Guy, this "review" is all based down to your camera you used for the viewers. Look at an actual review of the XSX and youll find out it cant do true deep blacks and still has lower quality vs competitors
You are right to point out that there is something a bit strange with the XBox Series X and it's Black Levels - it does that in other modes too - like when using VRR. But I think it's not so bad that a bit of fiddling with your TV setting won't mostly compensate for it. For someone like me who isn't going out and buying racks and racks of discs it's perfectly adequate I feel.
Really depends on your collection imo. If you have a few hundred 4k discs then the relative value of the dedicated player is a lot better than if you only have a few dozen.
@@roflryan7464 are there even that many 4K blu-rays available? I know it’s improved considerably in recent years, but several hundred still seems like a stretch.
I think the Xbox does an amazing job competing against one of the best 4k dedicated players around. With updates the Xbox could get even better. I’m perfectly happy with the capabilities of the Xbox, impressive. I’d like to see how well it does upscaling 1080p blu ray discs.
I recently tested out my Ice Age 3 Blu-ray Disc on the series x on a 4K display. (I got the Blu-ray back in like 2013 so I believe it’s 1080p) Needless to say the movie looked really good on the 4K tv. It honestly looked like it could be 4K itself
@@Green_Stache_Productions the Xbox always had a good upscaling technique, the HD DVD add-on for the 360 even improved the image on regular DVD movies.
But he's way to late bringing this out xbox have been using a 4k player since the one x and one s ..and its made by Samsung plus its a fantastic player to be fair
If you're ok with less than ideal blu-ray playback then the console is fine. If you want the best possible image you can get then you want a dedicated blu-ray player. Someone who is watching on a Vizio, TCL, or Hisense isn't going to notice a difference. Someone who is watching on a high end OLED very well could. There are other things a dedicated blu-ray player can do that a console can't as well, like play SACD, DVD-A, video and audio files from USB, etc. It all comes down to what you expect to get from the player and what it's worth to you. Same reason Microsoft is selling an XSS as well as an XSX, not everyone needs/wants the top of the line and that's perfectly fine.
@@TheGreatMunky blu Ray is 30 fps and 4k is 60 to 120 fps ...the xbox one x 4k blu ray player is made by Samsung its absolutely brilliant and I see no difference on the xbox 4k played or my LG 4k player...if anything the xbox is better than my 4k player ..it gives me better and smoother picture ..so your talking shite
@@darrenhayes7786 I can't speak for LG players as I've never had one, but I have had a few Sony players and have had great luck with them. The drive in the Xbox may be made by Samsung but the playback depends entirely on the Xbox blu-ray app. I'm not sure if they've changed it or not but on the original Xbox One console I own the audio output was inferior to a standalone player. Not sure what 30, 60, and 120fps has to do with anything. What tv are you watching on? Just watching this video I could see a difference between the two players. On an OLED there's a big difference between near-black and black. If the Xbox player raises the black level then that would ruin the true-black of an OLED. Like I said though, if the Xbox player is good enough for you then that's fine. I'm not trying to say I'm better than you because I want a standalone player. I wish I wasn't as picky in regards to picture and audio quality, it would save me a ton of money.
@@TheGreatMunky im using LG 65 inch qled dolby vision with nanocell tech ..it plays my console at 120hz in full 4k thats full 60fps on the XBX and I cab tell you that the xbox plays 4k dvds better than the original as the original xbox one had a blue Ray player the xbox one X has a 4k uhd blu Ray player lol its not ps4 pro with standard blu Ray lol
This time in life, you need eyes of an eagle to see differents between all those things. The most Its al about tv settings. And it doesn’t make the movie any better with this tiny tiny tiny black black shadow with shadow differents???
@@keithkool8308 The contrast difference the from blackness level makes every thing pop more on the Panasonic player not just shadow details but the whole picture. But you are right there will be many other factors playing into bigger difference from settings and tvs. But for people who buy top tvs and calibrate them and use blurays for watching movies that difference is enough for not using the series X as a primary source of watching. Or at least that's how I feel about it 🦅☺️
You could get the same image output as the standalone player on Xbox by simple creating a custom tv profile and calibrating. Good comparisons though. Always refreshing to see someone creating comparisons like this. Kudos sir.
FYI when you toggle the two images you changed the background color light. In doing so you affected the way our eyes see the image and how our brains interpret the image and its color. Great vid. not complaining
@@tHAvIlLaMaN I found myself trying to block the background color with my hands so I could focus more on the differences in the picture image. For me personally my eyes had a hard time noticing the image differences everytime the background color changed. Great video though and keep up the great work!
