In this episode of ‪@nextleveloz‬ we continue our journey across the Top End, taking in Bitter Springs and Mataranka Springs, checking out the quirky Daly Waters Pub and then heading across the Savannah Way to Borroloola and Hell's Gate.
We ask ourselves a number of questions this episode - which is better, Bitter Springs or Mataranka Thermal pools? What's with the dusty old bras hanging from the ceiling at Daly Waters Pub? And is the road to Hell's Gate as bad as the Gibb River Road?
Don't forget you need an NT Parks pass to access some of these locations.
Welcome to Episode 35 of our Big Lap Gap Year. We're David and Paula @nextleveloz Like many of you, we've worked hard for 40 years, but we are too young to retire. So we're taking a gap year from work, we've bought our first ever caravan and are doing a Big Lap around Australia taking in the iconic destinations of our fabulous country.

Excellent episode. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for watching. Probably the toughest section of road we’ve done this year. It varies of course by season and traffic but when we did it it was pretty poor.

I agree with you about Daly Waters. My wife and I described it as tacky. Fun for some.

Thanks for watching and giving your view. Eclectic, weird, untidy, quirky. Each to their own - no issue but we’ve been to some ripper outback pubs and stations etc so this wasn’t our cup of tea to be sure. Others seemed to enjoy it. All part of life’s colour and in these days of faster, longer, better roads and cars businesses need to identify a market and give people a reason to look in, so we get that bit.

Great episode, we did the trip last year, east to west. Brought back lots of memories 😊

Thanks for watching and glad it brought back memories. Some great locations along the Savannah Way. Although my sense having done it, is to avoid the Hell’s Gate to Borroloola section unless you are heading into the East Arnhem Land / Limmen National Park section. Lots West of Borroola and lots East of Hell’s Gate apart from experiencing the road there isn’t that much in between.

Great video. Brings back so many good memories, it’s been ages since I was there.

Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for watching. It’s an amazing part of the country. I’m not sure we’d go that route to Hells Gate again. We need to get to Lawn Hill but it’s closed this year due to flood damage. And TBH Daly Waters Pub is quirky but a bit weird. We only need to see that once 🤣.

Hi. We’ve been very happy with it. Doesn’t need any repeaters in our case. The alarm has gone off twice in our time with it and both times because i hadn’t reset the parameters when aired down and up. So we know it works and gets out attention quickly 😂. It was also relatively inexpensive and very easy to fit and use.

Do you have a heater in your van seems silly to ask even in the tropics but it does get cold

Hi thanks for watching and yes we do. We have a Truma gas water and space heater. it actually works very well. TBH we just didn’t want or need to put it on in the tropics even if it was cold enough for Paula to sleep in longer 😂😉 and I needed to find my polar fleece !!

Need to fix your audio bro, great video

Hi - Thanks for watching and the feedback. No issue, but what part of the audio troubled you? We tested on three devices and it came out ok, a tiny bit fuzzy on one bit overall ok. We used DJI mics on several parts in this.l and if anything it seemed to reduce the significant background noise of the corrugated road. One part Paula forgot to switch her mic on and we made a bit of a joke, but let me know which bit and what device you were watching on so we can keep tweeking it and continue to work the mixing as best we can cheers

Does your van have air suspension? Does air suspension help absorb the rough parts better to not cause screws to come loose. I ask because I have sir suspension on my van but not had it tested to the level you are currently doing.

Hi Peter and hope you enjoyed our Sunday morning coffee content!! 🤣. Yes we have Cruisemaster XT suspension with airbags and yes it helps on several levels. But even with the airbags roads like the road to hells gate punish the van and we air down to soften the ride further. And even then we rattled a few screws loose. The XT with airbags has been excellent and if we built another van we’d consider the further upgrade to ATX for that extra bit of toughness - but it’s a marginal call. Airbags help level on uneven sites, give us some extra clearance options for off road and water crossings and at normal travel height : pressure with airs down tyres provide that extra softens on rough roads.

@@nextleveloz I have trakmaster nullabor van, older model that does not currently have side to side leveling but I am looking at fitting upgrade retrofit option. It doesn't have the clearance you have either, good van though... I did all the weights and compliance recently and seems the Discovery 3 has a really good towing report.

@@peterbullen3347 Having a good reliable rig already in place with some upgrade options is a great start. We started from scratch which wasn’t cheap.

Another great update, just out of interest that terrain looks like ideal snake territory, have you seen or do you have to be aware of the dangers when walking in these areas? We don't have these problems, or the huge spiders here in the UK!
@nextleveloz
@nextleveloz 10 месяцев назад
Yep. It is snake territory. You always keep it in the back of your mind especially through the long grass or the rocky outcrops. Most snakes will try to avoid you unless you step on them or try to do something silly like grab them. So being sensible. We wear hiking shoes/ boots rather than thongs/flip flops which are reserved for the immediate camp area / showers etc. I carry two first aid kits in my day pack - one of which is a snake bite kit, and a Garmin sat PLB device. But beyond reasonable precautions and preparations you get on with it and leave them alone and mostly they will leave you alone. I’ve only had one close call on this trip and that was in Tassie early in our Lap when a Tiger Snake and I surprised each other in the track to South East Cape. Tigers can be a bit skittish but i this case he went the opposite direction!! That spider over Bitter Springs was tiny BTW 😂😉. cheers
