Is this really Fly Fishing?

Fly fishing is different things to different people and it is not for anyone to tell you you're doing it wrong. Certainly not some RU-vid w***er like me, no I am not here to judge. Defining what fly fishing is I will leave to men much wiser than I! What I will do in this video is show you a solid method for catching fish that anyone can do. If I wanted to get someone into fishing you better believe I would be hot footing it over to Farmoor! Catching fish is what keeps people especially youngsters coming back for more. I believe we are all duty bound to encourage people into the sport of fly fishing less we see it disappear all together.

My dad may he rest in peace taught me the trolling style of fishing, we used to do long drifts up the middle of Grafham water on lead-core lines. Can be very effective but nothing beats fishing Nymphs and Buzzers out the front of the boat, when you find the fish. Great video bought back some good memories thanks guys.

I guess a purist who can afford an expensive beat on a prime wild trout chalk stream would say it’s not fly fishing. But for the rest of us, we’d be more than happy to call it that for the day that you two have just enjoyed.

I can't believe this...i actually was on that day on the lake with you guys...just starting fly fishing...and i had a chat with you at the end when we where docking the boats regarding the session as my one was not that good(as imagine) because i was using a intermediate line and not sinking one. Really a genuine guy and friendly, straight away told me what i have to do to catch more fish in this weather. I followed his tips and i am back there this weekend so fingers cross i get more fish...😅. Really loved the video also 👍👍

Thanks Lindsay, for your informative and enthusiastic videos. I only fish floating lines, very occasionally with an intermediate tip and on the river I'm not into Euro nymphing or French leader. I'll be out in a boat a bit later in the year, when there is hopefully some action higher in the water. I just enjoy going through the motions of casting a line. I accept that I'm not a serious angler but also that if you have been in the cold all day, it's nice to have some success. I suppose it's fly fishing if the person who does it believes that it is and is not breaking any rules. Thanks again to yourself and your long suffering boat partner.

Great stuff Lindsay, I'm a regular bank angler to Farmoor in the Spring and Summer months and the sport can be superb when you get it right. I'd have to disagree with you on the 'is it fly fishing' debate though. Sure, it's not as rewarding as matching the hatch and drifting a nymph with the current, but there is still some skill involved and your fly is still imitating some form of food source for the fish to feed on, regardless of which way you cast on the drift. I think it's a similar debate to the bung tbh; both methods are deadly and less traditional, but both are still fly fishing (in my humble opinion!).
@lindsayiflyfish

Hi Ben, yes Farmoor can produce amazing sport from the bank and when it warms up I will be up to do a video on the buzzer fishing. That's the thing about fly fishers there is always a good debate to be had!.....lol.

I think that what is fly fishing has been forgotten or for some anglers never been known , it seems to me that how many fish caught or size is the motive now and any method will do I. Whont say I haven’t tried some of the methods but they never sat right with me, I love to fish small and have done well, but I won’t call people who fish these methods if they enjoy that good luck to them and I hope they have good days. Agree with your first point. We have had a culture creeping in that you must catch as many fish as possible whatever. This has emerged in part from competition fishing and the whole paid put and take stockie scene. I don't subscribe to the rationalisation that came from this, that somehow anything goes. Attitudes plainly do matter, in life and in fly fishing. It would be really healthy if people accepted blank days, there is nothing wrong in that at all but I know we now have a world that is somehow frenetic and entitled (you must have everything you want all the time). For me fly fishing is an aesthetic pursuit, it's self evident we set self limiting rules about it, that's the whole point. Part of being a fly fisherman is showing respect for the traditions, nature and the quarry. This doesn't have to be mean snobbishness and entail expensive access to chalk streams. I fish for wild fish for next to hothing in cost. Being 'purist' is sometimes made out to be wrong though it's not a bad thing, rather it can be a good thing. I'm proud to want a pure approach - pure waters, pure nature, pure attitudes - respecting what and how we do things.

Hi Coach, I have been fly fishing around 35 years and the changes have been massive. The term elite never sits well with me and with (let's be honest here) fly fishing on the decline in the UK. Not all change is good but it is inevitable, If we don't evolve from the tweed and upstream dry fly attitude I doubt many youngsters will be beating a path to the tackle shop to buy fly fishing gear. Its incumbent on us all to encourage inclusion in our sport whether fishing for Pike, Perch, Chub and all the other species that can be targeted on the fly.

I think that the chuck n leave it boobie say from a dam wall while they carry on fishing a separate rod. Resulting in a deep hooked fish with zero chance of survival.