@@tHAvIlLaMaN The colors and light in out environments change the way we see other colors in our environment. Different types of light let off different colors of light. Thus changing how we perceive our world. It is why different type of exposure in film is used. There is way to much to cover in a comment on a video. Look up Color Temperature in lighting, for starter. Take it from there. Think about how your eyes a ust walking from outside in doors. It takes a few seconds for your eyes to see the world correctly. But it is really just your brain reimaging what we see.
I had the exact same thought but figured I'd be alone in this... Good to see I'm not crazy! I suspected mr villaman was making them different colors as a way to label them which is cool but the way the colors surrounding an image affect its perception is profound. This is why I'm not a fan of entertainment center bias lighting in general; it's neat in theory but its effect can be oddly too influential over the perceived temperature of the image. Great video nonetheless!
Theoretically the 2 devices should reproduce the identical images if the decoding and rendering is correctly implemented without post processing, Chroma upscaling and such.
I initially upgraded to 4K bluray with the XBOX One X at launch in 2017 (I'd had a 4K LG LED TV and PS4 Pro for a year prior). My initial thought was it will be great, 2 for 1 but found the One X player to have a washed out image with poor HDR regardless of how I adjusted the settings (gaming was fine though). As a result I bought an LG UBK80 player as I'd changed TVs to a Samsung QLED (didn't originally go for an OLED because I was worried about burn in) and because Samsung don't support Dolby Vision didn't need the UBK90. I recently upgraded my whole bedroom AV set up due to the new consoles to a 55" LG OLED CX6LA TV (supports 4K / 120Hz with HDMI 2.1 and VRR), Sony UBP-X800M2 4K BR player, PS5 and XBOX Series X. Tried the XSX BR player app and still found it to be washed out plus the app currently doesn't support Dolby Vision for movie playback although the console does supports it for gaming. I suppose a firmware update will fix it eventually but I really like Dolby Vision.
I appreciate your videos: good detailed info that looks to have research behind it. So that you know: there’s already a fix for the black level issue. It’s currently in the Insider program (Xbox beta firmware test program). I have 2 Xboxes and one is signed up to the insider program. I suspect it will rolled out to the masses in a few weeks. Keep up the good work.
I've got the Xbox Series X, but there was something not quite right with the 4K DVD movies, so I bought the Panasonic PD-U820 and watched Maleficent 1 and 2. The section going over the forest at the beginning the movie on the Panasonic was nice a smooth where on the XSX had a stuttering effect and with Dolby Vision on 2 Dolby vision definitely helped bring some pop into the movie, like that colourful walk in the city in Alita ( great movie 🙂)
Why do the 2 devices decode and render the digital movie differently? With the correct hardware and software implementation, they should output the identical image. Does the uhd player post-process the image?
First time to watch a video from your channel. I must say that I like how you produce your videos. I guess I’m a finicky control freak because your description of the UB820 is exactly what I’m looking for. I have been an Xbox owner of all generations of microsoft consoles with the series x being the exception (not enough content yet to warrant a purchase). I have not been entirely impressed thus far with the software blu ray player of the Xbox One X. It’s ok. I am very curious as to the performance of the PS5 in terms of the blu ray performance. I would guess that the lack of controls that the series x has with the software blu ray player (in contrast to the UB820) will be equivalent to the PS5 as well. I look forward to your next video. Thanks!
This is like an eye exam. "One or two?....ummm" 😂 I cant tell a difference. Great review. Ver professional. I subscribed to support your channel. Best wishes. Stay blessed 🙏
Did the xbox one S also receive the improvements. Or does the one x get exclusive chip or sw upgrades that make it superior to the one one s when it comes to 4k playback?
One thing I find almost as important as the quality of the videos is the capabilities of resolution upscale. For example, watching full HD movies on an Xbox One on a 4K display is unacceptably bad because the movie is like 1/4 of the display size and there's 3/4's black "bazels" and you cannot adjust it through the tv because then all other elements on the Xbox is F'ed up. So... Do the Xbox Series X got a better video playing capability than the Xbox One?
Xbox One X and S had the same raised black issue when they launched and it was later fixed via firmware update. It is odd, then, that Microsoft overlooked the issue for the Series X release.
Are you able to get Dolby Atmos out of the SeriesX? Because I only Dolby true HD even though when I play video games i get Dolby Atmos. I only have this issue with the blue ray player. I have an LG C9.
