A quick revisit to quite (5 years old~ish) new ISO6425 diver specified Frogman series watch by G-Shock. Fulfilling the a void in the market for an actually long lasting (30years++) in built (quality aspect) diver type wrist watch. In this case, a USED watch. Keep that in mind.
Reff GWFD1000 will come equipped with triple sensor to aids underwater navigation or simply as a timer; while working under the harsh ocean environment..or not.

I am a diver and use this watch to log my dives...I love it and it has replaced my old dive computer...it gives me all the data I need

Jeff Mutter I can see how you’ll use it to log your dives but you honestly don’t use a computer and use tables on every dive? This is a back up at best, what do you use as a backup?
@craigwthomson
@craigwthomson 4 года назад
For a moment there I thought Casio had developed a G-Shock dive computer. That would be cool! The key attribute that distinguishes a dive computer from a dive timer is a decompression algorithm which provides real time information on your no decompression time remaining at a given depth. A dive timer or watch used in combination with depth gauge and decompression tables is old skool and severely limits your bottom time because it assumes a ‘square profile’ when calculating your decompression obligation ie. that the duration of the dive was spent at maximum depth. You can calculate decompression requirements based on a multi-level diving model, but this only adds further complexity and scope for error. I collect dive watches and I take them on dives now and then, but they’re a novelty really, or back-up at best. I’d say it’s almost the opposite of what you’re suggesting in the video. A beginner is better to have a basic dive computer of their own, rather than a timer. If you were to buy something like this to complete your open water training, you’d soon have to buy a dive computer anyway. A computer helps the diver to be self-sufficient, which is crucial in the event of buddy separation, it reduces scope for error and It’s a safer, more enjoyable way to dive, allowing you to maximise your dive time. This is especially true if you’re doing multiple dives (e.g. on vacation) where your computer is able to track your residual nitrogen load over several days. If there are any new divers reading, then I’d recommend a dive computer that has Nitrox capability. You won’t need this feature right away, but it’ll cover any situation you’re likely to encounter in recreational diving and will make sure you get the most from your dives. Dive safe! Wile E. Coyote If you exceed the no decompression limit (NDL), you can no longer ascend directly to the surface without doing a series of decompression stops at staged intervals to allow the nitrogen in your body tissues to dissipate. Incidentally, you’ll find the NDLs printed on the bands of some Citizen dive watches if you’ve ever wondered what those numbers mean. If you accidentally exceed the NDL, a dive computer will guide you through your stops on your ascent, letting you know the depths at which you must stop and for how long. The alternative is that you use a timer and a set of dive tables to calculate and plan your stops. You can imagine the advantage of having a computer in this scenario. With the exception of a ‘safety stop’ (e.g. 3mins @ 5m), most recreational divers prefer to avoid decompression dives and stick within the NDL. Technical divers, recreational, commercial or military will meticulously plan decompression dives in advance in order to ensure adequate breathing gas for the extended duration of their dives. To add further complication, they may also carry more than one breathing gas, sometimes in a ‘pony’ or side-slung cylinder and switch to this during decompression to ‘accelerate’ their decompression time by breathing a mix with less nitrogen and more oxygen to reducing their ongoing nitrogen load and help the nitrogen dissipate from their body tissues. You may have heard of ‘rebreathers’ essentially the rebreather automatically manages the diver’s breathing mix throughout the dive for maximum efficiency. Really beyond the scope of your original question, but the use of rebreathers among recreational divers highlights a trend toward the use of technology and increasing automation. Thanks for asking. Given the popularity of dive watches, it’s useful to put some of this information out there in the watch community.

Are there other dive watch brands besides Citizen that print the NDL numbers onto their watch bands? Are there companies that make the bands alone? Thanks for sharing.

@@franka7691Only Citizen does that, and I think that's why it's a very popular dive watch among actual professional divers. They use it for its functionality, not for its looks.

It doesn't make it a dive computer. A dive computer will take variables like your depth, time at depths, gas tank mixture, ascent/descent rates etc and then do the maths for you and calculate how long you can stay underwater at different depths and give you real time information during the dive. A Frogman is an awesome back up for the functions it has but it isn't a dive computer.

@jeffmutter2286 4 года назад
Matt I hear you but for most Rec divers they would not need to buy an expensive dive computer...this watch gives your general Rec diver all the data they need to log their dive proper...80% of divers are rec and aren’t mixing gases and pressure group is a function of a divers max depth and dive time...not time at different depths
@MattSteemson

@@jeffmutter2286 If you're going to be using tables and calculating your dive profile it's fine to use any timing device, even a $40 regular G-Shock. We stopped using tables in the industry a while back and it's not particularly even taught to new divers anymore. Haven't had a single person dive with tables in the 10 years I've worked in the industry. Cheap computers can be had nowadays for $200-$300US. My original point however was that the Frogman is not a dive computer, not wether diving without a computer is possible.

