Is This is Easy Way to Install a RV Roof A/C?

In a number of videos, I have shown my old school method of installing a RV roof A/C without a forklift or scissor lift or help. I heard the comments and concerns and recently purchased what promises to be a safer and easy way of lifting these heavy units onto the roof of RVs. So when I needed to replace two roof A/C's on this 2005 Beaver Monterey, I thought this would be the perfect time to try it out.
WARNING!! The "Pick Me Up" hoist does say not to use with a telescoping ladder, but my tall enough laddder would have taken 40 minutes to setup and take down because it's so heavy. Overall I think it is a great product especially with the right ladder. The battery mount needs to be secured better but it did its job and I would recommend it.
This is not a sponsored video but here is the link to the product if you are interested:

Thanks for watching!!!
I'm sure we will see this RV again soon!!

When I installed my dometic 12500 BTU system in my winnebago voyage I used a ladder with a strong rope and tied it off like you did and used the ladder like slide rails and pulled it up to the roof , worked great. Big fan James.....

Treat your back with kindness. On my job, I used to move heavy equipment, and now at 63, I’m paying for it with lower back pains.

That is a pretty slick idea. Recovering from microdiscectomy as I watch this, I’d say well worth the price. The way it overhangs I’d think might put a flex load on the ladder that an extension ladder might handle better than a telescopic ladder for heavier ac’s.

Pretty slick! My badlands winch, mounted to a receiver hitch extension, has been the champ for many … sketchy things. Pulling the paddle boat up over the bank at camp, lifting the metalbestos chimney up 30’ and, loading/moving a furnace and oil tank. Definitely the MVP! I like the inclusion of a ladder and will likely add that to my next questionable endeavor!

I'd save the shroud from the old A/C unit. They are not cheap to replace when they get blown off by a storm or going down the road, or cracked by hail, old age. Expensive plastic! Glad you got a ladder wench/hoist for the job. Safety first, always.

For the sake of your health and your family's income, this looks like a good solution. Not perfect. Maybe not even great. But much, much better than what you were doing before. For a little perspective, we have a family friend that was a civil engineer. He fell off his ladder putting up lights, struck his head, spent weeks in the hospital and in therapy and has never really recovered mentally. I get nervous enough seeing you on the roof without any fall protection, especially when you are doing your inspections. So I am glad that you found this tool.

...aaah... James... that was stressful to watch! I like the concept of this hoist... but still stressful considering the guiding efforts required on and off of the roof. Carrying it up is also stressful to watch... It seems challenging to reposition the ladder out far enough to have the ac clear the coach when lowering. Jury is out my friend... but definitely worth saving your back! ~Big C in the DP 📢 ::: Air Horn 📢 ::: ::: Air Breaks! ::: 🚌🚌🚌

That lift is in genius. The winch is from Harbor freight, but who cares when I replaced my penguin I had to rent a genie lift commonly I sometimes wish I had made a video of it. It worked out very well as we pumped up the lift with the air conditioner on it, and then pushed it forward to the coach, where we retrieved it as simple as a forklift, but the rental of the Jeanne was not cheap. Congratulations AZ the expert that was awesome. I want to find out where to buy one of those. Thomyt

With solar batteries and units getting heavier. I seeing the engine lift being used to unbox, and lifting units up onto the wall there on wheels, and you can pull the lift over the top of the battery with the wheel on each side to center it under the boom and lift a way. Thanks again for your leader lift. 😊

I backed my truck up to my Class A, and put an extension ladder in the bed. It was at a lower angle. The end of the ladder was against the opposite end from the tailgate, so it couldn’t move. I then set the A/C, still in the box, on the ladder, and started pushing it up the incline. I laid down on the ladder, and belly crawled up to the top. Wasn’t too difficult. The old A/C was hurled off the roof onto the grass. Not a method I’d recommend for a professional, but works well for the shade tree mechanics.

@@AZExpert thank you, the link on the Houghtons was for a non ducted unit, but I watched your video and that was a ducted unit so I’ll look for that one. Will all these units swap out relatively easy with the original units on my Rv, like one size fits all on these ducted setups, or is there something to watch out for. My first Rv a/c swap but I’m a mechanic by trade and it looks pretty straight forward. Thx again for your great content, it’s super well done and very helpful. If I was closer we would be drinking beer together lol. Cheers
@AZExpert
@AZExpert 2 месяца назад
If you have a ducted system getting a ducted air box will be best, the opening is 14 x 14 and pretty much universal with a small exception for airstreams and some newmars. Im also guessing as you have a 1999, its likely time to upgrade your tstat, controller and ceiling box, so the houghton does not require all of those and is slick but you could still use a new dometic and likely the controller and tstat will still work