Interesting, seems like it's a lot closer than expected. Would you say something like a CX could handle the tone mapping job well enough using a series X
Just my recent update and experience. So I've always played UHD disks on an X One, and now an X Series. I just got the UB820 a couple days ago, and these comparison videos don't do it justice. Having played both Dolby Vision and regular HDR10 movies on the UB820, there's a big difference/upgrade compared to the Xbox UHD player. I highly recommend those who can, to purchase a dedicated UHD player. I chose the Panasonic UB820 because it's regarded as one of the best players out there, and because it auto switches to Dolby Vision display.
i have a 4k tv without hdr and an xbox series x. its from the united kingdom but i live in the states so i bought a new power adapter. it wont play ntsc dvds but it said blu ray and 4k uhd are region free. i bought a 4k uhd disc and when i play it it looks very dark and not high resolution, when i bring up 'info' it says its running at 2k something res... am i doing anything wrong?
great video compare. to bad for the youtube compression. HDTVTest did an HDR test and the xbox only get 11,11,11 and not 0,0,0 for black levels. Hopefully it is patched some and you could make a new compare. thanks again
In the Xbox setting did you have it to output expanded color depth? I know there are several output config settings. Wonder if adjusting any of those might change the output we are seeing.
Late to this but... I have two PS3s I use exclusively as blu-ray players. The reason is that I originally had a dedicated player, but disk protection schemes continued to be updated but the player's firmware didn't, so I ran into disks it couldn't play. The Sony's advantage was/is continuing updates. I don't know the situation with UHD disks, but will be more sanguine about a game machines support. My only question would regard Cinavia. The X have it? It seems likely, but since it's more of a PC base maybe not?
Wasn't there an issue with the series X black level not being 0-0-0 (something like 16-16-16) where as previous gen (OneX) had a darker black level where true black was 0-0-0.
Are the features that are missing on the Xbox software related? The Xbox needs the bluray app to play blurays and it feels like it's pretty lacking and seems mostly unchanged since 2015
It might be a good option for some, however mine refuses to play any 4K UHD Blu-ray movies. It shows blank black screen with audio playing in the background. Regular 1080p HD Blu-ray’s work fine. I’ve read multiple forum posts describing the same problem. Bought my XBOX about two years ago, and only recently upgraded to 4K with Hisense U8K TV, so I haven’t tested 4K until now, and by now it’s out of warranty. XBOX shows green check marks for all available audio/video settings including 4K 120, I am using proper HDMI 2.1 cable on eARC, no other devices are connected, and I did troubleshoot various things, including power cycling, updating system+apps, resetting the console, and clearing persistent storage. Nothing worked for me. I’m debating, if I should get a proper dedicated player such as Panasonic DP-UB820-K or PS5.
Anyone have problems with stuttering video when playing blu-ray or 4K disc movies? And yes, I’ve tried ejecting the disc, restarting the console and putting the disc in again. Multiple times. It doesn’t work.
Seems like there is a miniscule improvement with a standalone player. The type of thing no human being would notice (or care about) unless they review them for a living.
There’s an entire sector of the headphone market targeted exclusively at people wanting the best sound quality. They buy so much stuff for what to us seems a minuscule improvement. So I’d reckon the same is true for video quality. Still if this is your reaction to this video, then it wasn’t made for you.
@@femboyfoxfurry2603 I'm actually a headphone collector, haha. So I'm very well aware. My whole point is that most people don't care and shouldn't bother. I might, they probably won't.
@@rsolsjo ah sorry. I just assumed you didn’t realize based off the other comments in this comment section. They act as if this channel isn’t for enthusiasts lol
THANK YOU for your Opinion. You cleared up some things for Me. I just bought the LG OLED CX, so I don't think I need a Dedicated Bluray at this time. I will save my money and enjoy. Thanks again.
How would it compare to a premium Blu Ray player £1500-£2K? I had a £250 player and a £1600 blu ray player and not surprisingly it beats it hands down in Video processing and audio dacs and I do think it's worth the premium in a home theatre setup.
Got both the UB820 and the Series X myself. As a movie entusiast, and collector of 4k discs, the Xbox simply lack too many features and settings to be a fully dedicated player, IMO. Love the Xbox though, but I really bought it exclusively for gaming. The Panasonic player is waay to slow to navigate though, but that picture and sound quality more than makes up for it for me, when used with a calibrated Panasonic OLED. I do think the vast majority however, even a lot of movie enthusiasts will be satisfied with the Xbox as their only player. It really is a great piece of tech.