Yeah a real dive computer includes a human tissue model in it to compute how much nitrogen your body is absorbing, and rate of outgassing it does in between dives, so you don't have to use the go through the dive table manually based on your dive time only. And when you use the manual dive tables you have to default to the least common denominator which assumes you were at max depth the whole time... so using the dive tables safely means getting a lot less time underwater before you have to come up, after your first dive that day. Plus computers will compute your absorption and out-gassing when you're on the plane flying to your destination so you'll know very well when you are ready to dive once you get to your location, and for how long (flying at altitude in an airplane has the same affect on your body tissues as coming up from a previous dive at depth). So you can go through all the manual table with your g-shock timer and depth log functions, or you can wear a computer on your wrist everywhere you go and it will tell you when you can dive and for how long, and how deep, as you dive. The computer is easier... but if it breaks, to be safe you have to stop diving for at least 24 hours so that you know on the next dive you're starting the dive tables that you'll have to start using, fresh and safe. Everything I'm talking about is for recreational sport divers on regular air tanks... not mixed gas diving. 100% of sport divers should at least be using dive tables and pressure groups, or a dive computer so they don't have to assume max depth, and get a lot more bottom time during their dive vacation. Me, I'm both a sport and commercial diver. When I fun-dive, I use the watch and manual tables.... I don't like trusting my life to a device that might break and cause me to lose a whole day of diving on vacation. Plus I love lounging on the boat in-between dives eating cantaloupe in the saltwater air... gives it a great taste. So I always have enough surface interval that it doesn't affect my dive time. The only time I wish I was using a computer is in during multi-level dives that have a lot of difference between depths. If there's not a lot of difference and I've gone really deep for a while, I'll run out of air before hitting my max bottom time allowable. Bottom line: the Frogman is NOT a computer. In the video definition he missed the key last phrase: "based on your previous dives that day" -- this is where the human tissue model, gas absorption, and out-gassing come in... none of which are in the G-shock. I own two Frogmen: One that I actually use for diving (the Antarctic collaboration) and another that I wear for fashion and treat very gingerly that I LOVE (the Coast Guard collaboration in yum-yum green).

Matt Steemson Totally agree with you that this isn’t a dive computer. It would make a useful depth timer but the Scubapro/Uwetec timer is only £100 and is very easy to use and great as a back up. I don’t see why anyone would not dive with a computer these days as there are cheap, reliable ones on the market. I generally dive with a computer (Shearwater Teric) and a depth timer as a backup (Scubapro) and I take tables as a back up on a tec/deco dive, specifically for that dive. I’m really not sure where this watch would fit in my diving.

Kid, none of the 3 reasons you said at the beginning characterize a dive computer. Also a “professional” diver doesn’t have all the data “in his head” as you’ve mentioned. Dive computers exist to simplify and replace the calculations & relationship between bottom time, depth an nitrogen tissue saturation (that’s the simple explanation, we can also mention no decompression times, nervous system toxicity, gas mixture, ascent rate, tank pressure, etc). Otherwise, you need to preplan your diving profile using the US Dive tables. I would advise that you avoid giving diving recommendations if you aren’t familiar in DEPTH (pun intended) with the topic. I agree this is in no way a dive computer or a substitute for one. As a Public safety diver I can assure that while this is cool and I do own one myself and take it on dives this is not a backup to a computer. I see a lot of people reviewing the frogman saying the same thing. Which is quite dangerous if someone were to use this watch over a dive computer.

Haaaaaa.....! Never ever dive without a buddy and a dive chart and computer! A propper dive watch is for time up and time down at depth only! Everything else is a gift and must be used with extreem caution! For safty reasons having a dive computer, or dive chart is a must; as this will be your master log keeper and saturation data recorder. Having a professional dive watch capable of logging your dives and surface times are primarily used only as a backup... I have well over 7,000 hours diving in the Atlantic and Gulf, and we as a dive team know what were talking about. A watch will always be secondary when Scuba Diving, but it is only part of your kit. So respect its abilities and capabilities, but know that it will serve you if the user doesent push it... Know your instruments well and know their limits. As a reminder, in all my years diving, I have never personally seen a scuba diver diving, while solely using a dive watch of any caliber. Can it be done? Yes. Although, there remains better technology out there, designed to make the experience a whole lot safer and more enjoyable, coupled with a dam good dive watch! A good dive watch will always be a major part of your dive kit; so choose wisely mates! Be safe out there everyone and we will see you on a beach somewhere on earth! Yeeeeeeeeeehaaaaaaa!!!!

You should have referred to a certified diver prior making this video rather than just simply referring to an online web store to find out what you think a real dive computer does. A proper dive computer does not only record our dive time, diving depth, indicating surface interval duration, and displaying ascending and descending rates; ESSENTIALLY a dive computer is also capable to calculate NDL (non-decompression limits), and this is what Casio lacks in their Frogman and Gulfmaster “advanced dive watches”. I’m a Scuba diver myself, and I’m rocking with a GWNQ1000 Gulfmaster as a redundancy bottom timer together with my Shearwater Perdix AI whenever I go Scuba diving. Allow me to highlight it again, I will only see these watches as a bottom timer, period. So, if you would as me: Could you dive with these watches (Frogman & Gulfmaster)? Yes, but only for those diving that has no nitrogen absorption is involve, i.e. free diving. Could you use it solely for scuba diving? Hell NO!

Amount of time at depth forces nitrogen into the diver's system. Dive computers have algorithms that calculate how long you can stay at a depth safely without, hopefully, getting decompression sickness aka the bends. A computer will also give you decompression stops as you ascend to release nitrogen which, hopefully, keeps you from getting bent. A dive computer can also be programmed to calculate all of the above depending on the mix of oxygen in your tank. I am a pro diver and wear G-Shocks underwater. They are not dive computers and it is dangerous to represent them as such.

You have no idea what you are talking about. This watch is NOT a dive computer in any form. At best, it’s a depth timer and there are better one’s on the market such as the Scubapro/Uwetec depth timer at about £100. A dive computer will constantly take in your depth and time and work out your no decompression limits and then work out any decompression obligation during your ascent. It’s based on several different tissue models and also based on your breathing gas - some will even work out your gas consumption.
