can relate to having a pitbull with incredibly high food drive. When my dog was 2 years and 6 months old, even experienced trainers were amazed at his level of enthusiasm for treats. It took some time and patience, but through consistent training over a few months, we were able to channel that energy in a positive way. One tip that really helped was introducing a brief pause before giving him the treat, teaching him impulse control. Keeping training sessions short, under 5 minutes, and using low-value treats like carrots also proved beneficial. Remember, progress may be slow and frustraiting for both of you, but it's definitely worth it in the end. Stay patient and consistent, and you'll see results.

I love dogs. In fact, I love all animals. I am beginning to fear the Pit Bull. Too many people have them now. I have a small dog now, but I once had a Pitt mix. Who was the best dog ever unless you were another dog. Back then, there were no leash laws in our neighborhood. One night, I saw him kill another dog. I tried to stop him, but he was too far gone. I could do nothing to stop it, I was a kid. Yet Sam was so very sweet otherwise. I fear for my little dog when walking because, for some reason, Pitt owners don't want to leash them while out walking! I keep pepper spray and a big stick just in case someone's prey drive kicks into overdrive.

We took in our pitbull from a neighbor about a year and a half ago and despite the fact that it was a really terrible situation, he's an absolute joy. I watched a large number of your videos before I convinced my husband we should rescue him, and I've continued watching your videos as we've worked with him. He's a completely different dog from when we took him in, but we've paid a lot of attention to him and I in particular have been extremely cognizant of potential triggers. For example, he absolutely hated hoodies when we first brought him home. They just set him off. Now he's much, much better, but he still doesn't like when he can't see someone's face. He could not stand men at first, but now that he's been around my husband for a year, he's fine with them - still doesn't really like them around me (he's my velcro dog), but is aware that I can handle myself and he can just chill. He also does not like any kind of gun-shaped object. I mean literally, you can't have a Nerf gun or a squirt gun in the same room with him, he goes absolutely nuts. He is terrified of them. But he's smart and funny and currently on the verge of throwing a tantrum because it's bedtime and I'm still sitting at my computer. That said, if we hadn't taken him when we did, there probably would have been no hope for him. He would have been way too traumatized and unsocialized, and there are still undesirable behaviors we need to work on (specifically overreacting to people at the door and other dogs when we're on walks). If he'd gone to someone who just figured they'd leave him out in the back yard and only occasionally check on him, he'd definitely be a statistic by now. This is not a breed for someone who's uncomfortable with being a leader. Now I really do have to go because he's a gigantic toddler who's about to throw a tantrum over being up past his bedtime.

My husband and I adopted a 1.5 y/o American Pitbull mix from a local shelter two months ago and have utilized this man's training videos for nearly every facet of training! The progress Miles has made in a couple of months is incredible! I know some may question his methods, but I HIGHLY recommend taking his advice, especially when it comes to breeds that may be a bit more "complicated." From my experience, Miles loves and thrives on routine, mental and physical exercise (at least 60 minutes a day, typically more), socialization (people and dogs), and consistency between my husband and me when it comes to commands and rules. In exchange for our commitment to giving him the life he deserves, Miles is the most affectionate dog either of us has ever had the pleasure of interacting with. I am a lifelong lover of all bully and pittie variations, but please make sure that if you're considering adopting one, that you are prepared to be a responsible owner so that you can avoid being a perpetuator of the stereotypes.

I rescued a baby pitbull that lived under a trailer. He was so a good puppy, was highly trained and socialized. He loved people but when he got to about 1 years old something happened and he became severely aggressive towards dogs. Started turning on our dog, cats and us. The moment he got fixated on a dog, there was no breaking his eye contact. Extremely high pain tolerance. He was so dangerous as the weeks went on, we brought his to broad and training , multiple vets and dog behavioralists. They all told his he was mentally off because if genetics and they believe he came from a generation of fighting. We no longer have him and the state I lived in at the time band pitbulls so he was forced to be euthanized. It was horrible. I’ve fostered and rescued pitbulls specifically that breed my whole life. Absolutely love these dogs. These dogs aren’t for everyone and you have to be very careful where you get you pitbull and meet the parents as well. I currently own a cane corso and she incredible. As much as I love pitties, and have a TON of experience with them, just be careful. I told myself if I couldn’t even own one, then most people can’t own one.

Thats why it’s highly recommended that you learn about the breed to know the possible triggers. My pit was pulled of the BA list at a shelter, adopted out and bit someone, returned to the rescue that pulled him, sent to a “trainer” for boarding and bit EVERYONE on staff, then the “trainer” labeled it as neurological and recommended BA…again. He’s been with me for 3 years…I use him for dog/dog intros and he meets new humans daily…no bites. One of the best friends I’ve ever had.

He loved it we exposed him to everything including my family himalayan cat. He was a puppy and our cat popped him on the nose. He never looked at a cat or chased them off the top off of boyfriends back wall. He walked beautifully. My boyfriends grandfather walked him. He had boys-men challenge him to fight there dogs. His grandfather refused and tell them leave them alone. The mailman, gas man and milkman deliver or check meters. They all loved him and would bring biscuits. I think many of those were the bullies or mixes that do have that human aggression. But then my new dog made a friend who turned out to be half pit bull half blue heeler. That little dog is probably one of the worst breed combos I have seen. But she is very intelligent, but that prey drive has her chasing bikers, cars, etc. And she has left bite marks on these people's legs. She has had warnings. She has next to zero training. I have been trying to help the owner, but I only see her maybe once a week. Her owners don't excersie or train her. I just spent 8 minutes teaching her fetch, and she got it so fast. A wonderful dog, but man does her energy never stop.