Players really affect the sound.??? I have a q950a 1800 dolllar samsung surround sound soundbar system. I heard that they dont. Can you really hear better sound on stand alone 4k player vs the series x???
I bought my first 4k, one of the Warner brothers 100 years set, put them in and there seemed a noticeable fuzziness to the picture, both 4k and the blu rays. Ordered a Panasonic dp ub400 for 97 (it was 300) to test whether it's the discs or the xbox.
Quick question. I'm thinking about buying The Lord the Rings Trylogy all in 4K Blu Ray. Will my Xbox Series X play this without any issues? Is it like plug and play?
Matbe a bit late but yeah its plug and play. Atmos is great and picture is sharp. Still wonder if I can notice the difference between en xsx and the Panasonic 820 player.. maybe when its on discount ill try. Most reviews are not checking the sound quality difference via HDMI. Hopefully someone can tell the difference in Atmos performance?
Great video I'm still rocking with my oppo 203 sent the Panasonic back to store it wouldn't play MKV with atomos and m2ts files and BDMV files and mkv 3D files got huge hardrives hook into the oppo don't have to get up and put in a disk.
Why didn't you show if you used the same TV-settings and same HDMI input? Makes me think that both devices are connected at the same time in different inputs with different settings each... I'm pointing this because I seen enough reviews to know that you can have deferent settings for deferent inputs.
I think the different background color lighting adds to the effect of a brighter/more contrasty image depending on the color and so to do a more fair comparison you have to use the same background color lighting
The different background colors are to help viewers tell the difference and to help me with editing. I can assure you they didn’t have any effect on the actual picture
@@tHAvIlLaMaN I understand why you did it, but writing at the bottom of the video which image is from the blu-ray player and which is from the series x would be enough. Otherwise very good comparison :)
I have a Panasonic Ub9000 and against my other players and consoles the biggest difference is ability to tweak settings and watching poor quality disc. It does an outstanding job improving videos that weren't great transfers.
I love the Xbox SX don’t get me wrong BUT!! They definitely need to update the Blu-ray app because often the image will turn black and you can only hear the audio specially when playing 4K movies (who else has this problem)?
honestly, all your findings make me wonder. did you do the tv calibration steps in the xbox series x? it might be resolved if your calibration profile is different between the player and the console
I don't get why video on players isn't bitstreamed instead of pre-modified. I know audio can be bitstreamed in some cases and decoded by the TV/receiver. I think it's stupid that I need a Dolby Vision blu-ray player instead of my TV just detecting and decoding.
My Xbox One S has a very loud 4K player. It's actually so loud that it's distracting. I'm not sure if it's the disk spinning or the fan, but would love to know if the XSX suffers from the same issue.
My Xbox Series X is currently making a loud humming noise when watching 4K Blu Ray Disc movies. I looked it up in “Reddit” a lot of them say that Xbox Series X lacks on the 4K Blu Ray side. Also it has a terrible audio delay. I’m watching “Bumble Bee Movie” and the audio delay is really bad.
I have the Panasonic UB-820 and it does wonders for hdr on a projector compared to an Xbox which I used primarily as my 4k player prior to getting the dedicated player. The movie Solo particularly, which is very dark and almost unwatchable on a projector, the UB-820 hdr settings was awesome and made it fun to watch in my theater. But on a tv the Xbox does a great job and most people couldn’t tell the difference. By the way thank you for your post on Xbox launch day cause I was able to get one at Best Buy after your heads up! Another great video!!!
@@natehgh that’s strange. GM works perfect for me. I did have to replace my copy of Blade Runner though, as one spot in the movie would freeze up my 820. No issues at all with the replacement disc. 🤷♂️
I really want to justify a dedicated blu-ray player for Dolby Vision but after watching this comparison, I don’t know if I can. Maybe the difference is more apparent in person?
Since the Xbox Series X got lots of updates and fixed the black levels. Would you be willing to do an updated review? Soon the 4k player will support Dolby Vision. This will be a new device for lots this year and the Xbox is way different now.
Yeah, I mean even just adjusting the gamma can make a big difference. Most people have it at 0, but -2 looks the best tbh, and sometimes -1. But just adjusting it by 1 can alter the perceived contrast and colour saturation.
There is no difference at all. I would be more concerned about quality of the surround sound and atmos from xbox series x. Is everything working smoothly?