Thank you so much for the video. I do get confused by the differences between the bully type breeds. We have a pit mix puppy we inherited because she was dumped in our neighborhood. When people ask I tell them she's an all American mutt. Most of the video definitely describes her. Doesn't really need brushing, she comes in muddy and when I look again it's gone. Loyal. She plays very well with lab mix, they play hard which wears them both out. Admittedly, she sometimes gets jealous of the lab and tries to keep him from me but we're working on that and have made progress. Destructive, totally! She's working on our couch but it's worn out and was free... And you can't take it with you anyways. She's deaf so that's an interesting curve ball in training, definitely 0 recall unless she's looking at you. 😂

Considering the number of "pitbull" type dogs in the US, the vast majority of them are friendly and loving. The problem is, even a small percentage of dogs that attack people is difficult to get past because of how absolutely powerful and tenacious these dogs are. It isn't so much that they are pit bulls as it is the fact they are GIANT TERRIERS. If you have ever seen a rat terrier clearing rats, you will understand just how dangerous a dog that is 10X that size can be. As someone who has worked with large, strong breeds for decades, my first encounter with an APBT absolutely stunned me with the sheer explosive power these dogs can exhibit.

I have to disagree. Most people view the pitbull as a guard dog and will breed aggressive, scared pitbulls in theit backyards to sell to other bad owners who will encourage the same thing. I'm sure you are correct in a good breeder would have a great dog. But I feel you are overly deemphasizing just how bad the backyard breeder issue is. At least in the USA. Take a trip to any major run down city like Chicago and you'll see pits flipping out tied out back behind every chain-linked fence. I don't blame cities for banning pitbulls over what had become an epidemic of bad breeding. I'd even go as far as to say a license should be required to own the dog to try and stop this. People who are "scared" of the average pit have every right to be because the typical pit will be below average w/ fear aggression with a below average owner to boot.

GREAT VIDEO!! Very informative and honest in terms of pros vs cons. And of course there are gonna be a ton of people in the comments telling you how wrong you are that aren't professional trainers, but I think it's very telling that not only is a professional dog trainer speaking as to how great the APBT CAN be if you put the work in an an owner, but also I think the fact that you're a former cop who no doubt dealt with at least a few "loose pitbull" calls in your career has a positive opinion of the breed.

Thank you, thank you for this excellent video. Couldn't agree more. I've followed the breed for most of my life. I feel that when people started getting the idea that prey drive, dog aggression and "gameness" translated to then being protection dogs is when a lot of the problems started for the breed. Dog aggression and a desire to protect their humans is not the same thing. Thank you for giving an honest breakdown of the breed, people really need to understand what dog they get or have in front of them!

I admire the pitbull breed but wouldn't consider rescuing or getting myself one. Dog training is no joke. Anyone who thinks that by watching videos and doing the training once, the dog won't act up later is joking. An average/regular person with a 9 - 5 job needs more time to properly train a pitbull. Seeking a professional and expert dog trainer like Garrett is very important and highly suggested.

Nice insights on the breed. But I disagree on the stamina, part. I have APBT for years, and they have really long stamina. Especially the ones that have been trained for hog catching and dog fighting. For dog fighting, they can fight for over an hour. In fact, their advantage over other medium and large breeds in the pit is their ability not only to sustain damage but to inflict one over a long period. There's even one documented fight in which two APBTs fought for about 4 hours. I am against dog fighting, please don't get me wrong. But I did spend years of researching before I even considered having the breed as our family pet. And those are the info that I was able to coalesce in researching the APBTs or as the dogmen would say "bulldogs".

the only reason pit bulls get a bad rap is this. small dogs account for more stitches in the usa then any other dog. we are talking dogs less then 15Lbs. the difference is when a small dog bites, you get stitches, when a bit bull bites, they dont stop until youre dead, make of this what you will but these are the facts

Exactly what the other person said. Technically speaking, all Amstaffs can be considered pit bulls, but it doesn’t work the other way around (this is something the AKC directly states in the history of the Amstaff). problem is their is a HUGE population of bad owners that are leading to human and dog deaths. They are also the dogs who harrass me the most on walks, luckily i have gsd who dont play games. @@yokaidealer read stories about a dog attack where someone is viciously mauled to death and you’ll get dozens of pit bulls causing them and you’ll get dozens of owners being super surprised when their previous angel who has never hurt anyone before mauls someone to death, and then you’ll get pit bull owners in denial trying to convince you that their anecdotal evidence about their precious dog loving belly rubs is more important to consider than the wave of stories of families being torn apart by this breed. It’s not even unusual to hear about stories where the precious pit attacks their OWN owner, sometimes without warning, sometimes because the owner got up too quickly for them. This is a breed problem, not an owner problem. This breed was built and raised throughout the centuries for a specific purpose, moulded to be a fighting dog. You can’t compare pit bulls to other dogs as if there is no difference between a bite from a chihuahua and a bite from a pitbull because that’s how you all sound when you do the whole “other breeds bite too” tap dance.
